Interview

Getting Higher With Wayne From Soldiers Of Scrape

Detroit, Michigan may be well known for churning out new automobiles off the assembly line but there is one mean steel machine running around called SOLDIERS OF SCRAPE that is making more noise out of the underground music scene than a Ford Pinto that should've been junked twenty years ago. Soldiers Of Scrape just took top honors for 2006's Monster Picks contest, a true testimony to just how popular this band is. They are to be featured in the upcoming Decibel magazine. This is a metal band that is for the people and of the people, like one of its main inspirations, Pantera. They are going to be turning the touring knob up to eleven here in September and October, so watchout for them throughout Michigan and Illinois. I took some time to get my Q&A on with their always bleary eyed bassist, Wayne. More...

Candiria Drummer Comments On Departure

In case there was any doubt, drummer Kenneth Schalk has confirmed his departure from Candiria earlier this year. Speaking with fans on the forum of Candiria's website, Schalk chronicled the past year and a half of his life with the following:

"I didn't leave the band for God if that's what you think. I left the band because my personal life was suffering in many ways because of my commitment to the band.

February 2005: My feelings for leaving the band started here when Eric left. At that point a piece of our foundation had been taken away. Can a building be its strongest with an incomplete foundation?

March 2005 - October 2005: Many things like a ridiculously mind and heart draining lawsuit and trial, along with not touring or even writing music put me in a state where I didn't even consider us a band.

June - October 2005: Before we went to England, we experienced a rollercoaster of tour potential bullshit that made me think how horrible our manager and record label were and my views of our business became tainted. At this point I really wanted to end the band or leave. With the 2 weeks in england which finally happened afterall, we had a chance to revive our energy but it didn't work for me.

Nov 2005: After that tour, we had to drop one of the guitarists we were working with and try again to come up with another plan to keep this band alive.

Dec 2005: So we figured let's write a record. Carley recruits John to help Carley write.

Jan 2006: We put together John and Carley's music into an album. In the process, my girlfriend (and someday my wife) tells me she can't live this way anymore and I have to decide what I feel is right.

February 2006: Candiria - pretty much burnt out in my opinion and probably will not be too active much longer in my life. My girlfriend - someone I want to be with the rest of my life. So I made the obvious choice and gave up Candiria to salvage a relationship that is priceless to me. I can always keep making music but when you love someone unconditionally, you can't let that get away.

March 2006: I'm in California and my mind is swirling with so many personal toughts that I'm the most stressed and tense I've ever felt in my life. I reach a state of personal confusion.

May 2006: Waiting for my girlfriend's car to get fixed, I look up to the sky and call out to God and start the road to healing.

August 2006: Staying focused with God, evolving again as a human and embracing the experience I am a part of. I truly am back on a path in life. Putting my spiritual health first again takes out my decisions of selfishness like greed or desire or lust. Naturally I'm not perfect so I expect to keep making mistakes until I can either fully cleanse myself or die as best a human as I could be on this earth-inside and outside."

"We've toured a lot, we've become an amazing band, we've become really tight [and] we're a completely different beast than we were."

With regards to the musical direction of the upcoming CD, guitarist Peter Persson recently said, "We deliberately strived to make 'Transcend into Ferocity' [2004] a bit more 'unpolished' to make it feel more aggressive and more ferocious [than 2002's 'Remnants of Deprivation']. With the new album we have a different kind of vibe we want to express and therefore the sound will be accordingly. More...

King Diamond Voices Character On 'Metalocalypse'

KING DIAMOND is the latest metal musician to lend his voice to the cartoon series "Death Clock Metalocalypse". King Diamond recorded his part on Monday, August 21 and reportedly "kicked ass." Other musicians who have contributed to the series include Michael Amott (ARCH ENEMY), Warrel Dane (NEVERMORE), Steve Smyth (NEVERMORE), Jeff Loomis (NEVERMORE), Kirk Hammett (METALLICA) and James Hetfield (METALLICA). Check out images of Hetfield's and Hammett's appearance in the series, which premiered August 6 on Adult Swim (the adult-oriented television programming block on Cartoon Network), at Metallica.com.

"Dethklok Metalocalypse" follows the mayhem surrounding the world's biggest band, and 12th-largest economy, the half-Norwegian/half-American black metal band DETHKLOK, according to ThePhoenix.com. They live in a gigantic upside-down dragon boat perched atop the fjords of Norway. They cause disaster, destruction, and bloodshed wherever they go. In an age where metal is king, DETHKLOK's business savvy trumps the world's most shrewd visionaries. But they're excessively dumb when it comes to the most rudimentary tasks. For example, they don't know how to make food for themselves — not even a sandwich. During one scene, guitarist Skwisgarr Skwigelf tries to make coffee with a toaster. Although they've outsold THE BEATLES, DETHKLOK are, according to show co-creator Brendon Small, "just a thousand times more dangerous and a billion times more stupid." More...

SKEW SISKIN is currently recording a new CD at its Berlin studio for a tentative early 2007 release. "As it looks, we're recording around 16 songs, but only 10 to 12 will make it on the CD," the band previously stated. "Not that we are too lazy no, we have tons of spectacular guitar riffs and song ideas lying around. But sometimes less is more, and we want to present the best of the best on this upcoming album."

SKEW SISKIN, whose current lineup included PRIMAL FEAR drummer Randy Black, last year announced that they were canceling all their shows so that frontwoman Nina C. Alice could receive medical treatment for an infection.

Guitarist Stephan Forté has completed the songwriting sessions for ADAGIO's fourth album, entitled "Archangels in Black". The album will feature nine songs plus a bonus track for Japan. Aborted Forced To Drop Off Cryptopsy Tour

Belgian death metallers ABORTED have issued the following update:

Well, this tour [with CRYPTOPSY] has been quite the debacle. We had to cancel Malmo [Sweden] since the bus broke down in Denmark and we were stuck there the whole day which sucked ass. Luckily for the fans, CRYPTOPSY did make it at the last minute, and apparently they tore it up! We apologize to the fans there waiting to see us, but we only found out last minute we wouldn't make it, sucks.... Secondly, Matty [guitar] had some problems with his working situation so last minute we had to cancel our participation to the rest of the tour since he might have lost his job over this. Our boys in VISCERAL BLEEDING are taking over for the other dates and I'm sure they will do the killing in our stead. All you guys out there, no worries, we're planning a full offensive next year with the new album! Now it's time to play Stockholm, see you guys there!" More...

The Berzerker Mainman Comments On New Album, Tour

The Berzerker are currently working on their 4th studio album for Earache. The as-yet-untitled album will deliver even more brutality from the mad Aussies. With 10 tracks currently in demo form the band is waiting with baited breath to take this material into the studio and record yet another earth
shattering album of Industrial Grindcore.

Working on the new album this time as always is mainman and vocalist Luke Kenny with Jason V (Self titled, World of Lies). Together the 2 have been working for the past few weeks to out do all their previous releases and are well on track to destroy some more brain cells with their sonic attack.

"The new material is in fucking insane" says Kenny. " I sometimes wonder when we start writing if we really can out-do our other releases, I mean we have already made some of the fastest most brutal music on the planet and when people hear the name The Berzerker, they fucking know it!."

"Even to this day, every time we've finished a writing session I listen back. And i'm stopped in my tracks by the sheer ferocity for the music... No one else assaults the listeners with such a barrage of force as we do... This time is war!"

Kenny continues: "I'm bringing back some old school vocal styles and fucking loving it. Its a crazy time for me at the moment working on all the new material and planning another 2 weeks of touring in the UK."

"We had to come back.. The last UK tour was so well attended and was so fucking violent. We gave the crowd all the energy we had (and them some) and they took it and fucking threw it back at us... As well as breaking their bodies in the process... I know they want more... And so do we... Get
ready.. Make your doctors appointments early.. Cause we coming back in December to make you bleed once more... We don't so much play music as pump out hateful Waves of blasting energy from the stage... If your brave enough we'll see you there... RROOAAGGGHHHH!!!"

Earache expects to release the new album before the end of the year or early new year- meantime, fans can check out THE BERZERKER myspace page for updates and tour details.

Mournful Congregation Record New Track

Mournful Congregation is currently in the process of recording a new track for a split 7" record with fellow Australian doom metal band Stone Wings. This track will be entitled 'Descent Of The Flames', with the Stone Wings track being entitled 'Ascent Of The Flames'.

This is somewhat of a concept 7" with both sets of lyrics being penned by Chuck Keller (Order From Chaos, Vulpecula, Ares Kingdom). With corresponding artwork and musical parallels, this will truly be a unique and one-of-a-kind jewel in the doom metal annals.

It is unsure as to which label it will be released through at this stage, but expect its release late in 2006.

Damon from Mournful Congregation has recently lent his doomed vocals to a Fallen hymn. Of course this is the funeral doom band driven by Funeral drummer Anders Eek. The track is inextricably extreme and the results of this collaboration have proven to be truly doomed. What's more is that the lyrics to this hymn were penned by the late Einar Fredriksen of Funeral, making this a very meaningful track indeed. More news as to how it shall be released is soon to come.

There is also talk of a four-way split 12" LP in the works with three other extreme doom metal bands from across the globe including Loss. The artwork for this release will be handled by Away of Voivod. These collaborations will serve as the perfect predescessor to Mournful Congregation's next album which is set for a 2007 release.
