Ozzfest 2006 Comes To Bristow, Virginia

Another year, another Ozzfest. After a star-studded lineup for its ten year anniversary last year, Ozzfest was faced with the challenge of putting together yet another great lineup for its eleventh year. When I went to Bristow, VA on Sunday, August 6, 2006, I was wondering just how good a lineup they managed to scrape together. I knew the bands that were playing, but the real question remained whether the main stage bands could hold their own with primarily younger, nu-metal bands on it and Ozzy closing out the second stage.

The temperatures had fortunately dropped from the 105F degree humid days of only a few days earlier, but the sky was crystal clear for most of the day and the intense sun beating down on you in the 90F degree temperatures was still enough to take a lot out of you and require constant re-hydration. Emperor Announce More News And Shows

After triumphantly headlining the annual Wacken Open Air Festival and completing recent capacity performances in America, Emperor today announce two additional performances for 2006. Scheduled Saturday, October 7 Emperor will headline the fifth annual Motstoy Festival in the band's hometown of Notodden. Formed in 2002 by local youth and supportive arts organizations, this year's festival will also include appearances by Red Harvest, Mortiis, She Said Destroy and Pagan's Mind, among others.

”The Motstoy festival is a non-profit organization situated in Notodden that my company Mnemosyne Productions has endorsed since its start in 2002," says vocalist/guitarist Ihsahn. "As it is a no-alcohol arrangement with no age limit, it is a great opportunity for Emperor to play a local show and at the same time give younger fans a chance to see us live.” Ticket and sponsorship information can be found at the festival's official site located at www.motstoy.com.

Emperor additionally confirm their return to England for an exclusive engagement at the famed London Astoria. Scheduled Saturday, October 28 the show will feature supporting performances from Candlelight Recording artist To-Mera and Nocturnal Art Productions recording artist She Said Destroy.

"It’s great to finally come back to England with Emperor," says Samoth.
"England is where we first started out in the early 90’s; signing to Candlelight Records and heading out on our first real tour. We’ve always had a strong following in England, both press and fans, and we’ve built up a strong relationship throughout the years with the folks at Candlelight Records and Plastic Head, so it was a very obvious choice for us to return to the United Kingdom. All hail & see you soon!"

Emperor's final album, Prometheus: The Discipline of Fire & Demise, was released October 2001. In 2004, Candlelight Records reissued the band's four genre-defining albums, Wrath of the Tyrants, In the Nightside Eclipse, Anthems to the Welkin at Dusk and IX Equilibrium; each featuring bonus footage and material previously unavailable on both European and US-licensed versions. All recordings are available as part of Candlelight's vinyl collectors series on sale at exclusive retailers worldwide or by direct purchase from the label's official webstores (European customers visit www.plastichead.com; North American customers visit the recently launched www.candlelightrecordsusa.com). Additional merchandise from Emperor is also available.

The recently announced Emperor guitar tabulature book, Scattered Ashes: A Decade of Emperial Wrath will see worldwide release in time for the London performance. The 132-page oversized book featuring foreword and transcriptions by Ihsahn will include original tabs for thirteen Emperor classics contained on the band's 2003 compilation of the same name.

All Shall Perish Drummer Sounds Off

Oakland's Extreme Metal brood ALL SHALL PERISH, who's sophomore album The Price Of Existence is released today, have been on the road almost a full month with Suicide Silence, Too Pure To Die, Nights Like These and Light This City. Kicking things off in California and the Southwest, the tour has since hit the Heartland (where the band's van broke down in need of air conditioning repairs) up to Michigan and across Ohio, Pennsylvania and New York. Next was the Northeast and down the East Coast through Virginia, North Carolina and Georgia as the band invade Sector 7G tonight in Augusta and The Masquerade in Atlanta tomorrow night on August 9th. ALL SHALL PERISH have been through a lot already but they've got another 4 weeks out before seeing their homes and families. Drummer Matt Kuykendall lends some words about the gruesome and successful run of dates so far while also sharing the band's excitement about the new album...

"Tour has been insane, great shows every night...the kids have been going nuts. We had our van breakdown a few times, and a few kids got broke during breakdowns but the show must go on. New York gets the mosh award and Tulsa, Oklahoma gets the worst weather ever award. We saw our friends in suffocation and got to hear the new album....it rules, everyone watch out for that shit!!! Check the tour journal on our website for more details on the dirt! And go pick up our new album today! We couldn't be happier with it and I think we're gonna show people what this band is capable of, thanks for all the support!"

Disavowed Sign To Neurotic Recordings

Neurotic Records has issued the following update about the signing of Disavowed:

After brief negotiations Neurotic Records announce the addition of Dutch based outfit DISAVOWED to its ranks. After no less than five years Disavowed is ready to record the follow up to their, to this date highly acclaimed, 2001 debut "Perceptive Deception". The as of yet untitled album will be recorded in September, and a few song titles to appear, in no particular order are: 'Dogmatic Conceit', 'The Veils Of Misconception' and 'Biased Existence'.

Ruud Lemmen, founder and owner of Neurotic Records commented: "Disavowed have always been a favourite of me personally. I've seen at least a dozen of their shows from small back-alley cafes to established festivals. Disavowed simply never ceases to deliver with extreme precision and great enthusiasm. Forced with a new drummer Disavowed is armed and ready to reclaim what should have been theirs a long time ago."

Guitarist Gerben v.d. Bij added: "We are very happy to sign with Neurotic Records to release our 2nd CD. We’ve noticed that Neurotic Records puts a tremendous effort in bringing its bands to a higher level, through excellent promotion, tours and distribution. Over the past few years we’ve put a vast amount of dedication in the preparations for the recordings our new CD, which we think will contain the best Disavowed material so far. We feel that joining forces with Neurotic Record will result in maximal utilization of Disavowed's potential.”

The, as of yet untitled, sophomore Disavowed album is planned for a January, 2007 release.

The Red Chord Vocalist Speaks Out

Stylusmagazine.com recently interviewed vocalist Guy Kozowyk of THE RED CHORD, including things along the lines of 'Keeping it Wolf', and his vocal techniques. A few excerpts follow:

Stylusmagazine.com: Who are your vocal influences?

Kozowyk: My biggest influence is probably Frank Mullen from Suffocation. There's what I enjoy, and then there's what's actually influenced me. I grew up around a lot of hardcore shows, and I liked the barking, yelling hardcore vocals. There was so much volume involved; you had hardcore shows that were just hollering to the back of the room, basically. It didn't matter if [the singers] had a microphone or not, you could still hear them. But I like the inhuman quality to vocalists like Frank Mullen and all these other death/grind metal vocalists. When I [came up with] my vocal style, it was death metal vocals, but with volume. Have you ever listened to the band Mortician?

Stylusmagazine.com: Only a little.

Kozowyk: You know how they have, like… I guess any death metal band in general that has the "secret passage vocal"… Do you remember in the first Zelda [video game], when you move the rock, and it goes "Whoaaarrrggghhh," the cave vocal, like "You're unleashing the cave!" "Whoaaarrrggghhh!"

Stylusmagazine.com: OK, right.

Kozowyk: Basically, "secret passage vocal." There's no volume to it, there's no emphasis, there's no oomph. To me, that's not real. You can go into a studio and you can put your hand over a mic and, you can be like, "Urrrggghhh." You can do all these burps and shit, but that doesn't have any balls to it. When a vocalist gets on the mic and doesn't need mic tricks, and can scream [his] fucking head off—to me, that's extreme, that's power. That means a lot more to me than someone being able to do sick [vocal] inhales in the studio, where it sounds like some weird animal, but then you see them live, and if they don't have the mic turned all the way up, and if they don't have their hand over the mic, then [they] can't emulate it.

Stylusmagazine.com: You've become associated with the phrase "keeping it wolf." What does that mean?

Kozowyk: Our guitar player (Gunface) actually coined the phrase "keeping it wolf." We were at some show, seeing a bunch of little guys with clothes that were way too small. And Gunface said, "Look at these people. I refuse to be, like, this ugly hermaphrodite. I’m just going to keep it wolf. I don’t shave my chest, I don’t shave my back, I’m a hairy dude, I got a beard, I have long hair, I smell bad, and I don’t care." It’s not to say that you can’t shower or shave or brush your teeth, because [otherwise] that’s just disgusting. But be fuckin’ real, be a man. There’s been such an emphasis on looking like a broad. I think it’s gross, and it’s just a phase. What the fuck are these people doing, showing up to shows with girls’ jeans that are painted on? There’s been this big resurgence of glam, with guys painting their fingernails and putting eyeliner on. Wolves don’t worry about that shit, and neither should we.

Downlord Give Video Studio Report

DOWNLORD, the Denmark-based death metal band featuring Dave Ingram (ex-BENEDICTION, BOLT THROWER) on vocals, Donovan Spenceley (ex-SACRIFICIAL, EXCESSIVE PAYBACK) on guitar, Rene Falther (ex-EXCESSIVE PAYBACK, INIQUITY) on guitar, Thomas Fagerlind (ex-INIQUITY, DAEMON) on bass, and Rasmus Schmidt on drums, has released a studio-report video on the work progressing with the recording of its full-length album, "Random Dictionary Of The Damned", due late November 2006 on Open Grave Records.

Commented Dave Ingram: "In fact, the video has been available for a couple of weeks now. I just haven't had any bloody time to update the site, what with all the work we've been doing on the album! There's also the fact that we cracked open our archives and have set three older video reports online too. These being from the recording of our last demo, which we made in early 2006 with Reno Kiilerich on drums. And there's also some new pics available in the Photo Vault at www.downlord.dk.

"The album is coming along really fucking well! We're all pleased with the results so far, it's sounding killer. (But what ELSE would we say, right?) There's been a lot of hard work done, with plenty of blood, sweat and beers spilled along the way."

The album studio report video can be viewed at YouTube.com. The three archived videos featuring Reno can be viewed here. More...

"The Video for My Love, My Love (We've Come Back From The Dead) is almost ready. We got to see the first cut and it's pretty cool. Sort of a combination of Creepshow, The Crow and Star Wars (yes, I said Star Wars, and no, I'm not kidding). There's zombies, violence, blood, guns. Everything you would want. Diecast Post New Song Online

DIECAST have triumphantly returned with their latest effort, "Internal Revolution", which is set for a September 19 release via Century Media. According to a press release, "the album perfectly showcases their constant evolution to develop their own unique sound. With a new lineup intact, the group were able to expand upon their influences with no preconceived boundaries, and the results were unlike anything they ever expected. This is most evident on the blistering lead-off single, 'Fade Away', which can now be streamed at this location."

DIECAST spent the better part of this past year fine-tuning their new material before teaming up with longtime producer Paul Trust to track the long-awaited effort. The disc promises to be their biggest sounding and most dynamic offering yet. Paul Stoddard (vocals) says, "DIECAST are now stronger than ever. I feel 'Internal Revolution' is going to be one of the most diverse records to hit our scene to date. Guaranteed to be something for everyone." Check out the album cover artwork at this location. mewithoutYou Drop Off Warped Tour

With cancellations coming fast and furious, mewithoutYou has dropped off the Warped Tour. Like labelmates Underoath, the band is citing exhaustion, among other things:

"We will not be returning to Warped Tour. There are multiple reasons why... First and foremost being the bus... Our bus is currently in the shop getting some much needed TLC. No bus, no touring. Pretty simple math. Also, Aaron is still nursing his throat and will be back good as ever soon enough."

The pattern developing this year seems to be entirely around newer acts in their first or second runs on the tour. Previous cancellations came from Spitalfield, From First to Last, Gatsbys American Dream, He Is Legend and The Fall of Troy.
