This Week In Metal - August 24th, 2006

Band Photo: Lamb of God (?)

A third week, and to my surprise Slayer isn't number 1. Strapping Young Lad keeps the #1 spot for the second straight week. Meanwhile Slayer is at their heels and I would bet good money they takeover the top spot next week. Hatebreed's new album Supremecy could be the only thing that comes inbetween all of that but I highly doubt it. All That Remains holds strong as one of 4 bands that have stayed in the top 10 since TWIM was brought back. The second biggest highlight of the chart is the fact that All Shall Perish has broken thru and taken a spot inside the top 10. I've been a fan of these boys for a while and its amazing to see their name share spots with the likes of Shadows Fall and Unearth. And now for the chart courtesy of CMJ :

7 3Shadows FallFallout From the War31
86VoiVodKatorz26
94Between the Buried and MeThe Anatomy Of34
10*All Shall PerishThe Price Of Exsistance110

And now for the tunes, with a drastic change in this weeks chart. Unearth jumps from seven to first, while Slayer's Cult drops from first to tenth. Only six songs stayed on the chart, while we had four really strong debuts from great bands. Hatebreed, Mastodon and the new ATR single. Not to mention the ever-growing popularity of Human Abstract debuts. The singles chart is always shaky as the seeming flavor of the week is always ahead here, and now for the music, courtesy of MusicMatch:

One more time big UPS to all shall perish, they rock hard, if you havent checked them out yet, and enjoy bands like Heaven shall burn or say God Forbid, give them a listen. Shadows fall is proving they are around to stay, I can honestly see even BIGGER things in their future, and I said that the first time I listented to The Art of Balance. My boys from Unearth are rawkin the charts, its always good to see musicians on the chart, and not gimmicks. The singles chart does that some justice, but not enough as singles are harder to maintain then constant album sales, and killer f***in reviews, not to mention the rigerousness of a tour schedule up to that of LoG's or Mastodons etc.... I kept with the top 10 til we get more comments, but according to my admin panel, this chart is catching on, Id like to see a bit more discussion this time around /looks at RememberMetal?

SYL SYL SYL SYL..... Slayer is awesome but Dev and the lads are the sickest thing since... some really sick thing. TNB is the best thing these guys have ever done. A startaling contrast to Alien.

Glad to see the top three albums by bands I love. SYL deserve it, those guys are undeniably metal. One cannot fathom how metal they really are. Love it. Slayer - but of course. Unearth, Shadows Fall and VoiVod - definitely good seeing them around, too.

Kinda surprised to see Redneck still in the top ten songs after three weeks. I think Amon Amarth's "Cry Of The Black Birds" NEEDS to be on that list...and StoneSour can f*** right off. Not sure why You Suck and Cult aren't higher on the list, though, especially when you compare the ranking of the albums...

Havn't heard Mastodon's new song though, did we post a link? Might go have a look-see. I wanna hear that. Surely it's gotta be better than Defeatist?!!

in my humble opinion, the new unearth deserves its place at the top of this chart. they have stuck w/ the same mentallity for almost a decade now...hard work, and heavy heavy music. they deserve their accolades b/c they havent changed for anything like bigger record deals, more album sales or even expanding their fanbase, yet they continue to slaughter. much respect to those guys. on the other hand, i have to say that i used to love LOG. they were at the time of New American Gospel my favorite metal band, but the new album has dissappointed me tremendously. i know a lot of people are going to like it but to me it just sounds like a bunch of regurgitated riffs left over from "Ashes". also, randy's vocals are manipulated strictly for wider mass appeal. nothing wrong w/ that i guess, they have been around for 10 or so years and def paid their dues, but nonetheless it a dissappointing album. oh yeah, one more thing SLAYER!!!!!!!!!!

i was also dissappointed in the new SYL.....sounds forced and way too much like the DTB. too much of a departure from the "Alien" sound and apparently had to be out before their suckfest dates, but whatever, i still love em.

Cult has been out since 6.6.06, so it's time for a new Slayer song to make the chart by now. Skeleton Christ is by far my favorite from the new album, with Jihad as a close second.

yeah, Vic*ster, i was just wondering at what point in Slayer's career it was that they sold out. in the case of metallica you could make the argument that it was the black album that marked the beginning of the end. even w/ lamb of god, this new album is a departure ( good or bad depending on how you look at it). but, at what point in Slayer's career did they sell out??? the only radio that Slayer is played on is satellite, or late night on some truly great metal stations that have the balls to play extreme music. I really dont see the point in talking sh** about them (and they arent my favorite band). they are one of the only metal bands that will not conform their sound for anyone and if you think that they have, fine but i dont hear that much of a difference in their sound from reign in blood to the new album. just a thought

Slayer. eeew. what a joke. But, I thought all the fans would be happy they aren't #1. That would make them sellouts, and not "undergound" any more. make up your freakin minds people!!!

so when the radio stations pick up other metal bands, and start playing them alot, they are sell outs.. but not the same for Slayer?? OMG. You guys need to deal with the truth, and face it!~ Slayer is on the way to selling out and becoming main stream.. lalalalala! LMFAO

Let me get this straight for you. When a band completly changes their f***ing sound and then all of the sudden appears on the radio, as opposed to never being on it before, and their new sound it result of that, then they have sold out. IE Slipknot. Totally different "Direction" in their new album resulting in radio play, (I never heard the heretic anthem on the radio, much less eyeless or spit it out).

Um, you guys are the ones who have been saying all along that the new slayer doesn't sound like the old slayer. Is that not changing their sound? You are in DENIAL. You people refuse to accept bands to evolve and make new music, because when they do -- they are sell outs. GET OVER IT. Why would you want your favorite bands to sound the same on every fuc*king album? OMG.

Ok i have every slayer album and about oh a hundred + assorted deathmetal/blackmetal cd's.Slayer has been in decline ever since reign in blood i love slayer i really do BUT the new album is like a toothless tiger it is poor. They have sold out or at least metal extreme metal has passed em by they are now mainstream whether thru their choice or metal's in general so slayer fans buy it listen to it but sorry it is a shadow a fraction of past glories.Angel of death is infinitessimally better than anything on the new album it is almost a different band.If you want a good album from a band who stay truthfull to their roots try DEICIDE's-the stench of redemption later..........
