Motorhead's Lemmy To Receive 'Living Legend' Award
Lemmy Kilmister, the notorious bass player and vocalist of U.K. rock 'n' roll titans Motörhead, will be honored with the very first "Living Legend" award at this year's inaugural Classic Rock Roll of Honor, organized by Classic Rock magazine. Taking place on Tuesday, October 4, 2005 at London's Café De Paris, the Classic Rock Roll of Honor will celebrate the big names as well as the unsung heroes from the diverse world of rock 'n' roll and promises to take a fresh approach to the tired award ceremony format.
To coincide with the 30th Anniversary of Motörhead, the U.K.'s most revered rock 'n' roll outfit as well as, unbelievably, Lemmy's 60th birthday celebrations, the Classic Rock Roll of Honor will place a special emphasis on the often diluted "Lifetime Achievement" award category.
Rather than simply giving Lemmy the "Living Legend" award on the night, the Classic Rock Roll of Honor will dedicate an entire section of the evening's proceedings to pay homage to the remarkable achievements of one of the U.K.'s best-loved rock 'n' roll stars. The team behind Classic Rock magazine and the Classic Rock Roll of Honor have assembled a moving tribute package that comprises of testimonials and greetings to Lemmy from a raft of peers and young bands and musicians inspired by the star, as well as messages from fans of all ages. It is hoped that Lemmy and the rest of Motörhead will complete the evening with a brief acoustic set. This however, has not been confirmed by the band at this stage.
In addition to Lemmy's "Living Legend" award, there will be a further eight awards on the night, which will be announced soon. Classic Rock also has announced the categories and nominations for the very first Readers' Awards, which are voted for by the readers via text message ballot: More...
Soilwork Frontman Issues Ozzfest Update
Soilwork frontman, Björn "Speed" Strid, has posted an Ozzfest update on the band's official website:
Hi there!
I will excuse myself once again for not updating very frequently at the moment, the reason is that it's very hard to get a wireless connection here at Ozzfest. Finally today at Chicago Tweeter center i've got a connection in the corridors by the main stage. Actually as we speak, Mr.Bruce Dickinson is taping up "Happy Birthday" tape on the walls, above me and my wife's head as we're sitting down and checking our e-mails on the floor in the corridor... Talked to him for a while, he is a really cool guy!!
I really wanna thank all the people for coming out to the shows, we've had a blast so far and we eally don't mind getting up that early in the mornings. Every morning you're there rocking out, you guys are the best!!!
We'll see ya soon!!
Cheers, Speed

Dave Mustaine: Don't Compare Gigantour To Ozzfest
Megadeth leader Dave Mustaine, with his Gigantour up and running, says he doesn't want the festival to be compared with established tours such as Ozzfest and the Warped Tour.
Dave Mustaine told Launch Radio Networks he knows comparisons are inevitable, but he isn't encouraging them. "There are some other festivals that are out in similar nature," he said. "You know, Ozzfest has some bands from our genre and some of the subcultures and subgenres and stuff, but you know, my intention was never to be disrespectful to Ozzy or to Sharon (Osbourne) or to try to say 'Hey, Gigantour's better,' because, you know frankly, they're my friends. I would like to keep it that way."
In addition to Megadeth, Gigantour's line-up includes Dream Theater, Fear Factory, Life Of Agony, Nevermore, The Dillinger Escape Plan, Symphony X and Bobaflex.

Chevelle: Firing Bassist Was Hardest Decision
CHEVELLE drummer Sam Loeffler and singer/guitarist Pete Loeffler recently spoke to RollingStone.com about the departure of brother Joe Loeffler (bass) after a recent blowout in Kansas City.
"I love Joe — I'll always love my brother — and I'll do anything I can for him. But he hated to tour," Sam told RollingStone.com. "He was an unhappy guy on the road . . . We wanted him to take some time off to figure out what he wanted to do, but he wasn't willing to do that. He said, 'The only way I'm staying home is if you fire me.' It was the hardest decision we ever had to make.
"The way the band worked was, basically, I wrote all the music — I always have, I always will," said Pete. "Aside from being the drummer, Sam's place in the band is the business side of it. He's always talking to management and the label. Joe was always the one who just kind of played bass. He did that very well — he's a very talented bass player — but I don't think he ever really felt a passion. He was a third member. The chemistry worked as long as it could, but the fighting just got too old."
Pete and Sam haven't spoken with Joe since, and, according to the drummer, the rest of the Loeffler family is staying out of it. "He basically said he doesn't want to talk to us right now, and we want to be respectful of that," Sam said. "But we don't know what's going to happen when it comes to Thanksgiving."

3 Inches of Blood Replaces Drummer
Just days away from their U.S. tour with Chimaira et al, 3 Inches Of Blood have announced the departure of drummer Matt Wood. According to the band, "Matt informed us last month that he would be leaving the band once we got home at the end of June. The reasons given were both musical and personal, but there's no animosity between us. We respect Matt's decision, but are moving forward and still playing." For now, the group has enlisted the services of drummer Alexei Rodriguez (ex-Walls Of Jericho, Catharsis).

Ozzy Will Return For Chicago Ozzfest
Launch Radio Networks reports: Ozzy Osbourne should be ready for BLACK SABBATH's headlining set at Ozzfest tomorrow (July 30) at Tweeter Center in Tinley Park, Illinois. Osbourne was sick earlier this week and BLACK SABBATH cancelled their Ozzfest appearance in Holmdel, New Jersey, on Wednesday (July 27), which meant IRON MAIDEN got to do an extra-long set. A spokesperson told Launch that Osbourne is expected to play tomorrow at the Tweeter Center. The nature of Osbourne's illness hasn't been announced.
Osbourne told Launch that touring is a lot harder on him today than it used to be. "As we get older, we get more work," he said. "In the old days, you'd do, like, a three-week tour, and take six months off, you know? It was a luxury. Now, it's like a job."
The 10th annual edition of Ozzfest runs through September 4 in West Palm Beach, Florida.
Slayer's New Album To Be Released Via Warner Bros.
Warner Bros. Records has announced that American Recordings — headed by legendary hip-hop and rock producer Rick Rubin — has joined the Warner Bros. family of labels.
The partnership entails that American Recordings will sign and provide creative services for artists, while Warner Bros. will handle promotion, publicity, sales, marketing, and distribution. Current American Recordings artists who will make the transition include Swedish political punk rock band INTERNATIONAL NOISE CONSPIRACY, singer-songwriter DAN WILSON, and extreme metal pioneers SLAYER. American will be based out of Warner Bros.' Burbank, California, headquarters where Rubin will maintain an office.
In 2007, Warner Bros. will also acquire the rights to the extensive American Recordings catalog, which includes JOHNNY CASH, THE BLACK CROWES, the JAYHAWKS, SLAYER, and DANZIG. Warner Bros. was American's home from 1992 through 1997.
Now Rubin is excited to be back with Warner Bros., citing the stewardship of CEO Tom Whalley as his primary reason for returning. "Tom Whalley grew up in the record business in the same way that I did," Rubin says. "He understands the grass roots development of artists and the importance of growing real careers in a time when most executives are looking for short-term success, which ultimately yields short-sighted goals. Tom understands that if artists are developed and nurtured the right way from the beginning, they'll stick around for a long time.
"Of all the labels," Rubin adds, "Warner Bros. is the rock label. All the biggest acts on it are rock artists. The company has a better understanding of rock and eclectic music than any other in the industry. It's a perfect fit."
Whalley is equally excited about the deal with Rubin. "Rick has been a driving creative force in popular music for two decades, discovering new artists, nurturing established ones, and bringing about their success time and again," he says. "We are thrilled to have him back in the fold."
Rubin has produced such landmark hip-hop albums as RUN DMC's "Raisin' Hell", BEASTIE BOYS' "Licensed to Ill", and LL COOL J's "Radio", as well as best-selling music by such diverse artists as RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS, JAY-Z, SYSTEM OF A DOWN, TOM PETTY, WEEZER, AUDIOSLAVE, DIXIE CHICKS, and JOHNNY CASH. The co-founder of classic hip-hop label, Def Jam, with Russell Simmons, Rubin struck out on his own in 1988 and formed American Recordings. The label built its reputation with chart-topping hits by such artists as SYSTEM OF A DOWN, BLACK CROWES, and SIR MIX-A-LOT.
