Celtic Frost Prepares New Album
CELTIC FROST frontman Tom Gabriel Fischer has posted the following message on his official blog:
"Yes, I know, we're only making an album. It's not an earth-shattering event, and we never claimed it was (although, yes, this blog is quite pretentious at times). Nor will most people on this planet care. It's not even a mainstream album. Good. Nonetheless, every song on this album has a story. This is not about the lyrics, which are by themselves much more personal than anything we have written for CELTIC FROST in the past. But we have spent an unpredictably extended and emotionally and physically intense period of our lives writing, rehearsing, recording and producing this album. That's significant to us. And, judging, by the flood of reactions I am receiving on my e-mail account through this blog, it is significant to many others too, one way or another. It's our own microcosm of meaning.
"Every song is connected to events, personal or professional, that we will hardly ever forget. And there will surely be more in the coming weeks, as we are temporarily relocating to Hanover, Germany, at the end of July to conduct the final recording and mixing sessions at Horus Sound Studio. This is the studio — albeit now in a much more modern incarnation — where we produced the 'Into the Pandemonium' album in 1987. We expect to finally be finished the first week of September.
"There will be some friends who will come to see us, and — apart from a few closed sessions — the studio is also open for anybody who wants to say hello, as always.
"I was interviewed yesterday for a five-part documentary on Swiss rock history, produced for Swiss national TV. Mixed feelings. Questions were good and the people very nice, but how much do they actually know about their topic? Typical signals of a generalization and cursory approach. A surprise? No. Also seems they were a bit astonished at what I had to say. :-) But they'll include the footage of CELTIC FROST's very first public appearance, 'Into the Crypts of Rays' on Swiss TV, shot in 1985."
CELTIC FROST have selected HYPOCRISY/PAIN mainman Peter Tägtgren to co-produce their long-awaited comeback effort, tentatively titled "Dark Matter Manifest". The band willl enter Horus Sound Studio in Hannover, Germany on August 1 to begin recording their first collection of new material since 1990's "Vanity/Nemesis". Songtitles set to appear on the CD include "Obscured", "Incantation against You", "Ain Elohim" and "Temple of Depression".
CELTIC FROST, who have been mixing new demo material at Oakland Recording in Winterthur, Switzerland, have yet to secure a record deal for their upcoming CD.
Powerman 5000 Album Update
POWERMAN 5000 frontman Spider recently spoke to MTV.com about the band's as-yet-untitled fifth album, which they're hoping to release in early 2006.
Spider said the LP, which the band is self-producing, will have an "under-produced," stripped-down sound. "We're leaving in the mistakes," he said. "Kids aren't hearing those kinds of records any more — like the SEX PISTOLS — where things are out of tune, there are mistakes. Nowadays, everything's lined up to a grid on ProTools, and everyone's vocal is tuned to the perfect pitch. That's not what rock music should be."
"Every rock band comes out and makes that statement, you know, that this is going to be our heaviest album ever. I hate that. For me, I want to make the best record we can make — whether it's heavier or not, doesn't matter. Some of it will be supper-aggressive, some of it won't be."
Songtitles set to appear on the follow-up to 2003's "Transform" include "Heroes and Villains", "The Last Night on Earth" and "Treat Me Like a Stranger".
"We came out during the nü-metal explosion, and now, people talk about us in the same sentence as LIMP BIZKIT and sh--," Spider said. "We sort of got trapped in a world that we didn't belong in. We were put in a category with bands that I never really felt comfortable being compared to. But sometimes you find you get on this path and it takes you somewhere you didn't necessarily ever expect to be. So for me, this new record is going to be a statement. It's probably the record I should have made 10 years ago, the one that says, 'This is who I am, musically, and this is where my head is at.' "

S.O.D. To Finally Release DVD
Megaforce Records will release a new DVD from metal/hardcore pioneers S.O.D. (STORMTROOPERS OF DEATH) entitled, "20 Years of Dysfunction", on July 26, 2005. The DVD will include the classic "Pussywhipped" as a bonus CD and extensive liner notes celebrating 20 years of the band.
S.O.D. began in the mid-1980s during a break in the recording of ANTHRAX's "Spreading the Disease". What started out as a quick, satirical release for Scott Ian, Charlie Benante, Dan Lilker, and the infamous Billy Milano, S.O.D. has turned into a seminal band influencing countless hardcore, metalcore, and post-hardcore bands. Their first album, "Speak English Or Die", has sold over 400,000 copies worldwide and remains an underground classic.
"The great thing about this DVD is that it’s mostly shot from the angle and perspective of S.O.D. fans," Milano said in a statement. "No bullshit, just in-your-face performances the way they should be shot, with camcorders and handhelds."
Mushroomhead Push DVD Release Back Again
MUSHROOMHEAD have pushed their self-produced and filmed DVD back to an August 9th release date. A statement from 'St1tch' reads as follows:
"Hello everyone. I'm sorry to bring the news about the DVD being pushed until August 9th. I know you all have been waiting patiently for it to be released, we just had no idea orders were going to be such a success. Lumberjack (the distribution company) has decided to hold off to complete all orders around America. However, we are still receiving 1,000 copies and still plan on selling it at the show on the 25th to make sure we don't piss off fans that were going in hopes of getting the DVD that night. So, there is still a signing and you will be able to buy "Volume 1" this coming Monday at Peabody's. The DVD will be in stores August 9th. Sorry for the inconvenience... hope everyone is one the same page now."

Strapping Young Lad/Devin Townsend Band Updates
This lengthy update on Devin Townsend's bands Strapping Young Lad and the Devin Townsend band was posted on the HevyDevy Records website:
[Strapping Young Lad] has been busy on the road these last two months and some festivals gratified us with some very good moments. Gods Of Metal festival in Italy is definitively a carreer highlight for [frontman] Devin [Townsend] as SYL shared the stage with Iron Maiden and Slayer, and played in front ten of thousands of fans.
Thanks to Marlon that provided us a link to download a SYL recording at the Waldrock festival. You will be able to download the whole show HERE
The Sound Of The Underground Tour started on June 25 and Devin is thrilled about the shows SYL played so far :
"Our position on the bill gives us an opportunity to bring some metal to the more hard-core oriented fans at the festival who may not have heard us before. I really look forward to playing with and hooking up with some of the other bands again"
Check the tour section for an udpated list of the SYL shows. Most are SOTU shows but some are headlining and other appearances supporting Opeth. Again, dates are subject to change and cancellation and it’s not the band’s fault if they don’t play your town.
As Byron plays shows with Fear Factory after July 14, the band had to find a susbsitute Bass player for the rest of the tour. Jon Miller from Devil Driver will rehearse with the band on the road to learn the SYL material in a short amount of time. For this reason the two dates below will be probably cancelled as it will be very difficult for the band to prepare full headlining sets with a new Bass PlayerMore...

Gorefest Start Tracking Bass
Dutch death metal band Gorefest has posted this on their official website:
After two weeks of being in the studio working on lyrics and listening to the progress of the rest of the boys my time has come.
Yesterday morning (Wednesday) we started tracking my bass parts!
We already made the sound last Friday but we (That is me and Hans, one of the studio engineers) had no idea how it would keep up with the 4 tracks of rhythm guitars.
And it blows them away!!
If fact it provides a perfect low end grind that made Frank feel sick in his stomach when we played it on high level. (Which is what you do in a studio..)
I recorded 4 songs yesterday and when we played them to Ed this morning he had a rather stupid grin on his face that does not seem to disappear..
I've just been called in the studio to start working on my second song for today, so I've got to go.
Cheers

H.I.M. Frontman Ville Valo Engaged
Kerrang! reports: "It's a sad week for any ladies who lust after HIM frontman Ville Valo as the devilishly charming rocker has just got engaged to his long-time girlfriend Jonna Nygren. Ville proposed at the Finnish rock festival Ruisrock but instead of giving each other the customary engagement rings, the couple got their ring fingers tattooed with the letters 'DILLIGAF', which apparently stands for 'do I look like I give a fuck?'. How romantic. Congrats to the happy couple! Bet ville-stalker Bam Margera is gutted..."

Ballistic Bassist To Undergo Surgery
BALLISTIC mainman Tom Gattis (ex-DEUCE, TENSION, WARDOG) has posted the following message on the band's official web site:
"The blinding speed, complex runs, and most importantly the flawless-clean execution of Tim's [O'Connor, BALLISTIC bassist] bass parts are the foundation of the band's music. He sets the absolute highest standards for himself, and that necessitates that he is in 100% top playing condition to be able to play his parts to his satisfaction. To that end, Tim will be going in for an operation in August on his right hand (he is recovering from a similar operation to his left hand) to repair damage that years of constant playing has done. This will relieve him of a great deal of physical pain. We all wish Tim a speedy recovery and a quick return to the stage."
BALLISTIC, who recently announced the addition of singer Tony Taylor (TWISTED TOWER DIRE, ISEN TORR, OCTOBER 31) to the group's ranks, are working on the material for their second album, tentatively due in late 2005/early 2006.
