Warner Bros. Records has announced that American Recordings — headed by legendary hip-hop and rock producer Rick Rubin — has joined the Warner Bros. family of labels.

The partnership entails that American Recordings will sign and provide creative services for artists, while Warner Bros. will handle promotion, publicity, sales, marketing, and distribution. Current American Recordings artists who will make the transition include Swedish political punk rock band INTERNATIONAL NOISE CONSPIRACY, singer-songwriter DAN WILSON, and extreme metal pioneers SLAYER. American will be based out of Warner Bros.' Burbank, California, headquarters where Rubin will maintain an office.

In 2007, Warner Bros. will also acquire the rights to the extensive American Recordings catalog, which includes JOHNNY CASH, THE BLACK CROWES, the JAYHAWKS, SLAYER, and DANZIG. Warner Bros. was American's home from 1992 through 1997.

Now Rubin is excited to be back with Warner Bros., citing the stewardship of CEO Tom Whalley as his primary reason for returning. "Tom Whalley grew up in the record business in the same way that I did," Rubin says. "He understands the grass roots development of artists and the importance of growing real careers in a time when most executives are looking for short-term success, which ultimately yields short-sighted goals. Tom understands that if artists are developed and nurtured the right way from the beginning, they'll stick around for a long time.

"Of all the labels," Rubin adds, "Warner Bros. is the rock label. All the biggest acts on it are rock artists. The company has a better understanding of rock and eclectic music than any other in the industry. It's a perfect fit."

Whalley is equally excited about the deal with Rubin. "Rick has been a driving creative force in popular music for two decades, discovering new artists, nurturing established ones, and bringing about their success time and again," he says. "We are thrilled to have him back in the fold."

Rubin has produced such landmark hip-hop albums as RUN DMC's "Raisin' Hell", BEASTIE BOYS' "Licensed to Ill", and LL COOL J's "Radio", as well as best-selling music by such diverse artists as RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS, JAY-Z, SYSTEM OF A DOWN, TOM PETTY, WEEZER, AUDIOSLAVE, DIXIE CHICKS, and JOHNNY CASH. The co-founder of classic hip-hop label, Def Jam, with Russell Simmons, Rubin struck out on his own in 1988 and formed American Recordings. The label built its reputation with chart-topping hits by such artists as SYSTEM OF A DOWN, BLACK CROWES, and SIR MIX-A-LOT.

Eh Slayer have already collaborated with Ice T on the track disorder you idiot, and it was a good song.

Get a grip of yourselves Slayer will release an album just like the rest and it'll sell slightly better than Diablos In Musica as heavy music is popular right now and the major label may help sales a bit as well, It's Slayer, hey don't know how to change sound.

Yeah because before this deal you had to go through years of study and several rigourous initiation rights before you were even given the right to see a Slayer album cover....oh that's right you didn't, you can walk into any record store on the planet and pick up a slayer record,

"kerry king needs to watch his step around those metalcore fags cos he might get burnt"

why? do they carry flame throwers about with them?

This is typical a bunch of 14 year old kids read about a band changing label and cry sell-out, or start saying they will change.

I don't think there's anything to worry about. This is Slayer we're talking about!
Over twenty years and they've never strayed far from their roots.
Besides, if I remember correctly, Rick Rubin produced Reign In Blood.
Even though Rick Rubin has been done a lot of hip-hop,
everytime he's involved, you get great ablums! Something about that dude brings
out the best in bands.

This is not good, signing upto a major label GUARANTEES musical corruption and crappiness.

It's not changing label that makes them sellouts, its the label they signup to. Many labels don't care and just are in it for the cash and p***y. Just remember that no-one saw this coming when other bands like Metallica sold out. We've already seen Slayer release "Undisputed Attitude" which was a big musical disaster for them, and also a huge change from metal to agressive punk (Which translates to selling out) Why did they do this? To appeal to the punk scene. Then Diabolus In Music was released 2 years later, and the production was awful, and the lyrics were worse!

Then, to top it off, we had these guys flogging the dead horse by releasing God Hates Us All. More over-production, yet again. I don't see how anyone could even call those 3 albums real music. What's more, they now show upto ozzfest, an awful place where 85% of the bands there are just pure horse sh**. Not only do these guys show up, but also Iron Maiden, which is even worse because Iron Maiden are one of my top bands, but thats a different story...

Heavy Music is now popular? Your damn right it is! Now we have kids running around thinking that Nu Metal is 'cool' and 'heavy'. Over-production and poor guitar playing doesn't make you heavy, it actually covers up for lack of skill, and it's designed to appeal to anyone, kinda like how pop is designed to be popular for 8-12 year olds. Which also brings me to my next point. Rick Rubin has been well known for helping with rock and hip-hop artists. Why, after almost 20 years, would he help a metal band that is selling out? Well what happened when Metallica sold out?

There were almost as many people who bought St. Anger as there were people who bought Master of Puppets! Which is, on average, their best album! Do you see where i'm coming at? Selling out gets you attention from all the cash-loving producers. I mean, Rick Rubin never really made a decision like this until these guys came along (and also System of a Down, another crappy band).

When Rick Rubin helped on production with Slayer's best album (Reign In Blood) He didn't see potential (well Rick Rubin only sees potential in bands that appeal more to kids, coz kids are willing to throw money at any band and think its cool/trendy), but now with slayer's over-the-top corporal sellout wishy washy gung-ho anti-christ crap written all over their 'music', and their over-produced 'cool' sound, this opens the doors for more 'ecclectic' people to discover this band, or to be more precise, an excuse for "They sound so heavy that kids will love this crap!".

I mean for f***s sake people! Look at the obvious generalities here! Metallica signed upto a major label with Bob Rock as producer! Who, just like Rick Rubin, mostly does rock music (but not hip-hop in his case). Now look at the results? Do you see where i'm getting at?

PEOPLE WHO DON'T UNDERSTAND/KNOW ANYTHING/APPRECIATE METAL CAN'T EXACTLY SIGN UP ONE OF THE FORMER LEGENDS OF METAL. Rick Rubin is a rock producer. Slayer are a metal band. That's like trying to make a Pop producer signup a Industrial group. He will f***up the sound! He could make it as bad that it will not even sound like the slayer that I once loved.

Oh just forget it, slayer have already soldout, because they no longer are as fast or as thrashy as they once used to be in the 80's and early 90's. Slayer never died coz Dave Lombardo left, because Divine Intervention had a different drummer, and they still sounded very fast and thrashy. Dave Lombardo's return won't bring too much promise, hopefully the drumming on the next album will atleast be good, or else i'll just give up on the sellouts...

Sorry about that comment before, my critic side came out too quick lol.

but this really shocks me a lot, I honestly just have to say that if Slayer can pick up their game, I honestly will be surprised, but there are a number of things they have done that are proving that they are going to fall into the trap that Metallica are still caught up in. Oh and the dude who made the comment about the 80's metal bands material being "p***y", let me tell you that your a f***ing moron who doesn't understand metal, and your probably some kid who worships some neo-nazi Nu metal band like Slipknot.

Well you tell me if the past 3 albums they released are considered listenable. I don't consider going from a fast speed/thrash metal band to a heavy over-produced metal band for the past 9 years to be much of a accomplishment, or sticking to their sound either. Slayer are now like Metallica, they've peaked in the 80's and will never reach that ever again because they're too lazy.

f***ing Ridiculous!!! I'll agree any day with somebody calling Metallica sell outs,
but Slayer? COME ON!!! The past three albums were great! It showed a slightly
different side of Slayer, but they were still intense and brutal as always.
Undisputed Attitude...Thrash metal came from hard core punk, alright!
I know a lot of metal heads don't want to admit that, but it's true. The songs on that album
were songs that influenced their sound. Besides, sell out is defined by others having
complete control over the music and creative process in order to sell more records.
What Slayer has is creative freedom. There is a big difference.
Labels determine other things like how the records will be distributed,
which is only real reason for a band to sign with a record label.
A band like Slayer that has been around for over two decades knows what the hell they're doing.
Don't question them, because they won't let us down.

The name "stealthwarrior" must be a big hit in the dungeons and dragons chat rooms. Too bad you don't know d**k about SLAYER or metal. Rick Rubin has not produced rap since his infamous split with Russell Simmons a long @ss time ago. He has been involved with almost everything that SLAYER has done since they left Metal Blade (again, a long @ss time ago). Rick Rubin is NOT Bob Rock! When was the last time you attended a SLAYER show? The albums you criticize as being "overproduced" were only lesser albums (they were still very good) due to the absence of Dave Lomdardo. Guess what? He's back. If you had seen them perform in the last two years, you might have recognized the difference. You definitely would not have called them lazy. They performed Reign In Blood in it's entirety (a Rick Rubin produced album). This new album coming out should be close to completion meaning warner bros. will only be involved in distribution.
You have exposed yourself as ignorant; now go away.
Better yet, go to a SLAYER show and feel like an idiot for ever comparing them to metallica.
