Kevin Talley Talks About New Daath Album

Kevin Talley talked with Sickdrummer.com about his experience working with Daath on their latest album:

'The new Daath was recorded by Jason Suecof and Mark Lewis (they've done Bury your Dead, Devildriver, Chimaira) down in Florida. Finally, I have been able to capture a killer drum sound with them! Utilizing real acoustics, like recording Dying Fetus's Destroy the Opposition. So this drum sound isn't all fake like 90% of the other stuff these days.

"Daath just released new music this past week and I am very stoked about the great response we've gotten. I wasn't really a part of the last Daath record, but I helped write this entire record. It really took me back to the DF days, when I could really connect with other writers who are musically capable and able to handle an asshole drummer.

"The new Daath drum parts are very similar to my old school drumming except, in my opinion, more innovative. I have always been a drummer who writes drum parts to complement, not copy, guitar riffs. This is why I didn't write well with Chimaira. They simply wanted me to copy the riffs which is boring and overdone these days.

"Now more than ever, I have taken to a very unique writing style. It is, however, very very subtle. It's like the first main riff in Sepultura's Chaos A.D. You may think the kick drums follow the riff, but they don't... The beat is different and and adds a ton of groove by complementing the riff. To notice it, you must listen to the riff and then turn off the music. Next, hum the riff in your head and imagine what beat YOU would write to that same riff. Now, turn the music back on and see if the beats match up. Sometimes they will, but mostly they won't. This is not the case when you listen to Fear Factory or Chimaira, which are more straight forward drum parts. Although I added as many good drum parts I could in Chimaira, my drumming on the self titled album is pretty average IMO."

Ephel Duath Reveals "Through My Dog's Eyes"

Italian avant-garde metallers EPHEL DUATH will release their fourth studio album, "Through My Dogs Eyes," in January 2009.

EPHEL DUATH has never been one to take the traditional approach to creating music and their latest effort takes this outlook even further. "Through My Dogs Eyes" is based on a bizarre concept conjured up by guitarist and founding member Davide Tiso, in which the entire album is written from the perspective of a dog. Tiso explains: "I wrote a few short stories and it was really fun for me to imagine myself as a dog and to imagine the world from a dog's perspective. The challenge was to translate the words into lyrics."

From opening track "Gift," which Tiso describes as being about "A cat that the dog kills for the owner as a gift, and he asks the owner if he is happy with the present", to the thought-provoking "Promenade," a song about a walk in the park which takes a twist when the owner questions himself as to why he's not as carefree and happy with life as his dog is, the barking mad brilliance runs throughout the course of the whole album. "Every song is a window into the dog's mind or an event," Tiso continues, "The album touches on a lot of things, both deep and sometimes silly."

It's not only the lyrics in "Through My Dogs Eyes" which are written from the dog's perspective - rather the entire album, including the music, is based around this unique and previously unexplored concept. "The music in this case is the soundtrack of the thoughts of the dog - at times you can hear the dog running," Tiso elaborates.

"Through My Dogs Eyes" is due to be released through Earache Records on January 26th, 2009.

Exodus Posts Re-Recorded Songs Online

Exodus has posted the re-recorded versions of "Metal Command" and "A Lesson In Violence" online at their official Myspace. The songs come from the bands new album "Let There Be Blood" which is a re-recording of the bands classic 1985 debut album, "Bonded By Blood." The album will be released on October 28th.

In addition Gary Holt, founding member and guitarist, has released a comment on recording "Hell's Breath," a rare track from the band's 1980's demo. "Hell's Breath" will be a bonus track included on the Let There Be Blood release: "When Tom and I finished the drum tracks for Let There Be Blood, we had a half a day of studio time left, we tried to come up with something to record with the spare time we had. One thing led to another, and next thing you know I started playing the opening riff to "Hell's Breath", which is when we both said "Hell Yeah!" Funny thing is, neither of us had played the song for two-plus decades, so we were going by memory on the exact arrangement of the song. It wasn't until I started deciphering my old lyrics from some live MP3's that a friend had sent me, that I realized we had gotten the original solo section wrong! Just slightly different, but overall, this one came out so killer, almost makes me want to track some more of those old classics!"

Stronger Anti-Piracy Laws Passed

A new RIAA supported bill as been signed by United States President, Geroge Bush JR which creates a position known as Intellectual Property Czar. This position means that said person will be reporting directly to the president as part of a new government office known as Office of the United States Intellectual Property Enforcement Representative.

The law contains the following key points:

* The law toughens criminal laws against piracy and counterfeiting.

* The Recording Industry Association of America and Motion Picture Association of America backed the bill, as did the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.

* It is called the PRO-IP Act

* The ‘czar’ position will not be filled before Bush leaves office.

* Preliminary punishments involve seizing of pirated copies and the device on which the copies are stored. Hefty fines may also follow.

The PRO-IP act was originally signed off on by the House of Representatives on May 8. It is now law thanks to the signature of President Bush.

Dream Theater Enters The Studio

Dream Theater keyboardist Jordan Rudess has posted a handful of audio and video updates from the first few days spent in the studio recording Dream Theater's upcoming tenth album.

The follow-up to 2007's "Systematic Chaos," which debuted in the ARIA chart at #23 in its first week of release, the new album will be their second with Roadrunner Records.

In his online diary "The Wizard's Log," Rudess said progress has already been made in the short period of time they've been locked away in the studio.

"It's going very well. Notes are flying as usual, there's lots of inspiration flying around, lots of food, lots of Starbucks. We're having a good time, it's good to hang with the boys again and do our thing. We're hard workers when we're at it and it's been really very cool," he said.

Sender Receiver Confirms Break-up

Iowa's Sender Receiver has formally announced their break-up via the following statement from guitarist Maxxwell Lange:

"This is honestly the hardest thing I've ever had to write. Well there is really no easy way of saying this but...after almost 3 years as well as 3 vans, 1 trailer, countless broken equipment and bones sender receiver is calling it a day.

"There is no one really to blame for this honestly, its been almost a long time coming. The band changed lineups more times than Zao has basically. The heart is still there but no body to continue on.

"The final nails in the coffin have come within the last few weeks, our longtime now singer Brett's family has been going through quite some financial troubles as well as some deaths have occurred and it has not been easy for him to be there for everyone so he hasn't been able to get back on his feet enough to move back out to Iowa. Luke our drummer for the last 8 or 9 months is having to step down himself due to financial and "health problems". This is a heavy loss to the band and leaving me once again being the only member.
