Interview

Interview with Amon Amarth's Johan Söderberg

"I am the only one in my family who plays an instrument," says Amon Amarth guitarist Johan Söderberg of first picking up the guitar when he was a 19-year-old in Tumba, Sweden. "I was playing lots of Metallica riffs – James Hetfield was a big inspiration in the beginning – and Iron Maiden was one of the first bands I started to listen to. Also a big influence was the German band Accept. I was very into them when I was a kid, and I wanted to also play metal riffs."

Seven years later, Söderberg riffed his way into Amon Amarth, probably best known for their melodic instrumentation and Viking themes. "We friends since we grew up, and then one day they fired their old guitar player and they need to find replacement for their first tour. They asked me." After a successful stint on the road, Söderberg joined the band on a more permanent basis with 1999's "The Avenger," the second Amon Amarth album in the Metal Blade catalogue. Söderberg's guitar techniques have been an integral part of the band's sound ever since.

Currently invading North America on a headlining tour de force to promote their latest album "Twilight of the Thunder God," Amon Amarth has played to full venues in nearly every city. Before hitting the stage at their Montreal stop, Söderberg graciously took the time to fill us in about making "Twilight of the Thunder God," the band's future with Metal Blade Records, and life on the tour bus. Interview With Metallica Tribute Band Battery

I was fortunate to catch up with Metallica Tribute band Battery on October 17th, 2008 at Magic City Music Hall in Binghamton, New York. Although I wasn't able to meet with all of the band because the drummer had to run across the street to guitar center and get "fog juice" as he put it, I was still able to meet with guitarist/singer Jason, lead guitarist Jay, and bass player Phil. Here's what they had to say: More...

On the night of October 10th, Finnish mythology came to life at El Corazon in Seattle, WA when Amorphis dropped in town. Along with these Finns came Switzerland’s Samael and Virgin Black from down under. Also on the bill were two local Seattle bands, Black Breath and Asema. Black Breath opened the show with some extended groove-metal hardcore and metalcore screaming, pumping energy into the crowd and prepping them for the rest of the other bands. More...

Balfor Posts Satyricon Cover Online

Ukrainian Black Metallers BALFOR have made available for streaming their cover version of SATYRICON’s "K.I.N.G." The track, which the band recorded at the Blacklight Studio in Kiev, will appear on the “Dominions of Satyricon” tribute CD that is due for release shortly on the Empire Records 606 label. Front man and guitarist Thorgeir commented “I have a lot of respect for SATYRICON’S work, and 'K.I.N.G' is probably one of my favourite tracks of theirs, so I was really keen to get involved in the project. We didn’t want to record a straight copy, and I think the style we chose to use for the guitar break probably makes it a little more “metal” than the original, and I’m sure there will be the usual armchair critics ready to criticise us for our version, but what the hell, we all had a great time making it!”

Returning to BALFOR in time for the recording of 'K.I.N.G' was the band's original drummer Erland, who had previously left to concentrate on other projects. “It’s good to have Erland back in the ranks” Thorgeir went on to say. “We were very lucky that he became available again at the right time to take over from the departing Vortigern. Vortigern is a great drummer and a good friend to the band, and his work on the new album is very much appreciated, but he wanted to move away from the style of music BALFOR plays, and into something completely different, and we wish him every success for the future”.

The band is in the process of adding the finishing touches to their first full-length album “Barbaric Blood,” and will shortly be looking for a conventional label for its release, having previously released their 2006 “Pure Barbaric” EP via the internet. "K.I.N.G," together with two preview tracks from the new album, are available for streaming on BALFOR’s MySpace page.

Candiria May Still Release New Recordings

Candiria guitarist John LaMacchia has issued an update regarding the latest happenings in the Candiria camp:

"First off, at the end of this year the first of a 4 volume series of remix/interpretations 12" LP's will be released on my own label, Rising Pulse Records. This series will be called 'Toying With The Insanities.' With contributions from artists such as Dub Trio, Dalek, Kayo Dot, Pole, Navicon Torture Technologies, Friendly Bears, Rocky George... yeah, that's right, Rocky George from Suicidal Tendencies.

"This will be a limited edition release only available on vinyl which will come with a free MP3 download for those of you without a record player. There will only be 250 of each volume pressed so these things are going to fly outta here like hotcakes out of a white trash Waffle House wedding.

"Second, 'Kiss The Lie' is a dead issue. Hate to say it, but consider it as such. We tried, I'm sorry! I personally tried so freakin hard. Believe me, it ain't happening. Sorry fans. There is a light at the end of that dark hopeless tunnel though...

"There has been talk of new recordings, new ideas, possibly new releases in the not so distant future. So, with that being stated, keep your eye on [our Myspace] because we are moving forward! This series of remixes and interpretations is for the true Candiria fans that understand that when you are truly a Candiria fan. Expect the unexpected, but expect to be pleasantly surprised. Stay tuned folks. We are back on track... officially."
