Lamb Of God's Chris Adler Is Proud Vegetarian

The Lamb of God drummer was recently featured at activist website PETA, and also has an interesting print ad supporting the furry masses.

"Chris told us he was 'always really into having pets and felt a real connection with animals'from an early age, and although he stopped eating red meat when he learned the facts about factory farming, he still ate chicken—until he saw a truck full of chickens on their way to slaughter. "We were on tour and saw a chicken truck go by with these chickens that were just bleeding—it was just disgusting. And that was it. I haven't had a piece of it since." Like us, he believes it's important that people are educated about what's really happening in factory farms and slaughterhouses. 'The issue with the whole thing is education and information. Most people don't think about it.' "

Celtic Frost Forced To Cancel Mexican Dates

Celtic Frost have posted this message via their official myspace account:

"We were very proud and truly delighted to be invited to play our first headline concerts in Mexico this summer. As we stated many times, playing in Mexico was a long-held desire of ours. And almost everywhere we performed on this globe in the course of the "Monotheist" tour, there would be Mexican Celtic Frost fans who asked us when the band would finally come to their country.

It is with infinite regret, then, that we have to announce that we are forced to postpone the two Mexican concerts to a later date. Our drummer, Franco Sesa, has been diagnosed with an acute otitis media (an inflammation of the middle ear) which has affected the inner ear and severely impairs his sense of balance, among other serious symptoms. The inflammation first became evident when we traveled to Finland to perform our most recent show. Franco's condition deteriorated rapidly during the flight, and he subsequently checked himself into Oulu's hospital shortly before midnight. It was only due to luck and the abbreviated festival live set that he was able to perform with us the next night. Upon Franco's return to Zurich, he immediately reported for medical treatment.

We are extremely sorry to now have to announce that his condition has unfortunately not improved as quickly as hoped and predicted, and Franco was thus declared unfit to travel and perform by his doctor this afternoon.

We are of course aware that no words can make up for cancelled concerts, especially such highly anticipated ones. But we wish to express our sincere apologies to all of those who had intended to come to our Mexican concerts on August 10 and 11, to all those Mexican fans who have written to us in anticipation these past few weeks, and to the promoter in Mexico, who worked so hard to make these concerts possible. We are still very much looking forward to come to Mexico under better circumstances in the near future to make up for the disappointment that this situation is causing.

Tom Gabriel Fischer, August 7, 2007"

Artists Pay Tribute To Max Cavalera

Brazil's Roadie Crew and Argentina's Jedbangers magazines recently collaborated on a very special story on SOULFLY/ex-SEPULTURA frontman Max Cavalera. In addition to arranging a lengthy interview with Max conducted by Thiago Sarkis and Fernando Ibáñez, the two publications invited several world-renowned musicians who witnessed and/or toured with Cavalera in the early years of his career to talk about his importance to the heavy metal scene and to reveal interesting stories about him and SEPULTURA. This ultimate tribute to the most important and influential South American metal musician and band ever is the cover story in the brand new issue of Roadie Crew (which is out on the newsstands right now) and will be a highlight in Jedbangers' next issue, which will be released in two weeks (featuring MEGADETH's Dave Mustaine on the cover).

Here is what some of heavy metal's most renowned musicians have had to say about Max Cavalera and SEPULTURA:

Lemmy Kilmister (MOTÖRHEAD):

"Max Cavalera is a very important man. He with the rest of SEPULTURA were the first Brazilian band to play outside of Brazil, and gain a large, fanatical following. We met them in 1991 when we played together, and we soon realized they were arrogant sons of bitches same as we were! Since then we've played with Max, SEPULTURA, then SOULFLY, and with SEPULTURA featuring Derrick, the big lad. They always put on a great show, the fans go crazy, and they keep pushing the odds. Luck to them."

Vinnie Paul Abbott (HELLYEAH, ex-PANTERA, DAMAGEPLAN):

"Max is metal! We had the pleasure of having both SEPUTURA and SOULFLY touring with PANTERA and every night they gave us a run for the money. Max writes intense lyrics and delivers them with conviction and passion. His riffs are crushing and he has always had a great metal guitar sound. In short, Max is a metal god and he lives and breathes it every day. He and his bands put Brazil on the heavy metal map and brought a new tribal feel to the scene. So, here's to Max: 'dente preto my brother!!!'"

Mille Petrozza (KREATOR):

"I've known Max since '85. He was my first penpal from Brazil. Back then his name was Max Possessed and his brother Igor drew a self-made SEPULTURA t-shirt for me. Max is still a good friend who hasn't changed a bit over the years. If we run into each other on festivals nowadays it's always cool and relaxed. Max is one of metal's most creative and down-to-earth characters. A living legend!"

Kelly Shaefer (ATHEIST, NEUROTICA, UNHEARD):

"Max Cavalera is a fucking living legend, easily one of the most influential characters to ever play metal. When we first met years ago during the recording of 'Beneath the Remains', I was fortunate enough to work with him on a tune called 'Stronger Than Hate'. I wrote some lyrics, and helped him with his pronunciations, etc., because at that point he was not speaking English nearly as well as he does today. When I first heard the finished product, I was blown away at the quality of the music of SEPULTURA: they had great riffs, massive drumming, and it was quite memorable. I think since then, he has influenced many, many bands, and many in today's metal scene owe him a great deal of gratitude. I have maximum respect for Max, and all his work including SOULFLY. I tip my metal hat to you Max, you're a bad-ass mutherfucker!!!"

L.G. Petrov (ENTOMBED):

"Max and SEPULTURA were the ones that opened the doors for many bands from South America, and they got the rest of the world's attention with their full on thrash metal! I love Max's aggressive and energetic vocals. Personally he is one of my favorite singers of all time."

David Vincent (MORBID ANGEL):

"I've always had good thoughts of Max. I'm not only a contemporary and a friend, but also a fan. From SEPULTURA's 'Morbid Vision' death metal days to the innovation of SOULFLY, Max forged a path that in my opinion has given tremendously to the world of music. His early successes helped introduce the world to many new Brazilian artists who may not have had the same opportunities previously. I've seen the 'drink 'till you drop' days of the early 1990s and now the balanced, spiritual plateau he has achieved today, and Max remains a true star. From myself and the rest of MORBID ANGEL: 'Obrigado meu Amigo'!"

Rob Zombie To Tour In October

The Pulse of Radio (formerly Launch Radio Networks) reports: Now that Rob Zombie has completed work on his third film as a writer and director, a remake of the horror classic "Halloween", the rocker-turned-filmmaker is setting his sights on the road. Zombie told The Pulse of Radio that he'll go on tour in October and stay out for a couple of months before turning to his next project. "Me and the guys have been talking, and we're, like, you know, gonna start rehearsing soon and, you know, we'll be back on the road in October," he said. "We'll probably quit right around Christmas time, take a break for that, and then who knows what — maybe make a new record or start another movie or something, I don't know."

Zombie says he'll hit the road with at least one other major act, whose name he couldn't reveal. Dates and venues are also yet to be announced.

The singer was originally in the running to open some fall dates for BLACK SABBATH offshoot band HEAVEN AND HELL, but couldn't commit to that because it was too close to the opening of "Halloween".

"Halloween" arrives in theatres on August 31.

Zombie will release his first-ever live album on September 18.

Gene Hoglan Issues Update

Drummer Gene Hoglan formerly of DARK ANGEL, DEATH, STRAPPING YOUNG LAD and TESTAMENT has issued the following update:

"Well, hello everyone, GUESS WHAT? MY SHIRTS ARE FINALLY ON SALE! YAY!

"And Jeez, that was like pulling teeth! What was supposed to be a quick, simple little endeavor took over 8 months from concept to completion. Ho-LEE! All for some stupid SHIRTS!

"But, as you can see the designs, they're bad as fuck, and this initial run of T-shirts and work shirts will range all the way from size medium to 4XL (the 5XLs will be on the next order, ya BALLOONS!), and the girlie-T 'boybeaters' will run from medium to large. Plus, we've got the system down pretty good around here, so your order will get shipped out same day, next day at the latest. And, for those females who would be interested, I'm going to be running a 'Hoglan Hottie of the Month' section over on my website, and how that's gonna work is this; when you buy a shirt and it is delivered to you, take (or have taken) a few shots of yourself modeling it in as sexy a way as you see fit, send 'em in, and you will then be well on your way to that 'T-shirt modeling career' you've always wanted. It's gonna be awesome!

"To order one (or TEN!), just go back to my page, and punch up any of the 3 design pics, and it'll take you directly to my shop!

"Now, I gotta admit, we're still working out the bugs on the 'Shop' end (sorry Europe, for not being able to order shirts! I think we have that bug ironed out now), and that's the main reason I've been waiting to pull the trigger on this whole thing. But, since I just got impatient, and against my advisors here at GHI, I decided to damn the torpedoes and make my little announcement anyway.

"To go along with all of this, my website, HoglanIndustries.com is now also up and running, so stop by and check it out! That is DEFINITELY a work-in-progress, so, cut me some slack on that one. I also have a brand new GeneHoglanMusic page up on Myspace. You can find it here: myspace.com/genehoglanmusic. It'll soon be featuring tons of music from me you don't ordinarily hear too much. Except, right now it's got a buncha stuff you might have heard already, but I'll get one of my lab-coats here at GHI to fix that.

"Now, on to my DVD, 'The Atomic Clock'. I realize that I've been keeping relatively quiet about it of late, but I do want to say that we've completed the filming and editing of it, and it has come out great! I'm really excited! Now, for the last couple weeks while I was in Australia, New Zealand and Alaska with UNEARTH, the minions here at GHI have been finalizing the cover art for it, and it will be going on sale the first couple weeks in September, just past my birthday! What better present can ya give to Gene than by giving yourself the prescence of Gene in your DVD player? I'm all for it! Again, closer to it's release date, I'll be writing a much more detailed account.

"Well, that's about it for that subject for now. Oh, and by the way, for the Aussie fans who will be attended the UNEARTH shows, thanks for buying shirts!

"Speaking of which, I had a real good time jammin' with the boys down there. Ken, a big ball of loud, Slo, my bro and best roomie ever, Mr Phipps, the man commands respect when he walks into a room, and Buz, quite possibly the most hilarious dude to ever be on tour. It was a blast, and I wish them all the best in the future. Yehyehyeh!

"On a quick aside, the tour got off to quite an auspicious start upon touch-down in New Zealand. I'm cruising through customs, when they throw up an X-ray machine upon exiting. Who DOES that? Anyway, they X-ray my stuff, see my contraband, and freak. Alarms, sirens, dogs, screaming guards, high-powered rifles all pointed at my head, the whole shebang. All for the BURRITO I was 'smuggling' from LAX. I'd bought it, taken a bite, and shoved it down to the bottom of my bag, and promptly forgot about it. Oh yeah, I'm kiddin' about the dogs and guards and the whole freak-out part, but it woulda made a way better story if it did happen. Anyway, they take me into the corner and start hittin' me with, 'This is food, you filled out the card that says you're not bringing in food, yet this is food.' And the customs goof has apparently never seen a burrito before, 'cause he's lookin' at it like it's a Martian relic or something. Then he writes it up as a 'meat sandwich,' and I'm like, 'Hey! That's not a 'meat sandwich', it's a burrito!' And he's like, 'A baa…what? How do you spell that?' And I tell him, 'Hey, it ain't my job to teach you how to spell 'burrito', Customs Goof.' Anyway, I do not get off lightly. They charge me TWO HUNDRED DOLLARS right then and there. Jeez! I told 'em, 'I can get rid o' this evidence right here and now, Customs Goof,' but they wanted my dough, not my satisfied belly. Bogus…so, that was the Most Expensive. Burrito. Ever. Damn, I shoulda keistered it…

"Burrito-smuggling. Sounds pervy."

Korn Guitarist Comments On Terry Bozzio

Cody McDevitt of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette recently conducted an interview with KORN guitarist James "Munky" Shaffer. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow:

On why the new album is untitled:

"We did come up with a few names for it, but it started to feel forced. Who says we have to title the album? So we decided to not do it. That's just kind of how it happened."

On the "MTV Unplugged" performance:

"I think for me it was kind of cool because we did the 'Unplugged' thing and I was never a really big CURE fan. After we did the song with them, we went back and listened to some of their records. I kind of really liked their stuff. There's some really dark and sad songwriting. I think that had some influence on the record as well."

On problems with temporary drummer Terry Bozzio:

"There were certain demands that he made. We weren't ready to meet those demands. We just brought him in to write. It's like some chick that you hang out with and all of a sudden they want to move in. What do you say to that? 'You were supposed to stay for the weekend, but you moved in all your (stuff).' It was kind of like that.

"He was a great guy and a phenomenal drummer. But the demands that he made were offensive. He wanted to be a member of the band, and that included ownership. We were like, 'What? You want to have 25 percent of everything?' We can't just sign away the right to music on a whim. Then all of a sudden he slaps us with this."

Circus Diablo Drop Off Ozzfest, Black Tide Dropped

Circus Diablo announced last Friday that they dropped off this years Ozzfest. A statement from front-man Billy Morrison reads:

"As I sit here in Dallas, TX, on the bus that has taken us from our home town of Los Angeles, to the middle of the South, it pains me to tell you all that we have to call it a day for now on the Ozzfest 2007. It has been a fantastic four weeks and we have had an amazing time. But two of our band, Ricky [Warwick, guitar] and Brett [Scallions, bass], have wives that are expecting babies any day now, and we just cannot continue heading east with that hanging over us. The guys need to be with their wives, and we all respect that. I hope you all understand that we have done our absolute best to get as far as we could this time around.

We will be heading back to Los Angeles tonight and we will regroup over the next few weeks and will be looking to head out again in support of our record in October. The babies will be well and truly in the world and fending for themselves by then!"

Black Tide, who were brought on to replace Circus Diablo, have already been dropped from the tour. Word is that they were too young to play on the Jagermeister-sponsored second stage.

The Hidden Hand Announce Tour Dates

THE HIDDEN HAND, the band featuring hard rock guitar legend Scott "Wino" Weinrich (ST. VITUS, THE OBSESSED, SPIRIT CARAVAN), has scheduled the following dates:

Aug. 30 - The Ottobar - Baltimore, MD (w/ CHOWDER, FILTHY ROTTEN SEX MACHINE)
Aug. 31 - Bowery Ballroom (Royal Flush Release Party) - New York, NY (w/ CLUTCH, BEATALLICA)
Sep. 01 - The Brighton Bar - Long Branch, NJ (w/ SOLACE, BLACK IRISH, JOHN WILKES BOOTH)

THE HIDDEN HAND's latest full-length release, "The Resurrection of Whiskey Foote", came out in February. The CD is the third THE HIDDEN HAND full-length (second from Southern Lord) and features the lineup that recorded the now sold-out/out-of-print "Devoid of Color" EP from last year: Scott "Wino" Weinrich (guitars, vocals), Bruce Falkinburg (bass) and Evan Tanner (drums).

"The Resurrection of Whiskey Foote" is not necessarily a concept album but it is heavily layered with historical story-based lyricism and themse. Musically there is a subtle southern or classic rock vibe (ala killer slide playing from Wino and even some harp by Michael Anthony Miller) that creeps into the foundation of their brand of dark, heavy, progressive rock.

Obituary Frontman Discusses Illegal Downloading

Mark Carras of RockMyMonkey.com recently conducted an interview with OBITUARY vocalist John Tardy. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow:

Rock My Monkey: What do you think hurts the music industry more? Bad choices inspired by their paranoia, or actual downloading?

John Tardy: (laughs)

Rock My Monkey: And this is inspired by the promo of your album I was sent.

John Tardy: Yeah. Well, you know, it's tough. I mean, the downloading thing, it's just really brutal. To be honest with you, it hurts everybody in the industry. Last time around, one of Roadrunner's brilliant maneuvers, we gave them masters. I think like the same day they just started emailing MP3s to everybody in the company. And it was by the end of two days, three months before the album was out, it was just so available on the Internet, it was [like], why would anybody go and buy it when you could just get it so easily? This time around Candlelight did make an extensive attempt to hold back, keep it out of the wrong hands as long as they could. No MP3s were allowed at all. The promo copies that they did made up were somewhat protected for the most part. You couldn't just put them in the computer and copy them. But obviously people are going to find a way around everything. So I know it's out there on the internet now, and we're just under a month before the release date. But there's not much you can do about it. I just hope that people… if they want to see their bands stick around and continue, hopefully they'll go out and purchase a record if it's something they like.

Rock My Monkey: Do you think that it hurts the band at all to have a promo sent out that, for example, like the promo that I got, I have yet to hear the album because it won't play on any of the players in my house.

John Tardy: There's been a couple of people that say that. I just know, I have one of my vehicles that it does not play in, but it plays fine in another of my vehicles. And any regular player that I have it plays fine. Where it has the problem is what they tried to do is the whole MP3 thing, so if your stereo plays like MP3s, or you can plug your iPod into it, it may have a problem. But I just as soon have those handful of journalists have a problem listening to it, than it be so easy that they just get it, right click and copy, right click and paste, and email it to everybody that they want to. Even though that most people are going to find a way around it eventually, anyway. But to be honest with, chances are next time around we may not even send out any promo copies, just for the fact that there's this handful of journalists that are just not responsible with the music. They put it on the interest and they just don't realize how important it is to keep that, to keep it under wraps. You think someone would have a little bit more professionalism and listen to it and hang onto it for what it is, and let it get released and be a surprise to all the kids out there, as opposed to just being able to get it for free months before the album even comes out.

Rock My Monkey: Personally, that's one of my biggest pet peeves because, the people that are being dishonest and doing that kind of thing, they're only making the honest journalists' job more difficult, because they're inspiring record companies to do things like this.

John Tardy: It is a tough and ongoing problem. It's a cancer in the industry. And it's being felt from the bandmembers to literally record companies are going out of business because of this stuff. But like you said, we could mail out a thousand promo copies, and 999 of those people could be responsible with that music, and the one person that lets a friend borrow it, and they go and copy it and they put it on the Internet. You know how rampant it runs. As soon as it's out there, it just starts spreading like crazy. It's just a matter of a couple of days before it's just available to anybody. I don't really know how they're going to change that and get around it. It's just a little strange. We work hard to put our music and stuff together, and we get all excited. We just want to have that release date be something special. Where it's like, you know what, nobody has heard it, and hear it is, and I go out and get it and then everybody talks about it so it's a big surprise and everything. Nowadays it's like, the artwork, everybody has seen it, there's nothing surprise anymore. You've heard the album, you've seen the artwork. So by the time you go to the record store, there's no more surprise to anything. You know, it's like, I don't know. It's strange.

Rock My Monkey: Yeah, it's bad for everybody. I know that I do, I'm very, very hard on my writers to say don't you dare loan these out to anybody, nothing. Personally I wish more labels would actually go around the method of-there's a way you can put tracking stuff in the files where basically that's how you catch people uploading. Because when the record company or the band goes online, looks for the file on The Pirate Bay or whatever, and they see it, they download it, then all they do is they mouse over the thing, and it shows actually where, which CD the file came from. Then they can actually prosecute that person and get that person shut down and black ball them from the industry so they're not creating problems for everybody like that.

John Tardy: I really wish they could. I know in having our own studio and being able to work with ProTools and do that, I know I could make a copy of my record and put a series of clicks in there that you probably never even heard. But if I saw that music get out there, I'd be able to import it, open it up, and with a series of clicks that I could take notes and tell them that I know that on your CD that I gave you that every one of these songs has these little clicks, and I could identify it and say, "You know what, that is the copy I sent to you." But at the same time to try to prosecute somebody now, it may be kind of tough because they can simply say, "Well, how do I know you didn't give it to somebody else, and something happened," and blah, blah, blah. But it sure would be nice to come up with something. But in the world of the Internet it's just tough. Kids are going to have to realize the way they're going to feel it in their pockets is when people come on tour and their ticket prices and merchandise stuff are just going to be higher priced just because the amount of album sales that a lot of bands used to have are not there. It's just the lack of money that comes in from that has to be made up in another way, or it makes it impossible for bands just to even stay together and tour and do records, you know?

New Ministry Song Available To Download

After 27 years, 11 studio albums, four Grammy nominations, and plenty of pain, MINISTRY mastermind and industrial metal pioneer Al Jourgensen will lay his longtime band to rest. Indeed, September 18's "The Last Sucker" will be MINISTRY's final all-new studio release and will be followed by a 2008 farewell tour, and plenty of free time for Jourgensen to devote himself to expanding his borderland compound, 13th Planet Records.

"I've got a lot of side-projects and new projects I want to focus on," explained Jourgensen. "We have our our own label, 13th Planet Records, we're building, and I want to sign, produce and collaborate with other artists. Being in the studio writing, recording and collaborating is my favorite part of this snake-oil industry. I'd rather be behind the console than behind the mic. Plus, I kinda like the synchronicity of Dubya and MINISTRY riding off into the sunset hand in hand."

"The Last Sucker" is the third in an unrelenting and uber-critical trilogy aimed at exposing the foils, failures and fabrications perpetrated by the George W. Bush administration. The CD, which follows 2004's "Houses of the Molé" and last year's "Rio Grande Blood", is the final nail in the Dubya coffin. The album was produced and recorded by Jourgensen himself at his 13th Planet compound in El Paso, TX, with musicians Thomas Victor (PRONG) on guitars, Paul Raven (KILLING JOKE, PRONG) on bass and guitarist Sin Quirin (THE REVOLTING COCKS). In addition, Burton C. Bell (FEAR FACTORY) makes a vocal appearance on "Die In A Crash", as well as the album's final two songs, "End of Days" parts One and Two.
