Nikki Sixx To Speak At Capitol Hill Event

Mötley Crüe founding member Nikki Sixx whose brutally honest upcoming book The Heroin Diaries: A Year in the Life of a Shattered Rock Star (due September 18th from MTV Pocket Books/Simon & Schuster) chronicles his battles with drug addiction and his road to recovery, will be a featured speaker at the 18th Annual National Alcohol and Drug Addiction Recovery Month luncheon on Capitol Hill, Thursday, September 6th. Sixx is the first member of the rock world to share his story of surviving addiction at such an event – a particularly ironic distinction since he was once viewed as one of the most wild and excessive men in rock.

Sixx was invited by NAADAC, the Association for Addiction Professionals, to share his compelling story at this national forum alongside Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) Administrator Terry Cline Ph.D., and Center for Substance Abuse Treatment Director H. Westley Clark M.D., J.D.

Sixx hopes The Heroin Diaries book, and accompanying CD, The Heroin Diaries Soundtrack, (released August 21st via Eleven Seven Music) will offer an insight into, and hopefully steer people clear of, the perils and dangers of substance abuse. The Heroin Diaries Soundtrack was written and produced by Sixx: A.M. (Sixx, James Michael and DJ Ashba), and was inspired by the dark and crippling diary entries that later became The Heroin Diaries book. Though the album was not created with the intention of being a radio record, the lead single, "Life Is Beautiful" is already in the top 20 on the rock radio charts.

Twenty-five percent of the book’s profits will be donated to Running Wild In The Night – Sixx’s fundraising initiative for Covenant House California, which helps keep runaway, abused and abandoned youth off the streets.

Korn Ask Fans To Help Pick Next Single

The Pulse of Radio (formerly Launch Radio Networks) reports: KORN is asking fans to help pick the next single from the band's recently released, untitled eighth studio effort. A post at the official KORN web site reads, "Now that the album is out, KORN wants YOUR input on which song you like more...VOTE NOW on the message boards for your favorite of these three tracks!" The songs listed are "Innocent Bystander", "Bitch We Have A Problem" and "Hold On".

Singer Jonathan Davis told The Pulse of Radio that "Hold On" is an especially personal track for him and was one of several inspired by the blood infection that nearly killed him last year. "'Hold On's another one about the blood thing," he said. "It was like a song of empowerment. It's for people out there dealing with any kind of disease or f***ed-up relationship or anything. It's about just hanging in there. I wanted to write a song that people could listen to it and it would give 'em hope."

KORN's latest album arrived on July 31 and debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard album chart.

The band is currently headlining the Family Values tour, which stops Wednesday night (August 29) in Bakersfield, California and wraps up this weekend.

KORN will head out on a fall North American tour with HELLYEAH, FIVE FINGER DEATH PUNCH and DROID, which begins on September 22 in Reno, Nevada.

Lordi Frontman Defends "Free" Ozzfest

LORDI mainman Mr. Lordi recently spoke to Jonathan Cunningham of Broward-Palm Beach, Florida's New Times about the Finnish band's participation in this year's Ozzfest, which has been dubbed "Freefest" due to the fact that concert revelers are able to enjoy the show without having to pay.

"We are not getting paid," Mr. Lordi said. "But there's no income. How can you pay the bands if there aren't any ticket sales? It's pretty simple. This is really a promotion for us. You have to take it like starting from scratch. But we're really lucky bastards. It's not like starting from scratch; we play in front of thousands of people every other day, so it's like starting from third or fourth."

On whether he thought more tours should be free, Mr. Lordi said, "I think that question should be targeted to the audience, to the people who are showing up all summer, not me," he said. "Nobody wants to pay for it, if you give them a choice. And maybe there are people who don't have money for it and now they get a chance to see a great show. But on our side, there's nobody getting paid. It's like charity work in a way. We're getting something back from it by way of promotion. And the fans are getting the bands that they like for free. Nobody loses."

Slash Talks About New Autobiography

29, 2007

VELVET REVOLVER and former GUNS N' ROSES guitarist Slash spoke to E! Online about his upcoming autobiography. He said we could expect a bunch of stuff about his years with GUNS 'N' ROSES, but not necessarily because he was feeling nostalgic on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of "Appetite for Destruction".

"I never wanted to write a book, because it would be too final," Slash explained. "The only reason I wrote it is because a lot of the stuff I was reading and seeing about the band got pretty frustrating. I just had to straighten out some shit."

The book is co-authored by former Rolling Stone contributor Anthony Bozza, who also helped Tommy Lee on his tell-all tome, "Tommyland".

"It almost reads like a journal, except for the fact that I never wrote anything down," Slash said. "It was a hard book to make, because I was pretty fucked up from 1980 to 2000-something. I really had to dig deep to try and remember a lot of shit."

Slash added that the book is now being edited and will hopefully be out before the end of the year. He told Glam-Metal.com that the book has "some funny shit in it. It's not really a book that I'm out attacking anybody or venting all my grievances."

Slash told The Pulse of Radio that for him and the other members of VELVET REVOLVER, making music has always been a central focus of their lives. "I think the most important thing is, from wherever it is that we come from back when we were kids, when we first got inspired to be musicians and we were huge rock fans, and the whole nine yards, that's never left us," he said. "So we never got jaded in the sense that — the business might have had some certain effect on us over the years, but as far as where our roots are, and what drives us to stay in and keep doing what we're doing, that's never changed."

VELVET REVOLVER released its second album, "Libertad", on July 3. The latest single from the set is called "The Last Fight".

Sacred Reich Pull Out Of D-Low Memorial Show

Reunited Arizona thrashers SACRED REICH have cancelled their appearance at the 11th annual D-Low Memorial concert, set to take place August 31 at the Marquee Theatre in Tempe, Arizona. "Wiley [Arnett, guitar] wrecked his dirt bike while out riding and broke a few ribs," explained bassist/vocalist Phil Rind. "He's doing well but is unable to perform this weekend.

"We apologize to anyone looking forward to seeing us play, and we are disappointed that we will not be part of the show. We were happy to have the opportunity to pay our musical respects to Dana. Hopefully we can be part of next year's bill and play a full set for Dana."

The D-Low show is held every year in memory of SOULFLY mainman Max Cavalera's stepson Dana "D-Low" Wells who was killed in a 1996 car wreck. It is SOULFLY's biggest show of the year and draws fans from all over the United States. In 2004, SOULFLY filmed portions of its "The Song Remains Insane" DVD at the event.

Metal Blade Records released a three-disc deluxe reissue of SACRED REICH's "Ignorance" and "Surf Nicaragua" on June 15 (Germany, Austria, Switzerland) and June 18 (rest of Europe). Two CDs are included in the package (both remastered!) as well as a bonus DVD. The package includes liner notes by Rind and Malcom Dome (Classic Rock, Metal Hammer, Total Rock Radio) and an extensive booklet with loads of previously unpublished photos.

CBGB's Founder Dead At 75

MTV.com reports that Hilly Kristal, the founder of legendary New York punk rock venue CBGB, died on Tuesday from complications from lung cancer at the age of 75.

Kristal, who opened the now-defunct venue in 1973 in the then-gritty Bowery neighborhood in Manhattan, is credited with helping to launch the mid-'70s punk revolution with his championing of bands such as the RAMONES, BLONDIE, TALKING HEADS, TELEVISION and PATTI SMITH. Following a final show in October of 2006, Kristal had discussed plans to take the venue to Las Vegas.

Nu- metal pioneers Korn filmed a small concert at the venue and released it as a bonus DVD as part of their greatest hits package.

CBGB, which opened in December 1973, was officially called CBGB & OMFUG, which stood for "Country, Bluegrass, Blues and Other Music for Uplifting Gormandizers."

Emo Fans Angry Over Machine Head Award Win

MACHINE HEAD's official web site has been updated with the following message:

"MACHINE HEAD's 'Best Album' win at last Thursday's Kerrang! Awards over pop-rock powerhouses MY CHEMICAL ROMANCE and FALL OUT BOY has apparently cut deep with fans of both bands, prompting a flood of angry whining and sad-faced emoticons on the Kerrang! message boards. MACHINE HEAD's upset victory over the multi-platinum softcore acts sent their inherently sensitive fans into an emotional frenzy, building into a tizzy of unparalleled proportions. Wrought with dismay, polished fingernails the world over lashed out at the band and metal as a whole with diatribes the likes of 'MCR really should have won!!! I'm mad now!!!!' 'What a load of shit, who the fuck listens to them?' and "Stupid MACHINE HEAD!!' at times stooping so low as to say the competition was fixed, and often gravely endangering the integrity of their carefully sideswept hair with posts like 'I H8 METAL, I H8 METAL, I H8 METAL, I H8 METAL, I H8 METAL, I H8 METAL, I H8 METAL.'

"Not surprisingly, MACHINE HEAD fans responded en masse to the tirades, lashing back in defense of the band and the undisputed quality of the album, citing critical praise, technicality, songwriting and fan response to 2007's 'The Blackening', as well as the band's influence on and history within their genre, with the occasional 'MACHINE HEAD piss all over anything MCR have ever done" thrown in for good measure.

"To much less Internet-based commotion, the band also took home the 'Hard Rock Hero' award, netting them two Kerrang! awards for the first time since 'Burn My Eyes' where they received 'Best International Band' and 'Best Video' for 'Davidian'."

Heaven And Hell Drummer Talks About Live CD/DVD

Glam-Metal.com has issued the following report from Deb Rao:

"August 28th (marked) the release of the new HEAVEN AND HELL DVD and CD, Heaven And Hell: Live From Radio City Music Hall, on Rhino Records. Also today (August 29th), Heaven And Hell hold a special in-store appearance at 6 PM at Hot Topic on Hollywood Blvd, in Hollywood, CA in honor of the release of the first DVD and CD in fifteen years from the band.

Heaven And Hell will tour Mexico, August 29 - September 1st. On September 5th, in Binghamton, NY at the Broome County Arena, Heaven And Hell will kick off a World Tour with ALICE COOPER and QUEENSRŸCHE."

Deb Rao spoke to Heaven And Hell drummer Vinny Appice prior to the in-store signing and discussed the unveiling of Heaven And Hell: Live From Radio City Music Hall. The following is an excerpt from Deb's chat with Vinny:

Q: Now, this is the first concert of the band in fifteen years. How exciting was it to be part of this musical history?

A: "Yes, this is the first anything in fifteen years. First tour, first DVD, first CD. So it is pretty exciting. Tonight, we are doing an in-store in Hollywood, at Hot Topic signing the DVD for 3 hours, so that should be crazy."

Q: Now, I got to see the New York concert last night on VH1. They were playing Live From Radio City Music Hall. It looks like it came out really well. Tell me a little bit about the production of the DVD. Was it hard to shoot all o fthe different angles on this tour because it was so theatrical? Also, I heard a lot about the issues regarding the New York City Union.

A: "At Radio City there was a lot of confusion because, there was a lot of stuff going on. Because first of all, it is New York. You got a lot of friends coming down, and people in the business and you are recording a DVD, so it was really crazy. We had problems doing a soundcheck because everything ran late. Then, when we did a soundcheck, we had to stop. We didn't even play one song because the Union Break came up. In New York, the Union Break is like God. So, we had to stop. (Laughter) So it was a little nerve racking. But, we can only do half a song, and hopefully that was OK for everybody who was doing a little recording and camera work. We would have liked to have done more. If we could. So, it was a lot of nerves rattling here and there. But, we thought it came out really, really good. When, we sort of finished the product with all of the editing, it looks fanstastic."

Koch To Re-Release God Forbid Classics As CD

KOCH Records has announced the release of "Sickness and Misery," a new CD featuring two classic albums by the fore runners of the New Wave of American Heavy Metal, God Forbid, on November 6th, 2007. "Sickness and Misery" will contain both the band’s first EP, the out of print "Out of Misery," and the band’s first full-length album, “Reject the Sickness,” combined together into one package.

Neither body of work has received the proper treatment it deserves until now as KOCH, in conjunction with the band, put the two releases on one CD and rename it Sickness and Misery. Featuring 16 tracks of sonic brutality these are the tracks that got the band signed these are the classic tracks that first put God Forbid on the map.

God Forbid’s Doc Coyle says “All in God Forbid are very excited to re-release these albums. It's an honor to be involved with a renowned label such as KOCH. Although 'Reject the Sickness' and 'Out of Misery' have been released in other modest formats, this is the first proper release with full distribution. I think RTS is a classic in the metalcore genre, that never really had its due, and OOM really gives true God Forbid fans a raw look at the foundation where the band was birthed. Having both releases on the same CD is a great idea! More bang for the buck! This is also the first time either album will see light of day in Europe. For all those who've been bitching about the rarity of these albums, please enjoy!”

KOCH Records’ VP of Metal Scott Givens adds, “We at KOCH are thrilled to have the opportunity to work with God Forbid and to give these classic releases the exposure they have so long deserved.”

Ted Nugent Told To Tone It Down For Fair Show

Detroit Free Press reports that a South Dakota state fair official asked Ted Nugent to tone things down for an show at the S.D. State Fair on Sunday, after a video surfaced of the outspoken rocker slamming Democratic presidential candiates Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton and Sen. Barack Obama.

Susan Hayward, who manages the fair, told KSFY-TV in Sioux Falls that officials contacted Nugent's representatives yesterday and reminded them that the fair is a family-oriented event.

"They were very courteous in responding immediately in assuring us that that's exactly what we would have," Hayward says.

Video footage of Ted Nugent having a few choice words for Clinton and Obama during a recent concert has surfaced. With machine guns in his hands, a camouflaged Nugent yelled, "Obama, he's a piece of shit, and I told him to suck on my machine gun. ... And then I was in New York. I said, 'Hey Hillary, you might want to ride one of these into the sunset.' " He also went off on Democratic Senator Barbara Boxer before saying, "Any questions?" and shouting, "Freedom!"

Nugent has been an outspoken advocate of the second amendment (the right to bear arms) and pro-hunting issues.

Nugent also openly takes an anti-drugs and alcohol stance, which he reportedly has followed during his career, unlike many other rock musicians.

In addition to his music career, Nugent has starred in his own television reality shows, "Surviving Nugent" (2003, VH1) and "Wanted: Ted or Alive" (2005, OLN).

Necrophobic Cancel European Tour

Swedish death metallers NECROPHOBIC have issued the following update:

"We are really sorry to announce that the whole European tour with DISMEMBER has been canceled by the promoter.

"When the bad news came to us (only seven days before the first date) we were as shocked as you probably are right now. Both DISMEMBER and us have tried to come up with different solutions to make this tour happen anyway, but the promoter has not been cooperative at all. We've been preparing and looking forward to this for months and we even have t-shirts waiting for us in Vienna by now. He didn't give us any sign whatsoever about his plans, and he never gave us a full good reason either.

"This whole mess will not break us though. We promise to make this up to you as soon as possible. To come and raise some hell together with you, in your city, in very near future.

"The metal family never dies!"

NECROPHOBIC's latest album, "Hrimthursum", is available through Germany's War Anthem Records on special gatefold vinyl LP with a poster.

The follow-up to 2002's "Bloodhymns", "Hrimthursum" was recorded at the House of Voodoo Studio with engineers Anders Bentell and Fredrik Folkare (guitarist and producer of UNLEASHED) and was mastered at Tailor Maid Production in Stockholm with Peter In de Betou.

Chthonic To Hold N.Y.Concert Prior To U.N. Kickoff

Taiwanese band ChthoniC — who will complete their stint as the first-ever Asian extreme metal act to tour with Ozzfest this week — will continue their historic "UNlimited" tour next month, when they will perform their first headlining concerts in America.

"Ozzfest has been a great experience for ChthoniC, but we're excited to perform for our fans for longer than 20 minutes," says vocalist Freddy Lin.

In concert, ChthoniC (pronounced "THON-ick") will continue to perform the tour's theme song, "UNlimited Taiwan," written and recorded this spring "to emphasize the 'UNlimited' potential of Taiwan and the Taiwanese people," Lim says. Like the tour — which kicked off in Taipei earlier this summer following the international re-release of 2002's "Relentless Recurrence" and last year's "A Decade On The Throne" two-CD/DVD live set — the song was named to protest how the United Nations (UN) limits Taiwan's full participation as an independent country. The Washington Post and the International Herald Tribune, among others, have recently devoted lengthy features to the message behind the tour.

With a new session of the United Nations General Assembly scheduled to open in New York on Sept. 18, many pro-Taiwan rallies will be held around the city in the days beforehand. To coincide with the UN session's kickoff — where Taiwan will once again petition to be formally recognized as an independent country, and not a Chinese province — ChthoniC will hold a special "UNlimited New York" concert at Manhattan's Highline Ballroom, located less than three miles from the UN, on Sept. 16. Tickets are currently available on the venue's website, www.highlineballroom.com, and at their box office.

Because this is the group's third New York City concert in recent weeks, coming on the heels of an Aug. 21 performance with Nile and a Sept. 6 concert alongside Katatonia, ChthoniC has arranged for the Highline Ballroom to offer tickets for only $5 to anyone who redeems a ticket stub from one of their previous shows at the venue's box office. For everyone else, a $2 discount can be obtained by purchasing the tickets online at www.highlineballroom.com (enter "un4taiwan" in the access code field). Furthermore, the first 100 fans in the doors will receive a free set of ChthoniC "paper dolls," which are sold in toy stores throughout Asia. A photo can be seen here

The "UNlimited New York" concert will be videotaped, and ChthoniC hopes that people of all nationalities will join them in this historic plea for freedom and independence.

Intronaut Replaces Guitarist/Vocalist

Intronaut has announced the departure of guitarist/vocalist Leon del Muerte, who has left the group to focus on resurrecting his Murder Construct project, in addition to bass duties for Phobia. Taking his spot in Intronaut is Dave Timnick. According to the band, "Dave is a very talented and proficient musician, we're stoked. In addition to being a great guitar player, he is also a skilled percussionist and has studied tabla with Aloke Dutta. We can't wait to get things going with this revamped lineup!"

Meanwhile, del Muerte has the following to say:

"I had a lot of fun playing and learning new things with Intronaut and got to tour with some great bands and made a lot of new friends. Ultimately, I feel I've just strayed too far from my roots and could not hold back the other members of the band with my single-minded desire to grind. Peace, bitches!"
