Hellfest Cancelled Due To Insurance Issues

Scott Frost of The Trentonian has published an in-depth report on the circumstances surrounding the cancellation of Hellfest 2005, the three-day festival of hardcore heavy metal and punk bands that was set for Aug. 19-21 at the Sovereign Bank Arena in Trenton, New Jersey.

Officials with Sovereign Bank Area announced the cancellation yesterday afternoon, saying promoters didn’t have the proper insurance policy to cover an event of such magnitude.

Hellfest was scheduled to have PUBLIC ENEMY, HATEBREED and KILLSWITCH ENGAGE headlining the event along with over 180 other punk, hardcore, hip hop and metal groups coming from all over the United States, Canada and Japan.

Fans, who spent up to $120 for a three-day pass to the event, will receive a full refund at the point of purchase beginning tomorrow.

Promoters said 500 tickets were sold overseas, to fans as far away as Australia, and officials with Trenton’s downtown Marriott said the hotel had been sold out for two weeks.

The Lafayette Yard hotel even altered its restaurant's menu to accommodate a large straightedge and vegan fanbase that follow the bands set to perform.

"It was going to be a great event and it had a lot of potential," the arena's general manager Eric Cuthbertson said yesterday. "Unfortunately, the event promoters failed to comply with the contractible obligation of the arena’s lease agreement.

"They failed to meet schedules and deadlines which forced us into a corner where we had to cancel the event."

Promoters and arena officials met in May to iron out the details and sign the contract.

The SBA rents the space and requires promoters to supply a security and insurance plan.

Hellfest organizers had 30 days to provide the proper insurance policy to handle a large-scale rock concert in the city, but the insurance supplied was "not the insurance that we needed," Cuthbertson said.

Arena management refused to elaborate on the insurance policy issues, but Hellfest promoters said they were covered.

Nickelback to Use Unreleased Dimebag Solo

Jon Wiederhorn of MTV.com is reporting that a previously unreleased solo by late PANTERA and DAMAGEPLAN guitarist Dimebag Darrell will appear this fall in an unlikely place: on NICKELBACK's new album, "All the Right Reasons". The guitar parts for the flailing, 24-second lead were donated by Darrell's brother, drummer Vinnie Paul, and assembled from outtakes from the PANTERA albums "Vulgar Display of Power" and "Far Beyond Driven".

The song, a tribute to Darrell titled "Side of a Bullet", was written three months after the guitarist was killed while performing onstage with DAMAGEPLAN in Columbus, Ohio. NICKELBACK mainman Chad Kroeger first penned the song's aggressive, metallic riff, then wrote call-and-response lyrics from the perspective of a PANTERA fan so enraged over Dimebag's murder that he vows revenge, not realizing the shooter had already been killed by a policeman.

"I was very upset, and for two months, if I saw his picture somewhere I would get angry," Kroeger told MTV.com. "I hadn't lost somebody to a shooting before — it wasn't as though he'd been killed in some sort of accident. He was taken in such a horrible, malicious way that just made it more painful."

Once Kroeger finished demoing "Side of a Bullet", he called up Paul and played it to him to get his take on the tune. Paul liked what he heard and urged Kroeger to write lyrics about Dime. "I said, 'Well, funny enough, that song is about your brother,' " Kroeger recalled.

Paul volunteered to play on the song, so Kroeger overnighted him the tape and encouraged him to record a new drum track over the one played by NICKELBACK drummer Daniel Adair. "He thought about it for a while," Kroeger said, "then he decided that Daniel had done such an amazing job that we should leave it the way it was. That's when he sent the guitar parts from 'Vulgar Display of Power' and 'Far Beyond Driven', which we used for the solo."

Ozzy Osbourne Talks About Guitarist Search

BLACK SABBATH frontman Ozzy Osbourne announced earlier in the week that he is searching for a guitar player to collaborate with on his next solo album.

Even though he's made records with guitar legends including Tony Iommi, the late Randy Rhoads, Jake E. Lee, and Zakk Wylde, Osbourne told Launch Radio Networks that he doesn't go looking for the flashiest player he can find. "When I audition guitar players, I go, 'I don't want to know how fast you can play, I don't want to know if you can stand on your head and play it through your butt, or whatever — just give me a riff that'll make a kid want to go out and buy a guitar,'" Ozzy said. "Simple, but effective — how (much) more simple can you get than (the KINKS song) 'You Really Got Me'? Just go (sings opening guitar part)."

No time frame has been announced for Osbourne to make a new album, and there's conflicting information about when it might happen. An official statement says that Osbourne and his wife and manager Sharon are either planning a BLACK SABBATH tour of Canada for early 2006, while the British tabloid The Sun quotes Sharon as saying the couple is getting ready for a two-year break from the music business, during which they'll spend some time in New Zealand.

Chris Poland's OHM Finish Second Record

Megadeth lead-guitarist, Chris Poland and his band OHM: have just finished up their second record on the Rotten Records subsidiary, Blacknote Records. Recorded at the bands Glass House Studios, with tenured co-producer Petar Sardelich, this record promises to be the most innovative and staggering work that Chris has ever laid onto tape. Chris says, "This record is more like you would hear OHM: live, we just let the machines roll and we played…" A release date of Tues. October 18th has been set for this record.

All Members of Blood Freak Killed in Car Accident

The following message was posted on the Razorback Records website:

"It is a very, very sad day for Razorback Records and the whole Horror Hive. We received a call today from Jason Grinter's wife, Martha, that Jason and the rest of BLOOD FREAK died in a horrible car accident sometime over the weekend. They had left Anaheim, BLOOD FREAK's hometown, on Friday morning and were driving to Seattle so they could begin recording their long-awaited second album, "Live Fast, Die Young, & Leave a Flesh-Eating Corpse," this week. The album was to have been the second released by Razorback Records. Jason and the boys were about to head into Portland when something went wrong and their rented van veered off the road. Tragically, all three passengers were killed in the crash. Exactly what went "wrong" with BLOOD FREAK's van isn't known yet. We hope to have more details soon. What we do know is that Razorback Records and the Horror Hive mourns the deaths of our fellow gore-hounds in BLOOD FREAK, a band that rose out of the obscurity of the '80s/early '90s death metal/goregrind underground only to be lost before its time ...

Hatebreed, Crowbar Side Project Set Album Title

Hatebreed frontman Jamey Jasta and Crowbar guitarist/vocalist Kirk Windstein have set "Kingdom of Sorrow" as the name of their collaborative project. The group's debut album, which is currently being recorded at at Planet Z studios in Massachusetts with producer Zeuss (Hatebreed, Shadows Fall) is "almost complete and it is the most pummeling slab of metal we've ever been a part of," says Jasta. "This is seriously going to blow people's minds! We have recorded 13 tracks plus a cover of Motorhead's "No Class". Steve Gibb from Crowbar (formerly of Black Label Society) has just flown up from Miami to rip some solos and leads on a few tracks. We are also going to have two INSANE guest appearances that will definitely shock and excite people. . . Kirk is singing with me as well as playing the bass and guitar on the album, and we have both been writing and bringing ideas to the table. It's been killer!"

Slipknot Threatens To Sue Mock BK Metal Band

The Smoking Gun reports:

Claiming that its image and persona have been hijacked as part of a marketing campaign for Burger King's new chicken fries, the costumed heavy metal band Slipknot is threatening the fast food giant with legal action. In the below August 4 letter, the band's lawyers charge that Coq Roq--a mock metal band featured in new Burger King commercials--was created as a "look-alike, sound alike 'band' in order to influence the Slipknot generation to purchase Chicken Fries." Counsel for the band notes that Coq Roq--whose masked members are supposed to resemble badass chickens--has blatantly copied several of Slipknot's signature masks, including a gas mask, a kabuki-style face covering, and a mask with dreadlocks attached. Coq Roq's lead guitarist, The Talisman. Details of Slipknot's beef with Burger King surfaced in connection with an August 12 federal court filing made by the fast food company and its advertising firm. Burger King wants a U.S. District Court judge in Miami to issue a "declaratory judgment" that the Coq Roq campaign does not infringe on Slipknot's publicity and trademark rights. As for the similar masks, Burger King lawyers--who apparently read the metal mag Revolver--note that many groups "wear masks and/or make-up to accomplish a mask-like effect, including but not limited to the bands KISS, Gwar, Insane Clown Posse, Mushroomhead, Mudvayne, Marilyn Manson, Los Straitjackets, and the Spits."
