Breaking News
Ozzy Osbourne Retires As Ozzfest Headliner
It's been rumored for months that this summer's Ozzfest would be its namesake's last — and on Friday, Ozzy Osbourne announced that he is retiring as the headliner of the annual heavy metal festival. However, the singer is expected to finish this summer's tour and plans to make occasional appearances at future Ozzfests.
"After 10 years, the Ozzfest's name and reputation have been established," he said in a statement. "It's time for me to move on and do other things." His publicist noted in a statement, "Ozzfest will carry on in 2006, however Ozzy will limit his performances to only a few, select cities."
Ozzy, who's been performing with Black Sabbath this summer as the tour's headliner, has been dogged by throat problems, which have forced the band to drop off of the bill on several recent dates, with Black Sabbath cancelling three Ozzfest appearances so far this year (July 27 in Holmdel, New Jersey, July 31 in Noblesville, Indiana and August 2 in Columbus, Ohio).
No official explanation has been given for Ozzy's throat problems, and it is unknown how severe they may be.

Dan Swano Re-Opens Unisound Recordins Studio
Multi-talented Swedish producer/musician Dan Swanö has announced plans to re-open his legendary Unisound Recordings studio.
Commented Swanö: "THE LEGEND IS BACK!!!!! (I always wanted to write that!!!)
"I have decided to re-open the gates to Unisound Recordings (where I recorded bands like OPETH, KATATONIA, MARDUK, DISSECTION, MILLENCOLIN, EDGE OF SANITY and many, many more.).
"This time things will be a little different though. I am not planning to build a big studio with tons of expensive gear. My primary goal will be to mix stuff...albums, songs, the sound for a DVD release etc. I will also do remixes and such.
"Since one year [ago] I have mixed albums after work, and the clients have been so pleased with the result that I am beginning to wonder if I shouldn't do this full-time again!! So, before I quit my dayjob, I just wanted to see if someone's still interested to work with me??? Let me know at dan@swano.com.
"For reference, you can contact the guys from NOVEMBERS DOOM, EDENS FALL, THIS HAVEN and THE PROJECT HATE. I have also done remixes for PAIN and, of course, my own stuff like the yet-to-be-officially-released 'Nightfall Overture' album with NIGHTINGALE and I am also working with my magnum opus SECOND SKY...
"So how do I work??
"The albums from NOVEMBERS DOOM and EDENS FALL were recorded in America. The files were sent to me on DVDs and along with a rough-mix and a reference CD (a CD from another artist you wish to have a similar sound to), I mix a track and upload as high-res MP3 to my server...you download and listen in your own hi-fis, cars, etc. and all members join up and make of list of changes. We discuss overall changes like 'The bass is too loud, the vocals needs to cut through more etc.' and also specific changes. The changes are suggested on a timeline like 01:22 'Toms too loud,' 02:32 'Acoustic Guitars lower,' etc., and after a few rounds, the album is mixed and PERFECT!! I have 100% total recall of all the gear in my mix-suite, so it´s only the details you wish to change that change… the rest of the mix remains EXACTLY the same. No matter how cool the studio monitors sound, we all want to hear what it sounds like in our own stereos before we get the feeling that 'It's ready!!' Just imagine to be able to listen to the mix in your own stereos and be able to change the details… and have them corrected within hours!! And once you cannot find any strange levels... that's when the album is ready!!! No more annoying surprises when it's too late!!!!
"I will be available from October and onwards."
Down Drummer Says There Will Be A New Studio Album
In a recent interview with Metal Maniacs magazine, EYEHATEGOD/SUPERJOINT RITUAL guitarist and DOWN drummer Jimmy Bower revealed that he is "sure we'll do another DOWN record. I've talked to Phil [Anselmo, DOWN/SUPERJOINT RITUAL/ex-PANTERA frontman] and everybody else. Everybody's expressed interest in wanting to do a DOWN record, so that's basically all it takes. Hopefully within the next year or two that can happen. DOWN records are fun. Phil's doing a lot better as far as handling [Dimebag's death]. It's been a big wake-up call for a lot of people over the the last five, six months. People are doing cool things with their lives; cool, positive things. Let's save metal!"
DOWN is the New Orleans "supergroup" featuring Anselmo, Bower, Pepper Keenan (guitars, C.O.C.), Rex Brown (bass, ex-PANTERA) and Kirk Windstein (guitars, CROWBAR). The band's sophomore album, "Down II", was released in March 2002 on Elektra Records.

Ozzy Blows Out Voice, Storms Off Stage In Auburn
Ernest A. Jasmin of The News Tribune reviewed this year's Ozzfest when it hit the White River Amphitheatre in Auburn, Washington on Thursday (August 11). An excerpt from his review follows:
"For the second year in a row, the concert’s namesake, Ozzy Osbourne, was joined by BLACK SABBATH band mates Geezer Butler (bass), Tony Iommi (guitar) and Bill Ward (drums). And Ozzfest nearly lost its namesake again, two years after Osbourne called in sick to the tour's local stop in 2003.
"All seemed to be going well early on as SABBATH kicked off with 'N.I.B.', 'After Forever' and proto-metal classic 'War Pigs'. Then things went wrong when the band tackled 'Dirty Women'.
"Osbourne's voice cracked hideously during that number, and he responded by slamming his mike down and storming off stage.
"The rest of SABBATH remained cool and professional, continuing to jam until Ozzy could pull it together and return. The singer forced a grin that looked more like grimace as he lead the crowd in waving their hands side to side.
"He explained himself once the number had ended. 'My voice is … blown out again,' he said, promising to go on if the crowd wanted to hear him.
"But this was Ozzy, after all — metal's patron saint. And while hundreds could be seen headed for the parking lot, most in the crowd remained faithful and even turned their cheers up a notch.
"'Iron Man' and 'Black Sabbath' were set highlights, as fans sang exuberantly along with the former and Ozzy's maniacal expression was captured by the giant movie screen behind him during the latter."
