Downe Talks About the Future of Faster Pussycat
Faster Pussycat is currently rolling through town across the US with Bang Tango and L.A. Guns. Jason Price and Steve Johnson of Live-Metal.Net recently spoke to Taime Downe about his beginnings, his current undertakings, and what exactly might lie in store for Faster Pussycat. In a candid interview, Downe talks about new material for the band, a possible autobiography, the possibility of "Rock of Love: Taime Downe"... and even Chinese Democracy. Here are some excerpts:
On Producing:
Live-Metal.Net: You produced the last record, "The Power and The Glory Hole", are you looking to do more producing in the future?
Taime Downe: Yeah! I don't plan on dancing around like a fuckin' monkey man forever, like I said, I'm getting old. [laughs] But I still love music too. I still love playing, so that isn't the case right now but I definitely want to get into doing some work with other bands. I like being in the studio and recording. I like making stuff sound phat as shit in the studio because it's fun when you get something slammin'. It is definitely something that I will be getting more involved with, producing other bands.. Whether it's a track or a whole record.
On the possibility of a Reality Series:
Live-Metal.Net: You're a Hollywood guy, a celebrity with a unique flair and there is this whole "80's Glam Rock Revival" for lack of a better term, going on right now. Have you ever been approached to participate in a reality series?
Taime Downe: I have been approached a couple times before regarding Faster, but I was like "nnnaaaahhhhhhh." I would prefer just to watch them. When I need to be made into an idiot, I'll do it myself. I don't really need anyone to help.

Society 1 Announces New Guitarist
After trying out guitarists for several months, Society 1 has just announced they have found a new guitarist. Los Angeles native Eric Franklin will be joining Matt "The Lord" Zane, Dirt, and Sic Rik on guitars. You can view video of Eric Franklin in action at Ultimate-Guitar.com.
Raised by his parents on Beethoven, Bach and the Star Wars Soundtrack, guitarist Eric Franklin started his musical journey on the piano at age six. Taught by Juilliard graduate Emilia Guastella, Eric studied classical music for 6 years. By the age of 12 however, hearing the sounds of Black Sabbath, Van Halen, Guns N’ Roses and Led Zeppelin blast from his sister’s stereo, Eric eventually craved to learn music of a louder persuasion and his longing to play the guitar could not be stopped.
Eric’s first public show will be on Dave Navarro’s Spread Entertainment which will air Aug 8 on maniatv.com. Society 1 recently released “Live and Raw” exclusively through iTunes.
As previously reported, Society 1 has been in the studio this summer recording its fifth studio album due out in 2009 at NRG Studio's with producer Wade Norton.

Metal Stars Confirmed For Dimebag Tribute
The Ozzfest live tribute to fallen Pantera/ Damageplan guitarist "Dimebag" Darrell Abbott has began to take a clearer shape with many big name members of the metal community confirmed. The musicians will perform a set of Pantera classics after the set of Hellyeah at Ozzfest. Among the confirmed artists are:
Vinnie Paul (Pantera, Damageplan, Hellyeah)
Kerry King (Slayer)
Scott Ian (Anthrax)
Charlie Benante (Anthrax)
Mike Inez (Alice In Chains)
Jerry Cantrell (Alice In Chains)
King Diamond (Mercyful Fate, Solo artist)
Kirk Hammett (Metallica)
Chad Gray (Mudvayne, Hellyeah)
Jamey Jasta (Hatebreed, Icepick, Kingdom Of Sorrow)
Bob Zilla (Damageplan, Hellyeah)
Dimebag's former girlfriend Rita Haney has said about the tribute: “To have this event on the Mainstage at OZZFest in Dallas is such a treat and an honor!” says Rita Haney. “When this tragedy originally happened, I saw the music community come together like I've never seen before. To have the name ‘Dimebag’ still, to this day, unite musicians to pay homage in such a respectful way, is very overwhelming! In Dime's vision, it's always been about a damn good time!"
“When we decided on Dallas as the site for this year’s OZZFest, it seemed like the perfect opportunity to pay tribute to ‘Dimebag’ Darrell since it was his hometown,” said Sharon Osbourne. “’Dimebag’ was a part of our OZZFest family and everyone in the metal community misses him dearly.”
Twisted Sister To Release Live DVD This Fall
Twisted Sister guitarist Jay Jay French has posted the following update on the bands forthcoming live DVD:
"Recorded in London, in August 2004, the critics hailed Twisted Sister's performance as one of their greatest ever. If you're an SMF, and have wondered what Twisted Sister thought about any of their live shows throughout their 35 year history, you should know this: while certain band members remember certain shows, and relate tales of particular performances as being their favourite, rarely does the band universally agree that any particular show is about as good as it gets. I can say this without hesitation or ambiguity: each band member considered that night to be amongst the most special of our careers. This concert was filmed and kept in a vault for the past four years. When the band had the opportunity to look at the footage, it brought back the heat, passion, intensity and audience participation that was at a level far above all expectations. The DVD will be released worldwide through Demolition Records, our UK based label, and we look forward to sharing this magical performance with all of you."

Emo And Goth To Be Made Illegal In Russia
Kerrang! reports: The Russian government is in the process of drafting a law to make emo and goth music illegal.
Last month a parliamentary committee was convened to discuss a draft proposal of the Russian government's Government Strategy In The Sphere Of Spiritual And Ethical Education bill, the details of which were leaked to The Moscow Times. The newspaper subsequently reported that, among other things, the draft bill dubbed the musical movements a "dangerous teen trend" and called for emo and goth websites to be regulated and young people dressing like emos or goths to be banned from entering schools and government buildings.

Def Leppard Singer Has Some Words For Ronnie Dio
Blabbermouth.net reports: Vassil Varbanov of Bulgaria's Tangra Mega Rock recently conducted an interview with DEF LEPPARD frontman Joe Elliott. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow.
Tangra Mega Rock: Do you feel something like a clash between the younger rock generations and you guys — I mean in terms of musicians, not the crowd?
Elliott: No. I don't ever feel competitiveness — it's thrown at me by the media. The media are always trying to make you competitive. I've been asked so many times whether we're in competition with WHITESNAKE. No, we're not! Now we're going out on a co-headlining tour as allies. It's as ridiculous as saying the British army is in competition with the American army in Iraq! They're working together for a common goal. What we are trying to achieve is 1 and 1 makes 3. We are a big band, they are a big band, and if we get together, we are bigger. This makes it more of a spectacle. It should be obvious to people that with the state of music business right now, which is just dying on its ass, the only thing that's surviving is live. We've been doing co-headlining tours for four years in the States — BRYAN ADAMS, JOURNEY — in 2005-2006 it worked brilliantly both for us and for those guys. To do it with a British band in Britain and now in Europe was a logical thing to do. You'll see over the next 4-5 years loads of people doing this. We were just the first to do it here. We did it, because in 2004 our booking agency in America had this brainwave to put BOB DYLAN and WILLIE NELSON on the same bill. What happens is that when the baseball season is closed, these massive fields do nothing, so they just suggest, "How about renting them out to the rock'n'roll industry?" This way they get something, and we get to use these fields, which cost a lot less money, so everybody's happy. So BOB DYLAN and WILLIE NELSON did it, and I saw that BOB DYLAN — BOB Fuckin' DYLAN! — is going as an opening act for WILLIE NELSON! And he's ok with this! That's brilliant! That removed all ego from the situation. So then, when we got off with BRYAN ADAMS, we played at baseball stadiums in front of 23-24 thousand people. When we went out with JOURNEY, it was a similar thing. And the same thing last year, with STYX and REO SPEEDWAGON and FOREIGNER. With this one, for the British shows we were going out last. Tonight we'll also be last, but last night in Albania we were first. There's no ego, no competition. I want everybody to be successful! This is not the Olympics! I would love to see the charts full of rock bands again. Back in 1988 there was a little period in the summer in America where any given week there was either us or GUNS N' ROSES or VAN HALEN, and we were keeping people like MARIAH CAREY and WHITNEY HOUSTON out of the charts! I'd be more interested in getting together with these people. If you have to be competitive, try to get rid of rap and R&B, which I don't have anything against, but the way that the industry has tried to shove rock aside only makes it stronger. So I don't feel any competition with any of these bands. The only time that I will say something negative about a band is when I'm just being pissy, because they say something negative about me. If Ronnie James Dio — as he did — said on that YouTube piece when somebody mentioned Vivian [Campbell, DEF LEPPARD guitarist], "I hope he fuckin' dies!" I would just say, "Ronnie James Dio, go fuck yourself!" So if somebody says, "DEF LEPPARD suck!", then I'll just back the ball like in tennis and say, "No, you suck, man!", but generally speaking, I don't have these problems. When people meet me, they normally see something beyond "Let's Get Rocked". Once they get to know us, people start to think differently about us, not just seeing what's on the surface. It's just a matter of communication, and that's the biggest problem this entire planet has — the lack of it."

Praying Mantis Begins Work On New Album
NWOBHM veterans Praying Mantis have announced that they will be working on a brand new studio album this year, with the current working title of "Touch The Rainbow."
The bands record company (Frontiers Records) states: "They will shortly begin recording and the likelihood is that the album will be recorded during the month of September in Atlanta, Georgia with an anticipated release in early 2009.
"The current lineup of the band includes, of course, founding members Tino and Chris Troy on guitars and bass respectively, Benjamin Reid on drums, Andy Burgess on guitar and Mike Freeland on vocals, the lineup of which they have already played a number of successful festivals in UK and Europe during 2008.
"The new songs once again present the familiar blend of the hard rock edge with very melodic "hookline" choruses that have always been an essential trade mark of Mantis since the 1980's.
"Though this will be yet another album on the ever growing discography of the band, Chris Troy believes that: "This may well prove to be the best album Mantis have ever written!".
"Look out the Mantis are definitely back and kicking!"

Guns N Roses Guitar Hero On The Way?
GNRDaily.com has issued the following report:
"Famous rockers such as GUNS N' ROSES and VAN HALEN are said to be fleshing out deals to capitalise on the popularity of Guitar Hero and Rock Band.
That's according to Front Line Managemet boss Irving Azoff, who was speaking to the Wall Street Journal. Those groups, alongside others such as THE EAGLES and STEELY DAN, "all have deals of varying types in the works with one or the other or both of these companies" said Azoff, referring to Activision and MTV.
The Front Line music label has Aerosmith among others on its books.
The reason Azoff believes videogames deals are becoming so popular is money. "[They] can be much more lucrative than anything you can do in the record business," he said.

Dommin, Mutiny and Port Amoral Sign To Roadrunner
Roadrunner Records has announced the signing of three up and coming new bands to an already diverse roster than includes heavyweights such as Nickelback, Slipknot, Killswitch Engage, Dragonforce, and Theory of a Deadman. Roadrunner's latest signings include Dommin, Mutiny and Port Amoral.
Los Angeles-based goth rock quartet Dommin was discovered by Dirty Icon Productions, a company founded by producers Logan Mader, former guitarist of longtime Roadrunner artist Machine Head, and Lucas Banker. Led by the enigmatic frontman, guitarist and songwriter Kristofer Dommin, Dommin puts a uniquely refreshing spin on the romantic, dark goth sound, bringing a unified voice to the brokenhearted, conflicted swarm of melancholic music fans who prefer to look at the glass as half-full. Veteran A&R rep Monte Conner signed the band to the label and was quick to express his excitement, saying, "Dommin comes across as very fresh and unique in today's landscape. Kristofer Dommin is their secret weapon. His vocals are absolutely compelling, and this is especially evident live where you can feel the power, passion and emotion of every word he sings." Dommin's line up is rounded out by keyboardist Konstantine, bassist Billy James and drummer Cameron. Check out the swell of black-hued, stormy and mysterious goth rock and their video clip of fan favorite “My Heart, Your Hands” on the band's heavily trafficked MySpace page. Look for the band’s Roadrunner debut, produced by Dirty Icon Productions, this winter.
New Jersey-based Mutiny, a band of young turks who play like a troupe of seasoned shred veterans and who plucked their singer from Blackpool, England, thanks to the wonders of MySpace, have also been added to the label roster. The thoroughly metallic outfit was unearthed and signed by A&R man Mike Gitter, who was blown away by the band's live firepower. Gitter says, "The band was playing at a level so early in its career that most bands never touch. With the addition of [vocalist] Chris Clancy, they verge on unbeatable. Mutiny are truly the graduating valedictorians of Generation Guitar Hero." With members ranging in age from 18 to 23, Mutiny's line up is rounded out by bassist Andrew "AJ" Jacobs, guitarists Brandon Jacobs and Lu Obregon, keyboardist Drew Stavola, and drummer Bill Fiore. The Mutiny crew will spend the next few months toiling diligently in the Jacobs family's basement and they won't come out until they have an absolute metal classic on their hands. Turn your ear to their progressive-for-the-new-generation of metal songs posted on their MySpace page.
Winnipeg, Canada's melodic metal band Port Amoral also joins the Roadrunner family. The group formed in 2004 and is comprised of a tandem of brothers, vocalist/bassist Jared Weiss and guitarist Eric Weiss. The line up is rounded out by guitarist Andrew Campbell and drummer Matthew Hallick. Port Amoral were also signed by Conner, whose interest was initially sparked after hearing demos produced by Canada's John Paul Peters (Comeback Kid, Waking Eyes) and taking in the energetic live show. "Port Amoral know how to craft songs with hooks and smart arrangements and their developed level of writing made me take notice," explains Conner. For a taste of the guitar mastery that turned Conner onto the band, check out a demo of the complex mini-epic "Villains" at the band's MySpace page. The band will record its Roadrunner debut with Colin Richardson (Bullet for My Valentine, Trivium, As I Lay Dying) for a winter 2009 release.

Interview
Dethklok Co-Creator/Vocalist/Guitarist Interviewed
The co-creation of comedic geniuses Brendon Small (creator of Adult Swim's Home Movies) and Tommy Blacha (writer of Late Nite with Conan O'Brien and Ali G), Metalocalypse is the most brutal metal cartoon to date. The show is about the metal band Dethklok, the most famous and influential band in the world. So influential, in fact, that Dethklok fans commit mass suicide when Dethklok album releases are delayed. Regardless of knowing that thousands of people die at Dethklok concerts, the fans still attend for the mere opportunity to be a part of history. Dethklok is held as the twelfth largest economy in the world (just above Belgium). Meanwhile, a secret government organization strategizes tirelessly to thwart Dethklok's rise, but keeps their efforts low key, so as to avoid a massive revolt by Dethklok's fans.
Hannah and I had the opportunity to witness two live performances by Dethklok: at The Nokia Center in NYC, and the TLA in Philadelphia. Most, if not all, of the shows on the tour were sold out, and every piece of merchandise was sold (only one box of merchandise was left for the last show of 4000 people). The band, consisting of lead guitarist and vocalist Brendon Small, rhythm guitarist Mike Keneally, bassist Bryan Beller, and drummer Gene Hoglan, played in the dark affront a giant projection screen which played clips from the Metalocalypse cartoon (with lyrics so the fans could sing along). The band incorporated interaction with the cartoons on the screen, including intervals where the band would leave the stage and the audience was left to watch the cartoon for a few minutes until the band returned. The cartoon excerpts were witty leaving the fans laughing, and cheering the band on as they would return to the stage.
This Adult Swim cartoon band has a following that is unsurpassed in death metal. We were lucky to have the opportunity to sit down with Brendon Small, co-creator (and most of the character voices) and Gene Hoglan (legendary Metal Drummer). We asked Small what he thinks about metal, how this idea was conceived, and how it feels to be the voice of the most popular cartoon death metal lead vocalist (Nathan Explosion) in the world. More...
