Kamelot's Khan Comments on New Record Label

As Kamelot continues work on their follow-up to "Ghost Opera," the band has been asked about the situation with their former label SPV/Steamhammer (SPV recently filed for bankruptcy).

"We have met with SPV in Hamburg recently and I know they are trying hard to rebound from their insolvency. We had already terminated our deal months ago with them, even before the insolvency. Since then we have been approached by many labels to release the next Kamelot album, including 2 major labels. We have some great offers and now we just have to decide on the right partners for our next step," states vocalist Khan.

Kamelot is coming off their last show of 2009 playing the Sonisphere Festival in Holland with Metallica, Slipnot and others.

Kamelot frontman, Roy Khan, describes the crowd at their first-ever Sonisphere gig as “brilliant”, admitting he was not “expecting to see so many people out there ...”.

Their new album yet untitled is tentatively schedule for a Feb/Mar 2010 release. The first leg of their 2010 World Tour is going to be announced any day now.

Anvil Readies Re-Release of "This Is Thirteen"

Certainly one of the most feel-good rock n' roll comeback stories of recent times is that of Canadian heavy metal band Anvil. The band, considered a major influence for a generation of hard rockers including Metallica, Slayer, Anthrax, and Guns N' Roses, was the subject of a critically acclaimed, must-see rock-doc, "Anvil! The Story of Anvil," directed by Sacha Gervasi. And in the process, the film has made the group (led by singer/guitarist Steve "Lips" Kudlow and drummer Robb Reiner - both founding members) a household name. But the group's story will certainly not end with the film.

First up for Anvil are U.S. shows opening for Aussie rock legends AC/DC - in football stadiums. "We're really excited about these shows, we've only heard awesome things about playing in football stadiums. I was with the Green Day guys last night, and they were telling me, 'Man, it's probably going to be the gig of your life'!"

And then on September 15, "This is Thirteen" will finally see proper national distribution on CD and vinyl via VH1 Classic Records. The CD will feature the newly recorded, never-before released bonus track "Thumb Hang." The collectible double vinyl LP boasts newly re-recorded versions of Anvil classics "Metal on Metal" and "666." The album, originally recorded in 2007 and produced by Chris Tsangarides (Judas Priest, Thin Lizzy), was primarily available directly from the band via their website and at their concerts.

"'This is Thirteen' is more like our first three albums," says Lips, "which represent our real identity. For many of our albums, we went on an 'integrity hunt' instead of on a 'commercial/radio hunt,' so we became extremely inaccessible to radio. This time, we stepped back and said, 'What were we originally?' And we rediscovered ourselves, I suppose." Reiner adds, "There are three tracks that in my opinion, are definitely, 100% AOR/hard rock/commercial radio tracks - 'American Refuge,' 'Flying Blind,' and 'Feed the Greed.' Catchy melodies, incredible drum feels - they just all rock." More...

Chthonic Singer on Free Tibet and New Album

Speed Beaver Music recently conducted an interview with Freddy Lim, vocalist of Taiwanese black metal band Chthonic, on the Free Tibet concert and the band's new album. Here are a few excerpts from the interview:

Q. Freddy: The Free Tibet concert was amazing, thousands of people, in a Taipei square shouting “Free Tibet!”. Can you explain what it is about Tibet that is so important to Taiwanese? What is the connection to Tibet, which is so far away?

A. Taiwan is in the front line facing China, as a part of the free, democratic world, so it’s very important in this human rights issue, Taiwan should not be quiet, especially as this is the 50th anniversary of the Tibetan uprising against Mao and the Communists. In the world, there are lots of activities about the Free Tibet campaign. In Taiwan though, there were fewer than 200 people who would march on the street in support of the protest.

Q. OK, tell us about the new album, what is it called and what the idea of the album is, what’s the concept?

A. The album is called “Mirror of Retribution”. A mirror of retribution is the first thing you will meet when you are in hell, the Taiwanese, Oriental hell. Through the mirror, you see all the bad things you and your relatives have done in your lifetime. Each spirit has to face the mirror of retribution then the ghost king will send him to the specific level of hell that he deserves. In the Oriental hell, there are ten ghost kings in ten courts and there are 18 levels of hell and hundreds of small levels. So it takes millions of years for you to serve your sentence. So the original idea is to show this philosophy of hell. All the Asians, Hong Kong, Singapore, China, Vietnam, share the same philosophy.

Ninth Circle Issues Road Report

L.A. based metallers Ninth Circle kicked off their Power of One Tour in November of 2008 and has been on the road for eight straight months promoting their new CD, "The Power of One." During this time the band has also seen the reissue of their debut CD, "Ninth Circle." Ninth Circle bassist Frank has issued the following update from the road:

"When we started this tour in November of 2008 with the goal was making it all about our brand new CD, The Power of One, and showing fans just how great the songs are live. What we didn't expect was the record company coming to us and saying, 'let's reissue the debut CD and keep this tour going!' So being who we are, we couldn't resist continuing the tour and promoting two great CD's and mixing up our set list each night with new and old stuff. It's really exciting! Playing with Dokken and Y&T really show you what's possible. You get to see what they do night in and night out and just how fresh each show is for the fans. That's what it's really about, the fans and the music. As Don Dokken said to us backstage one night, 'it's all about the music, right?' It sure is! And playing with these bands really gives us something to shoot for each and every night."

Obscura Bassist Comments on Metal Mixing

Dutch bass player Jeroen Paul Thesseling (OBSCURA/Ex-PESTILENCE) says most bassists should be more audible in death metal recordings. "In many of the death metal productions the bass guitar is simply absent or inaudible in the mix, which is a shame. Perhaps this is one of those aspects that will change as the genre evolves. We are lucky to have bassists like Steve DiGiorgio and Alex Webster, both of whom have contributed greatly to the death metal style of bass playing."
