Tom Gabriel Warrior Named Curator For Roadburn '10

Holland's Roadburn festival has announced that Tom Gabriel Warrior, founder of Hellhammer, Celtic Frost, and Triptykon has agreed to act as the curator for the Roadburn festival on Friday, April 16, 2010, and host a special event at Roadburn, called Only Death Is Real.

Tom's duties as curator include personally selecting the bands that will play on Only Death Is Real, as well as to perform the first major headlining set with his latest incarnation, Triptykon. Tom will be Roadburn’s third curator, following up on David Tibet in 2008 and Neurosis earlier this year.

The Roadburn Festival organizers further comment:

"We are overjoyed to have secured Tom's involvement in Roadburn this year, as he stands as a truly groundbreaking artist, with his previous bands having been extremely divisive, as is often the case with truly unique and original works of art. Ultimately his canon of work would prove not only legendary but hugely inspirational for an entire generation of musicians in the metal, doom and dark psychedelic scenes.

"Tom has always enjoyed pushing the envelope musically and challenging boundaries, and it was entirely that mindset that made him a perfect fit to act as our curator. It has been a constant goal of ours to keep Roadburn a festival that not only celebrates the established but charts new territory, and we could think of no better spirit guide than Tom Gabriel Warrior. We are looking forward to the new ideas that he will bring to our festival, as we feel that we are truly kindred spirits."

Tom Gabriel Warrior commented: "It is a surprise and an honor to be asked by Roadburn to act as a curator, and I am accepting this extraordinary opportunity with much gratitude and due humility. In my eyes, Roadburn is one of the most courageous and artistic festivals in existence, and its history is, in essence, a list of concerts by groups I deeply admire. It is quite a challenge to follow such footsteps, both as a curator and as a musician. I will try my very best to ensure that the groups I intend to propose to the organizers of Roadburn will be as ravishingly dark, unique, and exciting to the festival's visitors as they are to me."

Roadburn 2010, including Tom Gabriel Warrior's Only Death Is Real, will run for three days from Thursday, April 15 to Saturday, April 17 at the 013 venue and Midi Theatre in Tilburg, Holland. There will be an additional afterburner event on Sunday, April 18, 2010.

Behemoth Streaming New Song "Shemhamforash"

Behemoth is currently streaming a new song titled "Shemhamforash" from their upcoming album "Evangelion" online at their MySpace page. Behemoth also issued the following statement about the song:

"The Shemhamphorasch is an epithet for a 216-letter name of God discovered by medieval kabbalists in the book of Exodus by reading the letters of three verses in a specific order. The name is composed of 72 groups of three letters, each of these triplets being the name of an angel or intelligence. According to the magical tradition, King Solomon evoked 72 demons, confined them in a bronze vessel sealed by magical symbols, and obliged them to work for him. These demons are catalogued in various magical grimoires, most notably in Lemegeton, which gives descriptions of their powers, appearance and manner, as well as instructions for controlling them.

"These demons are shadows of the 72 angels of shemhamphorasch. Using their names and sigils, we are able to call on the various demons for various favors. Regardless of our opinions on subjectivity or objectivity of such a phenomenon, despite of our interpretative model of their existence, be it ontological (magicko-religious) or epistemological (magicko-scientific), certain things do happen. Demons and angels enable us to categorize life experience and to face it more consciously. Our life and art is not about providing you with ideology and persuade different 'isms'. It is a battle field for opposite forces, pangs of childbirth whose name will be Perfection."

The Gates Of Slumber Comments On Upcoming Album

Indianapolis doom metallers The Gates of Slumber have issued the following statement about their upcoming album "Hymns of Blood and Thunder:"

"For my part I started working on Hymns of Blood and Thunder, almost immediately after the Conqueror sessions. It's an odd part of my personality that I tend to hate what I've just created and always look back at previous works longingly... strange, maybe but that's just how I am. Well, Conqueror was no exception to this rule, part of me hated it until we were out on the road in support and then on the stage the songs started to make sense and take on lives of their own... that's how it's always been. Writing and recording are a fucking chore... but the chaos of the live setting makes the songs jump to life.

"The odd thing here is that from the first moment I sat down to work on music for this record I knew that it was going to surpass everything on Conqueror; and in a sense it has. Even up through the challenging sessions, and they were a bitch, I knew that this material was in many ways stronger. Conqueror took some very interesting and for us, progressive turns. But for me it often seemed to get lost in a shuffle of not knowing who or what it was. The songs on Hymns know themselves and they know each other, if you follow. Chaos Calling's barking guitar is a cousin to Death Dealer's snarly chords, and in turn Death Dealer is a brother to Beneath the Eye of Mars... in the same sense that the songs on South of Heaven or Sad Wings of Destiny are related. Each of the songs goes through it's own movement. In place of 'the epic song' or 'the fast song' each of these takes it's turn being that: Chaos Calling is fast, but in the bridging mid-section you will be surprised by the feel change. More...

Ex-Anthrax Singer Dan Nelson Claims He Wasn't Ill

As previously reported, thrash metal legends Anthrax has parted ways with vocalist Dan Nelson due to the singer reportedly being seriously ill. However, a message from Nelson seems to contradict these statements. It reads as follows:

"On the advice of counsel I have remained silent to the statements issued by Anthrax in recent days and now must address these issues to my loyal fans and others. I want to set the record straight.

"I was never seriously ill or sick at all, as reported in Anthrax’s 7/17/09 press release. This extremely inflammatory statement hurt me tremendously. This statement misled fans, friends and family members into believing that I was seriously ill when I was not. I was not aware such a statement was being issued and it came as a total shock to me, as I’m sure it did to all of you. It was the other band members’ decision to cancel the tour dates, not mine. I was ready, willing and able to do my job. After issuing the press release the other band members decided, on their own accord, that I had 'resigned' from the band. I never resigned from the band.
