Emo And Goth To Be Made Illegal In Russia
Kerrang! reports: The Russian government is in the process of drafting a law to make emo and goth music illegal.
Last month a parliamentary committee was convened to discuss a draft proposal of the Russian government's Government Strategy In The Sphere Of Spiritual And Ethical Education bill, the details of which were leaked to The Moscow Times. The newspaper subsequently reported that, among other things, the draft bill dubbed the musical movements a "dangerous teen trend" and called for emo and goth websites to be regulated and young people dressing like emos or goths to be banned from entering schools and government buildings.

Even though this is one of the funniest storys I have heard....its not right, music and the "music trends" do not cause kids to do bad things or make them dangerous, I have listen to metal for a long long time, I am also a huge Manson fan and have been a Marilyn Manson fan for a long time. That does not me dangerous or make me a bad person, its just f***ing music, an escape from life when you listen to it. People need to understand that music doesnt ruin life, parents who dont care, teachers who dont care, and people who dont care is the reason why people go bad. And seriously, why ban emo? If that music does anything, it just make kids gay.
Shredder, people are so fvcked up in Russia that their government in an attempt to keep people procreating has to bribe them! Their suicide rates and deaths from alcohol poisioning are sky high ane exceed any country in the world. There is a reson why the women there are so desprate to get out of that country and put themselfs on a mail order list to be married off to a forigener(sp?).
Damn Commi's. It's sh** like this thought that makes me like Commie's better than nazi's; at least they get sh** right half the time, instead of never. Vodka for instance, I think evens out for me against how sh**ty their launguage is. Their kickass tanks makes up for how horrible Siberia is, and their frequent use of Molotov's to kill Nazi's makes up for them allying with the Germans in the first place. In this case, sure, they're sh**ting on human expressions of individuality... but who doesn't hate people who look like The Cure?

That's why I posed my question as to how will they legally define emo & goth, not to say they'll follow it, but.... When I was in high school, only 4 years ago, I was commonly labelled goth, which made wonder how they will enforce this? What would my "punishment" have been for being "perceived" as goth, now a "threat to Russian youth"?
Dee would do it too F.A.N!
Another tid bit of info on Russian politics is that they are a Socialist government. They do not support individualism. That is why as crappy as this news is to me as I am too all for individualism, not at all surprised they would do something like this.
Good move, Russia. Now get rid of rap. Then we'll talk.
Seriously, however much I approve of the elimination of emo and goth, I don't want it to happen this way, orchestrated by dipsh**s in positions of power. Cause you know this means that all "dark"-themed metal (read: metal) is going to be lumped in with goth and summarily disposed of thanks to the narrow-minded f***tardedness of politicians. It's a good thing that all Russian metal bands play cheesy power metal...
Yeah, that's going to work great. Instead of actually solving your countries problems, force them not to dress a certain way, then everything will fix itself! If people want to dress like idiots, let them. If you ban them from dressing one way, they'll either not listen to be a big bad rebel, or find some other stupid way to dress to "express themselves."
Haven't they learned that sensorship is never the best way to go.I'm not a big fan of GOTH although I like it way better than I like EMO.But either way your treading dangerous ground when you try to regulate what people do behind closed door's and there not hurting someone.People are allway's gonna gravitate toward the new and different.especially kid's.They really need to let this one go.
this is funny, but there is a difference with goth there. Goth there is taken more seriously like they do dress like black metalists when there in concert, and emos well that's funny so I dont care. But if you walk around with a wrist band, and tattoos on your arms and a band shirt with camo shorts and steel toes you won't be considered goth or emo. I travelled to Russia twice and even though I obviously went to more of a tourist spots there is a difference. There almost like germany they like metal and techno, more techno though. Just dont go to Russia with tight pants acne make up and a dildo up your a$$ and your be fine. so this is funny and useless
I sincerly hope our government(USA) never becomes as dense as this.... I'm no fan of emo or goth but to think they are actually trying to outlaw a certain genre of music. Who's to say what goth or emo is, I can only sit here and think that this is only going to create more trouble in a country that is allready doomed.

That explains everything and relieved to know you are 16! You have alot to say, however nothing of any substance about this subject and are still learning about the world, how it works and the way to be able to talk about it on an intellectual level. You will get there with alot of education. Just my observations as a 23 year old woman. Just remember to keep hitting the books and and as I tell all of my younger sisters of steel; your brain will get you far.
Thanx Kalis, I'll be sure to do my research. I'm not trying to offend anyone personally. My heads a work in progress. I may not know everything, but I know the world isn't fair, and I may not know what everyone else my be going through, but I side with people who deserve respect. I'm actually quite capable of looking at things very seriously, just at the right place @ the right time, otherwise people might take me too seriously. Thanx agian.
I still believe what happened at this event is unfair!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Its un-fair yes, but unlike here in America, Russia has no form of constitution that protects the individual. Life in Russia is far from fair. Do I understand why they would do this? Yes, its in their nature sadly. I am feeling pretty lucky to live in a country that has the right to freedom of speach, religon and to bear arms to protect myself.
Looking at the comments, seems like I'm the only one who's actually been to Russia. And in any case, this bill will never pass. Just some BS by a couple of oversensitive parlament members. There are bills like this in every nation, 'ban tobacco' ban alcohol, ban metal, ban porn' blah blah blah and they never pass. Till now
^LOL!
I don't pretend to know everything, but crossing Russia off your 'places to visit' list is a HORRIBLE choice. There's way too much unique culture, history and scenery there to pass it up. Especially if you're doing so on the basis of their national alcohol-related deaths rates.
As for banning music, no Western government would ever bother to try it - not because they know they wouldn't succeed, but simply because music is far too popular and simple a distraction for the masses. The government isn't going to ban us from listening to music if we'd rather do that than investigate their affairs. Sure, you can listen to music about what the government's doing wrong, but I've never yet seen a song unite a people to civil action.
Music is an artform, a reflection of self. If the Russian government bans a particular type of art, they will be banning a particular reflection of self, which is impossible unless we allow our imaginations to run to the "thought police" in Orwell's '1984'. This legislation is a mockery of its' legislators, if it is indeed not mere rumour and hearsay.
while i do not agree with some russian policies and supression of freedom of speech, however to all of u who say russia sucks i would understand considering all the things going on at the moment, but nevertheless russia under putin is a far better place than it was 8 years ago in terms of living standards for working class people and most people there actually in favour of him so unless u have lived there and been a victim of unfair treatment it is pure ignorant to say such things considering u get ur info and only know whats going there through news reports which are totally biased in the western world due to russia's opposition in power to america.
and alcohol consumption is just as high in other countries so stop this stereotyping.
as for banning the music i think its a step too far by any means and i dont think that its gonnabe possible considering previous russian leader in the 90s tried to ban alcohol and what happened?!
i dont know if im gonna get grilled for this statement but i just tried to explain my view
Actually, the Russian Constitution has plenty of articles that protect the individual. It's in Chapter two of said Constitution. Article 29, in particular, clearly states the individuals rights of free speech. Is it perfect? No. Can it change? Yes. Our own "Patriot Act" is proof of that. But I don't think that a bunch of made up teenagers who are depressed because their girlfriend/boyfriend dumped them and thinks that that makes them special in some way is going to cause such a political change. Unless they're terrorists. Then they're fvcked.
i am strongly against putting a ban on any type of artistical expression or musical form (emo and goth included)....both emo and goth (kids/style/music) generally annoy me, but you cant ban a person from being their self, well idealistically anyway. i quite enjoy ripping on and poking fun at goth and emo kids. but damn, some of the goth and emo chicks are f***in hot!
i could be a right B*****D and cite sooo many time sthe russian "government"has fcuked with the eastern european living standards but whats the point.. anyone in america need only look at the countries east of germany..
thats what 60 years of russia does.. it kills and retards everything..
commie rule fails.. cuba is a stagnant island.. and its a shame putin rules the ex USSR, because we are going to be in a second cold war.. because of him
Oh my..
Let be realistic, in the eyes of many, goths, emos, metalheads (either fans of black metal, death metal or any other sub-gender of metal) they all are labeled the same. Anyone that wears black clothes, boots, long hair etc. will be targted..So you guys above who say "im not goth Im okay" so some stupid thing like that, think again..They are gonna target everyone that looks like an "emo" or "goth" as if they will know how to define whether you are goth or hardcore fan of Burzum..
It will be interesting to see how they will implement such change, cause I belive it will fail just like many things have already faild within Russia but also world-wide. Example, they tried to ban (globally) a CoF shirt that had printed on it "Jesus is a c***" I grant you, some people were arrested however, do people still wear it? YES..Is everyone who wears it ending up in jail r with a fine? NO! So I think its just gonna fail like many policies world "leaders" come up with..
I find it funny that the Russian government has nothing better to do than pick on subcultures.
If they're only concerned with the way "goth" or "emo" people appear outwardly and their musical preferences, their priorities are completely out of order.
If they're concerned with something deeper like these people's mindsets, their attitudes towards life, then simply banning certain clothing and music isn't going to help at all and the ban is therefore irrelevant.
You shouldn't say "second cold war". Just because the wall came down and they are not Commie anymore it doesn't mean a thing has changed. Putin may not be president anymore but he still calls the shots. I saw in the newspaper last week a Russian general said if the Americans put up a missle defence shield in Poland then they will put missles on Cuba again. The Americans basicly said do it and it means war. You cannot tell me things have changed. Oh Kalis did you get my email I sent from my new phone?
Putin made himself Prime minister of Russia. He made it indefinate and the first Prime minister of Russia.
Wiggles, I got your e-mail and attempted to reply, but it said "problem sending this e-mail" Its been doing that for the last two weeks on every e-mail I send out.
oh and for the people who said you cant tell a goth from a metalhead you are retarded.
metalheads look like EVERYDAY people, goths...well, look at marilyn manson.
Now if Dave Mustaine was walking down the street next to Marilyn Manson, who would the cops pick up? Do you realize how dumb that point you tried to make was now?
np: Belphegor-Stigma Diabolicum
^But they should. Just my contention, I never felt the need to dress up for everyday life. There are those who wear their heart on their sleeve, those who cover their heart with their sleeve, and then there's the nudists :P
And those Russian rave chicks kick arse!
Now Playing: "Rx Queen" - Deftones
well it sucks and all that ignorant polititians may not be able to tell the differences between a metal head an and emo or goth, but since this ridiculous law is being proposed in a country not remotely close to me, im not too fussed. but in all serriousness though there is no way they can fairly enforce this law. anyone wearing black will be targeted. its going to go way over the top.
it would be funny to see how they plan to define an emo in legislation.
sucks for russians though.
