Guns N' Roses Bassist To Tour Solo

While Axl Rose puts the final touches to Chinese Democracy (that phase of the production process is scheduled through 2007), Guns N' Roses bass player Tommy Stinson is touring with a backup band, then solo, through October.

Stinson is probably known to many GN'R fans only as the guy who was standing next to the drum kit during the newest version of the band's few live shows. But to others, Stinson is known as one of Minneapolis's fearsome four, The Replacements, which he formed at the age of 13 with his brother Bob, Chris Mars and Paul Westerberg. After that storied, drunken escapade, three of the original members took off to do solo projects, with Bob passing away after years of hard living. Stinson formed Bash & Pop, which was basically his project.

Last year, he borrowed some mobile equipment from Frank Black (of Pixies fame) and started recording. That led to the solo album "Village Gorilla Head," which led to this tour. Stinson kicked things off at San Francisco's Bottom of the Hill August 28 with his opening act, Alien Crime Syndicate, which also acts as Stinson's backup band. The tour stops include his home city of Minneapolis, Chicago, Detroit, Philly, New York, and Hoboken, N.J., plus dates in England, Scotland and Ireland.

Stinson tours Europe through October in a solo acoustic show, playing with Jesse Malin.

Motorhead Cancel US Tour

Motorhead have been forced to cancel their previously announced U.S. tour scheduled for September/October due to a foot injury suffered by vocalist/bassist Lemmy.

Lemmy, ignoring the pain and against his European doctor's recommendation, completed the few remaining shows on the Motorhead summer festival tour.

Since he was not able to rest his foot for a while, Lemmy's injury worsened, and his U.S. doctor insisted in no uncertain terms that Lemmy stay off his foot for several weeks in order for it to heal properly.

Motorhead will return for a U.S. tour in March 2005. "Lemmy, guitarist Philip Campbell and drummer Mikkey Dee hate to disappoint their fans but it is necessary for Lemmy's injury to heal so that Motorhead can rock long into the future," reads a statement from the band.

Seattle Metal Online Celebrates Its 4th Year

Seattle Metal Online will celebrate four years of helping local metal bands network and learn about the music business with its fourth annual Seattle Metal Online Anniversary Festival on Saturday, September 18 at Studio 7 in Seattle.

Seattle Metal Online (SMO) is an organization created by Carrie and Joe Jauregui in August of 2000, out of a love for metal music. They had a desire to help local metal bands network and learn the music business. The organization has been interviewed by Seattle Weekly, as well as many other local newspapers. As of August 2004, approximately 250 local metal bands are part of the Seattle Metal Online "Brotherhood."

When asked how the organization had changed over the last four years, Carrie replied, "In the beginning, there were less than 25 bands on SMO, and we had a much more of a 'family' type feeling. That is when the 'Brotherhood' started. Now the scene is SO huge, that in all these years, I still haven't met all of the 'family' yet! I love the fact that there are so many metal styles to choose from now. I was just looking at some old promo shots from a couple bands from years ago....those bands are no more, but I had to sit and look at the faces of those guys and remember those times and how far we have come since then.....it's amazing really...."

Event organizer Geri Nahrgang has spent many hours lining up the venue, lighting, sound, bands, and sponsors. When asked how to choose 14 bands out of 250 on SMO to play the festival, Geri responded, "Lisa Bonner of Syren Spawn and I listed all the bands, then we decided who had given the most help and support to SMO overall. We ended up with a list of 37 bands, to fit into 14 slots! After that we drew names out of a hat because all of these bands were so good."

The fourth annual Seattle Metal Online Anniversary Festival is being held Saturday, September 18, 2004 from 1:00 p.m. to 1:30 a.m. at Studio 7, 110 South Horton, Seattle, WA. (one block north of Spokane Street, between 1st Ave South and Occidental). The cost is $7 before 4 p.m. and $10 after 4 p.m. The show is all ages, but an upstairs bar for 21+ (must have ID) is stocked with beer to enjoy while watching the show.

Local metal bands scheduled to play the SMO Anniversary Fest include: The Almighty Needledick, NME, Enkrya, Just Karma, Immoral Intent, Ground Zero, Prozak Staple, Dissonance, Dorgan Onor, Weight of the World, The Braindead, M.T.F., Expiration Date and the Seatown Manglers.

Tony Iommi And Glenn Hughes To Release Album

Tony Iommi and Glenn Hughes offer proof in the form of the album 'The 1996 DEP Sessions' set for release by Sanctuary Records on September 28, 2004. The album is being released under the banner Iommi with Glenn Hughes.

'The 1996 DEP Sessions' features eight electrifying songs recorded by these two legends. Iommi is one of the most influential and widely recognized guitarists in the history of rock music, known from Black Sabbath. Hughes was a member of Trapeze before achieving worldwide superstardom as the co-lead vocalist and bass guitarist in Deep Purple in the mid-1970s. He has enjoyed a prolific and diverse solo career.

The two friends had worked together a decade before on 1986's 'Seventh Star' album, which the record company at the time credited to Black Sabbath Featuring Tony Iommi for marketing purposes. The underrated 'Seventh Star' certainly had its highlights, but it featured a then-contemporary 1980s sound. 'The 1996 DEP Sessions' are said to have a much grittier, forceful, timeless sound.

The eight tracks on 'The 1996 DEP Sessions' are: More...

Islamic Party Seeks To Ban Scorpions

HindustanTimes.com is reporting that Islamic fundamentalists urged the Malaysian government on Wednesday (Sept. 8) to bar a concert by the German rock group Scorpions, claiming the band would corrupt Malaysian youths.

"Concerts like these are the catalysts for hedonism and vice in society," Salahuddin Haji Ayub, a youth leader of the Pan-Malaysian Islamic Party, said in a protest note to the Religious Affairs Department.

"Research has shown how the crumbling of self-worth, morals and dignity in young people begin from deviant programmes like these," said the statement.

There was no immediate response from the government of this moderate, predominantly Muslim Southeast Asian country and promoters said that they planned to go ahead with the concert Sept 13 at a 50,000-seat stadium.

The party claimed that the concert comes a day after the Muslim holy day commemorating the Prophet Mohammed's ascension to heaven and therefore "insults Islam."

Selina Kok, spokeswoman for concert organizer Star Planet, said the Islamic party was being unfair.

"These guys are rockers, no doubt, but they've been around for years and people know they are a healthy band," she said. Kok said that the organizers would work with the department should any changes be proposed.

The fundamentalist party, which was obliterated as an opposition force in elections in March, has previously protested concerts by artists like Michael Jackson, Mariah Carey and Linkin Park. None was banned, but Jackson changed the city where he performed in 1996, and some entertainers have agreed to more modest dress. Linkin Park was told not to scream too much.
