Rage - Live Album & DVD

SPV has announced two new offerings from long running German trio RAGE. According to a posting on the upcoming releases section of their website:
Bottoms up, pop the champagne corks, its party time! Twenty years ago almost precisely to the day, a young German musician and his band, Avenger, ensconced themselves in the studio to record their debut album Prayers Of Steel. Were talking 1984, the name of the hopeful young vocalist was Peavy Wagner, and Prayers Of Steel is significant from todays point of view because everything that comes under the heading of 20 Years of Rage was spawned by this recording. Avenger soon became Rage, and the initial musical steps of the band developed into an unparalleled career. Peavy and his two accomplices, Victor Smolski (guitar) and Mike Terrana (drums), are about to celebrate their anniversary with their first live album, From The Cradle To The Stage, documenting in no uncertain terms: Rage have never been better!

The double album, simultaneously released on double DVD and in a limited digi-pack edition including CD and double DVD, consists of recordings cut at the Zeche in Bochum on January 25, 2004 the night that Rage performed an over three-hour show, playing the most important tracks from every phase of the bands career, some of them original arrangements, others updated versions. The band, featuring an international line-up unique to the metal scene, demonstrated all over again just what a technically accomplished act they are. Victor Smolski is without doubt one of the best guitarists worldwide. His feel for rhythm is unique; the tone and expression of his solos are simply awesome. The same can be said of Mike Terrana: the former Yngwie Malmsteen drummer is the driving force behind every Rage number, in every sense of the word. His timing is precise, his feel for catchy grooves unfailing. And last but not least there's Peavy himself: for two decades, he has given the band a face and a voice and is as brilliant a bassist as he is a songwriter. Peavy is the thread that runs through Rages history. Some call him a figurehead, other simply call him Mr. Rage.
Due out on November 15th, Rage’s From The Cradle To The Stage will be issued in standard jewel case (double live CD), super king size jewel case (double DVD) and a limited edition digipak including the double Live CD and double DVD.

The tracklisting (DCD) - CD1 - ‘Orgy Of Destruction’, ‘War Of Worlds’, ‘Great Old Ones’, ‘Paint The Devil On The Wall’, ‘Sent By The Devil’, ‘Firestorm’, ‘Down’, ‘Prayers Of Steel’, ‘Suicide’, ‘Days Of December’, ‘Unity’, ‘Anarchy’ (Drum solo), ‘Enough Is Enough’, ‘Invisible Horizons’, ‘Set This World On Fire’.

CD2 - ‘Flesh And Blood’, ‘Rocket Science’ (Guitar solo), ‘Soundchaser’, ‘Straight To Hell’, ‘Back In Time’, ‘Refuge’, ‘From The Cradle To The Grave’, ‘Black In Mind’, ‘Solitary Man’, ‘Don´t Fear The Winter’, ‘All I Want’, ‘Higher Than The Sky’. (The track ‘Enough Is Enough’ does not appear on the DVD).

Queensryche To Participate In No Vote Left Behind

No Vote Left Behind has announced the initial list of participating artists for its festival/fundraiser, which will take place in most major Seattle venues September 23rd - 26th.

Based on the premise that music has the power to change things - like presidents - NVLB has assembled a diverse cross section of the creative community united in the desire to effect a change in our country's current regime, and to raise a collective voice toward a more progressive agenda.

Artists participating in the festival will include Queensryche, Pearl Jam, David Cross, Mudhoney, John Doe, Grant-Lee Phillips, Pansy Division, The Scavengers, Jon Brion, Matthew Caws (Nada Surf), John Roderick (Long Winters), John Vanderslice, The Delays, Robbers On High Street, Kinski, El Vez, Hedwig And The Angry Inch and many more to be confirmed shortly.

"It's hard to believe that it was just a few short months ago that I came back from an exasperating Christmas visit with family and hatched the idea that was to become No Vote Left Behind," says co-founder Natasha George. "NVLB has grown in ways that I could have never imagined. Thanks to everyone who helped us make this happen!"

"This festival is a tribute to the incredible music scene here in Seattle,"says co-booker Barbara Mitchell. "There's an amazing amount of talent, but more than that there's a deep sense of community and a willingness to work toward a common goal - in this case, making a statement that it's time for a regime change. We couldn't have done this without the club booking agents, bands who talked to their friends, and everyone else who was willing to help us. Amazingly, it worked!"

Participating venues include the Crocodile, Showbox, Sunset Tavern, Tractor Tavern, Neumo's, Graceland and the Comet Tavern, among others.
An announcement of the full line-up, including specific venues and dates for each artist, will be made after Labor Day, with tickets to go on sale Friday, Sept 10, 2004. To celebrate the announcement of the line-up, a kick-off event will be held at Neumo's on Saturday, September 11th, featuring Outtasite, Children of the Revolution, and Sir Mix-a-lot. A portion of the proceeds from this show will benefit NVLB. For more information on the kick-off event click here.

Due to the federal regulations, you must be at least 18 years of age and a registered U.S. citizen to purchase tickets to these shows. No exceptions. If you elect to purchase tickets to No Vote Left Behind events, you are making a financial contribution to No Vote Left Behind, which is a political action committee. Donations to NVLB are not tax-deductible.

No Vote Left Behind will fund:
* A fundraising music festival in Seattle the weekend of September 23-26, 2004
* Targeted donations to the Democratic National Committee to help secure a Kerry/Edwards victory in November
* Progressive candidates in contested congressional races in order to win back the legislative branch
* Progressive, like-minded PACs and causes such as voter registration, election monitoring, and verified voting drives

How We Are Different - With nearly $650 million in yearly revenues and 8,700 local jobs, the Seattle music industry is a cultural and economic force. NVLB is working to transform this vibrant community into a national political funding source. As NVLB's Chris Olson explains, "There are a lot of other great organizations that are using music to increase voter turn-out and register voters. We want to use music more directly as a fundraising tool. We really want to be a partisan voice in the music community working for regime change. The reason we organized as a hard-money PAC is because it allows us to have that voice, and to say, 'Our community is against Bush.'"

While ousting the Bush administration is the driving mission behind all NVLB activity, NVLB funds will also go to fund progressive candidates' campaigns for the House and Senate in hotly-contested races, because there is more to regime change than the presidential election.

Life Of Agony Sign With Epic Records?

Black Sabbath The Complete Recording History

Rockdetector.com executive editor Garry Sharpe-Young has been working on a leviathan account of Black Sabbath's complete recording history, from the earliest demos through to the "Reunion" album and, possibly, beyond. Already having two highly praised Sabbath-related titles under his belt, "The Story of the Ozzy Osbourne Band" and "Black Sabbath – Never Say Die", Garry has spent the best part of a year researching this upcoming tome.

"For me, the fascination with the previous books was in getting all the behind-the-scenes detail on how the bands functioned," Garry said in a press release. "From the many letters from Sabbath fans I received, it just seemed obvious to apply that detail to the songs themselves. With 'Complete Recording History' I'm tackling each album song by song. Where the ideas came from, how they were recorded, evolved and what impact they had."

Garry's previous works received unanimous glowing praise from the Sabbath community. "Even Tony Iommi rang me to say he thought I’d done a good job!" Sharpe-Young said. Exclusive interviews included more than 50 related musicians including, among many others, Ronnie James Dio, Geezer Butler, Ian Gillan, Tony Martin, Glenn Hughes, Rob Halford, Geoff Nicholls, David Donato, Eric Singer, Rudy Sarzo, Bob Daisley, Lee Kerslake, Carmine Appice, Tommy Aldridge, Bobby Rondinelli, Dave Spitz, Bernie Torme, Brad Gillis, Phil Soussan, Jo Burt, Terry Chimes and the late Cozy Powell, Randy Castillo and Ray Gillen.

“Right now I’m looking for comments from other musicians on these classic songs," Garry explained. "I'm asking well-known rockers about their favorite Sabbath tracks, what they mean to them, how these songs impacted upon them as musicians and their own musical analysis of the songs themselves. I think its befitting that Black Sabbath's legacy should be honoured by those prominent in the heavy metal community. After all, which metal guitarist has not at some stage played a Tony Iommi riff? Even my 12-year-old son is blasting out 'Symptom of the Universe'!"

"Black Sabbath – The Complete Recording History" is slated for a late 2005 publication. Any musicians wishing to contribute should contact Garry through the Rockdetector.com web site.

Powerman 5000 New Songs In New Video Game

Powerman 5000 have set an October 26 release date for their collection of rarities, "The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly Vol. 1". The 20-track disc, due via singer Spider One's Megatronic Records (distributed by iMusic), will include B-sides and rare early recordings made between 1991-1996 at the very beginning of the Boston band's career. One notable inclusion is their unique take on Bjork's "Army of Me", recorded in 1996.

Everything about the new disc gives true insight into the band's early days, right down to the artwork. The cover photo is an earlier shot taken in 1994, while the back cover and CD booklet flaunts a collage of flyers and original illustrations that Spider designed and printed to advertise their shows in and around Boston. As Spider One writes in liner notes, "We were ahead of our time, behind our time, horrible and brilliant, all at once. We were the hardest working band in Boston and if you were lucky enough to be around in those days, you absolutely knew who we were. These tracks were left exactly as they were recorded, not a note has been altered. Hopefully this disc will give you a sense of what was a very exciting moment in time for a band called Powerman 5000."

In addition to "The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly Vol. 1", fans will soon get a preview of what their upcoming new album has in store as three new songs — "The Last Night On Earth", "The Way It Is" and "Riot Time", which were recorded at guitarist Adam 12's studio, Qi (prounounced "chee") Lab Studios in Los Angeles, CA — will first be featured on THQ's "WWE SmackdownT Vs. Raw" video game, which is set for release November 2 exclusively for PlayStation 2. The tracks will be heard throughout the game itself, in the promotional trailer and as part of the game's online advertising campaign. They will also most likely appear on the band's forthcoming studio album. A video for "Last Night On Earth" from "WWE Smackdown!T vs. Raw" will be shot in Los Angeles later this month — directed by Spider One — and will be serviced to various TV outlets by early October. Spider One previously directed "Super Nova Goes Pop" from the group's platinum "Tonight The Stars Revolt!" album, co-directed "When Worlds Collide" and "Nobody's Real" from "Tonight The Stars Revolt!" with Dave Meyers, and co-directed "Relax" (the band's cover of Frankie Goes To Hollywood's classic '80s song from the "Zoolander" soundtrack album) with Mark Klasfield.
