Mondo Generator Says Ozzfest "Wasn't Our Scene"

Mark Carras of Rock My Monkey recently conducted an interview with MONDO GENERATOR frontman Nick Oliveri (also ex-KYUSS, QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE). A couple of excerpts from the chat follow:

Rock My Monkey: Why did you drop off Ozzfest? Was it a money issue?

Nick Oliveri: You know, it was just many different things. I feel like it was a lot of fun, and we got to do the West Coast. I did Ozzfest with QUEENS in I think it was 2000, or 2002? I think it's 2000. We didn't do the West Coast. We did it on our own. It was actually quite cool to do the West Coast with the band. With it being MONDO it was a lot of fun. It was cool. But, yeah, I think everything was going quite smooth. I think it was there for stronger, metal bands like BEHEMOTH. That really isn't our vibe. And it wasn't that people were hating us, and we weren't hating it, hating them. It was a really good time. But yeah, it seemed like it was maybe not our scene. Maybe if there's metal in MONDO, I don't know if there is, but if there is, there's a different style of metal, then. More on the rock and roll side, maybe MOTÖRHEAD's style than JUDAS PRIEST, or something, I guess you can say. I don't know if that makes sense. I don't know. And there's nothing against that. Whatever floats your boat. I'm down with similar music. I like a lot of metal stuff. But I don't know if they necessarily, if they really got MONDO. Not that we were ran off because of that. I'm saying… I don't know if it was really a fit. I don't know if it really made sense.

Rock My Monkey: So you don't think that the reaction you were getting, the positive response that you were getting from it was worth maybe say the expense of what it took to stay on that tour?

Nick Oliveri: Yes and no. I mean, yeah, it was pretty expensive to stay on that tour. It's a great thing for Ozzy's fans and stuff to have a free gig. It's cool, man. Right on. He's done a lot of cool tours. That's probably the coolest thing that he's done is that he's gone out and played for people for free. That's quite cool, you know? I think a free ticket is a great thing. But for a smaller band, it could be harder. It's harder to go out for free. Not to say like, "Oh, it's about the money." But if you got a band, it costs money. It's a little bit about money.

Rock My Monkey: Right, right, right.

Nick Oliveri: If you're doing it at home with your mom, and you're sixteen, and you got a cool band, you're like. "Let's go on tour, it's rad!" It doesn't matter. You go home and you're broke, but you had a great time and you played music, and you got to do what really matters is go out and rock. But you know, my guys have lives and mortgages and shit like that.

Rock My Monkey: Josh Homme told Kerang! magazine lately that the rift between you and him is tearing him apart, and that he kind of misses you. And you have said that you could have added what was missing from this most recent QUEENS CD. Is that friendship on the way to being mended, and do I smell a reunion anytime soon?

Nick Oliveri: Dude, I had no idea that… I actually said that about "Lullabies". I actually picked up the new record, and it's much different than what I thought it was going to be. And I tripped out when I heard it. I was, "Wow, this is different." And I think that's what's cool about it is that it is very, very different. It sounds weird at times. Some of it's more in a heavy kind of QUEENS kind of vibe, and some of it goes into like new territory for something called QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE, or even Josh, you know, doing, if he got it under his own name, like his name, you know? But I think, I think it's, you know, I don't know anything about a reunion. I think reunions are kind of weird. But you know what? It's Josh's band. I always liked playing music with Josh. If it happens, It'd be up to him. You know what I mean? Give me a phone call.

Rock My Monkey: So basically the friendship-

Nick Oliveri: I'd say yeah. Because it's fun to play music with the dude.

Rock My Monkey: So the friendship is definitely on the way to being mended, and if you guys were in the same room it'd be a cool thing?

Nick Oliveri: Yeah.

Rock My Monkey: Right on. Now, what do you think Nick brought to the CD as a co-producer that would not have been there otherwise?

Nick Oliveri: Nick, actually, what's great about Nick is he, the first time they ever did anything over at Studio 606 that was like live takes. I recorded a lot of the music with the guys in the band. Ben Thomas and Ben Perrier with Nick at Studio 606. And it was great. We went to tapes, and we did a bunch of tapes of songs. Not too many where it killed us. But I think, you know, I don't know, man. He kind of just let us do our thing. He brought his feel of tones and shit, and helped me find what I was looking for with tones. I'm pretty simple when it comes to stuff like that. I need more lows, I need more, I need the bass up, and I'm not real good with turning the knobs and stuff. Someone like Nick knows where to go for stuff like that. It's a no brainer. He's quick, and fast, and he's fun to hang out with. I think he brought a cool vibe of mellowness to it, you know, like, you know, relaxed and play the tunes, you know? And I think the more jammy songs came out cooler at Studio 606 than at Donner & Blitzen in Arcadia where I finished the record. I think songs like "Like A Bomb" or stuff like that — I can't think of something off the top of my head. It's been awhile since I listened to the record. Stuff like that actually I think came out cooler at Studio 606 then the studio in Arcadia where I finished the guitars and stuff like that out there.

Rock My Monkey: Do you ever get tired of people asking about any potential KYUSS reunion?

Nick Oliveri: Heh. That's another one up to Josh, bro.

Rock My Monkey: Really? Okay.

Nick Oliveri: Yeah. Well, Josh is, he was there with John [Garcia]. John and him basically did KYUSS for all four full-lengths and the EP on Man's Ruin. Those are the two guys that did all the records. I did the first two. Scott Reeder came in and he is a better bass player, and that's the reason why — he shreds. Okay, fair enough. But he did the last two. But John and Josh and Brant did the first, he did three of them, and then Alfredo did drums on the last one. So it's one of those things for me where it's Josh and John. Without John singing, there's no KYUSS, and without Josh playing guitar and who is the main songwriter for KYUSS, with Brant Bjork the first three, those are the guys. That's, if Josh is involved, it would have to be up to Josh to make that happen.

Iced Earth Drummer Talks About Illegal Downloading

Adam Ortiz of Loucifer Speaks recently conducted an interview with ICED EARTH drummer Brent Smedley. A couple of excerpts from the chatfollow:

Loucifer Speaks: How did you get into ICED EARTH?

Smedley: "How I got into ICED EARTH is a rather interesting story. It goes something like this...I had heard of ICED EARTH and seen an ad for Century Media Records (the band's record label at the time) in a magazine. I sent for a free catalog for Century Media. A few days after the catalog arrived I received a Century Media sampler CD which had one song from most of their top bands on it. I believe it was the second Century Media sampler they made. Anyhow the CD had the song 'Last December' on it. I liked the song so much that I put the intro from it on my answering machine. I was referred to the band by a mutual friend by the name of Steve Woodham from Alabama. So when Jon Schaffer called me to ask me about auditioning he heard his song on my answering machine...I"ll never forget that message. It seemed it was fate for me to play in ICED EARTH. I was the next to the last person to audition, they had me play 'Last December' and 'Dante's Inferno'. The rest, as they say, is history."

Loucifer Speaks: The promo version of "Framing Armageddon" was leaked some time ago. How do you feel about people downloading albums before they are officially released?

Smedley: "As to how I feel about downloading of music. I think it is a crime and a shame that so much theft of music goes on today. If you were a master painter would you give your paintings away? Or a builder, would you build your homes or offices for free? Downloading has reduced the music industry by 20%. I think it is one of the biggest problems facing the music business in modern times."

Loucifer Speaks: Do you have formal training, as in did you study at institutions and clinics?

Smedley: "I took four and a half years of private drum lessons, a year and a half of marimba lessons (a mallet percussion instrument), I played in school band my last 4 years of high school including marching band, symphonic band, percussion ensemble, and jazz band. I also studied music at the University Of North Florida, taking drumset and percussion lessons, and percussion ensemble.

Loucifer Speaks: Do you have any goals that you want to accomplish with the band now?

Smedley: "Goals I wish to accomplish with the band would consist of making the best records we can possibly make, giving the best live shows we can and staying true to ourselves, the music we love to play, and to stay true to the fans."

Sodom To Tour U.S. In April/May

Long-running German thrashers SODOM are planning on embarking on a short U.S. tour in late April/early May 2008. No further details are currently available.

SODOM played a special 25th anniversary set at Wacken Open Air festival, which took place August 2-4 in Wacken, Germany. The 120-minute performance kicked off with four songs from the band's latest, self-titled album, after which the group was joined by several ex-members for a set of songs that have rarely or never before been played live. SODOM then closed the gig with five more classics.

SODOM's new album, "The Final Sign of Evil", is scheduled for release on September 28 in Germany and October 1 in the rest of Europe via SPV Records. A North American release date has not yet been announced. The CD will feature re-recordings of the material from the German thrashers' classic first EP, "In the Sign of Evil", plus no less than seven bonus tracks, all of which were originally written during the "In the Sign of Evil" era or earlier but were never officially released. As a special bonus, the album will feature return appearances by the group's original drummer Chris Dudek (a.k.a. Witchhunter) and guitarist Josef "Peppi" Dominic (a.k.a. Grave Violator), both of whom were featured on the original 1984 EP.

The band's webmaster Toto, who produced the effort, previously stated about the upcoming CD, "The official name is 'The Final Sign of Evil', and follows the plan to make the 'In the Sign of Evil' a complete album. So the seven additional tracks are not a real bonus, because they fulfill an album, like it should [have done] back in 1984."

"The Final Sign of Evil" track listing:

01. The Sin Of Sodom *
02. Blasphemer **
03. Ashes To Ashes *
04. Witching Metal **
05. Sons Of Hell *
06. Burst Command 'til War **
07. Where Angels Die *
08. Sepulchral Voice **
09. Hatred Of The Gods *
10. Bloody Corpse *
11. Outbreak Of Evil **
12. Defloration *

* bonus tracks
** songs which were on the original version of "In The Sign Of Evil"

Lamb Of God DVD Goes Platinum

LAMB OF GOD's website has been updated to include the following press release:

Make no mistake about it, Grammy nominated Lamb Of God are the reigning supreme rulers of American Heavy Metal. Now, Lamb Of God announce Killadelphia DVD goes PLATINUM!!!

The band celebrate receiving the platinum award for Killadelphia DVD while they currently deliver their unruly brand of heavy metal as direct support to OZZY OSBOURNE on the mainstage at OZZFest.

“If you thought METALLICA’s Some Kind Of Monster was candid, wait until you get your metal-loving mitts on Killadelphia.” - Long Island Press.

Lamb Of God’s Killadelphia highlights every facet of the bands unforgiving live performance recorded from two unforgettable "Sold Out" concerts at Philadelphia’s legendary Trocadero. This blistering live documentation features lead singer Randy Blythe’s storming vocals, the buzzsaw guitar slaughter of both Willie Adler and Mark Morton along with the powerhouse rhythm section of Chris Adler (drums) with John Campbell (bass).

Killadelphia boasts live versions of: 'Laid To Rest', 'Hourglass', 'As The Palaces Burn', 'Now You’ve Got Something To Die For', '11th Hour', 'Terror & Hubris', 'Ruin', 'Omerta', 'Pariah', 'The Faded Line', 'Bloodletting', 'The Subtle Art Of Murder & Persuasion', 'Vigil', 'What I’ve Become', and the utterly classic 'Black Label'; which inspires crowds worldwide to part seas for the infamous ‘wall of death’.

Drummer, Chris Adler states “In today's age of gimmicks, lies and faux reality trying to make celebrities out of everyone with a few dollars, it was important for us to not stage or hype up a damn thing - to simply show LAMB OF GOD on the road; the good times, the bad times and one hell of a show- and for that stripped down, no-holds-barred approach to be received this well certainly flatters us, but also continues to make a dent in the industry full of fakes and talentless image. It's nice to know that we didn't have to be anything other than ourselves to achieve such success with this DVD, but the real praise should go to our friends and fans who picked up Killadelphia and in doing so have sent a message to the powers that be that we are sick of the over hyped, fake "real world" being shoved down our throats - we are all ready for the honest, genuine bands and music to take center stage once again.

As a band we are extremely humbled by this achievement - it's rare that a band like ourselves receives this honor. Again, we pass along the thanks and praise to those of you who picked up Killadelphia. This is an accomplishment that we share with all of you. Thank you, congratulations and cheers! See you all soon - Stay Metal 'till then!”

Exodus Streaming New Track Online

Bay area thrash pioneers EXODUS have updated their MySpace page to stream their track 'Riot Act'. Check it out at this location.

Set to go into production this month, Exodus will be shooting a video for 'Riot Act', off their upcoming new album The Atrocity Exhibition: Exhibit A, slated for release in North America on October 23.

The video director for 'Riot Act' will be none other than Jon Schnepp. Known most recently for his work on Metalocalypse (an animated program about DETHKLOK, the world’s most popular death metal band) on Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim, the show has been described as 'Spinal Tap meets Scooby Doo meets Norway.' Schnepp is responsible for the character design of the five Dethklok members, directs the majority of the Metalocalypse episodes for each season, and works closely with the show’s co-creators/writers Brendon Small and Tommy Blacha.

Exodus guitarist Gary Holt has this to say about the shoot: “Having the opportunity to work with Jon on our video for ‘Riot Act’ is going to be amazing. Having just recently done our own guest appearance on Metalocalypse, we went out on a limb and asked Jon if he'd shoot our video. When he said yes, we were stoked to say the least. The ideas that he's come up with promise to make this our best video ever! I usually hate making videos, but this time I'm actually excited about it! It will be unique, and of course, it will be heavy!”

Nuclear Blast will release The Atrocity Exhibition: Exhibit A on October 28th in Europe. Produced at Sharkbite Studios in Oakland, CA by Andy Sneap (MEGADETH, MACHINE HEAD, NEVERMORE, ARCH ENEMY), it features the following tracks: 'A Call To Arms', 'Riot Act', 'Funeral Hymn', 'Children Of A Worthless God', 'As It Was, As It Soon Shall Be', 'The Atrocity Exhibition', 'Iconoclasm', 'The Garden Of Bleeding', 'Bedlam 123'.

Otep Signs To Koch Records, Sets Release Date

KOCH Records has announced a new revenue-sharing partnership with OTEP. The deal is a multi-album, worldwide deal.

The first release under this new agreement is the band's highly anticipated new full-length album, "The Ascension," slated for release on Tuesday, October 30th, 2007. The Ascension is their third full-length album, and the band challenged itself to avoid clichés and classifications and find a new landscape of sound and vision. "We said 'genre limits and music fads be damned, let's write music that is important to us and that motivates us," explains Otep Shamaya, the band's namesake and driving force. "I wanted to write songs we believe in and let nothing stop us from building the album we want to make."

Produced by Dave Fortman (Mudvayne, Evanescence), The Ascension is a "heavy duty masterpiece" as Harder Beat calls it. Metal Edge states, "The Ascension finds the band in top-form." And Blender offers, "Otep's third album mostly stays within the realm of four-horsemen drum attacks, wrist twisting riffage and dark-lit industrial eeriness."

Otep Shamaya adds, "We've been called the renegades of art-rock and it's invigorating and empowering to now have the support of a label that understands and embraces the explosive trends of technology and fortifies our mission of breaking the mold of the mundane. This unification of KOCH and OT3P embraces the new business model for an artist/label partnership that destroys the fossilized thinking that has decimated the music industry. I am excited and honored to be partnering with such an amazingly forward thinking label and look forward to the many conquests and creative successes our collective future now holds."

Look for the band to tour soon in support of The Ascension with band members Brian, Aaron and eVil J. The band just completed a National tour with Static-X this past summer and is set to begin touring in support of the album in the very near future.

Bob Frank, President of KOCH Records states, "OTEP are positioned to be the biggest band in metal. This partnership gives us all the ability to truly work together and make it happen. With Otep Shamaya, Zen Media Group and KOCH metal god Scott Givens on point, we have an unbeatable team."

Scott Givens, VP of Metal adds, "We feel we have perfect vehicle for Otep and all her creative visions. From musical to visual to spoken word we could not be happier that she has chosen Koch to be her partner as she continues her already amazing career."

OTEP is managed by the Zen Media Group (HellYeah, Mudvayne, Bloodsimple).

You can check out some previews of Otep's new material on their MySpace page.

Ministry Frontmans Cover Album To Surface In April

Al Jourgensen's band MINISTRY may be releasing their final studio album — "The Last Sucker" — on September 18 on 13th Planet/Megaforce Records, but that doesn't mean Jourgensen is saying good-bye to the inside of a recording studio. As a matter of fact, Jourgensen plans to spend significantly more time in the studio doing what he loves best — collaborating. And collaboration is at the root of "Cover Up", a soon-to-be-released album of some of Al's personal favorite songs being recorded by MINISTRY & CO-CONSPIRATORS in his El Paso, TX compound, 13th Planet Studios. MINISTRY & CO-CONSPIRATORS' "Cover Up" is expected to street in April 2008.

In addition to core MINISTRY members guitarist Sin Quirin (REVOLTING COCKS) and bassist Paul Raven (KILLING JOKE, PRONG, MOB RESEARCH), Jourgensen enlisted an impressive group of co-conspirators for "Cover Up" — FEAR FACTORY frontman Burton C. Bell (also of ASCENSION OF THE WATCHERS) sings on THE ROLLING STONES' "Under My Thumb", Tony Campos (bass) and Wayne Static (vocals) from STATIC-X are on THE BEATLES' "I Want You (She's So Heavy)", and PRONG's Tommy Victor (vocals) and MOUNTAIN's Leslie West (guitar) do justice to MOUNTAIN's classic "Mississippi Queen". "Cover Up" will also include MINISTRY's cover of THE DOORS' "Roadhouse Blues" (which can also be found on "The Last Sucker"), as well as RAM JAM's "Black Betty", DEEP PURPLE's "Space Truckin'", LOUIS ARMSTRONG's "Wonderful World" and "Radar Love" by GOLDEN EARRING. Additional featured artists, including CHEAP TRICK's Robin Zander (vocals) and Rick Nielsen (guitar), and tracks are in the works.

"It's a work in progress," states Jourgensen, "based on who's on tour and comin' through town. It keeps everything spontaneous. By now, everyone knows if they're droppin' by the studio, I'm gonna put them to work. I've got a few more surprises up my sleeve for this one.

"I'm just waiting on a few more return calls," laughs Jourgensen, "Seems like lately if you visit the 13th Planet compound, you'll end up on 'Cover Up' or I'll end up signing you to my label — or both," sites Jourgensen in reference to 13th Planet Records recent signing of Victor's PRONG and Bell's ASCENSION OF THE WATCHERS).

After 10 albums and 27 years (including a 2006 Grammy nomination for "Lieslieslies" from the "Rio Grande Blood" album, and a Grammy nod in 2005 for "The Great Satan" from "Rantology", Jourgensen has decided that the MINISTRY garage is ready to close its doors, but the revolving 13th Planet Studio doors remain open for Jourgensen's collaborations and also for upcoming new signings for his 13th Planet imprint. "The Last Sucker" is MINISTRY's 11th — and absolutely final — studio offering. "The Last Sucker" is the third in an unrelenting and uber-critical CD trilogy aimed at exposing the plethora of foils, failures and fabrications perpetrated by the George W. Bush administration.

"The Last Sucker" was produced and recorded this past spring by Jourgensen at his 13th Planet compound and sees the return of "Rio Grande Blood" musicians Victor on guitars, Raven on bass, with newcomer guitarist Quirin. Jourgensen and his engineer John "Bixby" Bilberry handled all the drum programming. In addition, Bell makes a vocal appearance on "Die In A Crash", as well as the album's final two songs, "End of Days" Parts One and Two.

Assault Charge Against BMTH Singer Dropped

A charge of common assault against BRING ME THE HORIZON frontman Oli Sykes has been dropped by Britain's crown prosecution service on grounds of not enough evidence to provide a realistic prospect of conviction.

The 20-year-old singer was charged with common assault on April 8 this year after a 26-year-old woman he met at Rock City, Nottingham, accused him of splashing urine on her dress while she was present on their tour bus.

The band is currently in the USA, tearing up venues, three weeks into a 10-week tour. They are back in the U.K. for their headline tour beginning November 22. 2008 follows up with a European headline tour in January and a six-week USA headline in February and March.

BRING ME THE HORIZON's first-ever promotional video, for the track "Pray for Plagues", can be viewed below. The song comes off the group's debut album, "Count Your Blessings", which was released in North America on August 14 via Earache Records.

In the seemingly short span of three years since their formation, BRING ME THE HORIZON has "accomplished more in that time than most bands do in 10," according to a press release. "In 2006, BRING ME THE HORIZON was the recipient of a Kerrang! award for 'Best British Newcomer' and held steady on MySpace's top 100 list of most played bands. BRING ME THE HORIZON was only one of two U.K. acts to chart in the MySpace top 100 (the other being COLDPLAY). In addition, they've toured with bands such as BLEEDING THROUGH and KILLSWITCH ENGAGE and performed a show-stealing set at the U.K.'s Download Festival."

BRING ME THE HORIZON was licensed to Earache through the band's U.K. label Visible Noise.

Machine Head Drummer Comments On Replacement

As previously reported on September 2, MACHINE HEAD has confirmed that it has recruited Brandon Sigmund from fellow San Francisco Bay Area metal band HOSTILITY to handle the bass parts on the group's upcoming North American tour. Sigmund is the temporary replacement for regular MACHINE HEAD bassist Adam Duce, who was forced to sit out the trek after suffering a broken leg while dirt biking in Redding, CA. Also joining the band onstage to reproduce Adam's backing vocals will be Jared MacEachern of tourmates SANCTITY.

"We're really stoked to have found guys as killer as Brandon and Jared to help us through this situation," MACHINE HEAD drummer Dave McClain said in a statement. "We can't wait to get out there and give our fans in the States the headlining show they've been waiting for, especially with bands like ARCH ENEMY, THROWDOWN and SANCTITY on the bill".

Duce's leg is healing normally and he's currently on track to rejoin the band for the rest of their 2007 tour schedule, starting with their Loudpark 07 date in Japan on October 20.

HOSTILITY's video for the song "None for All" can be viewed below. The clip was filmed late last year at the Phoenix Theater in Petaluma, California with director David Kluger.

"None for All" comes off HOSTILITY's critically acclaimed debut album "Uncompromised" (The Pen/Voltaic Records), which was mixed by producer Colin Richardson (SLIPKNOT, MACHINE HEAD, TRIVIUM, SEPULTURA). Richardson previously stated about the CD, "If you want ultimate heaviness, BUY THIS ALBUM!" More...

Nightwish Announce U.K. Dates And Q&A

NIGHTWISH's new Nightmail Q&A featuring keyboardist/founder Tuomas Holopainen is now online. Following is a brief excerpt:

Q: Why did you choose a singer like Anette to replace Tarja? Don't you think that the vocalist of NW should be an opera singer? Don't you think that you're changing the idea of the band this way?

Tuomas: The idea of the band was originally to do just acoustic campfire music. So the idea was already changed 10 years ago. Also, Nightwish quit with the operatic vocals already in the Century Child album, and ever since. People complain that the opera is now gone with Anette in the band, I think it has already been gone for the past five years.

A band should never be a prisoner of a format. This is a change all the members in the band wanted to do. You always need to follow your heart in what you want to do, otherwise you'll end up being a whore. Nightwish is not a music style, it's five people who do the kind of music they want, the way they want, with the tools they have. Selfish, but honest."

In other news, Nightwish have announced the following live dates forthe UK:

March
25 - Astoria - London, UK
29 - Carling Academy - Birmingham, UK
30 - Carling Academy - Newcastle, UK
31 - ABC1 - Glasgow, Scotland

April
2 - Mandela Hall - Belfast, Ireland
3 - Vicar Street - Dublin, Ireland
4 - Academy 2 - Manchester, UK
