Usurper Founder Explains Reason For Split

Guitarist/founder Rick Scythe of Chicago's USURPER has issued the following statement regarding the band's decision to split up:

"As some of you may have heard, the band I formed over 13 years ago is now over. I wrote nearly all the music and most of the lyrics. I came up with the lyrical and artwork concepts, so I feel I owe a detailed account of the life and death of USURPER. I will just try to explain things from my perspective.

"Make no mistake, this decision to end USURPER came down to me. I slammed the final nail in the USURPER coffin and this is the eulogy so to speak.

"When myself and General Diabolical Slaughter formed USURPER in 1993, the idea was to write songs and form a band that brought back the true spirit of mid-80's thrash metal, yet do it in a way that was NOT tongue-in-cheek nor simply re-hashing. As the years went on our sound developed. Thrash metal was and would always be the core of our sound, but we also had dark/haunting elements from day one which came to a peak on our 1998 album, 'Skeletal Season'. More...

Tommy Lee Comments On Kid Rock Fight

Soon after his off-camera scuffle Sunday night with Kid Rock, MÖTLEY CRÜE drummer Tommy Lee gave "The Insider" his side of the story while hanging out at the Noir nightclub at the Luxor in Las Vegas.

"I was minding myself and then he goes and punches me on the cheek," claims Tommy. "I was trying to be the bigger man, but he was acting childish."

He added that after Kid came up and punched him, he "was ready to go in the alley and kick his ass. "I was about to put Kid in the emergency room when security grabbed me," says Tommy. "They said, 'If you move, we will break your arms.'"

Tommy went on to express why Kid probably acted the way he did, saying, "This is what people do when they have shitty albums and their careers are going down the drain."

Kid Rock has a new album coming out October 9.

Meanwhile, Officer Bill Cassell confirmed to "The Insider" that Kid Rock was cited for misdemeanor battery for throwing a punch at Tommy Lee during Alicia Keys' performance at the "MTV Video Music Awards". Kid Rock will go to court in three to five weeks to enter a plea. Cassell said the maximum punishment would be a $500 fine and six months in jail.

Chthonic And Ensiferum Announce European Tour

Taiwanese extreme metalists CHTHONIC — fresh from a tour of duty with Ozzfest and currently in the midst of their first-ever North American headline shows, which precede a brief tour with CRADLE OF FILTH — have confirmed their first batch of fall European tour dates. They are as follows:

Nov. 09 - Hard Rock Hell Festival - Minehead, U.K.
Nov. 30 - Markthalle - Hamburg, Germany
Dec. 01 - Lindenpark - Potsdam, Germany
Dec. 02 - Alte Spinnerei - Glauchau, Germany
Dec. 04 - Bastard Club - Osnabruck, Germany
Dec. 06 - Romein - Leeuwarden, Holland
Dec. 07 - Biebob - Vosselaar, Belgium
Dec. 09 - Substage - Karlsruhe, Germany
Dec. 11 - Wigwam - Budapest, Hungary
Dec. 12 - Fleda - Brno, Czech Republic
Dec. 13 - Colos Saal - Aschaffenburg, Germany
Dec. 14 - Z7 - Pratteln, Switzerland
Dec. 15 - Hexentanz Festival - Illingen, Germany

All concerts in continental Europe will see CHTHONIC play alongside Finnish "heroic folk metal" warriors ENSIFERUM (Spinefarm Records). Additional performances — including the band's first-ever U.K. tour — will be announced shortly.

CHTHONIC will hold a press conference at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C. on Sept. 13, just hours before they play the nearby Jaxx nightclub in West Springfield, Virginia.

At the press conference, which will be moderated by Jaxx owner Jay Nedry, the band will discuss the message behind their current tour, which they've dubbed "UNlimited" to protest how the United Nations (UN) limits Taiwan's full participation as an independent country. The Washington Post and the International Herald Tribune, among others, have recently devoted lengthy features to the message behind the tour.

CHTHONIC will continue its historic "UNlimited" tour later this month, when it will perform its first headlining concerts in America.

"Ozzfest has been a great experience for CHTHONIC, but we're excited to perform for our fans for longer than 20 minutes," Freddy Lim stated.

In concert, CHTHONIC (pronounced "THON-ick") will continue to perform the tour's theme song, "UNlimited Taiwan", written and recorded this spring "to emphasize the 'UNlimited' potential of Taiwan and the Taiwanese people," Lim says. Like the tour — which kicked off in Taipei earlier this summer following the international re-release of 2002's "Relentless Recurrence" and last year's "A Decade On The Throne" two-CD/DVD live set — the song was named to protest how the United Nations (UN) limits Taiwan's full participation as an independent country. The Washington Post and the International Herald Tribune, among others, have recently devoted lengthy features to the message behind the tour.

With a new session of the United Nations General Assembly scheduled to open in New York on Sept. 18, many pro-Taiwan rallies will be held around the city in the days beforehand. To coincide with the UN session's kickoff — where Taiwan will once again petition to be formally recognized as an independent country, and not a Chinese province — CHTHONIC will hold a special "UNlimited New York" concert at Manhattan's Highline Ballroom, located less than three miles from the UN, on Sept. 16.

Because this is the group's third New York City concert in recent weeks, coming on the heels of an Aug. 21 performance with NILE and a Sept. 6 concert alongside KATATONIA, CHTHONIC has arranged for the Highline Ballroom to offer tickets for only $5 to anyone who redeems a ticket stub from one of their previous shows at the venue's box office. For everyone else, a $2 discount can be obtained by purchasing the tickets online at www.highlineballroom.com (enter "un4taiwan" in the access code field). Furthermore, the first 100 fans in the doors will receive a free set of CHTHONIC "paper dolls," which are sold in toy stores throughout Asia.

Wednesday 13 Involved In Car Accident

Wednesday 13 (ex-MURDERDOLLS singer) was involved in a car accident late last night (Sunday, September 9) as he was returning home from rehearsal in preparation for the upcoming BOURBON CROW tour (Wednesday 13's country project). According to a press release, the car flipped at least once, leaving Wednesday 13 with a broken collar bone and a fractured ankle. All BOURBON CROW dates will be cancelled at this time while Wednesday 13 recuperates.

Wednesday 13 had just finished recording his new solo CD, "Skeletons". Tentative songtitles set to appear on the CD include "From Here to the Hearse", "Dead Carolina", "All American Massacre" and "Not Another Teenage Anthem".

Wednesday 13 will tour the U.S. for the month of October and then head overseas for his "Fan Appreciation" tour in November.

As previously reported, Wednesday 13's video project "Weirdo-A-Go-Go" has been completed for a tentative February 2008 release. The show will feature the campy and morbid sense of humor that any fans of Wednesday 13 can expect. In the first two episodes, Wednesday 13 hosts clips and trailers of cheap horror flicks, along with performing schlocky but witty skits with his strange and wacky sidekicks. The program promises to resurrect the tradition of Saturday morning TV shows that Wednesday 13 grew up on — the random creations of Sid and Marty Krofft and Pee Wee's Playhouse mixed with the comedic approach of horror hosts Commander USA, Elvira, and Zacherely. The project, to be distributed by Horror High, LLC, was shot by Rafa of Core Entertainment, Inc. Rafa is most noted for the video and web site projects he has done for AVENGED SEVENFOLD, EVANESCENCE, ROB ZOMBIE, DISTURBED, STATIC-X and the Dimebag tribute bracelet.

Ensiferum Part Ways With Keyboardist

Finnish folk-influenced melodic death metal band ENSIFERUM has parted ways with keyboardist Meiju Enho. Meiju's statement regarding his decision to leave the group can be found below.

Dear friends,
I’ve now reached the moment in my life when I need to stay out of the battle. It’s time for somebody else to take my place in Ensiferum. These almost 6 years have been totally unforgettable but also rough. After giving my absolutely 100% to this music, playing and shows I now feel exhausted but happy; it has been worth it. Nevertheless, I feel now it’s time for me to head out for new adventures.

Carry on holding the sword! I feel deep gratitude to all fans and friends who have encouraged me during these years. I want to thank Markus, Sami, Janne and Pete for all those once-in-a-lifetime moments and the inspirational atmosphere there has always been. You’re like brothers to me.

I wish good luck to my follower and true warrior spirit to all our listeners.
As long as there’s good beer left in the world, you can never really give up.

- Meiju Enho
.

Emmi Silvennoinen from the band EXSECRATUS has filling in for Meiju since the beginning of this year and will continue to act as the live/session keyboard player for ENSIFERUM until further notice.

Fan-filmed video footage of ENSIFERUM's performance at the 21st edition of the Nummirock festival — which took place June 22-23 in Nummijärvi, Finland — can be viewed below.

ENSIFERUM recently entered the German chart at position No. 37 with its third album, "Victory Songs". The CD also debuted on the Finnish national chart at No. 6.

Dawn Of Azazel To Support Motorhead In New Zealand

New Zealand's most notable metal export DAWN OF AZAZEL has announced its first show since returning from a successful European tour in June. The band will support rock legends MOTÖRHEAD at their only New Zealand show in October.

Commented frontman Rigel Walshe: "Well, things have been uncharacteristically quiet in the DAWN OF AZAZEL camp lately. Since returning from a killer tour of Europe with IMMOLATION, KRISIUN, GRAVE and LENG TCH'E we have been hard at work on material for our next album. Progress has been great and we are fully confident this will represent the next stage of evolution in the sound of stronger, tighter and more focused DAWN OF AZAZEL. We anticipate this should be completed by the end of the year.

"In the meantime we are honoured to announce that we will be supporting yet another metal legend that we count amongst our influences, none other than the mighty MOTÖRHEAD on their only New Zealand show on October the 19th at New Plymouth's TSB Stadium. Shortly after this we shall be announcing our third Australian tour for 'Sedition' in support of one of extreme metal's strongest names."

DAWN OF AZAZEL's latest album, "Sedition", was re-released in September 2006 with a video bonus track and distributed through RED/Megaforce Records/MIC via Ibex Moon Records.

Fire Occurs During Skinlab Recording

SKINLAB bassist/vocalist Steev Esquivel checks in with the following studio update:

"Just got back from Day 2 of recording.

Things got off to a crazy start today... just as we were about to start tracking Snake's guitar cab caught on fire, almost burning down the house!!

Fuckin' crazy, we we're just kickin back about to start tracking, when Snake leaped up screaming 'fire, fire'!! Luckily we had some freshly bought Startbucks on hand to throw on the cab, just enough to grab it and carry it out before catching everything else on fire.

Crazy start, we all got a pretty good laugh at after the smoke cleared!!

After changing cabs and setting mic positions, thugs got back on track. Snake was able to complete his tracks for 'Face Of Aggression', getting super heavy tones that sounds amazing!! We decided to take a break continuing tomarrow to finish up guitar tracks and start getting bass tones.

Things are coming along great, this is sure to be the best sounding Skinlab recording yet. We're fuckin' stoked to get these new songs out, it's been a long time coming.

More updates soon."

Skinlab's new album is out later this year via Crash Music.

As previously reported, Century Media will be re-releasing the group's first album Bound, Gagged And Blindfolded, on October 2nd. The repackaged disc will feature never before seen video footage and pictures with liner notes from founding members Steev Esquivel and Mike Roberts along with new artwork and layout.

Iron Maiden Announce Christmas Card Competition

IRON MAIDEN's site has been updated with the following details regarding the band's annual Xmas card competition:

"You folks know the drill by now...

The last few years we've thrown the design of the official Iron Maiden xmas card open to you guys. This is the card that gets sent to FC members, to friends of the band... and to the last minute people we realise we've forgotten Each year, the standard has been amazingly high and we've had a real challenge agreeing on a winner.

So, we'd like you guys to do it again. Send us your designs - conforming to the specs below - and the winner will be picked by Rod, be printed and sent to loads of people. The winner will get a credit on the card and a personally signed photo from the band (as well as a t-shirt and maybe some other goodies).

Your design needs to be A5 size (about 21 by 15 cm) - it's up to you which way round it goes (portrait or landscape). The picture is entirely up to you.

Now here's the important stuff - as the design will be printed, you need to make sure you have a high-resolution image that you can send us if we choose your card. If you're hand painting or drawing, no problem, but if you're creating your design from scratch in Photoshop or whatever, please make sure you do it at 600dpi and not at the lower resolution you'd use for things that are going to be displayed only on a monitor. Keep the original in a very safe place, and send us a copy.

How To Submit Your Design...

Please send in your submissions as lower-resolution JPEG or GIF images - we don't need you to send the huge hi-res file until we choose the winner.

Please make sure that you name your file with your own name - eg. jimsmith.jpg - cos otherwise we get 200 files called 'maiden.jpg'!

Email you entries to us at webmaster@ironmaidenonlineclub.com, title your email 'XMAS CARD' and please make sure you include your contact details.

Closing date for entries is 5th October. Good luck!"

As previously reported, Maiden will headline the Metal Day at the Rock In Rio festival in Madrid and Lisbon as part of their recently announced Somewhere Back in Time Tour 2008. Apparently those are the only shows the band will do in Spain and Portugal.

In other news, Iron Maiden are all set to play a mega concert at the Universitario de Caracas Stadium as part of their 2008 World Tour. This is part of a series of Mega Shows that Caracas will have, other artists scheduled to play in March are the ROLLING STONES.

Primordial Finish Recording New Album

Vocalist Nemtheanga of the Irish pagan metal masters PRIMORDIAL has posted the following update on the group's official web site:

"So the new album ['To the Nameless Dead'] bar the mastering is done and dusted. We have to extend our utmost gratitude to Chris Fielding, who performed above and beyond the call of duty with the least amount of fuss any of us have ever encountered in the studio. And I think when the scene hears the rich, powerful, full and old-school sound from the album he is going to become much in demand. And why not?…secondly also gratitude to Dave, who made us feel more then welcome in the valleys and I think added some small part of spiritual presence to proceedings. We will be back.

"So yes, you read it, the album contains seven new tracks and near 55 minutes of new PRIMORDIAL, and yes, we know all bands say this, but I can honestly say we have never been happier with how an album sounds. It is as I stated rich and powerful, it has a real fucking drum sound and you can smell the amps burning into overdrive. And as a singer I can say Chris pushed me further then I've been before with the vocals and stark sound from the last album has been replaced with something far more immediate and effective. And the songs? To our ears at least this album sounds more focused, there is less flab on the songs. They are more direct in their intentions and there is a defiant vibe to the album that I for one did not expect but there it is in all its shameless glory. Fans of the band won't be disappointed that is for sure. The mainstream might take notice or they might not. Who gives a fuck? We certainly don't. Album number six and no compromise…not then, not now, not ever.

"Our show at Party.San Open Air was a solid seven outta ten but I think having been up all night the night previous to be at Dublin airport at 5 am really robbed us of a lot of our punch. Not to mention being picked up at 5 am the following morning to wait 14 hours in the airport. Sometimes in my most zombified moments I wonder is it all worth it, but then again I also think I've seen demons when I've had four hours sleep in three days. Tells its own story, really. Anyway, zombies and demons be damned we will be back. We are confirmed for the Arnhem Metal Meeting in the Netherlands and also the Winterfest in Cork. First time in Arnhem in three years I think and Cork in five or six….

"So the day draws nearer. The artwork is being finalized and the branding irons are in the fire."

More Info on The Ocean's Upcoming Release

'Precambrian' is the follow-up to 2005's highly acclaimed 'Aeolian' album. After more than six months of daily work on this immense project, comprising almost 90 minutes of music dispersed over two very distinct and different discs that see the band exploring entirely new musical territories while frequently employing well-tried oceanic elements, it becomes obvious that the outcome is THE OCEAN's musically most advanced and most versatile album to date, combining a raw hardcore-approach with huge orchestrations, subtle electronic textures and immense harmonic density and dynamic width.

The story of the making of this double-album is a chase around the globe. It begins in Northern Finland, where drums and most guitars were tracked, in total isolation, in a remote wooden barn in March 2007; it continues at the band's own Oceanland studios in Berlin, and concludes, after detours to Northern Sweden, Belgium, the Netherlands, Los Angeles and Seattle, where vocal contributions were recorded, on the East Coast of the US, where the album was mixed by Andrew Schneider (Unsane, Pelican, Cave In, Made Out of Babies) in New York City, and mastered by Nick Zampiello (Converge, Isis, The Red Chord, Unsane).

On the vocal front, the band's long search for a new full-time vocalist to follow in Meta's footsteps was put to an end with the addition of Mike Pilat, who will move from the UK to Berlin soon to join the band full-time as additional guitarist, percussionist and main vocalist, together with Nico Webers. Mike's qualities as a bass-player could already be witnessed on the band's recent tour supporting THE BLACK DAHLIA MURDER all over Europe. His characteristic voice and incredible range of vocal styles are one aspect that really distinguishes this double-album, and it becomes evident that Mike did not just follow in Meta's footsteps, but enabled the band to grow and venture further into unknown and exciting waters.

Apart from that, some old and new guests are appearing on the album, including Caleb Scofield (Cave In, Zozobra, Old Man Gloom), Nate Newton (Converge, Doomriders), Dwid Hellion (Integrity), Tomas Hallbom (Breach), Eric Kalsbeek (Textures) and musicians from the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra.

Precambrian is a geological term that refers to the first chapter in the evolution of the earth. THE OCEAN's 'Precambrian' is composed of a mini-CD with 22 minutes playing time entitled »Hadean/Archaean«, and a full-length CD with 62 minutes playing time, entitled »Proterozoic«, both referring to successive geological eons within the Precambrian. The songs are divided into 5 subordinate eras, with the song-titles carrying the names of subordinate geological periods. More...

Eyewitness Report Of Kid Rock VS Tommy Lee Fight

The Associated Press is reporting that Kid Rock and Tommy Lee tussled in the audience at the "MTV Video Music Awards" on Sunday night. MTV VJ Sway said during the post-show that he saw Kid Rock walk up to the MÖTLEY CRÜE drummer, who was sitting next to Diddy, and "deck him." The incident was confirmed by Palms Hotel and Casino public relations representative Larry Fink. Both Lee and Kid Rock are ex-husbands of Pamela Anderson, who was a presenter at the show and delivered her lines from atop a table in the audience. Although it wasn't clear whether the two rockers were fighting over something related to Anderson, it was hard to imagine another scenario.

Another eyewitness, rap producer Rich Nice, said although Kid Rock threw the only blows that landed — a backhand slap and a punch — Tommy Lee was the instigator.

"It looked like Tommy Lee initiated it because Kid Rock was ignoring him," said Nice, who was two tables away. "And Tommy Lee kind of antagonized him. And then when Tommy Lee stood up, it looked a little weird, like 'Yo, what?'"

"When Tommy stands up is when Kid hit him the first time with a backhand," Nice continued. "And then Tommy Lee looked like he was trying to get at him to aggressively retaliate and then Kid Rock hits Tommy Lee again — bong. And then security grabs Tommy Lee in a headlock and pulls him off."

It's notable that security guards let Kid Rock stay for the rest of the show while Lee was dragged out.

We're asking fans in both those cities to phone their respective radio stations and request 'Get Up!' to radio. In Kitchener it's KOOL FM at 514-884-4470 and in Thunder Bay it's The Giant at 807-344-2000. Then on September 29th we're in Port Elgin at the Provisa Club, as part of a 94.5 The Bull Presents. You can only win tickets to this gig. To request the song phone: 519-357-1310. We're on heavy rotation here, let's keep it going with lots of requests!

Now that summer is over, we will be aggressively looking for dates for the upcoming six months. The CD is just starting to kick in and we're all hoping that 2008 is going to be our best year yet. Our goal next year will be to return to Europe and to play more US dates. In the past couple of years we've done a couple of runs south. Over the past two years we played Florida, Ohio, and New York State and coming up in October we have dates in Wisconsin and Minnesota. I've talked to Tom Mathers from Perris about pushing us to get on next year's Rocklahoma and also about the possibility of putting together some Texas dates. Texas was the state that broke Helix and we had a strong following there for many years. I'm also talking with agents/promoters about getting Helix back over to Europe. A couple of weeks ago Sanctuary (our European record company) was bought out by Universal. Steve Hammonds, who signed Helix to the label, has been made president of Sanctuary Division under the Universal label. This could turn out to be a very good thing for us, as the company has been somewhat in limbo for about a year. We've been getting a fair number of orders for the new CD from Europe, and excellent reviews from the European press, especially on Sleazemetal.com (Sweden), Strutter Magazine (Germany), and This Is Rock (Spain). Steve Price of ARFM Radio and Total Rock Radio, (both from the UK) and Heavy Generations from France have all been giving us airplay. On Monday I'll be interviewed by telephone by Pierre from Heavy Generations for an interview to be played at a later date. C'est la vie!"
