Napalm Death Campaigns In Bristol

When it comes to Napalm Death, they really are a band that needs no introduction. Pioneers, perhaps even inventors depending on who you ask, of grindcore, bringing together metal heads and punks for well over thirty years and always remaining true to their principles, Napalm Death are truly deserving of the often overused tag, "legends." One of the reasons that they've remained so popular is their live shows, in which they easily connect with the crowd and perform with such energy that they still inspire young fans to get on stage themselves. A Napalm Death show always feels like an event too, as often they put together an amazing package of bands that fit well together but still display a good variety, such is the case on their current "Campaign For Musical Destruction" tour, which on Tuesday the 7th of March, made it's first British stop in Bristol.

The best way to open an event is with with a bang and if ever there was a band that brings the boom, it's Escuela Grind. For some reason, the band seems to attract controversy regarding their genre and image but, for lack of a better phrase, I don't understand why. From the first note, the quartet are a blast (I promise that's the last of the explosions synonyms,) and they're so much fun. Vocalist Katerina Economou is a force of nature, leading the charge as the band treated those who arrived early to their mix of hardcore, grindcore, death metal and powerviolence. I'm still a relative newcomer to the band so I can't list every song they played, but "Cliffhanger" was a definite highlight. Escuela Grind crafted an instant connection with the crowd, joking with them, receiving positive responses to their short statements regarding social issues (a subject we'll be revisiting later in this review) and just generally being great to be around. They're not just impressive live, they're quite frankly amazing. I can't wait to see them again. This was their first show in Britain and they're more than welcome to come back any time. More...

Hangman's Chair Debuts New Digital Single

As they prepare for their extensive European tour with Igorrr, French doom metal visionaries Hangman's Chair reveal a previously unreleased gem in the form of new single "Spleenwise." Clocking in at over six minutes, "Spleenwise" bears the trademark features of Hangman's Chair, as it combines dark, brooding atmosphere with sombre melodies.

Hangman's Chair stated about "Spleenwise":
"'Laugh at everything, sad sex and poor decisions. Silence is addictive.'
Spleenwise is a neologism to express our state of mind towards everything that surrounds us: sit around, watch the world burn and appreciate the spleen.
Plus, this song is a link between the past and the future, a track written many moons ago that closes the A Loner chapter, as it is the last remaining song of the studio sessions."

Recently, Hangman's Chair's latest album "A Loner" celebrated its first anniversary. The band's Nuclear Blast debut was released on February 11th, 2022. A Loner is available in various formats. Order your copy here: https://hangmanschair.bfan.link/a-loner.ema

Last week, the band released a portrait video about the band's background and inspirations in cooperation with Radio Metal. You can watch the video below. More...

Trespass To Release New Album In May

Five years after "Footprints In The Rock," NWOBHM unsung heroes Trespass are back with a superb new album entitled "Wolf At The Door." Encompassing issues and subjects close to their hearts - especially environmental themes - the album were written by founding member, guitar player and vocalist Mark Sutcliffe at his home studio, being later recorded at Crooks Hall Studios, all in the wilds of Suffolk. Nigel Palmer (Raging Speedhorn, Satan’s Empire) then polished altogether in Lowland Masters.

This typical British environment helped Trespass maintain their NWOBHM signature twin-guitar sound, while having a drive and energy in the rhythm section that transports them right back into the 20s. The artwork, by Mark Wilkinson (Iron Maiden, Judas Priest) put the final touch in a release that won’t disappoint the old-school fans, as well as new ones.

"Wolf At The Door" will be released on LP (black vinyl, limited to 500), CD and digital formats via From The Vaults on May 26th, 2023. Pre-orders available here.

A new digital single from the album, entitled "Daggers Drawn," will be released next week. More...
