King Diamond As Comfy As Old Boots
King Diamond has revealed to BW&BK that he's hoping to have retro Mercyful Fate and King Diamond DVDs released sometime in the future. The material, according to Diamond, is something "not even bootleg tape traders have seen."
Diamond says he been sent rare footage that has never circulated, including Mercyful Fate performances from 1982 and some of the first live King Diamond solo performances.
"I'm going to go through the 35 tapes soon and hand-pick the bits I like. Then I'm going to have a meeting with Brian Slagel (Metal Blade founder/president) to see if he's interested in releasing the DVDs."
When told that collectors will probably salivate at the prospect of these DVDs being released, Diamond was optimistic that the material will also appeal to more casual fans. "Some people don't trade bootlegs, it's not their thing," he says. "But they can also have fun watching these old, rare shows."
Hammerfall Confirmed For U.K.'s Bloodstok 2005
Hammerfall guitarist Oscar Dronjak has posted the following message on the band's web site:
"It is with great pride and pleasure I can announce the first confirmed live show for Hammerfall next year: Bloodstock 2005 in Derby, U.K.! On September 2nd, we will return to English soil for only our second appearance ever. Headlining the Friday's festivities, we will bring the full show on a large stage, presenting our vision of heavy metal to the British Isles.
"This makes me feel especially happy, as I was pretty much solely responsible for us not making it to last year's festival (the motorcycle accident, remember?). This time, I promise you, there will be no cancellation. In fact, I guaran-damn-tee it! More concerts are going to be announced in the next months, and they will be posted here as they are confirmed.
"In more contemporary news: the studio work is progressing very well. We have begun with the guitar melodies and the solos will follow shortly. If you are interested, check out the diary elsewhere on this site. I am reporting things as they happen, complete with pictures. 'Til next time, in the immortal words of Joe Dirt: keep on keeping on!"

Dragonland New Album Samples Posted Online
Dragonland , the Gothenburg, Sweden-based melodic metal sextet, have uploaded five one-minute audio clips from their third album, "Starfall", at this location.
Commented guitarist Olof Mörck: "These five samples we've chosen are just a small tip of the iceberg of 'Starfall', although we think the new direction of our music and our new sound will be thoroughly evident in listening to them. The true diversity of this album, with songs ranging from '80s hard rock style through heavy Soilwork-ish tunes, to Arabian soundscapes, will only reveal itself through a full listening of the new album. Enjoy!"
The follow-up to 2002's "Holy War", "Starfall" was recorded at Tom Englund's (Evergrey) Division One Studios in Sweden with Englund producing. An October 25 release through Century Media Records is expected. The Japanese edition of the album, due on October 27 via King Records, will include a bonus track, a cover of X-Japan's "Rusty Nail".

Such A Surge To Release New EP And Album
German Crossover band Such a Surge is currently working on the follow-up record of "Rotlicht" (2003) in the former EMI Studios in Köln-Ehrenfeld, Germany, together with producer Wolfgang Stach. On January 10th 2005, an EP shall be released, followed by the complete new album on April 11th. All in all, about 16 songs will be recorded, 8 of them are already finished.
The band about the new material:
The record will be different from "Rotlicht," because Lutz [Buch] has a complete other style as guitarist and songwriter than Dennis [Graef] who left the band last year. But don't worry, you'll be surprised but still be able to recognize us.
There's no real feature on the album thus far, but we wrote a song together with our friend and colleague 'Bosse' from Braunschweig. The title of the song is "Mein Tag" [="My Day"] and it may sound similar to older stuff like "Silver Surge" or "Koma2002." Other new songs like "Überfall" [="Raid"], "O.K." or "Crash Test Dummie" will be hard tracks that you have to listen to very loud. In turn, "Alles was mir fehlt" [="Everything I Miss"] is a slow, spheric and brute sounding song. So all in all, it's again a big and variegated mixture, made out of everything that comes to our minds.

Shadows Fall Singer Wants To Retain Control
Shadows Fall singer Brian Fair recently spoke to the FourteenG.net about the impressive commercial success of the group's latest release, "The War Within," and the band's current standing in the metal scene, among other topics.
Several excerpts from the interview follow:
FourteenG.net: How do you feel about [being named "Best Underground Metal Band" in Metal Hammer magazine]? Do you want to stay underground? And if so, do you think you will be able to maintain that status with the early success of the latest release?
Brian Fair: "I don't know, we'll see! That's the whole thing, it's kinda hard to describe what is the 'underground' anymore. You've got bands that I consider to be non-mainstream bands selling over 100,000 records so it's kinda weird! [Chuckles accompanied by bewildered expression] And you have bands on major labels that are still definitely not commercial bands whether it's Hatebreed or Lamb of God or even bands like Poison the Well or Thursday. So I think all of the rules have changed I think 'underground' is much more of an approach or an attitude. We keep it that way, we are still really DIY as far as our career, and we are involved with every part of it. We stay involved mostly because we don't want to release control to anybody because we've been used to doing everything ourselves for years whether it be booking our own tours or financing our first records; we put out our first record. We did all that stuff on our own. I think that's more of what keeps a band with the underground mentality. 'Cos right now, I'd love to sell a million records, don't get me wrong! [laughs] But I don’t think we’d ever do it at the cost of losing [control]."
FourteenG.net: What's the ratio of your fans: more male than females?
Brian Fair: "I'd say we have more male fans in general because metal seems to be testosteroned based BUT it has been changing a lot lately. It's been becoming much more of a mixed crowd in which I love!! We get some serious mosh action but I don't really like the violence at shows. I want people going crazy and jumping on each other's heads. But I don't like the fights and the boys' club mentality that can happen at a lot of shows; so it's nice to see girls singing along in the pit and stage diving. Hopefully we will get more and more and honestly as the band gets more popular, girls show up! And that's cool…"
