Manson's Depech Mode Cover Was A Replacement

Marilyn Manson tells MTV News that his cover of Depeche Mode's hit 'Personal Jesus' actually replaced a duet between Manson and Garbage singer Shirley Manson on his greatest hits album. "That's what we were originally planning to do for this album, but the track didn't really come out exactly how we wanted it," Manson explained. "It wasn't fantastic enough to even be on either of our albums...I wasn't in the best frame of mind when I did it, and I had to take some time away, and that's when I had a moment of clarity and 'Personal Jesus' came to mind."

Duff Mckagan Tempted By Microsoft

In an interview with Ireland's Belfast Telegraph, bassist Duff Mckagan (Velvet Revolver/ex-Guns N' Roses) revealed that in 1998, after the breakup of Guns 'N' Roses, he headed back to school. The Velvet Revolver bassist and his wife, Susan, had relocated to Seattle, and that's where he earned a degree in finance.

"After I finished rehab, I needed to find ways to fill my time, so I started going through the financial statements of Guns from the previous four years. I couldn't make sense of them, so I thought it might be a good idea to go back to school and learn how it all worked."

After McKagan earned his finance degree, Microsoft offered him a job. The bassist admits he was tempted. "Sure I was. You always want what you don't have, and I thought that would be very interesting. But then I got another opportunity, to be in a killer band with a bunch of old friends. In the end, it was no contest."

Elvenking Comment On Singer Return To The Fold

Italian "pagan metal" band Elvenking have issued a statement confirming that they have been rejoined by singer Damnagoras.

Damnagoras left the band in August 2002 due to "health reasons" and was replaced by Kleid.

Commented Elvenking: "After the long wait, we can officially confirm Damnagoras' return in the band. The singer who left Elvenking two years ago has joined his fellows back in order to re-create the original heathen spirit and essence that bound every single member to each other. The band, after the release of their last album 'Wyrd' (recorded with a different singer, Kleid) entered a difficult period due to various reasons related to the musical direction to take, personal relations, business affairs, etc. Put in front of this situation, there was no choice for ELVENKING to keep on expressing themselves still being faithful to what the band was born for. Now that the original line-up is still together, things are going great and the songwriting process for the third album has been nearly completed!

"After the release of 'Wyrd' the contract between Elvenking and AFM Records was about to end, but following the amazing results both for sales and critcs of the two albums, we're happy to announce that the band and AFM will keep on working together also for the next one!"

The follow-up to 2001's "Heathenreel", "Wyrd" was recorded in three different studios, including the Gernhart facility in Siegburg, Germany and was mixed in December at House Of Music in Stuttgart, Germany with producer Achim Kohler (Primal Fear, Brainstorm). The cover artwork was painted by pagan artist Duncan Storr, who has previously worked with Skyclad and Rage, among others.

Savatage On Hold For Business Reasons

In a recent interview with BW&BK about his new project Jon Olivas's Pain, Savatage frontman/founder Jon Oliva explained why the long awaited follow-up to the band's 2001 album Poets And Madmen hasn't surfaced.

“Savatage has been together for 23 years, all the guys in the band except for me play with the Trans-Siberian Orchestra, I write for TSO, and unfortunately Savatage has taken a back seat to that. It’s for business reasons mainly, because you don’t take something that’s selling out Madison Square Garden and 18,000 seat arenas and crush it over a band that sells 100,000 records. That’s common sense, and Savatage can go on as long as the guys want to make records. We’re planning on doing something for the 25th Anniversary of the band, which falls in 2007. We’ve been compiling video footage and I’ve been working on material, so we’re just going to see what happens. But, that’s still a couple years away, and in the meantime I want to go out and play. I don’t want to sit around and get old, which is why I came up with Jon Oliva’s Pain. I figure that if it takes two or three years to get another Savatage record out it’s not gonna matter because I’ll still be doing stuff that makes me happy.”

The Jon Oliva's Pain debut, 'Tage Mahal, will be released on October 25th through SPV. Savatage guitarist Chris Caffery released his solo debut Faces / God Damn War on September 24th.

The Chasm Touring Bassist Announced

Chicago's The Chasm have announced that they will be joined by bassist Ivan Galdamez of Chicago's Whorrid during their upcoming gigs with Mortician.

The Chasm's new album, "The Spell of Retribution", is scheduled for release on November 16 via Earache Records. The vinyl edition will be released on a single disc and the first 250 copies (the "Death & Retribution" edition) will include a limited-edition poster.

Comprising 10 tracks with a running time of over 66 minutes, "The Spell of Retribution" represents The Chasm's "most adventurous and ambitious project to date, and firmly sets them apart from the rest of the current death metal scene by incorporating purposely lengthy songs dealing with intricate concepts close to the heart of frontman Daniel Corchado," according to a posting on the Earache web site.

Recorded at Soto Sound Studios in Illinois and then mixed by Corchado at Lux Inframundis, the album's recording was not without its problems, including at one point a studio fire that set the schedule back and led to the CD taking longer than anticipated to complete.

A full-length MP3 of the new The Chasm track "Fortress", taken from the forthcoming album, is available for download at this location.
