Vehemence Tour Update From John Chavez

Vehemence guitarist John Chavez has provided this update:

As of right now we just got back from Vegas and the show was a mess. None of the bands got paid and attendance included 15 people. The promoter didn't know what was going on, the stage of half built when we showed up, and fucked the bands out of the cost of us to get there. We canceled our appearance in Tijuana, Mexico due to finances at this point in the tour, and not having contracts or payment to play it. We will be back there soon, its only 7 hours away from Phoenix, so hang in there all that wanted to see us. We will begin touring again in California all the way up finishing this tour in Canada; I will give another lengthy update when this tour is over. Thanks to all and see us at the shows, support your scene or it won't support you. Also visit our secondary website on the ever popular myspace.com networking website. If you want on our guest list for any of our shows, just message us on there.

Nocturnal Rites Drummer Recovering

Swedish power metallers Nocturnal Rites have posted this update on their official website regarding drummer Owe Lingvall's recent surgery:

Owe's surgery went really well and he would like to express his grattitude to the fans for all their messages and concern. He is now back from the hospital, at home and recovering quite quickly (although it still hurts like hell, he says). We know lots of you really want to know exactly what happened. Well, Owe was taking out a tent from the ground at his summer house and apparently it got stuck for some reason. After some pulling he got it to come out of the ground, but unfortunately, one of the nails holding it down came out of the ground like a missile hitting his left eye. Massive bad luck...

As soon as Owe is 100% up and running again, we will make plans for the new record and possible shows at the end of this year or early 2005. In the meantime, the rest of us will continue working on new material and be looking forward to the new video clip for "Against the World" to be released.

Heavy Metal is the law, play loud,

Nils E

Amon Amarth Vocalist Johan Hegg Checks In

Amon Amarth vocalist Johan Hegg has checked in with this band update:

Two shows are in the bag, and the only way to describe the tour so far is success! First show in Hamburg, Markthalle with maximum capacity of 1,200, attracted over 1,100 people. The show went great, and the audience was fantastic! Even though the place was a virtual sauna the fans was going at it like crazy. The day after we struck Osnabrück at the N8 club. Over 700 people showed up for this show, and again a fantastic show. Even though the venue was not quite as hot as the night before, the intensity of the crowd was unbelievable. Keep an eye on the site for further tour reports!

Napalm Death Commence North American Tour

Birmingham's fathers of grindcore, Napalm Death, kickoff their 36-date North American tour tonight with their headlining show in Toronto, Canada. The first eight dates the band performs with Misery Index, and the remaining dates take the band across the U.S. with Cannibal Corpse, Kataklysm, and Goatwhore.

Always outspoken about politics, Napalm Death vocalist Barney Greenway had this to say about the elections:

If Bush gets voted in for another term, people really need to take a long, hard look at themselves. With Bush back in power, there'll be more unjustified military intervention, more shitty healthcare provisions for the poor, a country mired further in religious dogma etc. Not to mention seeing more of Jeb Bush's fat head on TV. On the other hand, the Democrats don't offer a real alternative. They're very close to the Republicans on a few issues, which is disappointing. I noted how some of the anti-war advocates in the Democratic Party were silenced quite early on. The crazy thing is that voting for the Green Party guy Ralph Nader is considered a pointless exercise, where as he is one of the only people to offer radical thinking. Based purely on his thoughts, I would probably go for Nader if I was an American.

That said, I think the whole system needs an overhaul. That whole 'vote-rig' thing by the Republicans in Florida last time was such a farce, people outside of the U.S. just could not believe that Americans would let something like that pass. I find it really amusing that the Republicans cast themselves as pillars of honesty when everything they do is steeped in corruption and self-interest. Similarly, I lived through Thatcher's ruthless conservatism in Britain, and I would not want to go through it again.

Napalm Death released their Century Media debut, "Leaders Not Followers: Part 2" on October 5.

Pharaoh Chooses MCR Studios For Recording

PHARAOH drummer Chris Black reported that the band decided on MCR Studios in Virginia for the recording of “The Longest Night”.

"This is a full-service, modern facility, with a very metal-minded staff," he stated. "Tim, Matt, Chris and I are eager for their input in crafting the new record." Full-length albums from Division and Twisted Tower Dire are currently in production at MCR.

PHARAOH will begin recording “The Longest Night” in late 2004 for a projected release date in March, 2005

via the designer Italian metal label Cruz del Sur. Cover artwork will once again be provided by J.P. Fournier (Immortal, Dragonforce).

Featuring such tracks as "Fighting", "As Time Goes By", and "I am the Hammer", The Longest Night will be

PHARAOH's second full-length album, following up 2003's acclaimed After the Fire debut. "The new material expands the PHARAOH sound slightly," explained the drummer, "but the fundamentals are exactly the same: power, class, wit, and melody. We celebrate the traditions of heavy metal by advancing them. And it helps that Tim kills!" he added, referring to powerhouse vocalist Tim Aymar, well-known for his past work with Control Denied and Psycho Scream.

Taking Back Sunday Singer: I'm No Emo Sex Symbol

Taking Back Sunday singer Adam Lazzara laughs at the idea of being an emo sex symbol. "Just even tagging the word 'sex' on and having it relate to me is just funny in general, because I'm just an awkward mess when it comes to anything like that," he tells Josh Bell of Las Vegas Weekly. As for living up to the rock star label, Lazzara said, "I don't think there's such a thing as rock stars anymore. We're definitely not rock stars, and if we are rock stars, we're real pathetic at it."

Nu-Metal Rockers Past Their Best Days?

USA Today music writer Ken Barnes took part in an online chat with readers on Tuesday, where he was asked about the state of nu-metal, with the questioner suggesting Linkin Park, Papa Roach, Marilyn Manson, and Korn are still going strong. "I don't know, they all seem to be past their best days to me," Barnes countered. "Linkin Park still does well on radio and in record stores, but their tour this summer wasn't exactly a sensation. Papa Roach and Marilyn Manson seem to belong more to yesterday, and Korn, if they're lucky, may hang on to attain some sort of elder-statesman status as the Metallica of nu-metal. But I think it's more likely that they'll fade, too."

SOAD, Tool Members On Axis Of Justice Album

The full track listing for the upcoming "Axis Of Justice Concert Series, Vol. 1" CD/DVD package has been unveiled.

The CD features collaborative performances from Audioslave vocalist Chris Cornell, drummer Brad Wilk and guitarist Tom Morello, Tool singer Maynard James Keenan, System Of A Down frontman Serj Tankian, singer/songwriter Pete Yorn, and Red Hot Chili Peppers bassist Flea, as well as rappers Jurassic 5.

Morello also plays solo as his alter ego, the Nightwatchman. The DVD includes many of the same performances, along with skits, spoken word segments and interviews with filmmaker Michael Moore and actor and radio host Janeane Garofalo.

Axis Of Justice is a political activism organization founded by Tankian and Morello, who says he doesn't understand why many feel musicians shouldn't get involved in social and political issues.

"People ask the most asinine question, like, well, why -- 'I don't want to hear from you -- shut up and rock,' you know. But when you pick up a guitar, you don't put down your First Amendment rights. What I would say is 'You should be speaking out as well.' Like, why should we just leave it to a bunch of billionaires and crooks to run our country?"

Among the songs performed on the CD are U2's "Where The Streets Have No Name," Nick Lowe's "(What's So Funny 'Bout) Peace, Love And Understanding," Bob Dylan's "Chimes Of Freedom" and Bob Marley's "Get Up, Stand Up."

"Axis Of Justice Concert Series, Vol. 1" is due out on November 16th through Serjical Strike/Columbia Records. Serjical Strike is Serj Tankian's custom label.

Kiss Singer Undergoes Surgery, Donates Guitar

After putting it off for a few years, Kiss singer/guitarist Paul Stanley has finally had hip replacement surgery. According to a message on the official website, the operation took place October 12th, there were no complications, and his recovery will include six to eight weeks of physical therapy at home. Stanley has said that his left hip degenerated from years of high-energy performances with Kiss.

The surgery was supposed to happen about three years ago, but Stanley put it off, even though he knew it would have to happen eventually:

I wound up postponing my hip surgery and, you know, it's like reading in the newspaper your own death, you know, when you keep reading about your hip surgery, and I haven't done it, but I'm just postponing it for awhile. I have, you know, every intention of continuing doing what I've been doing, but little by little I'm turning bionic.

In other news, Paul Stanley has donated a signed guitar to a children's charity. The autographed Silvertone Apocalypse Special is being sold by guitars4kids.com, and 100 percent of the proceeds will be donated to the St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital in Memphis, which treats seriously ill children and adolescents regardless of their family's medical insurance or their ability to pay. The auction ends Saturday (October 23rd) at about 6 p.m. ET, so to make a bid, go to ebay.com and search for "Silvertone Apocalypse Signed."

Orphaned Land Comments On Shuni Fortress Gig

Over the weekend, Orphaned Land played for over 1,000 people in a Shuni Fortress for over two and a half hours. They performed both an acoustic and an electric set, and played tracks from all three of their albums. The band was impressed to see the crowd respond overwhelmingly to tracks from their Century Media debut, 2004's "Mabool." Vocalist Kobi Farhi commented on their enthusiastic performance: "I was in ecstasy! I was singing the first half of the first song in the electric set, when I realized that the microphone was on the other side of the stage. I couldn't understand why I couldn’t hear myself; it became the joke of the show :). The crowd threw loads of candy at us (as Jewish usually do in Bar Mitzvah since it was Orphaned Land's Bar Mitzvah). In the acoustic set we were dressed in white clothing and then for the electric we changed into black, the switch of the vibes was so perfect!" The band brought along six female singers to perform the choral arrangements for "Building the Ark," a cellist, and other guest musicians.

Reunited Gorefest To Enter Studio Again

From the official website of the Dutch band:

There where a lot of rumours going on lately but now its official the guys are back together again. After 6 and a half years they are jamming together again. "After a few minutes we stood there all with a big smile on our face like 'fucking hell we rocked.' It felt great playing together again."

They have rehearsed a few times now the first day they played a few old songs but the second day they already started to write new songs. Three songs are already recorded and the guys are listening to them at home and playing around with them. Jan Chris said that at least one of the new songs is faster than everything they ever did. He ensures us that the next record will be a hard and dark album, and he means very hard!

When we will see this new album.... well no hurries. In October they are going into the studio again to record some more but they don't follow deadlines anymore. They do it when they want to and don't want to feel that pressure anymore.

Nikki Sixx Refutes Motley Cure Reunion Rumors

From www.motley.com:

It's nice to hear that fans, bands, promoters and agents would like to see a Motley Crue tour. But right now I know Vince is booking tons of live shows, Tommy is busy promoting a book and doing his reality show and Mick is in rehabilitation after surgery (Who knows when and if he would feel up to it even if there was a tour) It takes four guys to do it. It hasn't happened since 1999.

All I know is all four of us haven't been in the same room in six years. In the world of Motley, I'd say don't hold your breath.

p.s. Props to whoever made the tour ad I saw on the net.
