This Week In Metal: October 6th, 2005

Top 10 Albums (Thanks to CMJ)

1. Opeth - Ghost Reveries --Last Week #1--Weeks On Chart 3
2. Hypocrisy - Virus--Last Week #3--Weeks On Chart 3
3. Between the Buried and Me - Alaska--Last Week #2--Weeks On Chart 3
4. Every Time I Die - Gutter Phenomenon--Last Week #4--Weeks On Chart 3
5. God Forbid - Constitution of Reason--Last Week #11--Weeks On Chart 1
6. Fear Factory - Transgression--Last Week #6--Weeks On Chart 3
7. Soulfly - Dark Ages--Last Week n/a--Weeks On Chart 1
8. Arch Enemy - Doomsday Machine--Last Week #5--Weeks On Chart 3
9. Black Dahlia Murder - Miasma--Last Week #8--Weeks On Chart 3
10. Chimaira - Chimaira--Last Week #7--Weeks On Chart 3

Finally some new blood! God Forbid breaks the stranglehold of great albums in the top by breaking through and in the 5th spot. This is the second week God Forbids album has been out, last week they missed by 1 in 11th. For the record first week album sales never look good because of the date the albums released and the date the poll is published only allow a half week of sales. How about god-damn Opeth. Three weeks in a row they keep the #1 spot on the charts, and now a new #2 challenges their prowlous with Hypocrisy. Arch Enemy, The Black Dahlia Murder and Chimairas albums have seen better days, all of them have been out for at least 2 months and are finally seeing their skid off of the charts. Soulflys new album is on the rise and next week we MIGHT see a peek at the new A Dozen Furies album, or KMFDMs latest effort Hau Rock.

And now for the top 10 singles in metal (thanks to MusicChoice):

1. Watch Them Die - "Bastard Son"--Last Week n/a
2. Hypocrisy - "Scrutinized"--Last Week n/a
3. Cannae - "Idemnity"-- Last Week n/a
4. Soulfly - "babylon"--Last Week n/a
5. Throwdown - "We Will Rise"-- Last Week #5, Weeks On Chart 2
6. Bullet For My Valentine "Hand of Blood" -- Last Week n/a
7. Arch Enemy - "Nemesis"--Last Week n/a
8. Every Time I Die - "Guitrred and Feathered" Last Week #8, Weeks on Chart *3*
9. As I Lay Dying - "Confined" Last Week n/a
10. Byzantine - "Taking Up Serpents" Last Week 6, Weeks On Chart 2

New Releases From AILD, and Soulfly are seeing immediate attention and I expect to see them in the top next week as well. How can I not talk about Every Time I Die - the only band with a single that has been on the chart all 3 weeks I've been writing the column. Its amazing to see the success their having with the album and single. Watch Them Die's new track Bastard Son is awesome and I heavily recommend checking it out. And there again is Hypocrisy in the #2 slot this time with the single, Scrutinized. Throwdown possibly doing best next to only ETID, as their single We Will Rise stays steady at #5.

Testament Cancel Tour Plans

San Francisco Bay Area thrashers TESTAMENT have announced the cancellation of their appearance at the Live 'N' Louder Rock Fest, set to take place October 12 at the Estádio do Canindé in São Paulo, Brazil.

"After pulling out of the October 15 concert in Porto Alegre, Brazil, the band have now decided to call off their entire Latin American/Mexican tour, which was to include stops in Brazil, Chile and Mexico. The reason for cancelling the tour, according to the band, is that a new guitar player was not found in time for rehearsals, and all options were exhausted.

"The band had first announced 'Metal' Mike Chlasciak (HALFORD, PAINMUSEUM, SEBASTIAN BACH) as the fill-in guitarist for the tour. They then 'replaced' him with Derrick Ramirez, who had previously played with the band when they were still called LEGACY.

"When it became clear that Derrick would not be able to do the tour, the festival organizers offered to find TESTAMENT a Brazilian guitar player to replace him, going as far as to suggest a few names. However, the band's management wasn't interested and the group refused to make an effort to come down and do the tour. Meanwhile plane tickets for the band had already been paid for and TESTAMENT's money had already been sent.

"This is the third time TESTAMENT have cancelled their Latin American tour.

"To replace TESTAMENT, German thrash metal icons DESTRUCTION have been recruited to play the Sao Paulo and Porto Alegre dates. As a result, DESTRUCTION will now kick off their world tour in South America in support of their acclaimed new album, 'Inventor of Evil'."

Former Korn Axeman To Work With APC Drummer

Former KORN guitarist Brian "Head" Welch has posted the following message on his web site, HeadtoChrist.com:

"I'm in the recording studio in Phoenix. I hooked up with a drummer named Josh Freese [A PERFECT CIRCLE] [in mid-September]. He recorded 23 songs for me while he was here. He's by far the best drummer I've ever witnessed in a recording studio. The guy can play anything. While he was recording, I was still writing about a song a day. So now he has to come back and record another 10 or 20.

"I can't stop writing. I've never written so much music in my life! I am completely speechless when I listen back to these songs. It's so clear that I am only a vessel. Nine months ago, I could barely piece one song together.

"I'm going in to record my guitars tomorrow. It should be early 2006 when [my solo album] comes out. Sorry I can't answer all your questions right now. Just trust that I will deliver the most intense music you've ever heard in your life."

Behemoth Checks In From The Road

Polish black/death metallers BEHEMOTH have posted the following message on their official website:

"Let’s start with the first show that took place in San Diego, on West Coast. Although we showed up pretty late and didn’t have much time to check our new equipment we enjoyed the whole thing a lot. The audience was simply amazing. The same night we left to Las Vegas, where the second concert took place. It was our first time that we’ve ever played in this city and again, the audience made our day! All the bands kicked serious ass that evening but DANZIG set was a highlight of the night. I need to mention that me and my band mates will never forget that night in Vegas for some other reasons that I’m gonna keep as a secret, ha ha. Anyway, big THANK U to all the Century Media friends that took such a good care of us that evening! We had a blast! Viva Las Vegas!” commented Nergal on first few shows.

“Last night we played in San Francisco, in front of 1500 people. It was outside the venue and that night was rather chilly and windy but the crowd made this show sooo fuckin’ hot! Probably our best concert in SF so far. You deserve all our respect. Keep it up! CHIMAIRA was really tight that evening. Very good set, but again Mr. DANZIG blew everything away with their amazing performance.”

Before hitting the stage in Seattle, BEHEMOTH did one off show with CHIMAIRA, THE AGONY SCENE and HIMSA in Bend, Oregon on October 3rd.

Nergal and Allen (ESP) discussing details of custom models

From other news BEHEMOTH have visited their endorsers at ESP and Spaun before doing their first show in San Diego. Nergal, Orion and Seth got their brand new ESP guitars that are being tested during current U.S. dates while Inferno received his monstrous custom Spaun kit. We’d like to thank Allen from ESP, Steve and John from Spaun/FPE for all their help in delivering such a quality equipment."

Therion Reveal DVD Plans

Swedish operetic Metal act THERION's Christofer Johnsson (guitars & vocals) spoke to Metal Temple magazine’s Ian Kaatz during this year’s edition of ProgPower USA (Sept. 15-17 at Eartlink Live, Atlanta, GE). In his interview with Ian, Johnsson revealed the band’s plans for a multiple DVD release due for release in March 2006 and also spoke about their upcoming new full length album which still remains untitled. Here are some excerpts from the interview:

- Metal Temple: Have you started writing any new material?

- Christofer Johnsson: "We have all the songs for the next record finished."

- Metal Temple: Wow.

- Christofer Johnsson: "We recorded enough material for 3 albums but only released 2 albums, so we have to catch up."

- Metal Temple: Does the new material sound similar to the double disc ("Lemuria" & "Sirius B" - Nuclear Blast Records, 2004)?

- Christofer Johnsson: "It’s not a double disc, not to be picky. It is two different records but they were sold together as a double disc because not many people have that much money. It was way over-stocked by distributors in the U.S, so that’s why they still have it. We didn’t limit in numbers. For three months people can buy as much as they like. The third one was recorded in the same time frame, so it will be closer to these ones than to our previous records. That doesn’t mean it will sound the same. We divided the three records upon different solo songs. We saved the more progressive ones for the third one."

- Metal Temple: Oh okay, that sounds really sweet. Do you have a release date for the DVD? Because I know that in the previous interview you did with Metal Temple, you said you were working on a live DVD.

- Christofer Johnsson: "I am not going to say how many discs but it will contain multiple discs and it will be out in March of next year."

The Fifth Sun Issue Album Update

THE FIFTH SUN, who feature in their current lineup Swedish drummer Patrik J. Sten (PASSENGER, ex-TRANSPORT LEAGUE), have issued the following update regarding the status of their forthcoming release "The Hunger to Survive":

"Here's the latest news. We will have the album back from manufacture in a few short days. 8-page full color booklet, she looks lean and mean! T-shirts, Long sleeves, Hoodies, and hats have been ordered and will arrive in a week or so. Tentative release date for 'The Hunger to Survive’ is October 18th, although we may push it back to October 25th, depending on several key factors. We had been toying with the idea of playing a few shows in the Midwest, but due to Studio Fredman being busy as hell, Patrik couldn’t leave Fredrik in the studio all alone, so we will not play them. We will however be playing 20 to 30 selected dates in 2006, so keep an eye out for those dates. They will be announced here when they are confirmed. Last, but certainly not least, we have some great news!!! Patrik and his lovely lady, Maria are expecting a new addition to the family on February 20th. We are very excited for them and you should be too! That’s it for this update. Keep checking the site in the coming week, there’s going to be lots of new stuff going on. Contests, deals, give-a-ways, hell even some free shit!

Now Playing: Negatyve One's Playlist

Hello and welcome to my section in Now Playing. First I will clarify that I am part of what Deathbringer likes to call the NWOAM/C (New Wave of American Metal/Metalcore). So all of my stuff will be newer pure american metal.

Everybody has those staple cd's that always seem to find a way into your changer no matter what, so I will start with those.

Lamb of God - Ashes of the Wake. I friggin love this cd, cover to end. Its really hard for me to find a cd that I can spin countlessly all the way through and not get tired of it but if anything has ever come close this is the cd. The countless speed and rhythm of this cd never let me down.

Devildriver - s/t or The Fury of Our Makers Hand. This group has yet to dissapoint me. In fact I couldnt imagine filling my cd tray without at least one cd by these guys. Although cover to cover they might not be as good as Lamb of God, their unique style drives me to consistantly listen to them.

Trivium - Asendancy. Ive only recently picked this cd up, and I did mostly because Pull Harder On The Strings of My Martyr is such a badass song. This band is very young and while they have a long way to go seem to have mastered so much musically, its a must own in my collection.

And now for the various cds I spin through in a week :

Heaven Shall Burn - Antigone. A Band really only known to Europe, but very quickly catching popularity here despite never touring. Every hardcore type band from the states picks these guys up for their euro stops, including currently As I Lay Dying. So if you like them, or any of the bands Ive named Id check out their site and single - The Weapon They Fear.

As I Lay Dying - Shadows Are Security. Ah yes, the hardcore (emoish if youd like to call them that) cd in my player. Always a good pick me up especially in the morning as I dont drink coffee or soda pop really. I also recently did a review on this cd in the reviews section.

Shadows Fall - Ah the band referred to as my generations Iron Maiden (Yes, Im only 21). This band is great and they have everything including a killer live show. I cannot get enough of Brian Fairs vocals.

And for brand new cds Ive picked up and cant stop spinning :

The Haunted - rEVOLVEr. I heard so much about this band before I even started listening to them. Deathbringer recommended them himself, but they always seemed to be one of the bands that elluded my ears. Now that I downloaded (legally) a mp3 of their single "99" I was hooked. Although the cd itself isnt that great, there are many songs on there that maintain in my playlist.

Unearth - The Oncomming Storm - I always loved Unearth but never got around to actually getting a cd of theirs until this one. I cant say enough about how well this band plays together and cant wait to catch them live later this month.

And now for my throwback cd pick of this article (as I will do in every article)......

Nothingface - Pacifier, possibly the best cd they ever released (Skeletons was good but not cover to cover) Im a huge old school nothingface fan and have been listening for years, its a shame they broke up and im real skeptical about their new project with skrapes frontman.

Thats it for me, Keep the Horns High Metal Heads \m/
