Soulfly Guitarist Talks About Return To Thrash

Cameron Edney of Inside Out 666 interviewed Soulfly's Marc Rizzo and discussed the re-release of his solo album, the new Soulfly album, the possibility of releasing a live DVD, touring Australia, those comments Max recently made about touring again with Sepultura and much more. Here are some excepts:

INSIDE_OUT666: I love the new album it’s somewhere along the lines of old Sepultura meets new Soulfly!

MARC RIZZO: Exactly! Joe & I are both huge thrash metal fans as is Max. We wanted to get back to that style. We love the Soulfly stuff but we really wanted to get back to solos & great thrash riffs.

INSIDE_OUT666: How long did it take to record the new album?

MARC RIZZO: Not long at all; it took about a month to record the basic guitars, bass & drums. Max took a bit of time doing the vocals & going over the world to find those weird instruments. It took us about six months all together.

INSIDE_OUT666: When it came time to record ‘Dark Ages’ did you approach it in a different way to albums you have worked on in the past?

MARC RIZZO: I think we talked about getting back to the thrash style because Joe & myself are really into that style of music & we’re both well schooled in that style of music. Max also wanted to go back into more of the world music vibe that he’s always had. He continued to go around the world to look for strange instruments to use on the record.

INSIDE_OUT666: Max recently said in an interview that he is looking forward to playing shows again in the future with Sepultura. With statements such as that & yourself having side projects, what does the future hold for the Soulfly?

MARC RIZZO: I think Soulfly will be going on forever. For as long as Max is around Soulfly will continue. If Max put Sepultura back together that would be awesome, I’m the first person who’d love to see that. I’m a huge Sepultura fan, I grew up on Sepultura, & they’re still one of my favorite bands.

INSIDE_OUT666: Now Soulfly are heading back out on tour this month, what can fans expect to see this time around?

MARC RIZZO: This time around we’re going to do everything off the new record; the fans can really expect to see a thrash set. We’re also going to be doing all the old classic Soulfly songs & a lot of old Sepultura stuff like ‘Inner Self’, ‘Dead Embryonic Cells’, ‘Territory’ & ‘Mass Hypnosis’. We try to get all these songs perfect, note for note cause we’re such fans of the music. I think you can expect a fast, brutal & heavy set from us.

God Dethroned Writing New Material

Dutch death metallers GOD DETHRONED have posted the following message on their official web site:

"Hailz to all the mighty worms who visited us during our U.S. & Canadian trip the last five weeks! We had a great fuckin' time on the road and it was cool to meet some old friends and fans again and to meet loads of new ones! Unfortunately, a few shows were cancelled. We don't know why, but for all of you who showed up for nothing, sorry, but it was totally beyond our control. Also many thanx to everyone who attended our shows at the European summer festivals. You guys fucking ruled!
Right now we are already working on new material for another album. We are planning to enter the studio in January 2006 latest. We can't wait to go back out on the road again. See you guys soon! Cheers!"

MacDonough: New Album Will 'Kick Some Major Butt"

MEGADETH bassist James MacDonough (ex-ICED EARTH) has posted the following message in the "Forums" section of the band's official web site:

"We all fly home today of course to be with our families, leaving the Killing Road for a bit. We have a huge family of Droogs all around the world.

"Like I said in my previous post, this has been an awesome tour and a truly amazing experience. Now it's time to regroup and get ready for the next endeavor, this next album will kick some major butt. A new MEGADETH with the old sincerity.

"THANKS again my friends. I'll catch up in a couple of weeks with many new pics for you to check out, spanning the last few months or so.

"Stay metal and be safe!"

MEGADETH mainman Dave Mustaine announced at the conclusion of the band's headlining performance in Buenos Aires, Argentina on October 9 that the group's current lineup — which includes MacDonough, drummer Shawn Drover (EIDOLON) and guitarist Glen Drover (EIDOLON) — will continue to record and tour under the name MEGADETH.

MEGADETH have just completed a South American tour in support of "The System Has Failed", which came out in September 2004. The latest MEGADETH release, "Greatest Hits: Back to the Start" (Capitol), entered the Billboard chart at No. 65 and has sold 98,000 copies in the United States, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

Vehemence Guitarist Comment on Breakup

VEHEMENCE guitarists John Chavez and Bjorn Dannov have issued separate statements regarding the band's decision to go their separate ways via the group's official message board. Their statements read as follows:

John Chavez: "Yah, guys, it is true. I tried hard to persuade the guys to keep it together, but they felt this was the best time to throw in the towel and move on to the next chapter. I started to feel it too after what was said and presented.

"Basically, the overall vibe of VEHEMENCE was decreasing. The songs were good, and I think the whole thing with Sean Vandegrift not producing lyrics for six months, and not moving down to Phoenix, had something to do with the frustration and tension within the band leading to its demise. It would have been an awesome new VEHEMENCE record — a lot of twists and turns in the music, most diverse record ever. With replacing Nathan Gearhart — founder of VEHEMENCE, and creator of the name — it would be a different kind of presence; it would also be far from the lyrics/stories with another guy writing for us. We didn't really give Adam Cody a chance to write a whole lot either maybe a couple weeks and the stuff he came up with was pretty awesome stuff to say the least. Some bands just overwrite their old singers and move on with a new vibe and new era, but that wasn't the case with us, unfortunately. More...

Nicodemus Seek Keyboard Player

Portland-based goth metallers NICODEMUS are seeking a full-time keyboard player for recording and touring. Keyboards on the band's previous albums had been handled by vocalist/bassist Christopher Morris. The group have decided to enlist the talents of a full-time keyboard player for future releases and tours. Interested candidates must be willing to relocate to the Pacific Northwest (Portland, Oregon area). Contact the band at info@nicodemus.us. Auditions will begin immediately.

NICODEMUS recently released their third album, entitled "Vanity Is A Virtue", through the Greek label Sonic Age Records. The album reportedly owes more to the progressive sound than previous NICODEMUS releases, 2000's "Tales of the Lovelorn and Necromantic" (Dark Throne Music) and 2003's "The Supernatural Omnibus" (Dark Symphonies), which saw the band focusing on a goth/black metal-based style with progressive elements.
