Pit Stories: The Weird Things Fans Do

Update: Our apologies to Gomorrah, half this story was accidentally cut when this first went live!

Ready for another bout of Pit Stories metal fans? This week we've got a tale from Bowen Matheson of Canadian group Gomorrah, who shares an experience about the bizarre behavior sometimes exhibited by fans:

We played two local all-ages hardcore shows in Kelowna, BC in close succession in the fall of 2013, one before and after the release of "Perception." The first was with the bands Contention and Slumlord, and there was a kid in the pit who went up to Phil from Slumlord during their set and yelled into the strings of his guitar. He looked at this kid with the most fucked expression of disdain and confusion I’ve ever seen.

At the next show we were playing in support of Fall City Fall, and during our set same kid came up to me and tried to do the same thing. He ran in super fast, but this time actually made contact with the strings of my guitar, muting what I was playing. Kid basically went to first base with my guitar, and fucked up what I was playing. I wasn’t happy about this, so I grabbed the kid by his face and threw him away from me and my now tainted guitar. A buddy of mine saw the whole thing happen, and said that after I threw him, he looked back at me like I was the dick in the situation, and I just huffed my cheeks at him like an angry horse.

Several months go by, and we are playing another all ages hardcore show in Kelowna. A kid comes up to me, introduces himself, and explains to me that he was the kid in mention. He tried to tell me that it was “kind of his thing at shows” and nobody had ever gotten mad at him for doing that before. I recognized that this guy was basically telling me that I was the dick in the conversation, and he was trying to justify it again. It took me a great deal of self control to not explode on him, and instead I explained how getting in somebodies personal space and doing shit like that when they are performing is not okay. He seemed to have to consciously think about what I was telling him for it to make rational sense. I don’t know if he thought he was doing some flattering thing by doing that, but it is one of the weirdest things I’ve seen happen, then have happen to me at a show by the same mislead teenager.

Granted, it's not quite napping in the bass bin or pregnant moshing, but that's still weird. Let us know - what's the most baffling thing YOU'VE seen a fan do at a metal show? More...

German extreme metal band Downfall Of Gaia just announced a split with guitarist Peter Wolff. The group comments:

"The year is coming to an end and we would like to thank each and everyone for an intense and busy 2015! Europe, USA, Japan and Australia - it has been a crazy ride! But unfortunately it's not only 2015 that is coming to an end.

"Priorities in life do change and from time to time you have to make choices and walk the path that's best for yourself even if it differs from the direction of others. So today is the day where we have to say goodbye to Peter!

"We would like to thank him for the last 7 years, the highs and lows, the willing and the unforgettable time we spent with each other! Our last show with Peter on guitar will be in April 2016. More info soon!

"Downfall of Gaia will continue as always! So right now we are looking for a new guitar player! Someone based in Berlin or Hamburg (best case/no must) with enough time, passion and willing to tour worldwide! If this sounds like you - get in contact via booking[at]downfallofgaia.com. Thanks!" Lost Society Posts New Studio Video

The young Finnish thrashers from Lost Society will release their third studio album called "Braindead" on February 12th, 2016 via Nuclear Blast. In support of this upcoming record, the band has revealed another studio trailer, which can be viewed below.

The cover artwork for the new record was created by Jan Meininghaus, and a music video for "I Am The Antidote" can be seen at this location. Samy Elbanna comments on the coming album:

"A lot has happened since the release of our second album; we've played loads of sick shows and we've definitely matured as songwriters and as musicians. We were beyond stoked to announce our new album »Braindead«! I'd have to say that this album truly shows what Lost Society is all about, and it's filled with the tightest, heaviest and most aggressive stuff we've EVER done.

"This album has the slowest songs and the fastest songs we've ever done and one thing is for sure: this will make you wanna go crazy! The album title itself is a portrayal of us in many ways, 'Braindead' has come to be another way of saying Lost Society, and it came to us as a natural decision to make it the title for what we feel is the best material we have ever made. Ladies and gentlemen, the times of a 'Braindead' revolution are upon us!" More...

Antimatter Posts 2015 Recap

Mick Moss from Antimatter just checked in with the following recap of the year and announcement about upcoming activity:

"Hello all! Another year, another 'wow was that really a year?' 2015 saw the release of Antimatter’s 6th studio album 'The Judas Table,' probably the most labour-intensive process so far, but it was worth it! So glad to finally get those songs out of my head and into the world! Thanks to all the session musicians who helped that happen!

"This year was also (thanks to Aftermath Music) full of dabblings in the live domain, with two full tours ('Leaving Eden Live Part 2' and 'The Judas Tour Part 1') and no fewer than 7 festivals. Somehow I also found the time to fit in 5 solo Acoustic Songbook gigs as well. I’m loving those acoustic solo gigs right now, and I’m relishing the chance to play live some of the music that really has inspired me over the years.

"Oh yeah, and there’s also the not-so-small matter of the video to ‘Stillborn Empires,’ thanks to Tomfoolery Pictures for the stunning work on that one! What a year!

"On to next year…. I’ll be taking the ‘Acoustic Evening of Antimatter’ shows to Latin America (so far Mexico and Colombia, but waiting on more dates for that) and Russia (dates to be announced soon!) as well as taking the electric band to Russia for shows in Moscow and St Petersburg. Also, we will be playing electric in Camden, London on January 9th in a rare UK appearance. ‘The Judas Tour Part 2’ is gearing up too!

"And in the studio … I got the chance to recently take a listen to the mix of the track I sang on for the Trees Of Eternity album. It’s called 'Condemned To Silence' and its turned out great!! It should see the light of day soon! (Trees Of Eternity is the new project of Swallow The Sun's Juha with vocalist Aleah and Katatonia's Norman brothers). More...

Asphyx Posts Tour Video, Working On Album

After returning from a tour of Latin America, Dutch metal band Asphyx continues working on new material to finally follow latest studio album release “Deathhammer” from 2012. Check out impressions from the tour in the video clip below, while the band had this to say:

“Asphyx recently ended a small tour throughout Latin America, which was the first tour of the band for over 20 years. We performed in Rio de Janeiro, Brasilia, Sao Paolo, Curitiba, Santiago de Chile, Buenos Aires, Lima, Mexico City, San Jose and Medellin. Thanks to all local promoters and venues, D-19 and especially our dedicated and insane fans it became a fantastic experience we'll never forget and a great success for Asphyx. So a massive 'cheerz a lot!' to everybody in making this possible and all the hordes that came to support the band.

"So many stories to tell, so many great times and shows we had. Brazil, Chile, Argentina, Peru, Mexico, Costa Rica and Colombia; all you crazy metal heads can be proud of your countries and continent where death metal is so very much alive. It was indeed death... the brutal way! And let's hope Asphyx can return in the near future!

"In January 2016, Asphyx will hit the rehearsal room to finish composing and arranging the final pieces for the follow up of 'Deathhammer.' And then hit the studio for the primary recordings, which will also feature Stefan 'Tormentor' Hueskens on drums for the very first time. So we start the new year off promising and 2016 will definitely see another brutal Asphyx album in our own particular style.” More...

Filth In My Garage Signs With Argonauta Records

Argonauta Records just issued the following announcement about inking a record deal with Filth In My Garage:

"We’re proud to announce a new exciting name being part of Argonauta Records family: Italian post hardcore / noise rockers Filth In My Garage joins today our roster and will enter the studios in the next days to record their highly anticipated new album.

"Born in September 2007 and formed by Matteo, Luca and Stefano, Filth In My Garage immediately realized a bunch of songs based on distorted guitar riffs, dissonant chords and very break up tempo that fit with a post hardcore attitude. The band released 3 Eps and the actual line-up is: Stefano – Vox, Matteo – Guitar, Giacomo – Guitar, Simone – Bass, Mauro – Drums.

"The new work and first full length sees the light 3 years after the EP '12.21.12,' which laid the foundation for a real reborn from an apocalyptic landscape, bringing the band to a new and less frantic horizon, less standardized and more spontaneous."

You can hear "12.21.12" below, while “Songs from the Lowest Floor” will be released on CD/DD by Argonauta Records on March 4th, 2016. More...

Skalmold Issues Year-End Update

After we premiered an awesome new lyric video from Skalmold, the Icelandic band has now checked in with the following year-end update:

"Today we celebrate that the days are finally getting longer. In Iceland this is a huge thing since the darkest days are very dark, now we have maybe 4 hours of daylight and 20 hours of pitch black, ice cold darkness. For some people this is a very hard period, many of us battle depression and other personal issues and the gloom is a powerful enemy to fight.

"We are now heading into the holidays. For most of us it is just great but for some it is not so. The hardest thing to do when you feel bad is forcing yourself to appear happy and sadly that is the reality for far to many. This is also the most stressful time of the year, we are all running around shopping and planning the days to come. Those are all fun things to do but we must not lose sight of what really matter; our friends and family and their happiness.

"So please, just for a moment, look up from your smartphone, turn off the tv and radio, stop thinking about what type of hairdryer to get your mom for Christmas, just stop all these things and look at the people around you. Your people. Are they all happy and ok? Take some time to hug them and tell them how you really feel about them. The right set of words at the right time can work magic.

"So. Have a wonderful last days of the year wherever in the world you might be. 2015 has been the best and we look forward seeing you again in 2016. Don’t you ever doubt that this world is a beautiful place and do remember that life is awesome. Gleðilega hátíð!" More...

Rhine Streaming "Paralyzed" Single

Seattle’s Rhine just premiered new single "Paralyzed" off upcoming album "An Outsider," which is due out on February 5th, 2016. Commented vocalist/guitarist Gabe Tachell about the song:

"The single 'Paralyzed' by Rhine is all about tension and release. The theme is about personal experiences with sleep paralysis. This song gives people a well rounded Rhine experience, showing both the dissonant and heavy as well as the light and pretty side of the music. It’s a very dynamic song that features a completely improvised solo plus a clean section that turns from sweet sounding finger picking into rock ‘n roll then back into an epic metal ending with a monotonous slow outro that represents the idea of being stuck in paralysis."

New album "An Outsider" is the follow up to Rhine's 2011 debut "Duality," which was first a solo effort by band founder Gabriel Tachell (guitar and vocals), whom is now joined by Alex Smolin on guitar (ex-Metameric), James Porter on bass (Ideofone), and Carlos Delgado (Inferion, ex-Death Crowned King) to collaborate on this project. Nominon Going On Hiatus

Long-running Swedish death metal band Nominon has officially been put on hold for the foreseeable future, with no plans on the horizon for writing or touring. The band comments:

"One foot in the grave... After some members of the band had a meeting last night at the headquarter's in Jönköping, Sweden, we have come to a decision to clean out the rehearsal place and move out of there. Simply since the band is not that active at this point, and hasn't been since the In Flammen festival show in Germany during July.

"This might not mean that the band Nominon is officially dead or what-so-ever, yet it is the first time in the band's 23 year history that we are not having any specific place to meet up and write / work on music together.

"Some of you out there might wonder, why are you guys doing this now and what will happen next etc?! Well, to be honest, none of us really know what'll happen? But one thing worth mentioning is that the members do live approximately 500 km from each other, and most of the guys in the band doesn't prioritize to play music. So it's not that easy to always keep our heads high and just continue like nothing has changed over the years, especially on a more personal level. Weirdly enough people tend to get older, and with age comes changes, naturally.

"With that being said, no one know what's in the crystal ball? Yet material has been written over the last couple of years that are still unreleased, and further songs will be written and recorded somewhere and somehow during the next couple of 2 years or so. But as mentioned, at this point the band is not active on many levels and therefore one can say that we are 'on hold.' We won't be playing any shows during 2016 as things are looking right now, it's just fact. More...

The band commented on the song and video clip: "With the help of some friends we put together a film clip for the Japanese bonus track 'The Endless Road' which was released in Japan last year on the 'Distant is the Sun' album. Although it was just over a year ago since we played in Japan, our tour there was a success and it really made a huge impression on all of us in the VP camp, so in a way we thought it would be a nice gesture for the people who haven’t heard the song to check it out and also as a tribute to the team of people in Japan who made the tour possible (you know who you are) as well as the people in Japan who made us feel welcome."
