Anthrax Issues Open Letter To Irving Azoff
Anthrax has issued an open letter to Irving Azoff, who apparently has begun legal proceedings against the Radio Music License Committee over radio rates for song writers. The band comments:
"Dear Mr. Azoff, as artists and songwriters, we certainly appreciate anyone's efforts to see that we are paid a fair wage for the use of our music, 'fair pay for fair play,' as your lawsuit against the Radio Music License Committee states. As a result of your suit, our understanding is that as of January 1, 2017, more than 10,000 U.S.-based radio stations could be fined if they program songs written by a songwriter represented by your company, Global Music Rights, without first obtaining the proper license. We certainly understand and respect that.
"However, you've included Anthrax on your 'What Songs are in the Global Music Rights repertoire' and that mere inclusion presents a skewed and unjust misrepresentation of the complete facts. This could be very damaging to us and to our fellow performers who may find themselves in a similar situation. More...
Skelethal To Release New Album
Hells Headbangers is proud to announce the signing of Skelethal for the band's debut full-length album, whose title will soon be revealed.
Hailing from the now-fertile French death metal scene, Skelethal comprise two diehard death metal addicts, Gui Haunting and Jon Whiplash, who decided in early 2012 to form a band mainly influenced by the genre's classics: Entombed, Carnage, Morbid Angel, Pestilence, Autopsy, and Death among others.
With that foundation firmly in place, Skeletal unleashed the "Morbid Ovation: demo in 2012 and then two critically acclaimed EPs in 2014, "Deathmanicvs Revelation" and "Interstellar Knowledge of the Purple Entity," which were later compiled onto CD in 2015 as "Morbid Revelations."
A statement from the band reads: "It’s with substantial pleasure that Skelethal announces the signing with Hells Headbangers for the release of ourfirst full-length album. A blast of nine morbid songs written and played with devotion to cosmic horrors and inspired by pioneers death metal acts - expect raw and filthy tunes ordered from beyond and hammered without mercy. More info to come in early 2017." More...

A handful of days ago Rolling Stone asked Trent Reznor about his vow to release new Nine Inch Nails material in 2016, with Reznor playing coy and teasing that something might still be coming.

"This song sets the tone for the album both lyrically and sonically,” explains Darkest Hour guitar player Mike Schleibaum. “While this may be the most fierce album we have ever released, its depth and sonic richness are sure to be discovered as the listener dives in. Thematically this song has a dual purpose. On the surface it is a classic Darkest Hour song, ripe with the reflection of today’s bleak modern age but as you peel back the lyrics and ideas contained within the album story unfolds, one that is all too common in human history. This is the beginning, it is part bitter reflection of the way things are and part anthem for those who struggle to survive as the world encircles them. To quote Nina Simone: 'An artists duty is to reflect the times,' with that we hold a mirror to the face of all things truly horrific and give you, ‘The Knife in the Safe Room.’"
The album's full track listing is as follows:

The Best And Worst Of Heavy Metal In 2016
We're at the end of the year already somehow? It was a big one for me personally as my head banging, bouncer moshing son arrived in May ready to throw the horns straight out of the womb!
There was a whole lot going on in the metal world as well to mark the year of his birth, with about equal parts good, bad, and utterly bizarre.
With the notable exception of one long-dormant mega band whose name is on everyone's lips, it seems like the reunion / reboot craze has finally come to a rest, for now anyway, and we can once again forget about all those broken up '80s and '90s groups seeking another day in the spotlight.
That paved the way for both a crop of new bands (and there were some awesome newcomers this year!) and long-running groups who never called it quits to show us what they could do throughout 2016.
The Good: Metal Highlights of 2016
It was back in 2015 that we started asking why there wasn't more heavy metal invading the world of PC and console gaming, and this year we actually saw some new additions. The top-down bullet hell wonder of "Metal Tales: Fury Of The Guitar Gods" just arrived last month, while the rhythm game / RPG "Metronomicon" landed at the end of September.
The beginning of the year was also marked by the very metaltastic "Slain," drawing heavily from early Castlevania, and while it had an incredibly rocky launch, reviews are steadily getting more positive as patches are released.
On the music front, this was unquestionably the year of thrash!
New albums arrived from Megadeth, Anthrax, Testament, and even the long-awaited return of the band everyone loves to hate, Metallica (although as our reader poll and CROMCarl's review show, there's clearly still some fans out there in the metal underground). More...

"Hope" Spreads Forth From Mord'A'Stigmata
The fourth full-length work in the discography of Mord’A’Stigmata is planned for a February 17th release via Pagan Records. "Hope" is a follow-up to 2013's critically acclaimed "Ansia," which exposed the band to the global spotlight. The record's enigmatic cover artwork (shown below) was created by Bartek Rogalewicz (Rogi, Non Opus Dei). "Hope" will be available on CD, LP and digital.
Mord’A’Stigmata mainman, Static (guitars), explains: “I once said 'Ansia' was so personal that I needed time to take some rest from the whole experience. I needed distance and the clearing of thoughts before I hit the new ideas. Back then, I couldn't even imagine the circumstances under which the music and words for the fourth major Mord'A'Stigmata release will be written. I was given a choice: either to go for an extreme emotional exposure or wait another two or three years for the works to commence. The creative hunger prevailed and so did the weird need of reopening the wounds, hoping that things would someday be as they used to.
"This is what this record is about. It is hard for me to call the music on 'Hope' black metal. Anyway, I get the impression that the term is frequently abused and given a wrong meaning nowadays. As usual, we came up with a mixture of styles to be named by people wiser than us. We play more with hearts than with heads and do not intend to play someone we are not. And that's actually what 'Hope' is, the music of pure emotions.”
The track listing for the album is:
1. Hope
2. The Tomb from Fear and Doubt
3. To Keep the Blood
4. In Less Than No Time More...

Apocalypse Orchestra Posts Third Studio Report
Swedish medieval metal outfit Apocalypse Orchestra released the third video studio in a series of reports for the upcoming debut record which is expected via Despotz Records in 2017. Details of the album have yet to be disclosed.
Apocalypse Orchestra was formed by mult-instrumentalists Mikael (Vocals, guitars, mandola, lute and cittern) and Erik (Hurdy gurdy, mandola, bagpipes, backing vocals) who developed a bond over their mutual love of the unlikely combination of folk music and doom metal. With a foundation of original music and lyrics the duo also decided to incorporate melodies stemming from as far back as the 11th century, the goal was to create a musical homage to a long gone era.
The songs tell stories of plagues, of hell and the senseless acts of war and suffering, all while weaving a romantic era thread combined with the crushing modern metal mentality that only Apocalypse Orchestra can deliver.
