Memoira Parts Ways With Guitarist

Finnish female-fronted metal band MEMOIRA has issued the following update:

"Unfortunately, we have to announce the departure of our guitarist Jani Haanpää. We wish Jani all the best in his future endeavours. Honkajoki [show on November 29] will be his going-away party. And hopefully we see you guys there having a great time and appreciate the last show with Jani on board. After Honkajoki, we are having a creative break during which we make new material and find a new solo guitarist!"

MEMOIRA's self-titled debut album was released in August via Nightmare Records.

The band's sound was previously described by the label as "epic melancholic metal that has progressive and gothic orchestral parts." According to Nightmare, MEMOIRA carries on "in the fashon of bands such as NIGHTWISH, EPICA, KAMELOT, WITHIN TEMPTATION, EVANESCENCE and LACUNA COIL."

MEMOIRA's video for the song "Liberation" can be viewed below. More...

Irons and Pulling Teeth Planning Split LP

Irons and Pulling Teeth Planning are planning a split 12" LP entitled "Grey Saviour." A release date and pre-ordering information will be announced shortly by label Deathwish Inc.

Irons, comprised of J. Bannon (Converge, etc), Dwid Hellion (Integrity, etc), and Stephen Kasner (Blood Fountains), has with this release "forged a pensive sonic reflection ripe with melancholy and despair," according to the label. "Electronic textures, haunting vocals, and unorthodox guitar work all dance together to create an unforgettable melodic portrait that is unlike anything out there today."

According to the label, the split is "a stylistic departure for Pulling Teeth, here they utilize this release to tread into deeper, more experimental, musical waters. The featured opus 'General Of Dark Hymns I & II' shows a new kind of dynamic emerging from their dark well of creative character. Slowing the pace only to crash down with a force merely hinted at in previous Pulling Teeth recordings. The release also features a J. Bannon (Converge, etc) remix of 'Dismissed In Time,' the epic closing track from their heralded 'Martyr Immortal' album."

"Joining the team are renowned Dutch producers Joost van den Broek (AFTER FOREVER) and Jochem Jacobs (TEXTURES). The combination of their influences is just what the band was looking for: heavy and powerful on one side, atmospheric and melodic on the other.

Loudness Drummer Munetaka Higuchi Passes Away

Munetaka Higuchi, drummer for Japanese heavy metal band Loudness, passed away yesterday in Osaka, Japan yesterday morning. He was 49 years old. He had been diagnosed with Hepatocellular Carcinoma in April of this year and undergone two rounds of chemotherapy treatment and an operation to remove part of his liver.

Higuchi himself posted the following message online, twelve days before his death: "It has been half a year since I was diagnosed with liver cancer. I am really sorry that the fans are worried. The cancer has become worse despite the fact that I have been taking care of my health, and I will need more time for my treatment. [Even after undergoing the] big operation to remove half of my liver, I still need more treatment. There are various risks and dangers involved with my condition, but I'll do my best to keep my spirits up and maintain my physical strength to fight this illness. I know it is still the middle of my treatment, but I just wanted inform you about my progress since the operation. Thank you very much for all the support."

Loudness was formed in 1981 by Higuchi and guitarist Akira Takasaki and were the first Japanese heavy metal act to be signed in the United States. The band have released over twenty studio albums to date, seven live albums and twelve compilation albums. The bands most recent gig was supporting Motley Crue in October of this year at Greater Tokyo Area's Saitama Super Arena.

Spineshank Posts Update On New Material

Reunited metal act Spineshank has posted the following message online:

"Ok guys, here is a bit of a progress report. Things are moving along pretty nicely, we have about half the record written. Some song titles are "I Am Damage," "Anger Denial Acceptance" and "The Reckoning". Our good friend Jay Baumgardner will be mixing some songs for us next week so we will post some new stuff up as soon as it is done. Jay co-produced Strictly Diesel and mixed Self Destructive Pattern, he is an awesome mixer and a part of the family so we are excited to have him back in the fold again. The writing is going pretty quickly considering that Jonny lives 1000 miles away and can only come out in 4 or 5 day streaks at a time. We are on track to have the new record written by the end of the year. We plan on writing about 20 songs and picking the best 10-12 songs for the record. We have also started rehearsing some of the old songs to get ready for touring early next year. We will get some of the old songs posted up on here as soon as Roadrunner gives us the ok. I have been trying to get approval from them for months but cant seem to get the rights to our own songs. Unbelievable. Thats all for now."

Some of the first people that ever supported Fuck The Facts by releasing split tapes and putting FTF on comps were from Italy, France & Germany. It's crazy that after all these years I might get to finally meet some of these people and lots of you that have written us over the years…….." "It's definitely gonna be a different experience, and we will do our best to make sure we can "Disgorge" Europe with the same viciousness that we have North America. See you all soon." More...

Has Velvet Revolver Found Their New Singer?

Reports has reached Classic Rock that Velvet Revolver are hoping to audition singer Phil Conalane from the band Million Dollar Reload. The singer was apparantly recomended to the band by former Guns N Roses drummer Steven Adler aswell as the band Stone Gods, who also tried to recruit Conalane.

The source claims: "Though a surprising choice, Phil is experienced but relatively unknown on the international stage, which would fit Velvet Revolver’s bill of fresh blood as they try to rebuild their career following the disappointing sales of their last album, Libertad, and the GN’R return that has left them reeling. Phil is also well known as a good songwriter, something that scuppered Velvet Revolver’s plans when previously they tried to bring in the less-than-prolific Josh Todd of BUCKCHERRY."

Candlemass Completes Mixing New Album

Candlemass bassist Leif Edling has posted the following message online:

"Yes, the album is ready! We’ve worked on it all autumn and it feels really good that it is completed. The sound is superfat, heavy as hell, and very organic/dynamic at the same time. Our friend Chris (Laney) has done a great job mixing it!! I personally think this album is the best one of the three we have released in the new millennium Easy!! It is bigger, better, louder and a bit more mature I must say!! It is our Heaven And Hell, hehe. And if you guys behave and eat your vegetables we just might be able to add a couple of sound-bits here on the C-mass site. Maybe the wait for the release in may next year will be easier. Check this page sometime before x-mass. The only thing that pisses me off is the fact that we can’t call it Hammer Of Doom, after one of the songs on it. A brand new stupid festival in Germany calls themselves that! Who spilled the beans??? Well, well…the albums absolutely KILLS and we will surely come up with a suitable name for it."

Persona Non Grata Signs To Sensory Records

Greek progressive metal act Persona Non Grata has signed to Sensory Records and will be releasing their debut album, "Shade In The Light" on February 24th next year. A statement from the label reads as follows:

"Greece has always had some of the most fervent metal fans in the world. Although the main interest has been so called “true metal” bands in the style of MANOWAR and IRON MAIDEN, progressive metal started to take hold of the country in the 90s. Bands such as DREAM THEATER and FATES WARNING routinely perform in Athens and both have released live CDs and DVDs from their Greek performances. Greek bands such as FRAGILE VASTNESS and Sensory’s own WASTEFALL have generated a buzz worldwide and the scene continues to expand. Persona Non Grata will surely continue this tradition of great progressive metal.

"Persona Non Grata’s formation began in 2003 when John Ioannidis (keyboards) invited Chris Gatsos (guitars) to join his group FATAL ERROR. It didn’t take long for John and Chris to realize that they had to move on to progressive metal music which was a mix of rock that John loved to play and heavy metal that Chris grew up with. In order to achieve this they had to change the band’s lineup. During this period they focused on writing the music, which would be the material for their first CD Shade In The Light. More...

Behemoth Frontman, Nergal Posts Tour Recap

Nergal, frontman of Polish black metal band Behemoth has posted the following message online:

"I’m writing this while sitting and waiting for our flight back to Poland from Amsterdam. I’m slowly “digesting” this experience from past few days and even though it was quite a struggle, big smile comes up on my face... I can honestly say that we’re happy and satisfied.

"The tour kicked off in Japan and it went great. We waited for ages to come down there but for some reason there was never enough interest from either the labels or promoters to organize Behemoth show or even license any of our previous records. I seriously started thinking that we suck, ha ha.

"But things changed a lot with our last album The Apostasy that was picked up by JVC. Creative Man Agency from Tokyo along with The Flames Arts from Belarus joined forces to made the impossible possible: we finally landed in Japan! First impression was seriously striking, it’s such an exotic place…everything, cultural differences to architecture were vast, and I’m sure none of us have ever seen anything like that before. Our stay was planned and organized with every detail and most importantly the show itself went really smooth…we gathered around 400 kids and the feedback couldn’t be disappointing at all. Japanese are fuckin’ sick and can seriously kick ass! I’m happy to finally see some following we’re finally gaining in this part of the world and it can only keep us motivated. More...
