Avantasia Taps Pretty Maids Vocalist Atkins
Avantasia mastermind Tobias Sammet announced the next special guest for the forthcoming LP "The Mystery of Time," this time its Pretty Maids vocalist Ronnie Atkins. The announcement reads as follows:
"After Biff Byford (Saxon), Michael Kiske (ex-Helloween, Unisonic), Arjen Lucassen (Ayreon, ex-Vengeance), Bruce Kulick (Grand Funk Railroad, ex-KISS, ex-Meat Loaf) and the German Filmorchestra Babelsberg another participent can now be announced: It's Pretty Maids vocalist Ronnie Atkins who will sing a role on the new Avantasia Metal Opera "The Mystery Of Time" (out in March 2013)."
Tobias commented on the addition of Atkins: "I have been a huge Pretty Maids fan since I was a teenager. I already asked Ronnie to be on the Metal Opera in 1999, but he was busy back then. Last year I saw Pretty Maids live, and they were a steam train on stage, unbelievable. After the show we met and Ronnie was a great guy. Finally after 13 years, I am really proud to have him on the new Avantasia album. And his kick-ass performance leaves no doubt: It was a great decision to ask him!" More...

Eight Bells To Release Debut LP
Oregon's Eight Bells will release the debut LP "The Captain’s Daughter" on February 19, 2013 via Seventh Rule Recordings. The album was produced by Billy Anderson (Sleep/Neurosis/Agalloch). The band's sound is described as an "eclectic offering presents four songs that weave elements of post-black metal and progressive rock together in a decidedly unique manner making for an alternately beautiful and terrifying listening experience."
Eight Bells features SubArachnoid Space alumni Melynda Jackson and Christopher Van Huffel. A native of rural Texas, Jackson grew up an only child. The isolated grasslands and windswept landscapes of her youth would later inspire her to evoke equally mysterious terrain through experimental guitar explorations and wordless vocalizations in SubArachnoid Space. SAS took Jackson far afield with a series of albums on Relapse and various indie labels, a split EP with Bardo Pond, tours with Acid Mother’s Temple, and a trip to Japan. Jackson put the band to bed after fifteen years in 2011 following the release of its final album, Eight Bells.
"Eight Bells (the band) continues in the tradition of heavy guitar exploration, adding a blackened dissonance to the mix and minimalist vocals. Jackson is accompanied by classically trained six-string bassist Haley Westeiner who inspires and also provides harmonic counterpoint to Jackson’s newly discovered vocal talents. SubArachnoid Space drummer Chris Van Huffel resumes the throne he occupied for ten years, bringing his thunderous, nuanced double kick playing with him. With this power trio, Jackson has found a group that brings focus and support to her unapologetically expressionistic experimental metal music."
Notes Jackson earnestly of The Captain’s Daughter: “I see this album as an attempt to communicate and exorcise. It is open to interpretation. Praise be to Chris and Haley for making it a whole transmission.” More...

True Widow Signs With Relapse
True Widow, the band referred to by Brooklyn Vegan as "reverb-drenched shoegaze," has signed with Relapse Records with an eye towards a late Spring release.
The band is currently recording at the Echo Lab in Argyle, Tex, reuniting with As High As The Highest Heavens And From The Center To The Circumference Of The Earth producer Matt Pence (Yuck, Jay Farrar).
"Returning to the Echo Lab just made sense," explained drummer Slim TX "It's where the previous albums have been recorded and it feels like home. The same goes for working with Matt. He allowed us to stay true to ourselves on our self-titled album and develop the sounds that would become our cornerstone for everything that has followed."
True Widow have released two previous albums: "True Widow" (2008) and "As High As The Highest Heavens And From The Center To The Circumference Of The Earth" (2011). Each release has built on the band's unique approach to the guitar-centric intersection of shoegaze and ambient pop, which the band self-described as "stonegaze," NPR described the band's sophomore release as "a warming headphone album for a bleak snowfall, moody and dreamy chords crushed by a rumbling low-end." Decibel Magazine said the album is "a droning, strung-out record that is, frankly, almost perfect." More...

Red Rose Streaming New Track
Israeli melodic power metal act Red Rose is streaming the new track "Don't Believe These Tales." The track appears on the forthcoming second LP "On the Cusp of Change," which is due for release on February 26, 2013.
Red Rose formed in 2010 in Netanya, Israel. Their music style turned out to be some sort of mixture of Melodic Hard Rock, Classic Heavy Metal and 'Pomp Rock,' playfully called among the band members 'good music.' When it came to choosing a name for the project, "Red Rose" wasn't argued much. It seemed to precisely represent the band's general vision: the beauty and romance of a dream along with the thorns of reality. When sketches were ready and it was time to rehearse and wrap up the material, everything came into place very quickly and the debut LP "Live The Life You've Imagined" became reality.
"On the Cusp of Change" was once again produced by Tommy Hansen at Jailhouse Studios, with Matan Shmuely (of Orphaned Land fame) sitting behind the drums. The album's artwork was created by Jobert Mello (Primal Fear/Sabaton/Benedictum).
The track list for "On the Cusp of Change" is as follows:
1. When Roses Faded
2. Chasing Freedom
3. King Of The Local Crowd
4. Original Sin
5. Alone In The Night
6. This Bitter World
7. Don't Believe These Tales
8. Seize The Day
