Middian Breaks Up, YOB Reforms

Oregon's Middian (i.e. Age Eternal) has officially called it quits. As you may recall, the group was embroiled in a lawsuit with a Wisconsin band called Midian regarding the use of their name. Said legal action has apparently taken its toll as the band has issued the following statement:

"Our lawsuit is finally coming to a close. It has been a hard year, and we could not have done it without the support of the metal community world wide and the time and money people donated to our cause. We are eternally in your debt. Sadly, the lawsuit came with a high cost to us personally and interpersonally. Scott Headrick is quitting the band and moving. Mike S felt he needed to back off from touring due to family and work/lack of work issues, cutting his touring commitment from 60-70 shows a year to a handful of shows, mostly local to the West Coast, for an indefinite amount of time, maybe permanently. This extreme change in direction, coupled with the immense stress of our lawsuit and inner conflicts in the band resulted in Scott's decision to move on with his life. Scott Headrick is the highest caliber of person. We mourn his loss, and support his need to take care of himself. We are very sad to share this news about Age Eternal, but are confident that it must and will open the doors for new music creation and growth. Will Lindsay and Mike S will continue to write music with the goal of recording and doing some shows, under another name, as a new band and not Age Eternal. And with Will’s now full-time commitment playing guitar with the immaculate Wolves In The Throneroom, people should be expecting to see him in their hometown in the USA and abroad very soon. Once again, we cannot thank the metal community and people who donated their money and time enough. We feel extremely fortunate to be a part of such a quality group of people, and we will pay your kindness and generosity forward."

With Middian now done, Mike Scheidt has reformed his old band, YOB, which broke up several years ago. Here's the official word:

"YOB is reforming to record a new album and do a limited number of shows. We have a number of new songs we are working on and our goal is to record in the Spring for a Summer 2009 release. We are very excited about this new material.

"YOB will be doing a very small amount of shows to support our new recording. We hope to do 2-3 shows on the west coast, 2-3 on the east coast, and maybe get over to the UK/Europe for a couple of shows if promoters over there feel it would be worth their $$ to bring YOB over for a very short run. We will not add any other shows to these except in rare instances.

Saros Signs With Profound Lore Records

Bay Area extreme metal band Saros has sign signed to Profound Lore Records. The band finds themselves within the tight circle of artistic Bay Area fervor alongside such acts as HAMMERS OF MISFORTUNE, LUDICRA, AMBER ASYLUM, ASUNDER, GRAYCEON etc.

Featuring members of Amber Asylum, WEAKLING, and THE BASTARD NOISE amongst its ranks, Saros’ musical vision is one that consists of melding several extreme metal influences together to create epic calculated hymns which combine influences from progressive and traditional metal, black metal, and chamber music respectively.

Following their “Five Pointed Tongue” debut, Saros gets more focused and ambitious with their latest release. Entitled “Acrid Plains,” the new album (produced and engineered by Billy Anderson) shows a growth and maturity that will make Saros one of the more prominent metal acts within the Bay Area alongside their aforementioned peers.

You can hear some samples of the band's material off the upcoming album at the band’s MySpace page.

Look for “Acrid Plains” to be one of Profound Lore’s first releases in 2009.

Malakian, Dolmayan Talk SOAD Hiatus and Scars

Timesonline writer Robert Collins recently sat down with Scars on Broadway members Daron Malakian and John Dolmayan to discuss System of a Down's hiatus and whether the band will reunite in the near future.

"We took a break before we broke up," admits Dolmayan. "After 12 years, it's not so much that you get tired of the people you're with, it's more that you don’t have an identity. I think System will co-exist with Scars. They will probably leapfrog each other."

"I don't know Jack White," adds Malakian, the guitarist and songwriter, "but I like what he does in the White Stripes. I've only heard a couple of songs from the Raconteurs, but I liked that, too. As artists, we don't want our music to be a brand like Coca-Cola. You want to scratch those creative itches: things that you couldn’t do in certain situations. There are things in Scars that aren't in System. I love metal, but I was taking a new direction. I wanted to express the side of me that likes Roxy Music, the Beatles and the Grateful Dead."

Now that having a second band almost makes sense, musicians are leaping on the opportunity to explore new avenues with new, and old, friends. But it’s an aside from Malakian that perhaps sheds the most light on this relatively new phenomenon. With record companies under more pressure than ever before, if profitable musicians want to release music under different names, labels are in no position to dissuade them.

"Columbia wanted the record, but they let us go out and shop it anyway," Malakian explains. "And once we shopped it, we said, 'Man, we don't want to be on Columbia any more.' Columbia don’t want to burn that bridge for when System returns, so they let us do what we want."

Rumors are circulating that the band will be reuniting to represent Armenia in next year's Eurovision song contest to be hosted in Russia, but this rumor has not yet been officially confirmed by the band.

Warbringer Hits The Road, Shoots New Video

After returning home from Germany's Wacken Open Air festival and touring throughout Europe alongside labelmates Sworn Enemy and All Shall Perish, L.A. thrash warriors WARBRINGER now set their sights back on North America as they prepare to embark on back to back tours. The first trek, which kicked off on Aug. 22nd, sees the group as direct support to the Finnish sensation Finntroll and the second run, which kicks off on Oct. 1st, as direct support to legendary thrash titans Overkill.

John Laux (guitars) states: "Thanks to everyone who saw us on the Metal Hammer stage at Wacken Open Air. There is nothing compared to hearing thousands of thrashers screaming 'Total War' louder than your own stage monitors. We loved the energy and can't wait for the next opportunity to slay the masses. We can't wait to get back on the road throughout North America with Finntroll and then Overkill, which means we are hitting a lot of places so be sure to check out the MySpace page because we are most likely coming your way. Thrash til death."

WARBRINGER just completed a new video for the vicious track, "At The Crack of Doom," with up-and-coming director Joe Hendrick. The clip is a savage, performance based video that unleashes a fury of aggression and all out thrash madness.

Hendrick states: "The aesthetic style and vibe of this video is drastically different from their previous video. We have numerous smooth, wide, crane and dolly shots that show off the location, resembling the look of the metal videos from the 80's."

Laux (guitars) further comments: "A brand new WARBRINGER video should be showing up online sometime in the middle of next month. Originally we wanted to shoot at a castle, but we ended up performing 'At the Crack of Doom' at a very old, evil and torn up building in the Mojave desert. This video is a performance piece like 'Combat Shock,' but we also had extras running around in hooded robes carrying torches as part of a post apocalyptic cult or something. Needless to say, after working on the project we are very excited for its release."
