Tales From The Pit: Joey Vera's Mosh Pit Flips
We've been talking to bands to get their best mosh pit stories. This one is from Joey Vera when he was on tour in 1986 with Armored Saint, opening for Metallica and WASP.
"Just about every night, whoever happened to be watching Metallica's set from side stage, got invited out to sing the 'DIE!' part at the end of Creeping Death. One night in Texas, there I was, hammered and waiting for my nightly invitation. Sure enough, I get the wink from my gracious host, Cliff Burton.
"On I go and give my best beer soaked "DIE!". After my part is played, I walk to the edge of the stage in front of Cliff's floor monitor, turn around to face him, and with all my strength I hurl myself in a back flip into the audience. Luckily the crowd takes pity on my poor aerial form and catches me. Then I find myself in a flurry of sweaty limbs as I begin to surf towards the front of the stage. Metallica's crew pulls my sorry ass out and back onto stage while Mr. Burton tops my score with a thumbs 'way' up. Good times."

"We are also happy to announce that our future home is now with Germanys label Twilight-Distribution (Disparaged, Koldbrann, Grind Inc., Requiem, Hatred). We needed a new record label and in the end Twilight won us over with their integrity as we already had a good cooperation with our last 2 albums."

"I talked to the Clear Channel people again last week and we are ready to go. We are going to do the first show from the Clear Channel station in San Diego, and I will hopefully be able to do an interview for the local San Diego Clear Channel Rock Channel. After that, I will determine what I need to make my studio ready to do the show.
"I am going to play music I like, music that influenced me, and ‘zingers’ - which are songs that you would never know that I liked (like the Beatles, or stuff like the Dead Kennedy's).

Shadowside Replaces Bass Player
Brazil's Shadowside has issued the following update about replacing their bassist and upcoming tour dates:
"So THIS is what the sun looks like during the day!! Hello, my babies in the dark! It is about 9:00am and I am putting the finishing touches on packing for the fun that waits in the States! We are all very excited about this first leg of the tour!
"Of course this tour hasn’t been without its bumps along the way. That’s what happens sometimes with venues, promoters, etc. They put a hold on a date, they send in their offers and contracts only to bail on them late in the game. Unfortunately it has happened on several shows thus far. Of course our manager, Sweet Lou. dove in and replaced most of the dates. One that concerns us is our ....Michigan.... date at TNT’S. It looks as if this show is going to be cancelled. We’ve already done some press for that show, but it seems our agent hasn’t been able to get an answer of whether or not the venue or promoter is going to stand behind his contract. Frankly, it is probably better that it happened BEFORE we showed up at the venue. *laughs* So is ANY OF YOU know of a venue CLOSE to the show in ....Michigan...., PLEASE contact 'Sweet Lou.' at GlamSLAMinc@aol.com , perhaps he can get another date RE-scheduled somewhere in the area…
"Now some other EXCITING news! Unfortunately things always change within a band and we are no different. Edu our bass player is no longer with us. On this leg of the tour we are proud to welcome NICK IX! You can check out Nicky at this location. Nick is a rhythm guitarist by trade (endorsed by Jackson Guitars), but when we needed a bass player, Nick didn’t even think twice…he offered and we gladly accepted. Nick is true metal in the purest sense of the word! At this time, Nick is a 'touring member' of SHADOWSIDE…we want to hear from YOU the fans when we’re out there what you think of the line up! Also, Nick will most likely be playing acoustic rhythm guitar with Rapha at our Hot Topic appearances…you didn’t FORGET about coming out to see us at the Mall have you???? More...

"We are sorry to those who were looking to see us in the next few weeks with Slipknot. Unfortunately Slipknot has cancelled the tour. This has forced us to cancel our headlining shows in Pocatello, ID and Sioux Falls, SD as well. We hope to make up the dates as soon as our touring schedule allows. We will still be playing tonight in Spokane, WA at the Big Dipper. Again we apologize to anyone who was planning on coming out, its completely out of our control. Thanks for understanding."
Dillinger Escape Plan Issues Recording Update
The Dillinger Escape Plan has posted two short teaser clips for their upcoming album, which can be viewed below. The band has also issued the following recording update:
"Ok....sorry for the lack of recent updates, but we've had our noses to the grind lately getting this record written, and haven't seen the light of day much. If you've been paying attention to our twitter accounts, you know that we've leaked TWO demo snippets so far. We usually demo the entire record pretty extensively before we enter the studio, so that we don't waste too time fiddling around once we get in there.
"We'll be using this myspace as well as our twitters to update you throughout the recording process, so stay tuned.
"Latest BIG news though, is that we are playing a show in Los Angeles to kick off the whole recording process. September 5th, we've been added to FYF Fest(formerly Fuck Yeah Fest!....but I guess the new abbreviation now makes it...Fuck Yeah Fest...Fest?). Get PSYCHED if you live around here. This means that for the first time in a long time...DEP and CONVERGE are gonna be playing together!!!! Other killer bands playing include Torche, Lightning Bolt, Fucked Up, and more. Don't miss out. It's only a $20 ticket, at the Los Angeles State Park in Downtown LA, and it's for a good cause! The fest aims to raise awareness of the possible closure of up to 100 State Parks due to recent California budget cuts. It's gonna be nice to play and have fun before the pure torture of recording starts. More...

Tim "Ripper" Owens To Appear On Avantasia Album
Tim "Ripper" Owens, vocalist of Yngwie Malmsteen's band and former Judas Priest voice, has recently been in the studio to sing his parts for the forthcoming Avantasia album, whose title is yet to be announced.
Tobias Sammet of Avantasia issued the following statement about the colloboration:
"I had this pretty heavy riff monster and I remembered a Judas Priest live-album with 'the new singer' on vocals. I listened again and when I heard him sing 'Metal Gods' and 'Painkiller' I knew that this was the voice I so desperately needed for the song. Tim is a cool guy and a scream machine. He makes his voice spit out the most aggressive high notes I have ever heard, while fully controlling it. I am so proud of the heaviest Metal tune I have written so far, and Tim has turned a good Heavy Metal song into the ultimate Heavy Metal Monster!"
Vader Posts Music Video Trailer Online
Vader has posted a teaser trailer online for the upcoming music video of their song "Never Say My Name," which can be viewed below. Vader also issued the following statement about the video clip:
"We started the video shooting on August 15, at about noon. That day we were in for the Last Supper and the slaughter of the Messiah's followers shots, while during the night we were to take some bluebox and Janus shots. It was quite an unusual date, as the same day in Wroclaw the masses came to see a light-and-water show taking place just 200 meters from the place of our shooting the 'Bible scenes'. Lots of people were wondering 'What's being shot here? A new TV series? The Bible stories? ...or maybe a Discovery program?' Despite 12 hours of hard work and constant stage make-up changes we managed to finish before 1 a.m. We went through it without a bloodshed - well, despite the Last Supper scene ...but the blood was a fake ;-) The next day we took the martyr shots and the Romans' armament ones, which were crucial for 'Necropolis'. Sunday. The unbearable heat and another couple of hours in the nearby gravel pit. It wasn't so easy that day... The owner of the place, who at first was eager to rent it to the Inbornmedia crew, found it enough when it came to the crucifixion, burning and the transformation of the Messiah into Janus. My roars and the burying crucifix brought about an immediate response of the security guards. They called the police and we were supposed to leave the gravel pit at once... Fortunately, we managed to 'steal' one more hour before the cops arrived. There only remained ashes. And we, together with the Romans, came back to the hotel at about....2 a.m. And there were still the final scenes left. These we're going to finish on tomorrow....but in a different place."
The track is from their upcoming album "Necropolis," which will be released in North America on September 22. More...

Judas Priest Posts U.S. Tour Report
British heavy metal legends Judas Priest has recently completed their headlining tour of the United States, during which they performed their classic album, "British Steel" from start to finish. A message from the band reads as follows:
"Just finished our US Tour - we're all going to take a short rest now before we head off to Japan!! The US shows were fabulous and the audience reaction was fantastic!! A big thank you to everyone who came to the shows - we had a great time - our only sorrow was that WHITESNAKE were not able to finish the last few shows with us due to David's very bad throat infection. He's getting better now so hopefully we'll all be working together again sometime in the not too distant future! See you next time round!!"
Mokshya Writing New Material
Arizona progressive metal/rock band Mokshya has issued the following update announcing that they are writing new material again:
"Well, it’s been an amazingly crazy year and a half, and now its time to climb back into the heart cave and recreate ourselves. The lovelution is all about the evolution of both our individual and collective consciousness. Life and art are synonymous, and like a river must stay in constant motion to stay alive. Stagnant water can support no life, and the stagnant soul can support no creativity. It is because of this that we have vowed as musicians to push ourselves to evolve our sound with every new album. It’s time now to shed our skin, step back out into the void, and rediscover mokshya. See you on the other side! VIVA LA LOVELUTION!!!"
You can check out some of the band's older material on their MySpace player.

SFM Guitarist's Skydiving Tattoo Video Available
On August 11th, Zeke Galt of Canada's Surefire Machine took his band's motto - "Have a good time, All the time" - to a whole new level by getting tattooed while plummeting to the Earth from 11,000 feet in the air. The stunt, aimed at promoting his band took place at the Edmonton Sky Dive Center and witnessed the thrill seeker jumping out of an airplane and getting the initials of his band - SFM - tattooed on his forearm. Adding to the adrenaline, the 'artist' was a professional skydiver and not a professional tattoo artist.
"Everyone's been asking me what could possibly drive someone to jump out of a plane and get tattooed, and the answer is simple: How many people can say they've done something like this? Apparently none in North America, and that feels unbelievable - every time I look at the initials I can't help but be stoked," commented the guitarist and added, " Only problem now is, I don't know what to follow it up with!"
Watch the video below.
Successfully completing the feat, Zeke has set a North American record for the first tandem free fall tattoo as well as a World Record.
Surefire Machine is on their third cross-Canada escapade, titled the "Sinnin’ & Grinnin’" tour, to promote their self titled EP. Dates are as follows, with more to be announced.
