Infernal Tenebra Recruits New Bassist

Croatian death/thrash metallers Infernal Tenebra just announced the addition of bassist Viktor Sincic to the lineup as a replacement for recently departed member Paolo Grižonic. Infernal Tenebra comments:

"Paolo started the band in 1999 and participated in the creation of four albums, toured with the band and was involved in countless battles. He is credited on the latest album and we are very thankful for his contributions. Like all ex-members, he’ll remain in the Infernal Tenebra family, and we’ll honor this legacy with all our strengths.

"Following the recent departure of Paolo Grižonic in the post-production phase of our upcoming album 'As Nation Fal' due to personal reasons, the band sought for the best possible solution. One thing was clear, whoever was gonna be in charge of the bass section of Infernal Tenebra, he has to put in hard work and dedication in order to be where we are. We needed someone that could enhance and add some new and fresh vibes to the band's sound.

"Viktor stepped in at the right time, and it basically happened overnight. Our longtime video producer and friend Igor Malecic (Meisterwerk Productions) suggested him and we clicked immediately. Viktor is a young, motivated and skilled musician, with a great bass tone. Adding intricate bass lines will definitely influence our songwriting and we’re looking forward to work on the new material. We are delighted to have him on board and look forward to tour with him.

"At the moment Infernal Tenebra is preparing for the upcoming shows in 2016. First festivals are already announced, and worldwide touring activities will follow the album release. With 'As Nations Fall' coming out on January 22nd, 2016, we’re eager to get on stage and rock these tunes to our fans and friends around the globe." More...

Damnation Plan Issues Recording Update

Last month Damnation Plan announced plans to record the follow-up to "The Wakening," and now the group has issued the following studio update:

"So, previous week we got the drums recorded for the new album! A very busy and intense week as was pretty much expected. Once again we made sure we got all the needed recorded, including a couple of extras and alternative takes (just in case for possible final arrangements / adjustments). Eventually we had a bit over 3 days to record 12 songs, the rest 2 days was spent for micing / searching sounds / battling with technical issues / editing etc.

"Plan was to document as much of the action also on video, which we did with our best ability alongside the main point - getting everything needed on tape, which pretty much takes all the focus.

"An extra day wouldn't have hurt again for that! Still haven't had time to go through all the footage properly enough to figure out how to exactly put it out for you, but in meantime here's a couple of improvised random fills and beats from a studio day warmup/soundcheck for your enjoyment! More coverage to follow! Next week we'll begin tracking the guitars!" More...

Metal Bands Express Support For Paris

Since the ISIS-led terrorist attacks in Paris that have left at least 129 dead, bands from across the globe have come come online to express their support for the people of France.

It's no surprise that many metal band actually played the same venue (the Bataclan) that was assaulted Friday night in the attack at the Eagles Of Death Metal show. Below are several longer messages left by metal and hardcore bands about the situation.

For those with strong stomachs, footage has also come online shot just outside the venue during the attack as show-goers fled from the terrorist gunmen.

Xandria: "Hand in hand for love, not hate. Today we wanted to share news and updates about our music with you - but like you all we too are left speechless. When a scene of terror hits you so close to home you truly feel how fragile the world is and how scarce mankind being united has become. As touring musicians, we had been playing yesterday's scene of terror, 'Le Bataclan' in Paris, multiple times ourselves. Today it's hard to imagine that a place where we found happiness in numerous occasions, within minutes became a house of horror. Violence and war are never an answer! " More...

Sunday Old School: Hammerfall

It always feels when looking through the Sunday Old School archives that power metal is an area that gets severely neglected. Of course, there have been some of the big names covered such as Helloween and Blind Guardian, but such acts are few and far between the likes of Napalm Death and Testament. So this week, we’re taking a step to rectify this by focusing one of the most popular bands in the history of power metal, Hammerfall.

The band was formed in 1993 by guitarist Oscar Dronjak, following his departure from extreme metal band Ceremonial Oath, who invited his former bandmate Jesper Strömblad (who had also just formed his own band, In Flames) to join him as the drummer. They were soon joined by bassist Johan Larsson and Niklas Sundin (who were soon replaced by Fredrik Larsson and In Flames guitarist, Glenn Ljungström,) as well as Dark Tranquillity vocalist, Mikael Stanne. Because of the members time mostly being spent with their other bands, Hammerfall was treated as a side project for the most part and had few original songs of their own, mainly performing covers by bands such as Judas Priest and Alice Cooper .

They mostly performed at a local music competition called Rockslaget, which they reached the semi finals of in 1996, at which point Stanne was unable to perform with the band and so, with the initial plan of making him a temporary member, Hammerfall brought in singer Joacim Cans, who impressed them enough that although the group didn’t make the final, he was made the new vocalist on a permanent basis after the show. The band started taking themselves a little more seriously after and recorded a short live performance, which eventually earned them a record deal with the Dutch label Vic Records. More...
