Fun Fun Fun Fest 2015 Day One: Skinny Puppy

2015 marked the ten-year anniversary of Austin’s favorite variety festival, Fun Fun Fun Fest. As with past years the festival hosted multiple color-coded stages of genres including rap, indie rock, electronic and comedy. Also, skate ramps and a wrestling ring were on hand. Games were placed throughout Auditorium Shores park to maximize the element of fun. This being Metalunderground.com, though, these following reports will focus on the Black Stage where punk and metal took place.

The forecast called for rain on the first day so many of the attendees were dressed for the weather. Fortunately, it only drizzled. Nothing was the first band I took in on the Black Stage. The Philly-based act released “Guilty of Everything” in 2014 via Relapse Records. They had a nineties alternative sound that fit well with many of the artists at FFF this year. Their guitar sound was noisy, too, which they’ve been branded as a noise rock outfit (another 90s-ism). They sounded good but didn’t do much to keep my interest. More...

Pit Stories: The Polish Freight Container

The pit is where metal thrives, and there's a million and one stories to be found there, from fans who've had too many and decide to throw down to bands hitting the road for the first time and experiencing the trials and tribulations of touring.

For this week's Pit Story, guitarist Richard Powley from instrumental metal band Telepathy shared a story of performing live in Poland for the first time... inside a freight container. Powley had this to say:

Our pit story comes from one of many interesting shows during Telepathy's first European tour back in 2012. Having had our debut EP “Fracture” receive glowing reviews from across the continent, we were offered a couple of support shows by our friends in Djevera in eastern Germany and the Czech Republic. Not wanting to waste the opportunity, I quickly arranged three additional concerts in Poland, with the first of these being in Gdynia.

As is sometimes the case with DIY tours, we had an alarming email saying the venue for the Gdynia concert had closed down while we were on the road, and the promoter was looking for a new venue. When we arrived, the promoter (our good friend Ola) had managed to secure a DIY space in Sopot, the neighboring town in the tri-city area. What we found were two freight containers, one on top of the other, repurposed into some kind of lecture hall for arts students. Our show took place in the upper container, and with the PA quickly mounted on top of foosball tables and the venue quickly filling, we knew we were going to have a great, if chaotic, show.

Crowds in Poland are wild, and within the first songs a pit had opened up and crowdsurfers were making their way over to the makeshift stage. By the middle of the set, the venue was a complete sweatbox and the floor had begun to bow under the weight of the crowd. Watching this tiny freight container bend under the weight of a packed out Polish crowd was certainly alarming, but made for one the most intense experiences on the tour.

By the end of the set, and due to lack of ventilation in the venue, the onstage microphone had begun to shock me whenever I approached it to address the crowd. The electrics in the freight container obviously weren’t built to withstand metal concerts, and by the end of the night we had a couple of burnt out fuses in our amps.

As we were leaving, a small man - immaculately presented in a full suit and looking rather nervous from the destruction of the venue - came up to us. He was the owner of the hall. Surprisingly, he had loved the show and after we had settled up he offered us all a lap on the go-kart arena he was also running. So, before we set off to our sleeping place for the night, those of us sober enough ended the night racing laps in the dark. A memorable first time in Poland for sure.

Colectiv Club Fire Death Toll Reaches 45

At the end of October, Goodbye To Gravity played a record release show at the Colectiv Club in Bucharest in which dozens were killed and hundreds injured when a fire broke out.

According to a new story from Classic Rock, the death toll has now reached 45, with Goodbye To Gravity's drummer Bogdan Enache passing away yesterday. An excerpt from the story reads:

He was the third member of the Romanian band to die, after their pyro display caused a blaze in which over 160 others were injured on October 30. Enache’s heart failed while he was being transported to Switzerland for burn treatment. Medical crew spent 70 minutes in attempts to keep him alive.

Guitarists Vlad Telea and Mihai Alexandru both died in the club, while vocalist Andrei Galut remains in a serious condition in a Netherlands hospital, and bassist Alex Pascu is recovering from surgery in Romania. 95 others remain in medical establishments across Europe.

Colectiv owner Alin Anastasescu and two associates were arrested and charged with homicide on November 2. Romanian prime minister Victor Ponta and his government resigned as a result of public reaction to the tragedy.

Metal groups from across the globe have reacted with shock to the tragedy, with Iceland's Skalmold the latest to issue a statement. The band comments:

"Skálmöld played the Club Colectiv last February and has played in beautiful Romania both before and since then. We have made great friends in promoters, club owners, local bands and of course the heartwarming fans. We lost many in this terrible accident and others are hurt. We are all hurt, the whole family. Words cannot change anything but we want you to know that we are thinking of you and that we will be coming back to Romania again asap. Take care of the ones who are hurt, remember those who lost their lives and stay strong. See you soon."

Meadows End Parts With Guitarist

Swedish outfit Meadows End just issued the following announcement about parting ways with guitarist Rikard Öqvist:

"We're sad to announce that Rikard has decided to leave Meadows End. He feels that his PhD studies and current life situation does not give him the spare time needed to fulfill his duty in Meadows End. The decision is entirely Riks, and the rest of us can and will do nothing but support him in his decision.

"Rik is one of the, or even perhaps THE, most diverse and talented musicians that we have ever had the opportunity to play with in Meadows End. He's also an amazing guy with a great personality and when he contacted us to let us know he was interested in the lead guitarist spot, we did not hesitate or even consider anyone else.

"We will lose an amazing guitarist but we'll forever have an amazing friend (and tour driver?! ;)). He will be surely missed and it will probably show on future creations as we can remember his remarkable solos, his Chapman Stick on Insurrection, his violin on Heathens' Embrace and the orchestrations on Clench the Feet of Fools just to name a few... Randy Blythe Assaulted In Dublin

Maybe Randy Blythe should stop leaving the country, as he's again run afoul of the locals, this time in Ireland. Blythe updated his Instagram account with this post about being attacked in Dublin:

"Sometimes doing what you love comes at a price: here's the Samuel Beckett bridge in Dublin, Ireland. Last night around midnight I walked one block away from my hotel to take some long exposures - right after I shot this very frame, I looked up & saw 5 or 6 teenage dudes (16 to 18 year olds?) in hoodies & track pants spreading out around me. 'Well, crap, I guess it's on' I thought.

"I started stepping quickly into the street away from the little cul-de-sac where I was (it was a bad spot to be trapped), trying to keep my eye on all of them at the same time. One kid drew up to my left getting close & BLAM - someone else hit me in the head from behind with something (I think they had a stick or whatever) - I saw stars for a second, then I heard car horns & a cabbie was driving at these kids & I was standing in the street trying to shake it off, because that little fucker had rang my bell pretty good.

"Like all cowards & weaklings all over the world, they came at me in numbers and struck from behind. I never even had a chance to smash one of the little shits because the cabbie (thank you, whoever you are) scattered them while I was regaining my wits. So now my glasses are gone (but I have contacts), my new Surf City hat w/the Black Flag bars is gone (but I brought another hat), my new e-cig is gone (but I have others), & I have a split open elbow & a bit of a headache (but it could have been much, much worse - I could have caught a knife). Vorna Posts "Yksin" Video

The Finnish group Vorna just released a new single titled ”Yksin” (translated ”Alone”) from upcoming new album “Ei valo minua seuraa” (“No Light Follows Me”), which will be released on December 4, 2015 through Inverse Records. Check out the music video below.

As the name might suggest, the “Yksin” music video displays extremely dark and melancholic soul landscapes in a very rich visual package. As a song ”Yksin” represents slower material of the new album. Director-guitarist Arttu Järvisalo comments on the new clip:

“I think a few years we mulled it over and over - should we do it or not? Even before the song material of the new album was finished, it was quite clear for me that we would do the video for 'Yksin,' if any video at all. Right from the very early version of the song its atmosphere and the structure painted me strong mental images that eventually concurred with the thoughts of our vocalist Vesa – the main writer of the song. Having a direct influence from the song’s lyrics, video is basically a story about inner healing - how deep into the water can your mind drag you before you can get back to the surface?" More...

B.O.A.N. Details New Album "Waiting For A Visit"

Austrian "poetic rock" act B.O.A.N. (Bed of a Nun) will issue the debut album "Waiting For A Visit" on December 4th via Pure Rock Records, a division of Pure Steel Records. Pre-order phase will begin on November 20th via Pure Steel Records' webshop.

B.O.A.N. is bringing the singer-songwriter style back to the present – with heavy elements, but at all times charged with emotions. Music for the quiet listener and poet, music for the heavy rocker late at night.

Founded just last year in Salzburg by the Austrian rock icons Günter Maier (ex-U8, ex-Stygma IV, ex-Crimson Cult) and Lem Enzinger (ex-U8, ex-Schubery, ex-No Bros, ex-Dos Bastardos) and then completed by Alex Hilzensauer and Peter Bachmayer to form the band, B.O.A.N. presents twelve gems of songwriting on the debut album. The songs are musical conversions of twelve poems written Enzinger. Eleven are based on his personal near death experience, with the twelfth dedicated to the Austrian painter Anton Christian, whose paintings had an essential influence to the development of this album.

Lem Enzinger was virtually able to win over the last line-up of Crimson Cult for his musical vision, because bassist Hilzensauer and drummer Bachmayer were also part of the final line-up. BIn contrast, B.O.A.N. play melancholic rock – and with Enzinger’s vocals adding a Johnny Cash flair. However, with songs like "Bullet Thoughts" and "Jesus On a Bicycle," there is enough tracks that break the acoustic boundaries allowing the electric guitar to shine. These songs are complimented perfectly by rhythmical, but very interesting tracks "Deathless While" and "Frozen."

The complete track listing for "Waiting For A Visit" is:

1. Frozen
2. Jesus On A Bicycle
3. Howl
4. Face In The Clouds
5. What Is…
6. Downstairs
7. Marble Beauty
8. Deathless While
9. Bullet Thoughts
10. Rebel Boy
11. Autumn Train
12. The Last Song More...
