Housecore Horror Film Festival 2015 Day Three

Day Three of Phil Anselmo’s Housecore Horror Film Festival in San Antonio, Texas started like day two at the Holiday Inn where the film portion of the festival took place. Just like the last two years, I made sure to watch at least one film. It’s difficult to take in a film as there are so many great bands to catch, but having to be over at the hotel for interviews, I figured get there early and catch a film, so I checked the schedule and saw that a showing of Gwar’s home video “Skulhedface” was playing. Don Drakulich, aka Sleazy P. Martini, provided commentary.

Short (the heals he wears as Sleazy really boast his height, not to mention his ten-pound hair piece) and wearing glasses and short brown hair, Drakulich started the film off with a slide show presentation where he talked about how he created many of Gwar’s costumes with the help of other members. In fact, most of the celebrities were his creations. He detailed how most of the characters/props were made with silicon. He also told how the story of how Sleazy P. Martini, Gwar’s “fucking manager,” came to life. There were two Sleazys before him known as Sluggo P. Martini that didn’t work out. Tony Clifton and Jersey cops with disco hair were the inspiration for this character. He lent commentary on “Skulhedface,” a hilarious film based on the music of “This Toilet Earth,” that also starred Jello Biafra and Sabastian Bach. Drakulich left after the presentation and returned in full costume for fans to get autographs and pictures. More...

Spinebreaker Posts New Single Online

San Jose-based Spinebreaker has unloaded the maiden single from upcoming debut "Ice Grave" LP with the gory torrent "River Of Pain."

Spinebreaker's "Ice Grave" debut provides a soundtrack of raw, sonic death-metal annihilation in a world of human filth, greed, and corruption. Having slithered into the Bay Area hardcore and metal community over the past two years, the band's explosive blend of European death metal is fueled through a tendency for intense-as-fuck live performances and love for an array of d-beat, punk, and hardcore.

Creator-Destructor will issue "Ice Grave" on 12" vinyl and through all digital outlets on January 15, 2016. Pre-orders have gone live right here. More...

Eight Bells Streams New Song

Eight Bells returns with sophomore album "Landless," coming February 12, 2016 via Battleground Records.

From Portland, Oregon, Eight Bells is the trio consisting of guitarist/vocalist Melynda Jackson, formerly of SubArachnoid Space, bassist/vocalist Haley Westeiner, and new drummer Rae Amitay, also of Immortal Bird and Thrawsunblat.

"Landless" was recorded and mixed by Billy Anderson (Neurosis, Leviathan) and mastered by Justin Weis (Pallbearer, Agalloch). You can now stream album track "Hating" in the player below.

Conceptually, "Landless" is a sequel to its predecessor. Where "The Captain's Daughter" was about a person lost at sea, "Landless" is about that same person returning and finding there is no one to return to – a meditation on the fundamental solitude and nothingness of living.

Anvil Releasing New Album

Anvil will release the confidently titled "Anvil is Anvil" on February 26, 2015 via SPV/Steamhammer.

"We're sometimes criticized for never changing," guitarist and vocalist Lips explains. "But why should we change something we're renowned for? Isn't it much more important to stay faithful to yourself? To do what you do best? The idea behind our latest album is: we are what we are, and that's how it's going to stay!"

"Anvil is Anvil" presents Lips, drummer Robb Reiner and new bassist Chris Robertson in a thoroughly magic metal moment. Lips had this to say: "Time will tell whether this album is the absolute pinnacle of our career. But I would already refer to it as 'gaining the momentum.' The year 2013 was a perfect new start for Anvil. We were touring, went on to write the new material, toured again and returned to compose some more. During that time, the new line-up gelled into a real unit. The arrival of Chris was just as significant for us as the film back in 2008. He helped me enormously with my vocal lines, which is why my voice sounds better than ever on stage and also in the studio." More...

Housecore Horror Film Festival 2015 Day Two

Day two started at the Holiday Inn. The 7th floor of the Holiday Inn hosted the film portion of the festival. There were also a number of vendors associated with the films there. Angelcorpse guitarist Gene Palubicki was one of the vendors on hand. He starred in the movie “American Guinea Pig: Bloodshock,” the second film in the “American Guinea Pig” series. This film had a major buzz about it. Many fans I talked to expressed a desire to see this film and according to Palubicki the Zombie Room wasn’t big enough to accommodate all interested parties. The event featured a Q & A with director Marcus Koch and producer/screenwriter Steven Biro and was moderated by Bill Moseley (“Texas Chainsaw Massacre II, House of 1,000 Corpses).

The band schedule for both the Aztec and Korova was different than the night before when Korova started early in the day, ended, the Aztec started and then the Korova hosted the last band at 12:30 AM. Today, the Korova started at 6 PM and ran concurrently with the Aztec. Austin d-beat punkers Krigblast opened Korova. More punkisms came via Chicago, Illinois’ Kill It Again and many fans gushed at seeing veterans, Fang. The Aztec hosted a day filled with punk rock, too, starting with Poison Idea, Dropdead and Negative Approach. And the grindcore of Agoraphobic Nosebleed and Cripple Bastards also fit into the punk’s gnarled family tree. More...

Mortalicum Issues Fourth Studio Album

Swedish doom rockers Mortalicum released the fourth studio album "Eyes of the Demon" today via Metal on Metal Records. The new album proves their quality and consistency in the style blending doom, early '80s heavy metal and '70s hard rock.

The album's artwork - shown below - contains a fragment of the "Lucifer" artwork by Francesco Scaramuzza, an Italian artist from the XIX century, known for his illustrations for Dante's "Divine Comedy."

Metal On Metal Records commented on the album: "They definitely have a knack for memorable melodies, groovy riffs and damn fine guitar solos, and they perform with natural ease and finesse. As always with Mortalicum, the production is one of the brightest points - nice organic sound that is like a balm for the ears of those who are fed up with modern plastic production. For these guys it's not the image but only the music that matters, and when you hear it, it's very clear it's coming straight from their hearts. They give a nod musically toward BLACK SABBATH, GRAND MAGUS, SPIRITUAL BEGGARS, RAINBOW, TROUBLE, DEEP PURPLE, THIN LIZZY, CANDLEMASS or SAMSON, but at the same time they have the ability to put their own identity to their songs."

A promo clip for "Eyes of the Demon" album (featuring a fragment of "Iron Star") can be viewed below.

The track list is:

1. King of the Sun
2. Eyes of the Demon
3. Iron Star
4. Beneath the Oak

Arkham Witch Releases "I Am Providence"

U.K. traditional/doom metal act Arkham Witch issued the third full-length studio album "I Am Providence" today via Metal on Metal Records.

Vocalist Simon Iff commented: "It's definitely a continuation in the style of 'The Lord of R'lyeh' and 'Kult of Kutulu' - that kind of fun take on the pulpy side of Lovecraft and a sheer musical celebration of the man and his imagination and legacy in popular culture rather than an attempt to imitate in music his cosmic viewpoints and eldritch atmospheres."

Guitarist Aldo Doom added: "I just want to add on behalf of myself and the rest of the gang that this has been one fun album to do. I don't want to scare all our fans and give too much away, but it's going to sound a lot different to our previous releases. We are NOT changing our style or wanting to progress into something different. Simon just simply started writing the songs for the album in a very cool different approach and the rest of us went with the flow! The result... well, if Lovecraft was around today, he'd be cruising around in his car, blasting out this album full volume and banging his head!" More...
