The tracks "Nadir" and "Expansion and Collapse" showcase the wider range that Byzantine has pursued on its newest release. This album is one hell of a ride!"

The follow-up to 2005's "...And They Shall Take Up Serpents," "Oblivion Beckons" was again recorded with producer Aaron Fischer and will feature art by longtime BYZANTINE collaborator Donnie Searls. The song listing for "Oblivion Beckons" is as follows:

Shadows Fall Announces Two Tour Changes

Shadows Fall has announced two date changes on the upcoming Operation Annihilation tour, a co-headlining trek with Static X also featuring 3 Inches of Blood and Divine Heresy. The two dates both concern House of Blues venues positioned on property owned by the Walt Disney company.

The October 20 date to take place at House of Blues in Orlando, FL has been cancelled, and the October 31 date has moved from the House of Blues in Anaheim, CA to the Galaxy Theatre in Santa Ana, CA.

Shadows Fall frontman, Brian Fair, recently posted the following message on the band's MySpace page:

"Well my friends, it is sad to say but it looks like Mickey can't handle the metal. We have been informed that the Disney company has decided to cancel all metal shows taking place at the House Of Blues on Disney property in both Anaheim CA. and Orlando FL. I for one am surprised that Disney isn't down with the metal. After all, what is more metal than freezing the decapitated head of your founder and having secret security death squads lurking beneath the underworld of an amusement park? This is a huge disappointment for us as we have always had amazing sold out shows at both clubs. We will be moving the Anaheim show to the Galaxy in Santa Ana, and cancelling the Orlando date completely. In the meantime try and synch up your copies of Reign In Blood with any animated Disney classic. Maybe the combination with re-animate old Walt from his cryogenic state and have him get metal back in these clubs!!!"

Ticketholders to the Orlando, FL show will be eligible for refunds. Plans are in the works for a new show in Orlando at another location. Stay tuned for details. Tickets for the October 31 Anaheim, CA show will now be honored at the new venue in Santa Ana.

Forest Stream Signs To Candlelight Records

Four years passed since the release of FOREST STREAMS' first album on Elitist Records. Since then, Elitist records ceased its operations and left FOREST STREAM looking for a new deal while working on new material. While contemplating several offers, Candlelight Records proposed a three-album deal and FOREST STREAM happily accepted.

According to the release, "The material for the second album, "The Crown of Winter," is shaping up to be something remarkable and truly worth listening to. Mixing duties are to be handled by Brett Caldas-Lima (To-Mera, Kalisia, etc). Taking the symphonic and epic overload of the Norwegian black metal scene and combining it with a seriously emotional core of classic doom, FOREST STREAM ’s unique take on the genre is set to explode."

You can check out some of Forest Stream's material on their Myspace page.

Misery Signals To Film "Anchor" Video

Milwaukee, WI's metalcore act MISERY SIGNALS is teaming up with Hurley International to shoot a video for their song "Anchor", which will include live footage of their show tonight at Chain Reaction in Anaheim, CA. The video, filmed by Hurley's production company SPKR Entertainment (Soren), will be done with four cameras to capture the band's fantastic live energy. It will also include footage of the group skateboarding in Hurley's brand new skate facility.

Already huge fans of Hurley, the members of MISERY SIGNALS are very excited to be doing a video with the company. Vocalist Karl Shubach states, "I like to think of myself as a skateboarder, and anytime I'm on the road, when we have an opportunity, we'll get our boards out of the back of the van and roll around. We're also big fans of Hurley clothes, and can't wait to get into their warehouse."

MISERY SIGNALS is currently on a full U.S. headlining tour with THE AGONY SCENE, EMMURE, and SKY EATS AIRPLANE. This will be their last tour before they start recording the new album, so filming of the video for "Anchor", which comes off the group's most recent release "Mirrors", is a symbolic ending for the album.

Devian Announce New Bassist

Swedish melodic death/black metallers DEVIAN — who feature in their ranks former MARDUK members Legion (vocals) and Emil Dragutinovic (drums) after their departure from MARDUK — have posted the second "webisode" documenting the recording process for the group's debut album, "Ninewinged Serpent", due on October 22 via Century Media Records. Watch the three-and-a-half-minute clip below.

In other news, Legion has issued the following update:

"We are pleased to announce that in our ranks we now have one of my oldest brothers in arms, namely Roberth Karlsson [on bass] who some of you might recognize for his previous work in EDGE OF SANITY. I'm thrilled to work with Roberth again since it was with him I had my first black metal band 16-17 years ago, and to now hook up again after all this time for new metal onslaughts in DEVIAN feels fucking awesome.

"Our lead guitarist Marcus [Lundberg] has chosen to step off the ship due to personal reasons. The lead guitar duties are now handled by Tomas Nilsson who played bass on 'Ninewinged Serpent'. We wish Markus the best of luck for the future, and welcome aboard, Robert!!"

"Ninewinged Serpent" was recorded at Sweden's Art Decay Studio. Mixing duties were handled by Fredrik Nordström at Studio Fredman (AT THE GATES, ARCH ENEMY, DIMMU BORGIR). The cover artwork was created by Greece's master of dark visuals Seth (PARADISE LOST, SOILWORK, OLD MAN'S CHILD).

"Ninewinged Serpent" track listing:

01. Serenade For The Fallen [Intro]
02. Dressed In Blood
03. Heresy
04. Scarred
05. Suffer The Fools
06. Fatalist
07. Gemini Is The Snake
08. Instigator
09. Remnant Song
10. Ninewinged Serpent

Regarding the upcoming CD, Legion said, "It's a pummeling blackened death thrasher, where we really tried to challenge ourselves and bring fresh elements to the music compared to our efforts in previous projects, and I'd say we managed to achieve that. What at first looked to be mine and Emil's continuation of 'World Funeral' grew into a much more multifaceted sound and we loved taking it in that direction and really making it all it could be. It's no-bullshit raving metal straight from the heart charged with uncontrollable anger, haunting melodies and bone crushing heaviness. It's got a lot of power and soul and we are all extremely proud of what we’ve managed to achieve."

Skullshifter Begin Work On New CD

New Jersey-based metal band SKULLSHIFTER has begun work their second CD, a full-length entitled Inner Demons.

Guitarist/Engineer CJ Scioscia had the following to say about the upcoming release:

"This past weekend we gathered at my studio, Le Chateau Bow Wow Recording, and started tracking. We've had a lot of fits 'n' starts over the past year, as we were scheduled to start principle recording no less than 5 times. Every time we were foiled at the last minute. I'm glad we never made a posting until we actually started.

Dan (Davie) cut his drums to all 9 songs - no click tracks and he f**kin' nailed 'em!! No cheesing on the double-bass parts, no fixing in ProTools. His tracks are live, and they feel and sound great. We were so prepared for this that he did them all on the 1st or 2nd take. We probably took more time to set-up his kit and get the sounds than it took for him to play the songs. Preparation is a beautiful thing...

Next up are the rhythm guitars. I will get crackin' on those in the next couple of days, and Tom will start his on Monday. I'd like to get them done ASAP, but it'll have to be done between all the sessions I have coming up. However, we will be moving quick on this.

Here are the songs that we put down: 'Breaking Point', 'Day In The Sun', 'Etched In Sand', 'Exploiter', 'Forward Rearview', 'Last Mistake', 'The New Conspiracy', 'Strain', and 'Veil Of Deception'. These will all make the album, although we've not decided on a running order. I believe the CD will be around 45 minutes long - classic 2-sided vinyl album length.

The title will be Inner Demons. That was what Here In Hell was supposed to be called, but once we changed that from a full-length to an EP, we pulled the original title. Now it will finally have its 'Day In the Sun'..."

The band's debut EP, Here In Hell, was released in September of 2005.

Obscura Announce New Drummer

German death metal band OBSCURA has issued the following update:

"OBSCURA is excited to announce our friend Hannes Grossmann as the new permanent drummer. Hannes will start playing drums for OBSCURA on the upcoming tour during February/March starting February 22, 2008.

"Hannes did some incredible jobs in bands like DEVILS CRY or at least NECROPHAGIST and will also play on the next full-length of OBSCURA.

"Jonas Baumgartl [drums] and Jonas Fischer [bass] had to leave OBSCURA after the last tour because of scheduling conflicts and other obligations with their studies and other bands. They decided to break with OBSCURA to focus on their studies and are not able to go on tour anymore. We wish both of them all the best for their upcoming works or projects.

"So OBSCURA is now searching for a talented and skilled musician for the bass guitar. Get in touch through: steffen@obscura-metal.com."

OBSCURA's upcoming CD will be recorded with V. Santura (DARK FORTRESS) at The Crypt Studios in Germany. The cover art and layout will be created by German artist Timo Wuerz.

Released last year, OBSCURA's debut album, "Retribution", was produced by Alex Krull (ATROCITY, LEAVES' EYES) and includes guest appearances by V. Santura (DARK FORTRESS), Matthias Röderer (ATROCITY), Thorsten Bauer (ATROCITY) and Martl (PROFANITY).

Candlemass To Re-Release Album

CANDLEMASS' "From the 13th Sun" album, which came out in 1999 and featured mainman/bassist Leif Edling alongside a collection of mostly unknown (outside Sweden) musicians, will be re-released on vinyl via Black Lodge Records. The new LP contains the entire original album plus three extra tracks: "The Odessa Chamber", "Sokrates" and "John the Leper". The bonus songs were culled from demos but due to poor tape quality, they have been re-recorded by Jejo Percovic (drums), Leif Edling, Mats Stahl (guitar) and Björn Flodquist (vocals).

CANDLEMASS filmed its 20th anniversary concert on March 31, 2007 at Stockholm's Kolingsborg for an upcoming DVD, tentatively due in October/November via Snapper/Peaceville. CANDLEMASS performed with no less than seven (!) different vocalists — including the band's former singers Johan Langquist and Tomas Vikström, plus the group's latest addition, Robert Lowe of SOLITUDE AETURNUS.

The complete list of vocalists that performed with the band is as follows:

Johan Langquist (ex-CANDLEMASS)
Tomas Vikström (ex-CANDLEMASS)
Mikael Åkerfeldt (OPETH)
Mats Levén (KRUX, THERION, ex-YNGWIE MALMSTEEN)
Robert Lowe (CANDLEMASS, SOLITUDE AETURNUS)
Tony Martin (ex-BLACK SABBATH)
Janne Christoffersson (GRAND MAGUS, SPIRITUAL BEGGARS)

In addition to the concert footage, the DVD will include interviews with all the vocalists from that evening as extra material.

Kataklysm Check In From Europe

Vocalist Maurizio Iacono of the Canadian death metallers KATAKLYSM has issued the following update:

"One week into this tour of European markets we havent hit for the last album and it seems like they've been waiting for us forever — phenomenal crowds, packed every night and having a packed house singing along… or screaming 'In Shadows and Dust' together sure makes it feel gigantic.

"We can't wait to hit Scandinavia soon and the UK as well as the other countries that are waiting for us.

"ABORTED are a powerhouse the band fucking rips live and BEHEMOTH are a fucking war machine. What a great package and great time. Everyone is having fun and getting along. Life is good — let's keep it up!"

KATAKLYSM will hit the road in North America in November/December as direct support to CHIMAIRA. Some headlining dates during the "off" days will also be announced.

Unfortunately, bassist Stephane Barbe will not be able to make the trek on the CHIMAIRA tour due to an important family obligation (Stephane and his girlfriend are expecting their first child). He will rejoin the band on the three last dates of the tour for the Montreal, Toronto and Millvale shows. KATAKLYSM will be utilizing the services of Francois Mongrain, bass player of tech death metallers MARTYR, for the tour until Stephane can rejoin the group.

KATAKLYSM has recruited producer Jason Suecof (CHIMAIRA, TRIVIUM, THE BLACK DAHLIA MURDER) to mix the album in early January. Entitled "Prevail", the CD will feature several guest appearances to be announced at a later date.

The album is scheduled for May 23, 2008 release via Nuclear Blast Records.

KATAKLYSM recently decided to "immortalize" the character that was featured on the cover of their most recent album, "In the Arms of Devastation", and have him re-appear as the main character — dubbed "The Heartbeast" — on their next offering, "Prevail".

Commented vocalist Maurizio Iacono: "We had so [much] killer feedback on the artwork but especially on the character that we decided to keep him as the band's fifth band member... kinda like IRON MAIDEN did with 'Eddie.' We have the perfect concept for the next album art... it will be bad-ass!"

To-Mera Part Ways With Keyboardist

British progressive dark metallers TO-MERA have issued the following update:

"It’s with a deep degree of sadness that we have to announce the departure of Hugo Sheppard from To-Mera.

Hugo felt that he had been neglecting his own personal musical projects since his time in the band. With a fairly heavy upcoming schedule of touring and promotional work for the upcoming To-Mera album, he was unfortunately unable to commit his time and energy to both projects.

He’ll still be involved in the ongoing mixing process for the new record, and his last show with us will be when we support Fates Warning in London on November 21st.

As a band we wish to thank Hugo for sharing his talent with us for the past two years and we wish him the very best of luck with his future endeavors. It’s been a genuine pleasure to work with him.

We’ll now be looking for a replacement keyboard player, and are actively seeking applications from those who can meet at least most of the following requirements:

- A High level of technique and musicianship, incorporating a thorough understanding of harmony, rhythm, sight-reading etc.
- Ability/ desire to play in pretty much ANY style.
- Good improvisational ability.
- A good ear and ability to learn new material quickly
- A strong interest in composition.
- Must have own professional-standard equipment.
- Ability to commit to live shows/ touring as well as regular rehearsals in London.
- Please direct all applications to tomeraband@gmail.com"

Phil Anselmo Slams VH1's "Behind The Music"

Former PANTERA/current DOWN frontman Philip Anselmo has slammed VH1's "Behind the Music" special on PANTERA as "awful," claiming that "they glossed over everything that PANTERA did to and for metal."

The "Behind the Music" PANTERA episode, which had its premiere in May 2006, included interviews with the surviving members of PANTERA — Vinnie Paul Abbott (drums), Philip Anselmo and Rex Brown (bass) — along with appearances by Guy Sykes (tour manager), Walter O'Brien (manager), Terry Date (producer), about five members of PANTERA's/DAMAGEPLAN's crew, and Rita Haney ("Dimebag" Darrell Abbott's girlfriend).

In the November 2007 issue of Revolver magazine, Anselmo is asked about the song "Mourn" on the new DOWN album, which was reportedly written about late PANTERA/DAMAGEPLAN guitarist "Dimebag" Darrell Abbott (who was killed by a deranged fan in December 2004). "That's a very hard, hard song for me to really… honestly, the song speaks for itself," Anselmo replied. "It's about feeling isolated from my family in Texas, feelings about the obvious… deep, deep, deep feelings every day. You know, I've been very quiet ever since the incident, but it's all good. Everyone else has aired their laundry, like on VH1. I'm sorry, I thought what VH1 did was awful. They glossed over everything PANTERA did to and for metal, and not once… I'm not realy sure how it was put, but there was a segue or something that described [Darrell's] killer [Nathan Gale] as 'what many feel was a disgruntled fan angry that PANTERA had broken up.' But not once did they go into the psychology of the killing, and how he was dishonorably discharged [from the Marines], that his mother bought him the gun for Christmas because he was depressed, how he had been kicked out of the same club a weekend before for acting strange. He was going to shoot whoever, and it happened to be one of my best friends, one of my brothers, and one of the most beautiful people…

"I decided a while ago that, yes, absolutely there is a proper time to mourn, and that he deserves a celebration of his life, and that's the path that I've chosen. Every action I do, I think of him. Every pushup I do, I think of him. Every time I hit a line, or I'm working in the studio, I can hear him saying, 'You can do better.' So that's what gets me through the hard times, the trying times, is his positivity. And that's what I wanted to do with ['Down III']: to celebrate life."
