Cannibal Corpse Bassist Talks Metalcore

www.waytooloud.com recently conducted and interview with CANNIBAL CORPSE members Alex Webster and George "Corpsegrinder" Fisher during the Metal Blade 25th Anniversary Tour. A couple of excerpts follow:

Way Too Loud!: After Sounds Of The Underground, has anyone talked to you about doing any more support tours? I'd love to see that, where you scare the headliners!

Alex Webster: We've had a little bit of interest from some people, but nothing has panned out yet to anything that we've been supporting since then. We've done a few festivals in Europe, but other than that, we've been headlining since that tour. It does seem to open up some doors though, because some people have been talking to us about doing some things, where before, it was hard to get anybody even to think about having us open for them. It's been tough. If you look at our tour history, very rarely have we done supporting tours. There's probably been less than five tours where we were the support band, as opposed to being the headliner. Our first two tours that we did were headliners, so right off the bat we were headlining.

Way Too Loud!: Is there any chance with LAMB OF GOD? The reason why I'm asking is because they opened up for you in? Was it 2000?

Alex: 2001. LAMB OF GOD, DIMMU BORGIR and THE HAUNTED opened for us on a North American tour. I think except for THE HAUNTED, all those bands are bigger than us now, which is cool by us, and we would be happy to open for any band that's bigger than us, even if they haven't been around for long, just because you want to introduce your music to new fans and all that. LAMB OF GOD have asked about having us open for them, but the timing didn't work out. They were a band that did ask about it. I think it would be great! I would love to open for those guys. We really appreciate that they've had us in mind, even though the scheduling didn't work out in the past.

Way Too Loud!: From the appearance of things, metalcore seems to have helped out every kind of real metal there is. Do you guys think that you've benefitted from this?

Alex: Any kind of metal we support, even if we don't necessarily listen to it a whole lot. A lot of the metalcore bands are pretty good. I think they have enough of an element of death metal to them that they've helped attract fans to the death metal scene. Like if you have metalcore bands occasionally doing a tour with a death metal band, it's kind of a fan exchange, where the fans of one scene can learn about the music of another, and I think it's positive because those fans wouldn't have made death metal a first stop. It wouldn't have been their first choice to check out death metal, but once they've had a chance to see a band like us like at Sound Of The Underground or whatever, it got them more interested in death metal. If those bands didn't exist, then Sounds Of The Underground probably wouldn't exist, and we wouldn't have done that tour, so we wouldn't have had that chance. I definitely think that metalcore bands have probably opened some doors for the death metal scene, and maybe the black metal scene as well.

Way Too Loud!: That makes me wonder about something. Do you think now, even death metal bands themselves are changing. I think it was a guy from Vile who said he liked the music, but even though he was playing it, he never liked the lyrics, and he really wanted to go in a more positive direction. It almost seems like there's a couple, I guess it already has been done actually, death metal bands doing stuff that's positive, and in a different direction.

Alex: I guess if you look at bands like NAPALM DEATH, at one point those guys those guys sounded very much like a death metal band, and they still do have a lot of elements of death metal to their sound, even though most people would call them a grindcore band. Especially around "Harmony Corruption", they sounded very similar to death metal on some of their riffs, but they always had lyrics that were political, and some of them were proudly positive lyrics. I'm not that familiar with their stuff, but I know none of it was gore. I think the music and the lyrics can be separate, but in our opinion, if you ask any of the members in the band, we've always felt that really dark and negative lyrics were the way to go for the kind of music we're doing. It just seemed appropriate for the riffing style we have. The style of riffing is dark, aggressive and violent, and there's nothing else that we felt would fit well. The music and the lyrics had to be match, and to us, the music was violent, so the lyrics had to be violent. But if someone else wants to do it in a different way, that's fine. There's no rules in music. There might be some rules in death metal, on how you define it, and that's OK, but in general, if someone wants to take some sounds from death metal and us it for something, and try and make positive lyrics on top of it, we're not going to complain about that.

George: Some people feel, that somebody who is not a part of the scene, or who looks different that comes to shows, they feel that their… you know… Like most people would say "mall" kids or "mallcore" kids, or whatever you want to call them, they see those kids wearing their shirts, and they feel like the one band that hasn't sold out, that hasn't turned their back on their music is more popular, unfortunately they see that band as selling out. That's not our fault at all. We don't control who comes to our shows. We want everybody to come to our shows, we don't care if it's Joe Schmoe or some kid in a hospital. We have a very diverse audiences. I know that tonight we'll have a diverse audience, and of course part of that is because we have a diverse bill, there's bands that aren't pure death metal on this bill, but some people feel like their little thing has been taken away. It used to be SLAYER — nobody knew who they were, now SLAYER's huge! People feel betrayed by that. To me, I've always thought that if you're going to feel that way, then you should just listen to the band. If the band sounds like they've turned their back on you and you don't like them anymore, that's fine because everyone else likes them now. What I would always say about bands that I liked that were getting bigger, I started seeing more kids wearing their shirts, and I'd think "They stink now!" But people feel like their little things been taken away. I used to try and get all my friends to listen to KREATOR, because all my friends used to listen to BON JOVI and all this crap, and I was like "Listen to this! KREATOR!" Then a few of my friends would listen to it with me, and then more and more people started listening to it, and you want them to listen to it. Not me, but some people feel like their little things been taken away. You wanted everybody to love them — why don't you like this, it's the best thing ever? But when everybody else likes it, then it's not the best thing ever. We know a guy who likes only the band's first demo ever. "Only their first demo, the rest is shit!" (Laughs) C'mon, it's like dude, what are you talking about? It's ridiculous.

Video Of Glenn Danzig Falling Offstage Posted

A short fan-filmed video clip of Glenn Danzig making his way back onto the stage after reportedly falling off while singing the song "How the Gods Kill" at the opening concert of the current DANZIG tour, on Tuesday (October 23) in Baltimore, Maryland, can be viewed below.

According to Rock N Roll Experience's Bob Suehs, who attended the concert, Glenn "was in a bad mood after the fall — he cut the show short and he nixed the MISFITS set with Doyle and was yelling at Todd Youth [guitar] the rest of the night telling him to slow down his playing. The story I was told from a security guard was that Glenn dislocated his shoulder, but I can't confirm that. However, he was hurt badly because he did not meet fans after the show... he ran directly to the bus and didn't come out."

As previously reported, tonight's (October 25) DANZIG show at The Worcester Palladium in Worcester, Massachusetts has been cancelled due to Glenn Danzig's shoulder injury. There is no word yet on a possible makeup date.

DANZIG's current tour is in support of "The Lost Tracks of Danzig", the two-CD set that was released May 29, as well as Glenn's limited-edition book "Drukija, Contessa of Blood", loosely based on the legend of 17th century vampire Countess Elizabeth Bathory, and illustrated by long time collaborator Simon Bisley.

"The Lost Tracks" is comprised of 26 previously unreleased tracks that span Danzig's entire career and were originally recorded during the band's seven-album "arc" that began with 1988's "Danzig". More...

Gorefest Check In From Europe

Dutch metallers GOREFEST have issued the following update from the road in Europe:

"So, we’re now 8 days into our first tour since we got back together as a band, and already we’ve faced that scourge of any decent Metal-tour, the old Trouble With The Trailer chestnut.

This usually takes about a day, or sometimes 36 hours, to fix. Typically, it took us, or rather our bus-company, 4 days. It doesn’t seem to have much effect on the Brewing of Metal we’re practicing every night.

So far, Spain and Italy have been witness to this unseemly act, and they’ve been lapping it up with every pounding stroke and quivering chord we dislodge. It’s almost obscenely heavy, and highly stimulating!

Maribor, Slovenia is next in our little black book, and judging by the disgusted looks of hapless bystanders during soundcheck, there will be plenty of fist-pumping and two-fingered tangoing going on tonight!"

Serj Tankian's Home Has Close Brush With Fires

The Pulse of Radio reports: Serj Tankian is one of many artists and celebrities who has a home in the Southern California area that is currently endangered by massive fires, and told a Seattle radio station on Tuesday (October 23) that his area was under orders to evacuate. But Tankian arrived in California on Wednesday (October 2h) and told The Pulse of Radio that his house was now out of danger. "Thankfully, we got news that they lifted the evacuation and they were able to control the fire," he said. "But that was really, really scary, and I'm praying that it all dissipates and gets done pretty fast. There's people that are losing their homes. I can't imagine, you know, I've been thinking about that for the last 48 hours of, you know, what it would be to lose my home and it's a tough thing. It makes you realize how many little things are irreplaceable in your life."

Tankian has been on the road for the last two weeks on his first-ever solo tour, in support of his just released solo debut, "Elect the Dead".

"Elect the Dead" is the first new release from a member of SYSTEM OF A DOWN since the band went on hiatus in the fall of 2006.

Tankian plays on Thursday night (October 25) in Las Vegas. He and his backing band, the FCC, will head to the U.K. early next month to open for FOO FIGHTERS.

Megadeth Bassist Checks In From Indonesia

MEGADETH bassist James Lomenzo has posted the following message in the "Forums" section of the band's official web site:

"James here typing away feverishly in Indonesia. I've been having a bit of trouble with my cell phone on this trip so my SayNow activity [a service that enables celebrities to connect to their audience over the phone] is being pretty much compromised. However, I just had a chance to check in on the SayNow site and was really blown away by the selfless messages of support and good wishes from the great folks that called in.

"Many of you I've spoken to a few times and know who you are, to those folks and some of the newer call-ins I want to sincerely thank you for your good wishes regarding my family and friends in Southern California. Let me tell you that my family is safe and as far as I know my home is OK. We're still waiting for word on my father-in-law's house in Rancho Bernardo and my thoughts and prayers are with him and the rest of my family as well as the hundreds of thousands of people who are currently displaced and suffering by the fate of this tragic situation. It's difficult to not be distracted when you can't be with your family and friends to help out when there's so much chaos at home but, your good wishes and prayers do have the power to help ...and they do. This is a unique situation, to have such caring, empathetic fan support. Me and the fellows are so inspired, 'makes us dig in a little harder for you all if you know what I mean. More...

Glenn Danzig Comments On Misfits

Michael Christopher of DelcoTimes.com recently conducted an interview with Glenn Danzig. A few excerpts from the chat follow:

On "The Lost Tracks":

"It'’s all unreleased stuff from the third DANZIG record up until now. There's also a SAMHAIN song that we did with (producer) Rick Rubin when DANZIG first got together that never was released."

"'When Death Had No Name' is a track that has long been kicking around the band’s earliest sessions. Two versions show up on the set, a late '80s and early '90s version both stark in contrast but representative of the singer’s sonic evolution, something that was difficult to capture with the condition of the masters.

"We had to bake them, because they spin on the reel and start flaking off and it won't play. There are people out there that actually bake old tapes so you can transfer them to a hard drive or whatever you want to do."

On his rumored collaboration with ALICE IN CHAINS' Jerry Cantrell:

"I don't know if that’s going to actually happen or not, because right now he's busy with this ALICE IN CHAINS thing. It's going to be a blues record, but it's not going to be new blues, it's going to be old, dark, creepy acoustic blues; guitars and vocals."

On teaming up with MISFITS' guitarist Doyle Wolfgang von Frankenstein for a quick set of classic tracks on DANZIG's most recent tour:

"People wanted to see it — I'm not stupid. And obviously it's never going to happen otherwise. People dug it; I never thought I needed to validate it. We always had a pact that we were never going to do it unless we were all going to do it; and someone broke that pact [referring to Jerry Only — Ed.]."

On bass player Jerry Only, who still tours under the MISFITS banner with a group of old-school punkers questionably trying to fill out the ranks:

"I just think it’s sad that Jerry doesn't have the confidence to call it 'THE JERRY ONLY BAND.' I did SAMHAIN, I did DANZIG, I never had to do that and I never would — it was something special."

On being a horror film buff:

"I'm happy that people are discovering Japanese horror; I've loved it for decades. It's really funny when people are like, 'Hey, have you seen 'The Ring'?' and I'm like, 'Yeah — 10 years ago!'"

"There are so many good horror movies, and I tell people a lot of it is based on real [life] and they're like, 'Oh — OK.' A lot of people don’t know 'The Hills Have Eyes' is based on a real story or that 'Psycho' was based on a real story. Some people don't even realize that there are actually crazy people out there waiting to kill you, they're so insulated."

Cannibal Corpse Post Tour Update

Legendary death metallers CANNIBAL CORPSE have issued the following update:

"We have just returned from Brazil, where we finished off the 'Kill' tour with a very successful four-show mini-tour. This was our third trip to Brazil, and we were happy to see lots of old friends as well as many new ones. We really had an excellent time there, and we want to thank the fans in Brazil for giving us such a great response. These will likely be the last shows we do until 2009, so we are really happy to finish the tour on such a high note. We also would like to thank Eduardo and Victor for doing a great job with the organization of the tour, all of the local crews/promoters, and all of the excellent bands we shared the stage with during the tour.

"The touring we did for 'Kill' turned out to be some of the most extensive we've done in our career. During the tour we played festival tours such as No Mercy and Sounds Of The Underground, as well as excellent one-off festivals like Wacken, With Full Force, Hellfest, New England Metal and Hardcore Festival, and Graspop Metal Meeting. We also did two headlining tours of Europe and two headlining tours of the USA and Canada, one of which was the Metal Blade 25th Anniversary Tour, and also several smaller tours throughout the world. We played with dozens of killer heavy bands along the way, and we'd like to say hello and thanks to all of them.

"The tour covered many countries we've been to before: The United Kingdom, Ireland, Belgium, The Netherlands, Germany, France, Spain, Portugal, Italy, Greece, Slovenia, The Czech Republic, Serbia, Hungary, Poland, Latvia, Estonia, Finland, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Switzerland, Austria, Mexico, Chile, Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, The United States, Canada, Russia, and Australia. We also went to a few countries for the first time on this tour: Bulgaria, Romania, Guatemala, Iceland, El Salvador, Ecuador, Peru, and New Zealand. We were only forced to miss one gig on the whole tour and that was the Venezuela show which was cancelled by the local government. Hopefully we'll be able to get down there in the future as we really want to play for all of the great fans there.

"So, unless we've forgotten a country on this list (our apologies if we did), that's 41 countries that we performed in for the 'Kill' tour. We'd like to give massive thanks to all of the fans in that came to these shows, you all helped make the 'Kill' tour our best tour ever. THANK YOU!!!!"

Behemoth Post 'Prometherion' Video Online

Polish extreme metallers BEHEMOTH filmed video for the track "Prometherion" this past summer. Shot by acclaimed director Soren (ALL THAT REMAINS, UNEARTH), the clip is a frenetic, savage performance based video that perfectly showcases the band's unrelenting energy and uncompromising vision. Disturbed Begin Recording New Album

DISTURBED has entered a Chicago studio to begin recording its fourth album, the follow-up to 2005's platinum-certified "Ten Thousand Fists". The band, which features vocalist David Draiman, guitarist Dan Donegan, drummer Mike Wengren, and bassist John Moyer, has chosen to produce the album itself. The as-yet-untitled CD will be released by Reprise Records in the spring of 2008.

According to Draiman, the forthcoming album "seems to have taken on a darker character than the previous albums. It's more furiously paced and complex." He continues, "producing the record ourselves has been a learning experience that will serve the record well." More...

Turbonegro Part Ways With Rhythm Guitarist

Rhythm guitarist Rune Rebellion has left Norway's TURBONEGRO. According to MIC Norway, he will not leave the organization however, and will continue in his instrumental role in running the band's label, Scandinavian Leather Recordings, as well as managing a lot of the touring business. These tasks have been largely his responsibility also thus far, and the workload of the combined roles as on-stage rebel and behind-the-scenes organizer was what made it necessary to leave the band.

Norwegian music journalists agree that Rebellion's departure will not change TURBONEGRO's sound — that two guitars suffices, especially when led by wizard Euroboy — and that he probably will not be replaced. Rebellion's last show will be this Saturday's gig in Stavanger, Norway.

Notwithstanding the gravity of losing a band member, most of the buzz around the band these days is about the recently released band biography, which has all the ingredients of a classic on par with MÖTLEY CRUE's story "The Dirt". More...

Obituary Announce Tour Dates With Merauder

OBITUARY will team up with MERAUDER for a few shows in December 2007.
Confirmed dates so far are as follows:

Dec. 07 - Clifton Park, NY @ Northern Lights
Dec. 08 - Brooklyn, NY @ Club Europa
Dec. 09 - Sayreville, NJ @ Starland Ballroom

OBITUARY have tapped comic book stalwart and director Hart D. Fisher to helm the group's new video for the song "Evil Ways". "We're shooting in Florida, and I'm going to take this far further than just a bunch of assholes on stage playing their guitars," says Fisher. "They want to go dark, go mean, and take this all to the horror movie level. There's going to be cameos from a ton of death metal guys also."

"Evil Ways" is the lead single from OBITUARY's new album, "Xecutioner's Return", which was released in North America on August 28 via Candlelight Records. The CD was mixed at Redroom Recorders and was mastered in June at Morrisound Studios in Tampa. The band once again worked with artist Andreas Marschall, who has previously created the art for "The End Complete" and the group's last record, "Frozen in Time".

OBITUARY will team up with long-running German thrashers HOLY MOSES for a European tour in January 2008. Also appearing on the bill are Swedish metallers AVATAR.
