Pit Stories: Shoelace Windshield Wipers

Sometimes just getting to the show can be a battle all it's own, especially with metal bands covering long distances by van and bus with few funds (or mechanical know-how) available. For this week's Pit Story, Canadian group Silent Line shares a tale of having to rig up some very ghetto windshield wipers just to reach the venue:

A while back the majority of us lived in Bonnyville and we used to travel to and from Edmonton for the majority of our gigs. Not too long before this specific gig we bought a beautiful yellow 16 passenger van for the band. Bonnyville to Edmonton is roughly a 2-and-a-half-hour drive and about half way through the trip we came up to a pretty nasty storm. Unfortunately, earlier on in the trip we noticed the windshield wipers weren’t working and we needed to pull over and take a look at them.

We pulled over into a nearby gas station ahead of the storm, opened up the hood, and could not for the life of us get the wipers working. After pondering a few moments Mike came up with the suggestion to tie shoe laces to the windshield wipers and manually pull them from the inside of the vehicle.

The shoelace for the left wiper was attached and ran underneath the left side mirror on the van, so when we pulled on that one the wipers would come down. For the right wiper we left a small gap in the top of the window so when we pulled that shoelace the wipers would go up. Dave was in the band at the time and he kindly volunteered to do the first shift on working the wipers. Luckily as kneeled in between the seats and alternately pulled the laces we fed him ice cold beer until his arms gave out. Roughly an hour later we made it somewhat-safely to our show and with a hilarious memory that we would not forget.

That's some dedication to bring an awesome metal show to the fans! Silent Line's new album "Shattered Shores" will drop this Friday - October 30 - and you can also stream the entire release ahead of time through the player below. For more info on Silent Line, head over to the band's Facebook profile here. More...

Rivers Of Nihil Kicking Off North American Tour

Pennsylvania death metal assassins Rivers Of Nihil will kick off a near month long North American tour this evening supporting Hate Eternal. The band's latest stretch of onstage debauchery will level twenty-four venues from October 27 through November 22. Additional support will be provided by Misery Index and Beyond Creation.

Rivers Of Nihil will be touring in support of the "Monarchy" full-length released this past Summer via Metal Blade Records. "This album was a big step for us as a band, but also for me personally," said guitarist Brody Uttley upon the record's release. "I have always been a big fan of post rock music and I wanted to write a death metal record that combined the atmospheric elements of bands like Explosions In The Sky, This Will Destroy You, If These Trees Could Talk, and Sigur Ros (to name a few) with the heaviness of death metal."

The seasonal concept that began with Spring on the band's crushing "The Conscious Seed Of Light" debut continues with "Monarchy," as it welcomes the oppressive heat of Summer. The story takes place millions of years after the events in "The Conscious Seed Of Light."

Bassist Adam Biggs, who also serves as the band's primary lyricist, explains: "The Earth has been transformed into a vast desert wasteland, where after aeons of lifelessness, new beings begin to take shape and begin their journey as shepherds of the planet. But after a while, a class system forms from a sun-worshiping religious dictatorship, and these beings start to lose their way. Only the guidance of an ancient earthly force can help them save themselves as well the planet." More...

Kult Mogil Reveals New Album Details

The debut album from Polish up-and-coming death metal act Kult Mogil is now complete and will be released at the end of this year through Pagan Records. The band has unveiled the artwork and track list of the full-length, entitled "Anxiety Never Descending."

Made up of six new tracks, the music found on this album creates an atmosphere of a reeking graveyard; a soundtrack to your damnation and slow death. The band commented: “We hope that - if we can put it this way – this record will not make dying any easier for you.”

Regarding the band’s name, the members explain that Kult Mogil does not translate to “sepulchral cult.” Instead, “cult of graves” is more fitting and understood as a “burial place with or without tombstones” as opposed to “the cult of dead ancestors.”

More details including the release date, pre-orders and the first sounds from the grave shall be announced soon. Watch out!

1. Anxiety Never Descending
2. Threnody
3. Serene Ponds
4. Poczatek Wrazen

Bloodstock Confirms Dragonforce, Paradise Lost

After recently revealing Twisted Sister'sfinal U.K. show and the mighty Mastodon as two of the three main stage headliners for 2016, Bloodstock is excited to announce three more main stage bands for next year’s event.

Power metal fans rejoice! Be sure to practice your air guitar skills in advance, because the shredtastic Dragonforce has confirmed that Bloodstock will be the band's only U.K. show in 2016!. Guitarist Herman Li informs us:

"It’s been over 10 years since DragonForce played Bloodstock, and both of us have come a long way in that time. Back then, we were a new band with only our debut album out, and Bloodstock was a smaller indoor festival, but still a magnet for true, die-hard rock & metal fans, just as it is today. We had some of our best times that year at Bloodstock and felt great excitement at being invited to play. That excitement is just as real today having been invited back again, only this time it's even better because I won't need to pack the gear and drive up there in my car with Sam Totman as my map reader!!"

British doom pioneers Paradise Lost also join the bill, with guitarist Greg Mackintosh commenting: “It is great to be confirmed to play Bloodstock 2016! We haven't played there since 2012 and we had a blast. It will also be our first UK festival appearance since the release of our new album, ‘The Plague Within’. We look forward to seeing you all there and adding the doom and gloom to Bloodstock 2016.”

Greek extreme metallers Rotting Christ will blaze into Catton Park, with front man Sakis having this to say: “We’re very proud to be coming back to the biggest metal festival in the United Kingdom! Bloodstock, let's create hell on earth next year! Until then...keep the spirit alive!”

GWAR Takes Part In A.V. Undercover Series

For the fourth year in a row (the most by any artist human, Scumdog or otherwise), your masters from GWAR returned to The A.V. Club to take part in the A.V. Undercover Series, featuring artists covering other artists' music.

GWAR's first offering tackled the Kansas classic, "Carry On Wayward Son" - which was voted favorite performance of the year, This, of course, came as no surprise to the scumdogs from GWAR who consider themselves the greatest rock performers on this or any other planet in history.

After a year of celebrating the victory, the group returned to defend the crown with its unique spin on Billy Ocean's "Get Out of My Dreams, Get Into My Car." What happened for the third appearance? The band returned and went New Wave with a version of Pet Shop Boy's "West End Girls," which segued into a re-worked version of Jim Carol's "People Who Died," paying tribute to fallen GWAR members and friends of the band. And of course, GWAR won performance of the year again. (Did you think they wouldn't?)

This time, the band also dug deep into its cassette collection and pulled out Cyndi Lauper's Greatest Hits. Once they came across "She-Bop" and learned that it was a song about masturbation, which is a habit near and dear to the GWAR heart, the alien overlords decided this is the song they must play to defend their "Undercover" title for an unprecedented fourth time! So without any more fanfare here it is, the orgasm-inducing GWAR rendition of "She-Bop" with a little surprise at the end right here.

After hearing that the A.V. Club was inviting GWAR back for a fourth time, Pustulus admits, "I think I threw up in my mouth a little bit."

A.V. Club VP/Editor in Chief Josh Modell had the following to say about GWAR's fourth visit: "Every year we hope GWAR will forget where our studio is so that they won't crush us and the competition. But every year they manage to find us and breathe horrible new life into an old classic. We submit, we submit." More...
