Trivium Frontman Rejects 'Metalcore' Tag
Lucas Aykroyd of Straight.com reports:
According to naysayers, TRIVIUM is to METALLICA what GOOD CHARLOTTE is to the SEX PISTOLS. The Orlando-based thrash-metal quartet has faced its share of criticism since forming in 2000, despite high-profile gigs at Ozzfest, Sounds of the Underground, and Britain's Download Festival. Perhaps there's some envy due to its youth: the senior member, at age 24, is drummer Travis Smith.
"If we were acting like a bunch of 16-year-olds, I could understand it," says vocalist-guitarist Matt Heafy, reached aboard his tour bus in snowy Buffalo. "But we've got our shit together live and as people. Age is such a trivial thing."
The outspoken 20-year-old frontman also claims TRIVIUM should never have been accused of pandering to metalcore teenyboppers: "Metalcore is a combination of metal and hardcore, and we've never been into hardcore. We don't draw any influence from that scene. Even our second record, 'Ascendancy', was a metal record. Sure, it had screaming and heavy/soft parts. But only a small number of people would consider it metalcore."

Interview
Interview With Level-Zero's Jesse Bilson
Los Angeles, California's LEVEL-ZERO is one of those unique metal bands in the underground that truly thrives off being in the underground, where political moves at big corporate labels can't mess with them. From my vantage point, they are clearly one of the most respected and talked about acts in the country, even up against bands that have record deals and big money to back them. That is a true testimony to the hard work that the band and its loyal fans put in on a continual basis to keep these guys rocking hard.
I got some Q&A in with their drummer, Jesse Bilson. And it's one that I'm sure you'll enjoy. More...
Dark Funeral Postpone Latvia And Lithuania Shows
Swedish black metallers DARK FUNERAL have issued the following update:
"[It's] now [been] over a week since all of our gear (guitars, bass, wireless systems, cymbals etc) was confiscated by the police in Peru. And we still have not received any news if or when it will be returned to us. At this point of time one can only speculate, but things doesn't look good though.
"[It's] not easy for us to say this, believe me, but due to the current situation we are unfortunately forced to 'postpone' our upcoming shows in Latvia and Lithuania. We can, as anyone might understand, not afford to buy a whole new backline just like that, and/or in time for these two shows, which are scheduled this coming weekend already.
"We understand this will leave a lot of you people disappointed, including the local promoters, but we sure hope to have this literally fucked up situation sorted out real soon, and new dates scheduled and announced to you shortly."
DARK FUNERAL performed an all-instrumental set in Lima, Peru on October 8 after the group's vocalist/bassist Emperor Magus Caligula was taken ill. A near-riot followed the concert, with several irate fans destroying property around the concert venue as a way of registering their dissatisfaction over what they felt was a less than adequate performance.

The CD also marked the first full-length release by FEAR OF GOD's Dawn Crosby, who sadly passed away on December 15, 1996.

Blessed Death Post Previously Unreleased Songs
Two previously unreleased songs from long-defunct New Jersey thrashers BLESSED DEATH have been posted online at blesseddeath.com. According to guitarist Nick Fiorentino, "these songs are from a studio recording that was originally supposed to be released as BLESSED DEATH's third album back in 1991. I believe there may also be demo versions of these songs out there from a demo that was released prior to the doing the actual studio recording."
BLESSED DEATH released two albums in the mid-'80s — 1986's "Kill or Be Killed" (Megaforce) and 1988's "Destined for Extinction" (Roadrunner) — featuring a complex speed/thrash style that received some critical acclaim but ultimately failed to make a commercial dent. They were also cited by the BNR Metal Pages as the only band, metal or otherwise, that featured identical twins as a rhythm section.
Turmoil Comments On Label Departure
As previously reported, Turmoil has left Abacus Recordings. The group has now released the following statement regarding the matter:
"After 11 long years with Century Media Records and Abacus Recordings, we are free. And here, all we had to do was ask....weird. So after 2 LP's, 2 EP's, a couple of cover songs, and a 2-CD discography, we can finally throw what was probably one of the worst recording contracts ever to be signed by humans into the garbage. But hey, when you're 22 years old and a couple of dudes fly from Essen, Germany to Colebrook,Pa. (??????) to sign you, give you money, and send you to Europe, who has time for reading contracts, right? Right.
So, we've been working on new material most of the summer and were starting to question whether we wanted to put our time, effort, money, lives, sanity, etc., into writing a new full-length for a label that we weren't 100% comfortable with. The answer to that question being: NO. After consulting with our lawyers (where were they in 1995? maybe high school...), we found out that the only option we really had was to ask to be released. So we draw straws, Pushnik loses, and he makes the call to Ray Harkins at Abacus. Apparently, Ray has been expecting said phone call, he talks to the owner, and within a week, we are free to explore our options. Un-fucking- believable. If you've never seen a bunch of 30-year-old men jump around like some schoolyard broads, well, you missed your chance. This was nothing personal; we've had a chance to work with a lot of great people over the last decade and we'd like to say thank you to Robert, Bori, Ula, Tom B., and Ray Harkins, just to name a few, but after 11 years, it's time for a change.
We've had a couple offers come in already, but our ears are open. So whoever is interested in working with us, you can contact us through our website, our Myspace page, or through our manager, Keith Isola [at kisola918@aol.com]."
