Damageplan Issues Statements
As has been widely reported in the media, Elektra/Atlantic recording group Damageplan suffered a horrible tragedy at their show in Columbus, Ohio on Wednesday night (December 8).
Guitarist Dimebag Darrell was shot and killed, as was the band's head of security, Jeffrey "Mayhem" Thompson, an employee of the club, Erin Halk, and a member of the audience, Nathan Bray. Chris Paluska, a member of the band's management team who was serving as tour manager, was shot and is in critical but stable condition. John "Kat" Brooks, the band's drum tech, was also shot and is being released from the hospital today.
The surviving members of Damageplan have issued these statements:
With all his greatness and accomplishments on the guitar, Dime will be missed more for his giving personality, charisma, caring for others, love and most of all his HEART!! Twice as big as the state of TEXAS!!!!!!!!!!!! Dime gave it all every day to each and every one of us and our lives have forever been hollowed without him...Thanks to all of you for reaching out to us in this time of our immeasurable loss. REST IN PEACE BROTHER DIME!!!!!!
Jeffrey 'Mayhem' Thompson was not just a true part of the Damageplan family, but part of the whole Dallas music scene. He was friend to all, with a great personality. He bent over backward to help us all with his trademark phrases like 'What can I do for you sir?' and 'Coming up!' He also stated his willingness to protect us, saying 'I'd take a bullet for ya,' and unfortunately did in defense of our lives. He truly lived and died for his friends and made the ultimate sacrifice, giving his life to save ours. For this we will never forget. You will be missed big man.
Lasting Effect On Heavy Metal Scene Expected
For David Draiman, his safe place has now become a hazardous zone.
Draiman is one of several heavy metal artists who say their lives and careers will be dramatically altered by the death of Arlington-raised guitarist "Dimebag" Darrell Abbott, who was fatally shot onstage at a Columbus, Ohio, nightclub Wednesday night.
"The stage is an environment where you tend to feel safe," said Draiman, lead singer for Chicago-based metal band Disturbed, whose last album, "Believe," sold 1.5 million copies.
"There are always guys jumping on and off of it, stage-diving, and prior to this incident, I welcomed it," he said. "But I don't know who might be running up there with a gun now. I'm sure there are people who hate me, too. Everyone's at risk now."
Until Wednesday, rock bands had not been affected by this type of violence. Even fans of Pantera, Abbott's former group, rioted at a 1995 show at Dallas' Fair Park Coliseum, ripping up parts of the floor, setting the boards on fire and then tossing them at the stage.
But Abbott's death shows how vulnerable a band member can be.
"To be honest, we're completely scared to go on stage now," says Mercedes Lander, a member of Canadian metal band Kittie. "That's all that people we know have been talking about -- just how frightening it is that something like this can happen, especially in the metal community, which is so tight-knit.
"How do you get back onstage knowing in the back of your mind that something like this happened -- and can happen again?"
Mercedes' sister, Morgan, a guitarist in Kittie, said the band played about a month ago at Alrosa Villa, the Columbus club where Abbott's latest group, Damageplan, was on stage Wednesday night.
"We've been playing that place for years," she said. "And, even though it didn't cross our minds at the time, it's scary because a lot of places are like that, where people can just jump onstage. It's not that uncommon for someone to just jump up there -- but they've always jumped off."

Accept And Nuclear Blast Sign Cooperation Deal
No matter what styles of music have been trendy, Accept always remained on top, were regarded as most important German Metal export of all time besides the Scorpions and wrote music history like no other Metal act. Classics like "Balls To The Walls" or "Metal Heart" mustn't miss in any good collection.
The dream of many Metal fans comes true now as Accept have reunited for a few festivals shows in 2005 – the band announces a best of set par excellence: "With U.D.O., I always play different Accept songs and thus I know pretty exact what the fans want to hear. Wolf, whom I met for the first time since eight years now, has the same set list in mind. But we don't want to give away everything in advance", frontman Udo Dirkschneider explains. "We're really looking forward to playing these shows and we won't disappoint any Accept fan for sure!"
Accept will kick off at the Rock Hard Festival which takes places at the Amphitheatre Gelsenkirchen (Germany) on May 13th – 15th 2005. "Besides the Rock Hard Festival we will only play Wacken in Germany, a tour is definitely not planned", Udo states. "We will play at the Sweden Rock Festival as Scandinavia was one of the biggest markets for Accept ever, and perhaps at two or three more open airs in Europe. Afterwards I'll focus on U.D.O. again completely."
In cooperation with Accept manager Gaby Hoffmann, Nuclear Blast adopts the publicity for the forthcoming festival season. Another result out of the cooperation contact is an exclusive merchandise deal for the upcoming festivals which also includes classic Accept motives.

Nightclub Shooter Said Pantera Stole His Lyrics
The man who shot and killed metal guitarist "Dimebag" Darrell Abbott in an Ohio nightclub once told a friend that Abbott's former band, Pantera, stole his lyrics.
But police said they may never know why Nathan Gale , 25, shot Abbott, 38, and three other people Wednesday night during a concert. A Columbus police officer shot and killed Gale.
Abbott was a founding member of Pantera, one of the most influential metal bands of the 1990s. He was with the heavy metal band Damageplan at the time of his death.
Gale's friend, Jeramie Brey, said Gale once showed him pages of lyrics copied from Pantera. But Gale claimed he had written them. Brey said Gale was "off his rocker" and wanted to sue Pantera.
Police haven't verified reports that Gale began his rampage by yelling out accusations that Abbott broke up Pantera.
