Headline News
Candiria in Accident, Tour Cancelled
Members of Candiria were involved in a serious vehicle accident when their tour van was rear-ended in New York State near Buffalo. Consequently, their current tour with 40 Below Summer has been cancelled. Their van was reportedly hit by a truck, whose driver has admitted liability. John LaMacchia and Carley Coma were both reportedly flown by helicopter to a trauma center with injuries, now being described as "non-critical" (LaMacchia has a broken collarbone). The band was en route from a show in Albany to a show in Cleveland. We'll have more details as soon as we get them.
American Nightmare Update
The band formerly known as American Nightmare is still alive and well. As some of you have probably noticed though, their official website is no longer functional and they are no longer mentioned on the Equal Vision Records website. This temporary cyberspace absence is due to the ongoing legal offensive from Philadelphia's American Nightmare, who hold the legal trademark for the name. As soon as the suit is officially settled, and AN can get their new name legally trademarked, an official announcement will be made regarding the band's new moniker. There are currently rumors floating around (particularly on our message board) that the band has changed their name to American Frightmare. This is entirely untrue, and unless it comes from the band or their label, we suggest you don't believe anything relating to a new name.
Tribunal Signs The Underwater
Tribunal Records has signed York, Pennsylvania band The Underwater. The group is primarily comprised of ex-members of hardcore outfit, Boywunder. The band recently had an opening slot on the final ZAO tour, and not suprisingly, ZAO drummer Jesse Smith has reportedly now been added to the The Underwater's full-time lineup. In case you were wondering, the group does not play hardcore. Their material is actually rock oriented (listen to a track right here). Plans are currently underway for the band to record an EP for Tribunal in early-October.
Black Cloud Thrash Supergroup
Black Cloud, an all-star thrash cover band, has been formed by bassist Jean-Yves Thériault (Voivod) along with guitarist Pierre Rémillard (Obliveon), guitarist Daniel Mongrain (Martyr), drummer Flo Mounier (Cryptopsy) and vocalist Patrick Mireault (Ghoulunatics). The group will cover songs from such thrash legends as Slayer, Venom, Motorhead, Metallica, Celtic Frost and Voivod.
Masterplan Happy with Lande's Skills
Masterplan guitarist Roland Grapow told France’s RockHard Magazine that there will be a song on the Masterplan CD titled ‘Into The Light’ that's an actual left-over from Helloween's The Dark Ride sessions. Apparently Deris couldn't hit the high notes on this particularly crushing number. Grapow added that Jorn Lande is easily the best singer he had the pleasure to work with.
According to Grapow’s website, “the album artwork is already finished and, as previously announced, the logo might look slightly different from now. The band is going to do the first photo shoot next Thursday, September 12th, and record the first video, for the single edit version of ‘Enlighten Me’, on Friday, September 13th. The band is very excited and hope to have everything done until January, as planned.” The single will be released in November via AFM records, with the full CD to follow in January. Marquee Avalon will release the record in Southeast Asia and Japan.
Interview with Carcass' Ken Owen

VH1 Uses Morbid Angel Song
A clip of the Morbid Angel track "Rapture" (from 1994's Covenant) has been incorporated into a VH1 Vogue Fashion Awards 2002 commercial, which will be broadcast internationally from now until October 15th. The clip is "eerily similar to the original 'Rapture' video directed by Tony Kunenwalder," according to the group's official web site.
Cazares: Marquez not in Brujeria
Despite rumors to the contrary from Blabbermouth.net, Brujeria have NOT recruited Sadistic Intent/Asesino drummer Emilio Marquez as the replacement for former Fear Factory skinsman Raymond Herrera, Brujeria/ex-Fear Factory guitarist Dino Cazares has informed Blabbermouth.net.
Although Herrera was previously quoted as saying that he had no interest in ever performing or recording with Dino again, Cazares is hopeful that Raymond will eventually change his mind and return to his role as Brujeria's drummer prior to the recording of the band's next album, due in late 2003.
Satyricon Set European Release Date
Norway's Satyricon have set October 21st as the European release date of their brand new CD, Volcano. The album, which was issued in Scandinavia on September 2nd through Capitol Records, has no American or Asian release date scheduled at this time.
Darkthrone Prepare New CD
Norwegian black metallers Darkthrone are scheduled to hold another rehearsal session in Oslo at the end of the month to complete the songwriting process for their forthcoming CD, which they hope to record at the end of the year for a February 2003 release through Moonfog Records.
The album, which apparently no longer carries the working title of Leper Unction, will contain such cuts as "Rust" and "Fucked Up And Ready To Die". According to a statement posted on the band's recently-launched official web, "the new album seems to develop into another state of soul-binding art (at least for us it is), black & white album design, dark-edge primitive metal. This time around we'll make sure that we show everybody where we will stand in the future…As already everybody knows, Darkthrone stands for nothing 'new and fresh', prog-metal is a totally different musical world for us, we live and breathe for the real thing."
In other news, Darkthrone's Goatlord album will be released on limited edition vinyl later this year. The album will include a gatefold sleeve and will contain liner notes written by Fenriz.
Playing Enemy Begin North American Tour
Playing Enemy will begin a North American Tour starting Sept. 5th in support of their forthcoming Ephemera Mini-CD (Obtuse Mule) and their recently released full-length debut Cesarean (Escape Artist).
The North American tour, the bands second, will kick-off in its hometown of Seattle on Friday, September 5th at Chop Suey and extend for six weeks. Along the way Playing Enemy will share venues with the likes of Snapcase, Boy Sets Fire, Mastodon, Burnt By the Sun, Isis, LickGoldensky, Anodyne, and many more.
Playing Enemy features former members of noise-core luminaries Rorschach, Kiss It Goodbye and NineIronSpitfire.

Cover art will be supplied by infamous German artist Thomas Ewerhard (Sodom, Hypocrisy, Kataklysm) and the final track listing is as follows: More...
Helloween Confirm Guitarist
Germany's Helloween have finally confirmed, via the band's official website, the addition of former Freedom Call guitarist Sascha Gerstner to the group's ranks. Gerstner replaces Roland Grapow, who was dismissed from the band last year.
The band is said to be nearly done with the pre-recording process for its much-anticipated new album at singer Andy Deris' studio, Mi Sueno, in Tenerife, Spain. An early 2003 release is expected.
Gorgoth Enter Studio, Line-up Changes
Gorgoroth have entered the studio in their hometown of Bergen, Norway. According to King Ov Hell, “Eight brutal, Satanic tracks have already been recorded.” Infernus, King and Kvitrafn have finished their parts and are awaiting the release of Ghaal from prison. He is slated to enter the studio in September when he will get some time off from prison.
In other news, guitarist Tormentor has left the band. No official word on why he chose to depart, but Gorgoroth has decided to continue as a four-piece. They will use a session guitarist for live performances.
