Unearthing the Metal Underground: Delphian
A new prog death metal outfit by the name of Delphian has emerged from Los Angeles. Brothers Jason (guitars) and Matthew Williams (vocals) formed the project while they attended Musicians Institute in LA. While the act is essentially a duo, the recording of their debut album includes the talents of some seasoned metal musicians: bassist Martin Rygiel (Decapitated, Lux Occulta) and drummer extraordinaire Kevin Talley (Suffocation, Dying Fetus). The unit will be self-releasing its debut, “Somnambulant Foregoer,” on November 12. The release’s nine tracks clock in at around 47 minutes, and the energy is obviously dark, the music is clearly tech death, prog and groove-based. More...
Twelve Foot Ninja Unveils New Music Video
Heavy fusion rockers Twelve Foot Ninja have released "Over and Out" with guest vocals by the enigmatic Tatiana Shmayluk, frontwoman of metal band Jinjer. It’s their third single from Twelve Foot Ninja’s upcoming album "Vengeance" (out 15th October 2021). Accompanying the single is a music video and, in true Twelve Foot Ninja form, it delivers in spades. The video was shot in three countries: Finland, Ukraine, and Australia with three separate teams. The main part of the clip was shot just days after performing to a full capacity audience at Download UK. You can check out the video below.
When asked to summarise the video, guitarist Stevic MacKay said it like this: "A man covered in cow s**t wanders the Australian bush seeking clarity. Tortured by recurring dreams about having no face, meeting the ferryman in a Finnish swamp, old twitchy people with straw heads, vacuuming the forest, cradling a pike and squash playing goat people who spoil Christmas and drink everyone’s dregs…The only obvious thing to do is find a door Goblin to suck 'dream gravy' (aka Vegemite) off his fingers so he can teleport to a Ukrainian mechanical genie to blow his mind with Australian metaphors about being f**ked in the head."
About the choice of Tatiana Shmayluk to feature on the track and appear in the video lead singer Kin says, "We wanted someone who could represent the lyric ‘the devil in my blood’ – both the darkness and the light. Tatiana embodies this perfectly so asking her to feature on it was a no brainer." More...
CroMagnum Streaming New EP
"Born Free" is the second EP from CroMagnum, hailing from Montreal, Canada. Leading up to this release they have given us two singles that show two different angles of the band that has only been improving since their last album in 2014.
The five tracks on the EP take the listener on a range of musical journeys, from "End Your Slavery" encouraging you to get out of the doldrums and the despair of the prison you’ve let society put you in; to the true origin story as told in "Waterval Boven"; to the reflection of trust presented in "Congregation" with its fast and furious riffs that open up into an epic chorus. There is something for everyone on this release, as the creativity is endless, as shown in the music videos and the comic book. Maximus Rex explains his process in more detail:
"I come up with the basic structure of a song, usually 2-3 riffs, and then we start building it up and jamming it, making decisions about song structure along the way. Once we have a solid base, we’ll work out finer details like solos and harmonies. During that whole process, I start getting ideas for lyrics and melodies, which usually coalesce right around when the music is done. Any subject can make for good lyrics, so I don’t ever judge a theme, because if it inspires you to write, I think it will at least come off as authentic, no matter what you’re talking about."
Fans who are left wanting more shouldn’t have to wait too long, CroMagnum was originally going to record a full album, but after a slight bit of turbulence among the ranks, it was decided to focus on fewer songs. The next EP, targeted for 2022, is pretty much completely written and waiting to be recorded.
The full EP "Born Free" is out on September 17th, 2021 via the band's own label King Metal Records and can be heard in full before its official release at the following link on Metal-Rules here.

Insania To Release First Album In 12 Years
Swedish power metal masters Insania return after a lengthy hiatus with their fifth album, "V (Praeparatus Supervivet)," a powerful record packed with speedy, soaring tracks in the classic European power metal tradition with double-bass drums, great hooks and amazing solos. Showcasing a freshly inspired group, it is their first release via Frontiers Music Srl and is out on 12th November.
Insania was initially formed in 1992 by drummer Mikko Korsbäck and guitarist Henrik Juhano. Bassist Tomas Stolt was soon added, with other musicians joining for short periods. Starting out by performing covers of their favourite bands (such as Helloween and Iron Maiden), Korsbäck’s classmate Niklas Dahlin eventually joined as second guitarist and they began writing their own songs, which became steadily more melodic following the addition of keyboardist Patrik Västilä. Korsbäck himself added vocal duties to his CV until singer David Henriksson joined in 1997.
The union between the band's ambitions and Henriksson’s vocals were a match made in heaven. Signing to House of Kicks, a debut album entitled "World Of Ice" was released in 1999 and they would go on to release another three records with a mutating line-up before the group was put on ice in 2007. The now reformed band are ready to bring their power metal stylings back to metalheads around the globe! More...

Deeds Of Flesh Classic Lineup Reunites
Technical death metal pioneers Deeds Of Flesh unveil a classic line-up, with the return of long-time drummer Mike Hamilton. Mike's drumming style has been a huge staple in shaping the band's sound and laying the blueprint for the future of technical death metal.
The band comment: "We want to thank Darren Cesca for all of his hard work on our most recent release, Nucleus. That album would not sound the way it does without his stamp on it. Darren is one of the most professional and skilled death metal drummers out there today and we guarantee you'll be seeing him continue to push the envelope for the genre and drumming as a whole. We're very proud to have Darren as a part of the Deeds legacy and wish him all the best and a future of success!"
This news follows the recent announcement that Deeds Of Flesh will return to the stage at next year's HellFest Open Air in Clisson, France.
The band continue: "Although we wish we could be hitting the stage with our brother Erik Lindmark, we feel going forward it would be best to retain the classic Deeds line-up as much as possible."
Jacoby Kingston will return to bass and vocal duties as he has done during his entire tenure with Deeds. Ivan Munguia will make the move from bass over to 2nd guitar, an easy transition given his recent guitar work live and in the studio with Continuum.
Varius Teases New EP "Concordance"
Canada’s Varius are releasing a new EP "Concordance" later this year and the first glimpse into the mayhem within is the EP trailer, teasing at what is in store. Watch the EP trailer below.
Although melodic death metal and thrash elements are the “core” of their sound, they always want to emphasize that their influences are a lot more diverse than just those styles. They take an experimental approach to their music and often try to marry heavy metal elements together with elements from other genres.
The band says they are extremely proud of this release as they explain further:
"We think our excitement for it is going to translate to our fans. People who are already familiar with us will probably catch on to songs like “Concordance of the Legionfall” and “Gut Shoveler” right away, and new fans who are into the more extreme end of the metal spectrum will probably be attracted to those. We covered some new ground with songs like “Golden Crown” and “Lament of Dissonance”, so we think our fans will be turned on to a new (but just as heavy) aspect of our sound. With any luck, those songs might attract some new types of listeners as well." More...

Doodswens To Release Debut Album In December
Svart Records is proud to unleash the debut album from Dutch female Black Metal duo Doodswens! "Lichtvrees" (translation: fear of light) will be unveiled to the world on the 3rd of December 2021. Doodswens' Black Metal is a bleak, distorted wave of negative energy according to the tenets set by the Scandinavian originators but with their own new organic reflection of darkness. Their name translated as "Death Wish," Doodswens breathe new life into the dust of the past, inspired by the rawness of the ‘90s and capturing the black hearts of a new throng of acolytes as they ignite the gloom.
Founded in Eindhoven in 2017 by Fraukje van Burg (vocals and guitar) and Inge van der Zon (drums), Doodswens initially erupted into the underground scene in 2019 with their demo, which sent a shiver through its decaying corpse. With their debut album "Lichtvrees," Doodswens opens up the cesspit of the human condition, giving voice to our bleakest emotions through old-school black metal like a freshly dug grave. Proudly expressing feelings of inner negativity and depression, Doodswens have taken the promise of their underground roots and crystallised their very own atmospheric war of sound on "Lichtvrees," making it an enthralling and captivating inception.
With deathly conviction and intense passion they bring their music alive on stage, playing at Roadburn Festival and many esteemed nocturnal events, their cult infamy leading them to be picked for a support slot on Marduk’s upcoming tour of Europe. If you like your Black Metal served especially cold, but with wide-screen atmosphere, then Doodswens could be your new moonless catharsis. "Lichtvrees," is a highly conceptual work which deals with life and death, reaching enlightenment and fulfilling the symbolical “death wish” that Doodswens represents. Cast your shadow in the unholy light of "Lichtvrees" and discover a rising new star in the Black Metal cosmos. The first single "In Mijn Bloed" from "Lichtvrees" is out 17th of September on all digital platforms. More...

Further evolving their sound, Akiavel takes a radical approach to their musical assault, consuming the listener with dizzying maelstroms of chaos. “Væ Victis” embodies the word “death,” putting forth an intrusive battery of blistering guitars, pummeling drums, and scathing vocals that culminates in one of the most robust death metal records the genre has seen yet.
