Tim Owens Discusses Being Kicked Out of Iced Earth

Singer Tim "Ripper" Owens spoke exclusively to D.X. Ferris of the Cleveland Scene about his surprising departure from ICED EARTH three months after the release of the group's latest album, "Framing Armageddon - Something Wicked Part I."

ICED EARTH mainman/guitarist Jon Schaffer issued a statement last week announcing that the group was parting ways with Owens and was once again working with Tim's predecessor, Matt Barlow, who originally left ICED EARTH in 2003.

Speaking to the Cleveland Scene, Owens stated about his split with ICED EARTH, "I was told 30 seconds before the news hit Blabbermouth that I was let go — two weeks before Christmas. I don't think it was handled right. It's a shame it ended like that. With JUDAS PRIEST, at least the way it was handled, I'm still good friends with the band. The good thing is, I don't have to discuss ICED EARTH anymore. I can move on. I wish them luck. We're ready to go to the future." More...

Sworn Enemy Comment On Success Of European Tour

SWORN ENEMY fans can now pre-order the band's new album Maniacal - due for release on February 12th, 2008. The preorder will include the full-length CD, t-shirt, and guitar pick. Head to this location for more information.

Co-produced by Tim Lambesis (AS I LAY DYING) and Joey Z (LIFE OF AGONY), and featuring Jordan Mancino (As I Lay Dying) on session drums, the new effort sees Sworn Enemy captivatingly evolving from their hardcore roots to hard, fast and relentlessly driving thrash metal that even brings such legendary acts as EXODUS, ANTHRAX, TESTAMENT to the table.

In other news, a massive US package tour is currently in the works for early next year with more info to be announced soon.

Lorenzo Antonucci (guitars) further comments on the success of the band's recent European tour: “We just got back from our biggest European tour ever. It was amazing to meet back up with all of our friends in Hatebreed, Agnostic Front, Ignite, Evergreen Terrace, Death Before Dishonor and Ringworm. We had a blast playing to massive amounts of kids every night, and this tour will definitely be remembered. We got to be part of the biggest metal/hardcore show ever in Dresden, Germany with 3,900 people in attendance, at the same venue where Slipknot and Slayer played together and did 100 people less. As the promoter and agent told us, that’s a pretty big fucking deal! Thanks again to all the people who showed up every night. Your support means the world to us, and we're glad you like the new tunes. We hope to see all of you U.S. maniacs early next year.”

Obituary Issue Update

Legendary Florida-based death metallers OBITUARY have issued the following update:
"We had a few busy days over the weekend to get the video for 'Evil Ways' done, but we did it. It was actually a pretty good time and not too painful. Shooting videos is not any of our favourite thing to do, but I think we got some good stuff!"

"We shot at a couple of locations and really need to thank Eric and the guys from Etech, Mark Prator (RedRoom Recorders), Dan from Dan's Three Corners Bar and the guys from The Castle down in Ybor City for all their help. The director Hart [comic book stalwart and director Hart D. Fisher] and his crew did a great job and we really appreciate all their hard work."

Director Hart D. Fisher previously stated about the "Evil Ways" clip, "We're shooting in Florida, and I'm going to take this far further than just a bunch of assholes on stage playing their guitars. They want to go dark, go mean, and take this all to the horror movie level. There's going to be cameos from a ton of death metal guys also."

Dokken Post Christmas Video Online

DOKKEN's animated video for the band's holiday single, "Santa Claus Is Coming To Town", taken from the "Monster Ballads Xmas" compilation (Razor & Tie), can be viewed below (animation created by Serge Volsky).

According to CDJapan.co.jp, California hard rockers DOKKEN will release their new album, "Lightning Strikes Again", in Japan on February 6 via Nexus. The first pressing will contain an exclusive bonus track and sticker.

A rough-mix version of a brand new DOKKEN track, entitled "Oasis", is available for streaming on the band's MySpace page. The song comes off "Lightning Strikes Again", which will be released in March/April 2008 via Rhino Records in the U.S. and Frontiers Records in Europe. The follow-up to 2004's "Hell to Pay" will feature the lineup of Don Dokken (vocals), Jon Levin (guitar, ex-WARLOCK), Barry Sparks (bass, TED NUGENT, YNGWIE MALMSTEEN, MSG) and Mick Brown (drums).

"It will be a very heavy progressive record," Dokken told Deb Rao of KNAC.COM earlier in the year. "Just some cool songs, some dark songs, and some medium tempo. Some of the best work that I have done in years. I am not looking for any kind of sound. I am just writing whatever spiritual inspiration comes to me. You could say the sound is very heavy, like 'Kiss of Death'."

Rhino Records in March revisited DOKKEN's early days with a pair of releases packed with previously unissued material. The first release, a CD entitled "From Conception: Live 1981", captures DOKKEN in an early, previously unseen concert recorded before the band signed with Elektra. The second release is the DVD debut of the band's first home video, the platinum-certified "Unchain the Night", which is expanded with unreleased videos and new extended interviews with the band.

Verdict Reached On Gorgoroth Name Dispute

King Ov Hell (real name: Tom Cato Visnes) and Gaahl (real name: Kristian Eivind Espedal) from the Norwegian black metal band Gorgoroth have issued the following statement:

"Norwegian authorities at Patentstyret (Norwegian patent office) have made the verdict on the dispute over the further use of the trademark and logo 'GORGOROTH.' It has been legally determined that King and Gaahl retain the rightful ownership and use of the name and logo, now and in the future.

"King and Gaahl will not give a detailed public statement on this verdict however they have both remained confident this result would indeed be the final conclusion.

"Any third parties who use the name GORGOROTH will from now on be met with legal prosecution.

"GORGOROTH, King and Gaahl, will not continue to work with Regain Records given their disloyal acts concerning GORGOROTH and are currently carefully choosing a new label for the release of their next full-length album.

"King and Gaahl are now focused on making music for the next album and with planning some very special shows for 2008. As previously announced, GORGOROTH will headline at Wacken Open Air."

GORGOROTH's current touring lineup includes Gaahl on vocals, King ov Hell on bass, Nick Barker (ex-DIMMU BORGIR, CRADLE OF FILTH) on drums, and Teloch (NIDINGR, UMORAL, 1349) and Sykelig on guitars.

As previously reported, GORGOROTH guitarist Infernus (real name: Roger Tiegs) — who is involved in a legal dispute with his estranged bandmates over the rights to the group's name — has launched the "official" web site and MySpace page for his version of GORGOROTH. According to a posting on the site, GORGOROTH's lineup "has been subject to several changes — about 25 different musicians have been involved with the band since its inception . . . GORGOROTH at present consists of Infernus as the sole permanent member, which means that no live appearances are planned for the immediate future. Infernus is busy finishing the material for the next full-length album, 'Quantos Possund Ad Satanitatem Trahunt', to be released on Regain Records. Some members have already been added to GORGOROTH's future lineup, and an announcement concerning this will be issued before long."

Sweden's Regain Records issued a press release last week stating that it would continue its co-operation with the band's original member Infernus with a new lineup. Regain Records "recognizes Infernus as the rightful owner of the bands name, logo and trademark, and is prepared to take any legal steps necessary to prevent any third part from exploiting it, artistically and commercially," the label said.

Negativa Introduce Female Vocalist

NEGATIVA, the Quebec-based band featuring former GORGUTS members Steeve Hurdle (guitars) and Luc Lemay (guitars), along with Etienne Gallo (drums, ex-AUGURY) and Miguel Valade (bass, ex-ION DISSONANCE), is thrilled to announce the addition of new female vocalist, Roxanne Constantin, who has worked with QUO VADIS and Augury.

Commented Hurdle : "With her emotional voice, her love and knowledge of music, Roxanne will add a fresh colour to our sound. We felt that it was time for us to explore new avenues, so we’ve made significant changes to our musical approach. The four musicians are now involved in the writing process, which brings more diversity to our sound. Our music is therefore becoming more experimental, progressive and ambient. This natural evolution will broaden our horizons sound-wise. We’re really looking forward to share our new creation with all of you."

Last June, the band returned to Wild Studio to record the instrumental versions of 3 new songs: 'Deepen The Mystery' (9:46), 'The Loss' (14:56), '…And The Unknown' (6:52). Vocal tracks will be recorded early next year.

Negativa's debut-MCD (2006) can be heard online, but the most recent song on that demo was written six years ago.

According to singer Mike Tramp, the album title could be interpreted in two ways. "In a musical sense, we have taken a step back in time rather than a step forward in time," he says. Iron Maiden To Play Croatia In August

British heavy metal legends IRON MAIDEN have scheduled a headlining concert at the Split City Stadium in Split, Croatia on Sunday, August 10 as part of their Somewhere Back In Time World Tour 2008.

Commented bassist Steve Harris: "This will be our very first visit ever to the city of Split and we're very excited about getting there to play on this tour. We have visited Croatia only a couple of times before, both times in Zagreb much further north in the country. The first time was way back in 1986 and last time on the 'Give Me Ed' tour three or four years ago. So to us this will just be like playing somewhere new for the first time which always gets us going on stage and I'm sure many of our friends from Zagreb will be making the trip down south for this special show."

Headline News

The Red Shore Singer Killed In Crash

The West Australian reports that the lead singer of the Geelong, Victoria, Australia-based heavy metal band THE RED SHORE has died in a crash on a New South Wales highway, according to the group's booking agent.

An employee for Pan Studios in Geelong said the company had received news that the singer, believed to be about 23, had died in the crash.

The group's driver and merchandiser had also been killed, she said.

The men died after their minivan veered off the Pacific Highway north of Coffs Harbour and hit a tree.

One man died at the scene and seven others were taken to Coffs Harbour Hospital.

One of the injured men, a 30-year-old who had been trapped in the van wreckage for an hour, died in hospital from serious head injuries.

THE RED SHORE were touring with U.S. death metal outfit ALL SHALL PERISH on the "Christmas Carnage" tour, when the crash occurred.

Both bands played at Brisbane's Club Phoenix on Tuesday night and were scheduled to play at Hermann's Bar at Sydney University on Wednesday night.

The van carrying eight men, most aged in their 20s, plunged down an embankment before rolling into a tree at about 7am (AEDT).

NSW police later said the two men killed were aged 22 and 27, and said relatives had asked that their names not be released.

Jarrod, a barman at The National Hotel in Geelong, where the band has played, described the lead singer as quiet and "chilled out".

"He was a nice, quiet guy, contrary to the band's music," Jarrod said.

Sally Laver, the owner of Pan Studios, said THE RED SHORE's musical career had just started to take off.

The band drew crowds of up to 200 people in their home town of Geelong, she said.

"They're one of our bigger bands," she said.

Ms Laver said the singer was "wonderful."

"He was a very sensitive young man."

"He was very passionate about everything he did."

Wednesday 13 Answers Vampire Freaks Questions

Former MURDERDOLLS frontman Wednesday 13 recently spoke to VampireFreaks.com about his solo career. The following is an excerpt from the interview:

Q: You've been in the music scene for a while now and you've got a huge fanbase. How long have you been performing music, and when, as well as where, did your career in music begin? What made you become a artist? Also, in what genre of music would you place yourself?

13: "I began learning guitar at age 13, ironically. I played my first live show at my high school at age 15 with some guys I knew from school. After seeing KISS and Alice Cooper and just the whole rebellion and imagery of that kinda rock n' roll I knew I had to do this. My musical style is all over the place and I leave that up to the listener. Some hear punk, some metal, some rock, maybe all together something different, I don't know..it's whatever you hear...give it a name. The image sometimes automatically assumes the goth thing but its way more and beyond that."

Q: Wednesday 13 has become pretty popular, most of it is fans that have followed you guys since the begginning. Do you think the size of it has grown, or stayed about the same since The Murderdolls?

13: "It's changed a lot over the years for sure. Some fans have stayed, some are long gone, but their are new ones popping up every year too. I feel like our status in the USA is growing way more than the Murderdolls, but I can only say that because Murderdolls did minimal touring in the USA."

As previously reported, Wednesday 13 recently announced the first tour dates of his upcoming All American Massacre tour. They are as follows:

February
7 - Phoenix, AZ - Cell Block
8 - Corona, CA - Showcase Theatre
13 - Los Angeles, CA - The Whisky A Go Go
14 - Sacramento, CA - The Boardwalk
17 - Seattle, WA - Studio Seven
20 - Colorado Springs, CO - The Black Sheep
21 - Denver, CO - Marquis Theatre
29 - Detroit, MI - The I-Rock Nightclub

More dates will be anounced soon.

Support bands on the tour include THE VINCENT BLACK SHADOW, THE AKA'S and CREATURE FEATURE.

Hellyeah Announce Second Leg Of Tour

HELLYEAH have announced the second leg of their national headlining Balls, Volume, Strength Tour with MACHINE HEAD, NONPOINT and ANKLA supporting. After wrapping the first leg of the successful tour December 16 in Amarillo, TX, the trek will re-launch January 25 in Clifton Park, NY, with dates running through March.

Featuring PANTERA and DAMAGEPLAN double-kick maestro, drummer Vinnie Paul, singer Chad Gray and guitarist Greg Tribbett (both from MUDVAYNE), along with guitarist Tom Maxwell (from NOTHINGFACE) and bassist Bob Zilla (from Damageplan), Hellyeah have just released their third single 'Thank You'; it’s a shout-out to the band’s recently departed family members: Vinnie’s brother Dimebag Darrell, Tom’s mother, and Chad’s grandmother.

“It’s a very emotional track for anyone who’s been through a crazy loss,” Chad said in a March 2007 feature in Revolver. “Dime was brutally murdered. I watched my grandmother, who was this thriving, full-of-life soul, get whittled down to nothing because of cancer. I just felt we owed a big thank you to all of them.” “It was very powerful,” says VINNIE of the first time he heard the completed song. “It made me think of how much my brother had done for me, and how much we had done together, and how much I miss him and how important it is for me and everyone to know we love him and appreciate him.”

In other news, Hellyeah recently released their Below The Belt DVD which offers fans an inside look at the band’s life on the road with clips dating back to the day the band was formed. Below The Belt debuted at #21 and features footage from multiple live performances and music videos, as well as personal interviews with all band members. Other highlights include snippets of the band’s first recording sessions at Dimebag Darrell’s legendary Chasin’ Jason studio in Dallas, TX, as well as backstage footage from the band’s world tour.

Hellyeah’s self-titled debut CD entered Billboard Top 200 Albums Chart at #9 earlier this year, with current sales of over 250,000.

Labels have increased the price of the CD’s that bands buy back from the label to sell at concerts. In some cases the amount is only 50 cents, but even that adds up. Roadrunner however has increased their buy back price to $12.00 meaning their artists would likely have to sell CD’s for $15.
