Singer Tim "Ripper" Owens spoke exclusively to D.X. Ferris of the Cleveland Scene about his surprising departure from ICED EARTH three months after the release of the group's latest album, "Framing Armageddon - Something Wicked Part I."

ICED EARTH mainman/guitarist Jon Schaffer issued a statement last week announcing that the group was parting ways with Owens and was once again working with Tim's predecessor, Matt Barlow, who originally left ICED EARTH in 2003.

Speaking to the Cleveland Scene, Owens stated about his split with ICED EARTH, "I was told 30 seconds before the news hit Blabbermouth that I was let go — two weeks before Christmas. I don't think it was handled right. It's a shame it ended like that. With JUDAS PRIEST, at least the way it was handled, I'm still good friends with the band. The good thing is, I don't have to discuss ICED EARTH anymore. I can move on. I wish them luck. We're ready to go to the future."

Tim's new top priority is BEYOND FEAR, an Ohio-based based power-speed hybrid. That band's 2006 self-titled debut received some of the best reviews of Owens' storied career. The frontman says a second record is nearly written, and local fans can expect some live shows soon.

Owens is still being managed by Wendy Dio, wife of metal legend Ronnie James Dio. BEYOND FEAR remains attached to international metalworks SPV Records. The singer may move forward with a new WINTERS BANE album and tour, if the project generates label interest; BANE bassist Dennis Hayes was dismissed from ICED EARTH along with Owens.

"I've already had a lot of offers," said Owens, who is now regarded as one of metal's top voices. "It's nice to get the support."

He is a very talented singer, but when it comes down to either him or Barlow for Iced Earth, I got to go with Matt. IMO

Heh, I kinda got the feeling from Schaffer's previous statements that Owens was kind of just dumped on the street. He is probably right that it wasn't the best way to have handled it. But honestly, what other way is there? When you weigh Matt Barlow against Tim Owens the choice is clear, no sense beating around the bush.

Tim Owens has a high enough profile in the metal community that I personally would never think of treating him like Iced Earth apparently have. It creates ill-will towards the band. Or at the very least, a diminished respect for the members. On the other hand, Matt Barlow is definitely the right choice for IE vocalist, as ridiculously good a singer as Owens is... Coulda been handled a lot better, but a good move in the end. Pretty good of Owens not to be slagging them off all over the joint about it.

Owens had to know that he'd have to step aside if Barlow ever wanted to come back. That's a big problem with joining established bands especially when the original member left on good terms.

I haven't picked up the new Iced Earth album yet. Maybe this weekend.

I have the utmost respect for Ripper Owens. He is the consummate professional. He did the right thing by just accepting that he was replaced by Barlow, without blasting Iced Earth/Schaffer. I like them both, really, but I have grown more fond of Owen's music/singing ability since Barlow has been out of the metal spotlight for a while. Winter's Bane and Beyond Fear are in good hands! hail the RIPPER..

I always liked Barlow over Owens when it came to Iced Earth vocals, however....I think Schaffer is a little 2 sided on this issue, if you go back and look at what he said about Barlow leaving and Owens joining the band, about how he feels like a kid again, the band will go to new heights...etc, now he basically writes Owens off that fast and says Iced Earth is back to the true Iced Earth now that Barlow is back.
