Unearthing Morte Incandescente

“Depressive Suicidal Black Metal” is one of the most embarrassing styles of heavy metal, one that is essentially the personification of the stereotypical “emo kid” crying in the corner. In stark contrast to such fodder, some black metal bands have plumbed the depths of hateful, depressive madness, negative energy and suicidal themes. Germany’s Bethlehem comes to mind, of course. And Portugal’s long running black metal act Morte Incandescente is another. More...

Armored Saint Confirms New Live Album/DVD Details

On October 22, Armored Saint will release a new CD/DVD, "Symbol Of Salvation Live," via Metal Blade Records, to celebrate the seminal album's 30th anniversary. For a first preview of Symbol Of Salvation Live, a live video for the title track can be viewed below.

There are many ways to celebrate the anniversary of an important release in a band's career, and for Symbol Of Salvation's thirtieth birthday - an album vocalist John Bush refers to as Armored Saint's "cornerstone record" - comes Symbol Of Salvation Live. A combination live album and video of the band playing the album in its entirety at New York's famed Gramercy Theatre during their 2018 tour, it captures the power, diversity and peerless songwriting contained within it. "I felt like showing 'Symbol' in another light was a great homage to the record itself," states bassist Joey Vera. "Also, having all the fans be there and part of that event is a way for us to say 'Thank you!' For, without them, we can't do any of this in the first place."

There is no denying that Symbol Of Salvation stands out of the band's catalogue as something truly special, something that the band recognize as readily as their rabid fanbase. "It links our past to our future," says Bush. "I believe it was the time that we honestly thought we could do whatever we wanted to musically and it would somehow work. There's a magical feeling about it and it continues to gain mystique every year." However, the band went through some adverse times while initially writing the songs that would make up the record, being without a label for three years prior to signing with Metal Blade, and in 1990 - before they headed into the studio - losing founding guitarist Dave Prichard to leukemia. This ultimately served to light a fire under the band, pushing them to deliver their very best. "Because we had lifted ourselves out of these ashes, as it were, we felt a very strong desire to make every little thing count," elaborates Vera. "It felt more important than anything we had ever done before. For one thing, we didn't want Dave's writing contributions to be in vain. Also, we were on a mission to let the world hear what we'd been working on for three years. Funny thing is, that during the separation of the metal genre between glam and thrash from '85 to '89, we kinda felt like we had to prove something to everyone else. But while making 'Symbol', we also had something to prove, except this time, we had to prove it to ourselves." More...

Overkill Announces "The Atlantic Years" Box Set

An integral part of the early-'80s thrash metal movement that spawned acts like Metallica and Anthrax, New Jersey's Overkill garnered a reputation for brutal, pounding speed and technique.

Taking their moniker from the 1979 Motörhead album of the same name, an early demo; "Power In Black," made waves in the underground tape-trading circuit and caught the attention of Megaforce Records, which issued the band's full-length studio debut, "Feel The Fire," in 1985.

High-profile shows alongside luminaries like Slayer and Anthrax followed, and with the American thrash scene in full tilt, Overkill inked a major-label deal with Atlantic, which put out their sophomore effort, 1987's uncompromising "Taking Over." This was followed quickly in 1988 by the equally uncompromising, "Under The Influence" which spawned the MTV hit, "Hello From The Gutter."

Continuing their breakneck pace, the band issued the Terry Date -produced "Years Of Decay" the following year in 1989, which saw them pushing their sound in a more epic direction, while maintaining the neck-snapping attack of their debut. Expanding their lineup to a five piece in 1990 they released the brooding and relentlessly heavy "Horrorscope," which introduced elements of doom into the mix and would go on to become a defining release and fan favorite.

Overkill continued to move toward a more epic Sabbath style on 1993's "I Hear Black" but switched up again on 1994's "W.F.O." which marked a return to the whiplash-inducing thrash of the past. More...

On September 17th, Criminal will release their new album, Sacrificio, via Metal Blade Records. For a preview of Sacrificio, a lyric video for the new single "Live on Your Knees" can be viewed below, as well as a recent interview Metal Underground conducted with frontman Anton Reisenegger.

Anton Reisenegger (vocals/guitars) comments: "'Live on your Knees' is the opening track and also the first track Danilo and I wrote for the album. It's probably one of the fastest and most brutal songs on the record. Its late 90s death metal and hardcore vibes punch you straight in the face and don't let go. The lyrics are a message of freedom and independence in these times of turmoil and uncertainty. Ben Liepelt did a killer job with the lyric video, and we can't wait for everyone to see/hear/feel it!" Immortal Guardian Shares New Music Video

The extreme progressive/power metal group Immortal Guardian have unveiled a music video for "Candlelight," the latest single from their critically acclaimed concept album "Psychosomatic." The clip which was produced by Brett Rivera and features former Cirque Du Soleil performer Olga Pikhienko and world-renown dancer Danny Davalos filmed at the location at the Valley of Fire outside Las Vegas – is being released in the wake of the band's return to the road, which began last week with a concert in their newly adopted hometown and was followed by a show in guitarist/keyboardist Gabriel Guardian’s original hometown of Harlingen, Texas.

Watch "Candlelight" below.

Says Gabriel, "'Candlelight' is a beautiful song written by (vocalist) Carlos Zema as a tribute to all of our loved ones that passed away during these hard times. 2020 was a very difficult year for all of us, with lockdowns, deaths in the family and having to cancel all of our plans as a band. Making our album 'Psychosomatic' helped us cope with the tough times and be able to channel our thoughts and emotions into lyrics and melodies. ‘Candlelight’ was a very tough song for Carlos and I to do with all of the emotional weight it brought, but in the end, we were very happy with how it came out and finalized on the album. This song goes out to all our friends, family and heroes who are no longer with us today." More...

Trauma Reveals New Vocalist

Metal vets, Trauma, have announced that the band has welcomed a new singer, Brian Allen, into their lineup, and are currently at work on a new album.

“We welcome Brian Allen to the Trauma camp,” says the band in a statement. “We are very happy to have Brian as our new vocalist and look forward to recording and playing on stages around the globe soon. He came highly recommended by our producer Juan Urteaga after the unfortunate passing of Trauma's original vocalist Donny Hillier. We cannot wait to hit the stage.

“Trauma’s new album was being written during the pandemic of 2020. We decided to include songs that had faster heavier riffs, blast beats, perhaps just a more modern approach. September 2020, vocalist Donny Hillier passed away. We were shocked by this tragedy, Don, wanted the band to go on. We almost didn't. However through management and friends, we decided to move forward and even come up with heavier sounding material. Also the addition of vocalist Brian Allen has added a different dimension within the band that we are very excited about. We have many things in the works and are looking forward once again to the future, keeping the torch lit!!! We are hopeful the fans will like what will be available to them soon. Along with some live dates.”

The new Trauma lineup consists of Brian Allen - lead vocals, Kris Gustofson - drums, Greg Christian - bass guitar, Joe Fraulob - guitars and Steve Robello – guitars.

Kris also had the following to add about the addition of Brian: “We are delighted to have Brian Allen as our new vocalist. Our beloved brother, Donny Hillier, was not easy to replace, if not impossible. Brian is a veteran musician who has been on the scene for many years and was a member of Vicious Rumors, Dark Star Choir and others, and will be a new driving force within the band. Besides being a killer vocalist, He is a great guy and the perfect fit. We are looking forward to giving people a listen to what the new Trauma will sound like soon, along with live dates.” More...

Ghost Bath Debuts "Convince Me To Bleed" Video

Recently, atmospheric black metallers Ghost Bath announced their fourth full-length album, "Self Loather" will be released on October 29th via Nuclear Blast Records. On the album, the band closes out the trilogy—tragedy, ecstasy, and dread/hatred—and hosts their most devastating and dark music to date. Today, the band releases the music video for "Convince Me to Bleed." Watch the video that was edited and directed by Austin Scherzberg as well as written and co-directed by John Olivier below.

Ghost Bath's fourth full-length sets the mood meter to desolation/antipathy—and never quite let's go. Produced by the band with Xander Moser engineering at Tree Speak Recording Studio in Minneapolis and mixed by Jack Shirley (Deafheaven, Bosse-De-Nage) at The Atomic Garden Recording Studios in Oakland, Self Loather is a sonic exercise in shadow, nuance, and, most of all, power. The band enlisted Zdzislaw Beksinski to create the cover artwork which was licensed through the Muzeum Historyczne w Sanoku.

Below is the "Self Loather" tracklist:

1. Convince Me to Bleed
2. Hide from the Sun (feat. CJ McMahon of Thy Art Is Murder)
3. Shrines of Bone
4. Sanguine Mask
5. Crystal Lattice
6. Sinew and Vein (feat. Graf of Psychonaut 4)
7. I hope death finds me well
8. For it is a Veil

Rivers Of Nihil Posts New Music Video Online

On September 24th, Rivers of Nihil will release their fourth full-length, "The Work," via Metal Blade Records. For a preview of the album, a video for the new single "Focus" (directed by David Brodsky) can be viewed below.

Brody Uttley (lead guitar, keyboards) comments: "For the 'Focus' video, we once again recruited Mr. David Brodsky, Allie Woest and the team at MyGoodEye. This video tells the story of an individual in a fractured state of mind confronting the darkest parts of his inner self and battling with a physical manifestation of his deepest fears and concerns; the worst parts of himself. This manifestation represents the presence in all of our heads that tries to pull us down into the throes of self-destructive behavior and patterns of thinking. The creature that he is interacting with becomes more apparent as the video progresses (with the main character slipping deeper into psychosis) until the end when he loses his battle and is plunged down into the blackness once and for all; existing permanently in the prison that his delusions have constructed for him...Perhaps finally at peace, or just as likely: never again at peace." Jinjer Releases "Wallflower" Music Video

Jinjer are without doubt the hardest working band in the metal scene: Now, shortly before the release of their long-awaited and critically acclaimed studio record, Wallflowers – out this Friday via Napalm Records – everybody is talking about them. Since announcing the album, the band has graced numerous renowned international magazine covers, booked the biggest stories, sold out countless tour dates and their first two new singles, "Vortex" and "Mediator", both cracked the multi-million stream mark in no time.

With their new track, "Wallflower," Jinjer prove once again that they can't be pigeonholed by offering a surprisingly tranquil delve into their multi-faceted sound. The title track not only underlines highly talented vocalist Tatiana Shmayluk's clean and equally bold vocal power, but also supports her convincing, forceful growls and adds a persuasive character of wrath, overwhelming heaviness and pure abrasiveness. The accompanying high-quality music video displays the band's cinematic and audiovisual strength and their ability for impressive metaphors and immediately causes goosebumps at the same time: Socio-critical and precise, JINJER have reached a new level – lyrically and musically.

Jinjer on the new single/video:
"As the director Basil Pereverzev told us 'Never give up and act in due course with the forces of the reality you have chosen for yourself' … 'Wallflower' is one of a kind. This is a song we have lived through time and time again. Every single note, every percussion hit, every word Tatiana sings is well-thought through and shines. And the story which rolls out in the video is the best compliment to this song. Definitely the most multilayered work we have delivered sonically and visually. We hope that our fans can also relate the video and take something meaningful from it as well." More...
