An Encounter With Guyanese Metal Band Brutus

Chris Edey wrote a piece in the Univerisity of Waterloo's Imprint Online edition about his encounter with Guyanese metal band Brutus:

Deep in the heartland of Soca, a rock and roll revolution is being planned, the likes of which would bring a tear to the eye of even jaded world-weary ex-hippies. The conspirators: Brutus, Guyana's foremost (and perhaps only) heavy metal ensemble. Theirs is a story of a one-band struggle against apathy, equipment problems, recording nightmares and a local music scene that regards their chosen genre as an oddity at best and an abomination at worst.

Kurt, the lead guitarist, and I got to talking about music, making it big and Guyanese society. He said that Brutus would break out and make a statement to shatter Guyana's political morass and to energize the youth of the nation (does anyone know the way to Woodstock?). But, he has more practical problems, such as organizing a revolution on weekends and after 5 p.m. on weekdays. Furthermore, the rather haphazard enforcement of copyright laws in Guyana and the paucity of high-quality recording equipment and staff are constant obstacles to aspiring musicians.

Brutus was certainly well on their way to meeting their fans' needs when the challenges of being a heavy metal band in the land of Soca caught up with them. Only two songs into the show they blew out the Sidewalk's sound system in a flurry of sparks and smoking transistors. To add insult to injury, they had been using the café's back-up system, their normal set-up having been rented out to a Soca band that same night.

Trent Reznor On George Bush's Re-Election

Nine Inch Nails mastermind Trent Reznor has commented on the re-election of President George W. Bush via posting on the group's web site. "One step closer to the end of the world," he writes. "The one-two combo of corporate greed and organized religion apparently proved too much for reason, sanity and compassion. It's a sad and shameful day to be an American."

As previously reported, Nine Inch Nails have set "With Teeth" as the title of their new album, tentatively due in March 2005. The follow-up to 1999's "The Fragile", which previously carried the working title of "Bleedthrough", is currently being mixed with Alan Moulder (The Cure, Smashing Pumpkins) and the final track listing is being discussed and determined, according to a posting at the group's official web site.

"With Teeth" was recorded in part at Sound City Studio in Van Nuys, Ca., and features a guest appearance on drums by former NIRVANA drummer/current Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl.

Sensory Records recording artists Redemption are going to be utilizing the servives of "an amazing producer" during the mixing process for their new album, tentatively titled "The Fullness of Time", according to a posting on their web site. "Got to keep in a secret for a few more weeks but Bernie [Versailles, guitar] and I are getting on a plane to Europe in 9 days to go get it done," Nicolas van Dyk, Redemption's primary songwriter and guitarist/keyboardist, writes. "This is going to be a great-sounding CD and I can't wait for you all to hear it!" An eary 2005 release is expected.

Fred Durst Says Limp Bizkit Has Never Been More...

Limp Bizkit frontman Fred Durst has posted the following message on the band's official web site:

"Deep in the mountains is where we have landed to explore our fears and confront the obstacles that lye [sic] before us. I have separated myself from the over stimulation Los Angeles, or any other populated city, can bring. There are no sounds of traffic, police sirens, and airplanes in the air. There are no chain restaraunts, bars, and clubs around. There are only the mountains and they have their own sounds. These monstrous beings seem to be protecting the silence that lives under the trees and it is very moving in a horrific way. Even though the man made clutter is gone from most of these parts the silence becomes so loud and intense that you realize there is life out here more powerful than you could ever imagine. I grew up in the mountains and through the years I've lost my perspective along the way and ended up in the metropolis of stimulation. I am grateful to have gone full circle at this moment in my life and found myself right back in the enviornment that my life was based upon. It becomes a part of the blood running through your veins and never really leaves. Your mind becomes stimulated by the freedom to explore the forbidden chambers inside and the level of what was once considered sanity is now balanced by useful insanity. A fine line of reference for someone in my shoes having accepted the cards I've been delt. The music coming from this studio is relentless to say the least. It speaks loudly and clearly to the demons inside of me and the rest of the band from the feel of things. The honesty in the music we are making is so raw and pounding that I feel like it demands my attention and challenges me to rationalize with what the truth to me really is today. I am living in the now and can only know what is when it is. Limp Bizkit has, in no way, never been more relentless and in your face until right now. Time to buckle up."
