Marilyn Manson Teaches Class At Temple University

Marilyn Manson surprised an unsuspecting class of students Monday (Nov. 22) at Temple University in Philadelphia when he became the Professor of an Art and Society class for the day (photo), as part of MTV's "Stand-In" series. Manson's spin as a philosophy professor was the latest in a regular network feature that has included Sen. John Kerry, Snoop Dogg, and Jesse Jackson.

According to the Philadelphia Inquirer, the students gasped when Manson — decked out in a black suit, shirt and tie, platform shoes with a chrome toe box, his trademark dark lipstick and bulbous sunglasses — entered with a small entourage.

"Oh my god, it's Marilyn Manson," one student said, and the class burst into applause. More...

Arch Enemy Give Death Metal A New Voice

Arch Enemy singer, Angela Gossow, recently spoke to the staff at Chart Attack about their lyrics:

It’s a heavy year end for British death metallers Arch Enemy. Not only are they wrapping up an opening slot for chums Cradle Of Filth in support of their own latest EP, "Dead Eyes See No Future," but they’re also frantically writing a follow-up full-length to 2003’s "Anthems Of Rebellion."

Singer Angela Gossow doesn’t really feel the tension, though. She’s managed to avoid it because lyrics just seem to be pouring out of her. Taking a few moments to phone up the old ChartAttack office, Gossow’s mind is all lyrics. It’s all she wants to discuss, relating that while she’s not quite ready to tell us what the new songs are about, we’ll be duly impressed.

"I could tell them to you now, but you need to hear my lyrics in the context of the music to fully appreciate them," she says. "Not that it will matter, because whenever you write lyrics, no one understands their point anyway. They all take their own elements from it even if the words are directly drawn (from) our own experiences."

Born From Pain Sign To Metal Blade

Metal Blade Records has officially signed Born From Pain to a worldwide deal. The Dutch hardcore/metal band was formed in 1997 and has since released three albums with GSR. Here's what the group had to say about the move:

"We are proud to be part of one of the world's most authentic and dedicated labels when it comes to hard and heavy music. We couldn't be happier to become part of it's decades old history. Being on the roster with great bands like Bolt Thrower, Unearth, Cataract, Cannibal Corpse, God Dethroned and Amon Amarth to name a few, is an honor. We are convinced that the cooperation between Metal Blade and us will bring both parties what they were looking for and us as a band to be able to conquer new horizons. We are looking forward to the future and what it will bring."

The group is currently in the pre-production phase for their upcoming album, "In Love With The End." The album is being produced by Tue Madsen (Cataract) at Antfarm Studios and will hit stores in mid-April.

Amaran Guitarist Leaves Band

France's Listenable Records has issued a statement in response to Swedish progressive Amaran guitarist Kari Kainulainen's assertion that his disatisfaction with the label was the main reason he chose to leave the band.

Listenable's statement reads as follows:

We feel Amaran has always been a very promising band and we've always tried to support them as much as possible as well as all the other artists on our roster.

The band has unfortunately become frustrated because we didn't want them to record the new album so soon like one year after the 'Pristine in Bondage' album release coz we could only release this new album in September 2005 (9 months later) in order to give it the right focus and use our best efforts to possibly put them on tour right after the release, which is quite hard considering the heavy competition in European tours nowadays and also get a release date in coordination with the Japanese company involved in this new album with us.

We thought a recording period right before the summer was also more suitable to us financially due to the priorities we have coming out first semester 2005. We kept being unaware of this growth of frustration (apparently leading to Kari's departure) until the news was spread today on the 23rd of November.

We're hoping the fans willl not have misconceptions reading Kari's news and about our work.

Amaran's sophomore effort, "Pristine In Bondage," was released in January through Listenable Records. The follow-up to "A World Depraved" was recorded at Studio Underground in Västerås, Sweden and is the group's first since the departure of bassist Mikael Andersson (he has since been replaced by Julie Laughs No More drummer Ronnie Bergerståhl).

Children Of Bodom Checks In With Tour Report

Two years ago, Children of Bodom were an underground phenomenon, but with three major U.S. tours now under their belt, the group has become one of the genre's most acclaimed artists.

Straight off the heels of their highly successful tour alongside Fear Factory and Lamb of God, bassist Henkka T. Blacksmith checks in with the following report:

Unfortunately, our third U.S. tour has just ended. It was a long one, but it was very well worth it. When I first heard the lineup, I was very excited about the package. It sounded so strong with Fear Factory and Lamb of God, and it turned out to be a very successful tour. Not only that was great, but also each band musically was just my taste. I enjoyed Throwdown's hardcore aggression, Fear Factory's very tight playing, and Lamb of God's great show. I was watching those shows in the crowd almost every night.

What was the most important thing, of course, was that everybody -- from the bands to their crews -- were so nice, friendly and helpful. From the beginning, we felt very welcome on the tour. It was good partying and drinking with these people. So, we wanna thank everybody who made this great HC/Metal tour possible! We also wanna thank our fans who came to see us. See you again soon.

In other news, Children of Bodom "Trashed, Lost & Strungout" EP is to be released on February 22.

The Diabolical Return Of Dissection

Top40-Charts.com has written the following article on Dissection's return:

In the annals of exquisite Scandinavian dark metal music, few have been graced with the title "legend." Entry into the ranks of such honor requires a strict doctrine of vision, passion, and above all, an unyielding compulsion for conceiving extraordinary and extreme, bleak musical landscapes. Such artists befitting of the renown include names that echo into eternity: Mayhem, Emperor, Darkthrone, and Sweden's Dissection. Escapi Music/Screaming Ferret Wreckords is pleased to announce the return of Dissection with the release of Maha Kali.
Through a mere 2 studio albums, "The Somberlain" and "Storm of the Light's Bane" (the latter being released in 1995), Dissection's unique blend of blackened intensity with melodic integrity launched the band to the forefront of the budding 'Black Metal Scene' as well as being heralded as an originator of the much-imitated 'Gothenburg sound'. Led by vocalist/guitarist/visionary Jon Nodtveidt, the band was primed for metal greatness, as a true explorer of genuine musical darkness.

However, due to internal conflict and "legal complications," Dissection was forced to disband in 1997, with demo compilations and unreleased recordings to further fuel the band's legendary acclaim.

Agnostic Front To Host Headbangers Ball

Airing this Saturday, November 27th at 10:00 P.M. Eastern / 7:00 P.M. Pacific, AGNOSTIC FRONT will host and premiere the video for their latest single “Peace” off the 2005 release "Another Voice".

Since 1983, AGNOSTIC FRONT, one of the most venerable and notorious outcasts of the hardcore movement, helped get messages across to the populace through their socially driven music. As one of the original hardcore bands that lived and breathed the problems that controlled their everyday New York City lifestyle, "Another Voice", out on January 25th, 2005, gives power and strength to these ignored voices. Their most intense album yet, "Another Voice", offers a violent attack on today’s civility, exposing some of society’s worst problems with a genuine street-bred angst and fire that only few bands possess.
