Katatonia Signs With Napalm Records
Napalm Records is beyond proud to announce the worldwide signing of legendary Swedish masters of melancholy Katatonia. The band has inked a worldwide record deal with the leading Austrian rock and metal label.
Piercing through the core in 1991 when Katatonia was brought to life by the inimitable Jonas Renkse (now vocalist) and renowned guitarist Anders Nyström, the unit has taken a fascinating journey from their heavy atmospheric extreme metal beginnings in the early 90s underground metal scene to their current status as a unique, free-spirited progressive rock amalgamation that stretches beyond the boundaries of standard music. Each stunning work of Katatonia is tantamount to a cathartic experience – from their seminal debut, the legendary "Dance Of December Souls" (1993), to their most recent haunting masterpiece, the critically acclaimed "City Burials" (2020) – the latter marking their most successful release to date (debuting at #6 GER, #5 FI, etc).
The five-piece has never failed in evolving its sound and unique identity into something that is known as one of Sweden's top-notch musical forces today. Stay tuned for more exciting news coming soon!
Katatonia on the signing:
"As Katatonia is just about to enter a brand new chapter in its own book of history, we’re passionate the band's journey will continue onward and upward together with our new label Napalm Records."
Thomas Caser (Napalm Records) about the signing:
"Katatonia has been one of the most impactful metal acts, always progressing throughout their career. Teaming up with such an iconic act is a dream of every music fan. We are beyond excited to work with the band and their team!"

Katatonia To Release Rarities Compilation
Katatonia are set to release "Mnemosynean" on 1st October 2021 through Peaceville Records.
This new release marks 30 years since the formation of one of the most enigmatic & aurally captivating bands to grace the dark rock/prog genre, Mnemosynean contains an extensive collection of all of Katatonia’s rarities and B-sides, including tracks from the band’s numerous EPs, unheard album songs, limited special edition bonuses, cover songs, as well as a series of collaborative remixes.
The journey of Mnemosynean spans the gothic-soaked experimental epic "Scarlet Heavens" recorded all the way back in 1994, through to tracks recorded during the sessions for the stellar 2016 opus, "The Fall of Hearts."
The intriguing title of "Mnemosynean" itself represents memories & was selected because tomb inscriptions dating back to 400 BCE say that the dead could keep their memories by avoiding drinking from the Lethe, and drink instead from the stream flowing from the lake of Mnemosyne (the goddess of memory).
Following an early string of deathly doom-inspired releases which firmly & quickly established Katatonia as a leading force in the 1990s underground, the Swedes, led by Jonas Renkse & Anders Nyström, came to true prominence following a transition to a more metallic, sleek, dark & depressive rock style while fully embracing concepts of urban and social decay, but also retaining some of the distinguishing traits from their early repertoire, such as the melancholy-laced & instantly identifiable melodic guitar leads. Katatonia Announces European Tour With Solstafir
Katatonia & Solstafir will head out in January and February 2022 on the "Twilight Burials" tour, a 31-date co-headline tour of the UK and Europe.
The coming together of these two revered masters of melancholy seems only natural. For over a quarter of a century both artists have favoured the emotional connection that their music brings over all else. Theirs is a world where 'heavy' is a force of nature; where progress comes from within, outwardly changing their musical output into something almost unrecognisable from the extreme metal that carried it in the early days.
This immense tour will see Katatonia be able to take their most recent studio album, "City Burials," out on the road as, their touring plans like many bands had to be put on hold. Jonas Renkse comments “With over a year now since we played our last live show, it’s an understatement that we want to get back on stage. Add to that an album released during the pandemic with no ways to promote it through touring, it is with a good portion of hope we present you this European tour together with Iceland’s own Sólstafir. Even though a return to normality is joyous, why not celebrate it with some melancholy?
"This tour will bring a lush twilight shadow over Europe. Join it!" More...
Katatonia Releases "Lacquer" Live Video
To mark their new release "Dead Air," on Friday 13th November, Katatonia have released their live lockdown session performance of the "City Burials" single "Lacquer." You can check it out below.
”Dead Air is a document and a remembrance of a strange and surreal situation, as well as true evidence of the love for music – both ours and that shown by our fans.” Vocalist Jonas Renkse explains what Dead Air means to the band.
April 2020 saw Katatonia present their eleventh studio opus, the poignant "City Burials," to unanimous acclaim but with the unforeseen global event transpiring this year resulting in their album touring plans being put on hold, Katatonia conducted a more intimate “lockdown” show which was streamed live from Studio Grondahl, Stockholm on May 9th. "Dead Air" offers fans a full 88-minute set containing 20 tracks from the band’s extensive and illustrious repertoire to date, with inclusions spanning two decades of dark progressive greatness, and essentially also debuting three of the City Burials album tracks in a live setting.
The tracklisting itself contains a very literal selection of fan favourites overall, having being voted for exclusively by the band’s worldwide fanbase, flawlessly flirting between earlier singles such as metallic anthems "My Twin" & "July," to the stirring emotional grandeur of new song, "Lacquer."
The recording, mixing & engineering work was orchestrated by David Castillo, notable for his extensive body of work with Katatonia to date, and the performance itself was professionally filmed by Blackbox Video. More...

As weird as these times are, it gives us a little comfort to know that we made an attempt to defy the situation and did what we miss the most right now: playing a show." More...

This track is one of the highlights from new album "City Burials," bursting into life with a trademark screaming guitar solo before dropping into an upbeat distinctive and hugely memorable Katatonia chorus.
Vocalist Jonas Renkse states "’Behind the Blood’ is a celebration of the heavy metal music that we all grew up with, modified to fit the Katatonia universe. Whilst lyrically it is telling the tale of dark revelry, to awaken the blood with the sound and taste of thunder."
"Behind the Blood" has all the hallmarks of becoming a new classic.
Katatonia, formed in 1991 by Jonas Renkse & Anders Nyström, and transitioning from early pioneers of the rising black/death/doom movement, to powerhouses of the progressive metallic rock genre. Following on from their 2016 haunting The Fall Of Hearts album Katatonia have returned with arguably their finest album to date, the enormously vivid and powerful City Burials. More...
Katatonia To Release New Album In April
Sweden's Katatonia will release their new album, "City Burials," on April 24 via Peaceville Records. Listen to the first single, "Lacquer", below.
“In days and nights of black and silver, the dead end king will come. From pieces of broken mirrors there will be a crown bestowed upon his head. In reflections of shattered glass not only the seasons will turn, but also the change disguised by the lapse of time. His mind will have to come to bear the weight of everything that was left behind and forgotten. Archiving the inaccessible. Celebrating the abandoned and mourning the destroyed. The city burials.” - Guitarist Anders Nyström
With the winds of a new direction steering the band on their latest journey, "City Burials" stands as Katatonia’s new triumph of deep & enigmatic progressive rock - the fruits of a rejuvenating and profound chapter in the band’s legacy; a catalyst for its creators, with a collection of moments constructed out of the fragments of an ever-evolving life. Compiled into one of their most important modern works and statements to date, the finely-honed instrumentation provides a multi-textured backdrop with the voice of Jonas Renkse guiding us through these latest trials of loss and ruin. Sunburst Out Of ProgPower USA XVIII
ProgPower USA promoter Glenn Harveston announced that Greek power/progressive act Sunburst was dropped from the XVIII roster, due to a VISA issues, in which a particular USCIS agent made an unusual and specific "all-encompassing" request for evidence that was impossible to satisfy in the time left. Harveston also announced that Brazil's Daydream XI will replace Sunburst.
Harveston posted the following announcement: "It is with extreme frustration and disappointment I must announce that Sunburst (Greece) will not be performing at ProgPower USA XVIII. Despite having provided the same type and kind of evidence that has obtained approvals for not only ProgPower USA bands over the last decade, but for well over one hundred other bands submitted by Marc/Play America, one agent at the USCIS (United States Customs & Immigration Services) has deemed our evidence insufficient. Given the all-encompassing breadth of that specific agent's demands (more than ever have been seen by either Marc or myself) in an RFE (Request for Evidence) in our careers, there is literally no hope of satisfying those demands. Sunburst, Marc, & I have all agreed it would be pointless to continue to fight this hopeless battle.
"Rest assured I have every intention of having Sunburst back as soon as possible. They are an amazing band and deserve to be on the ProgPower USA stage. The band is understandably disappointed, but also understand the circumstances cannot be helped.
"I want to calm the fears of those concerned about other bands performing this year. I have already obtained visa approvals for all bands I am specifically responsible for performing on Friday and Saturday. Sunburst was the last band we were waiting on for visa approval. All bands that have been submitted for Wednesday and Thursday so far have also been approved. More...
