Got an interesting little tidbit for all the gamers out there today. Remember when Skyrim had a quest riddled with references to Katatonia songs?
Turns out somebody at Bethesda must be a Katatonia fanatic, because more references to the Swedish band's music appeared in a terminal in the recently-released Fallout 4. Check it out below.
Katatonia is currently in the studio working on the follow-up to 2012's "Dead End Kings" (reviewed here).
Official details on the title and release date aren't prepped for public consumption yet, but the masters of melancholy did just check in with this studio update:
"We have just completed the drum recording and wrapped up the first session at Studio Gröndahl. It’s been a fun, relaxed, yet very focused past week guiding Daniel Moilanen into putting down the cornerstones to all our new songs.
"This guy surely has the skills of harnessing both power and finesse that goes in perfect harmony with Katatonia. Before we tell you more, here’s a few snippets of Mojjo in action while recording one of the heavier tracks. Enjoy!" More...
Sweden's Katatonia has confirmed the recruitment of drummer Daniel 'Mojjo' Moilanen. Vocalist Jonas Renkse recalls:
"We first met Mojjo back in 2009 where his band at the time, Engel, had joined up with us and Paradise Lost on a U.K. tour and we soon realized we shared the same musical background and ideals. We stayed in touch over the years and when Daniel Liljekvist quit Katatonia in 2014 we decided to give Mojjo a call. He has now been with us for well over a year, so far only as a live member, but now is the time for him to join the Katatonia album cycle and most importantly - make his own impression on our new material. We can't wait to see what this will lead to. Love him up!"
Mojjo added: "From 1993 via 2009 to 2014, from today and onward into future battles. I am thankful, delighted and proud to take part in the next phase of Katatonia and I am looking forward to the journey being as giving as it has been for the last 22 years."
Along with Mojjo, Katatonia has entered Stockholm's Studio Gröndahl with engineer Karl Daniel Lidén to commence the recording of a 10th album. The new album is due out in 2016 on Peaceville Records and follows up the 2012 album "Dead End Kings" (reviewed here). More details on the band's new album will be released in the coming weeks. Sweden's Katatonia has launched a live video of the track "Day" from upcoming concert film, "Sanctitude," to be released in North America on March 31st, 2015 via Kscope. Check it out below.
Katatonia's Anders Nystrom comments on the release: "Day... something you wake up to, or at least have to pull through, over and over. Most of them you forget about, but a couple you maybe look back upon and wish to relive again.
"Unfortunately in reality, I'm afraid that's not possible, at least not until Apple buys NASA and releases a new version of their Time Capsule backup machine and send people into the cloud and back into history to fetch an older version of their lives, but luckily for us, there's a current control of our music that doesn't need time travel.
"We have always felt that if there's a need, we're entitled to the freedom to give our old songs a makeover in the now rather than the never. So, in the making of 'Sanctitude' there was one song in particular that meant a great deal to us. In fact, it was our first song ever to feature entirely clean vocals accompanied by clean guitars and it was written and released right in the peak of our death metal years.
"The song stood out, but isolated itself into oblivion in the climate of heavier music. Therefore we wanted this song to get a second chance, to be re-discovered. Even 20 years later when performing it live for the first time, it appears the parks are still grey and look the same..." More...
Sweden’s Katatonia is set to release new concert film "Sanctitude" on March 30th in the U.K. and March 31st in North America.
In September 2013, Kscope released "Dethroned & Uncrowned," a reworking of the band's 2012 epic "Dead End Kings" (originally released on Kscope’s sister label Peaceville). "Dethroned & Uncrowned" allowed Katatonia the opportunity to explore a more progressive sound, creating new moods and textures while still staying truthful to the core of the original songs.
Katatonia took "Dethroned & Uncrowned" on the road in Europe for the first time in May 2014 under the moniker "Unplugged & Reworked." The band presented an intimate acoustic evening, performing tracks from the album alongside atmospheric classics from Katatonia's entire career, stripped and reworked. Each venue, on the tour, was carefully chosen for its unique atmosphere. The group was joined on guitar & vocals by The Pineapple Thief frontman and songwriter Bruce Soord.
"Sanctitude" is a concert film filmed and recorded in the stunning candle-lit setting of London’s Union Chapel. The 80 minute set features 17 songs across the albums "The Great Cold Distance," "Viva Emptiness," "Brave Murder Day," "Last Fair Deal Gone Down" and of course, "Dead End Kings / Dethroned & Uncrowned." The show closes with the sublime "The One You Are Looking For Is Not Here" and a special guest appearance by Norwegian vocalist Silje Wergeland of Dutch legends The Gathering. More...

After splitting with Per "Sodomizer" Erickson, Katatonia has now parted ways with drummer Daniel Liljekvist. Daniel comments:
"Dear friends and fans,
"I’ve been thinking about this for the last couple of months and I’ve come to the sad conclusion that I have to leave the band. It’s got nothing to do with ’difference in views´or any other bullshit. I just cannot combine job, family and commit 100% to Katatonia. Times for musicians are rough and I’ve decided to concentrate on my family and get a normal job that gets the bills payed.
"I’ve had some of the best moments in my life the past 14 odd years together with my favorite people in the world. I’ve been all over the planet with this lot…my second family. Thank you! I’m gonna miss playing with you and I’m gonna miss hanging out with you on the road so much. And I’m gonna miss meeting all the great Katatonia fans all over the world. You know who you are. You are truly amazing! I’m not gonna miss all the freaks and idiots we’ve come across during all the years. You probably don’t know who you are. And I will not miss bad catering, shit beer and banana juice…
"This is Daniel, rocking the fuck off! Cheers!" More...

Katatonia has issued the following announcement about splitting with guitar player Per Eriksson:
"It has been some time coming but guitarist Per ‘Sodomizer’ Eriksson and Katatonia have now mutually agreed to part ways. Per joined the band in 2010 as a live session player and after some substantial touring quickly became a steady fixture being heavily involved in the recording of Katatonia’s 2012 critically acclaimed studio album ‘Dead End Kings.'
"A difference in views on the band’s current operative as well as last year’s decision from Per to permanently live in Barcelona have made his involvement in the band too problematic, both for him and for the remaining band members.
"They part ways as good friends and on a related note, his position within the death metal super-group Bloodbath remains unchanged and he will soon join his fellow band members in the studio to record their 4th album to be released on Peaceville records this fall.
"Katatonia’s upcoming ‘Dethroned & Uncrowned’ Tour will go ahead as scheduled and will see none other than Bruce Soord (The Pineapple Thief, Wisdom of Crowds) as a special guest taking on guitar and vocal duties."

Check out the new version of "Buildings" in the lyric video below, or you can hear the previously posted "The One You Are Looking For Is Not Here" at this location.
The following statement was also issued about the coming "Dethroned & Uncrowned" release:
"In August 2012 Katatonia released Dead End Kings, their ninth studio album. The album was the band's most successful to date and cemented the Swede's position as masters of sorrowful metal. Dead End Kings was released on the Peaceville label, the band's home for the past 14 years. In September 2013 the band return with Dethroned and Uncrowned, their first release on Kscope, Peaceville's sister label.
"Many of the ecstatic reviews the Dead End Kings received commented on the fact that the album marked another step in the band's journey towards a more progressive sound. Dethroned and Uncrowned allows them to explore these elements of the record further as they have reworked the album, creating new moods and textures while still staying truthful to the core of the songs.
"The album will be available on double LP, download and as 2 disc (CD & DVD-AV) digibook set, which also features a 5.1 surround mix of the album."

Katatonia has released a lyric video for the reworked version of "The One You Are Looking For Is Not Here," taken from the group's impending "Dethroned and Uncrowned" album.
The song originally appeared on Katatonia's 2012 release "Dead End Kings" (reviewed here), which has been reimagined on "Dethroned and Uncrowned."
The new version of the album will release September 10th in North America and will mark the band's first release on Kscope - sister label to Katatonia's longtime home Peaceville Records - to celebrate the label's fifth anniversary.
Katatonia has announced a co-headlining North American tour, the "Uncrowned & Vertikal Tour," with Cult of Luna plus special guests Intronaut and TesseracT.
The two-week run will commence September 23rd in Boston, Mass. VIP packages will be available next week, along with the public on-sales beginning Friday, August 9th.
Commented vocalist Jonas Renkse: "Dear North Americans! We are happy to announce yet another co-headline tour in support of Dead End Kings, this time with fellow Swedes Cult of Luna plus support from Intronaut (US) and TesseracT (UK)!
"Since we have been touring your continent quite a bit the last few years, we thought it was about time to re-decorate the good ol' setlist a little. Right now we are rehearsing and going through some of our hidden gems, songs that we haven't yet picked up or rarely have played live before. It will probably be as exciting for you as it is for us!
"Please note that it won't be an 'old-school' party, but an evening with atmosphere so thick you could cut it with a knife! Oh, and we will probably have time to play some of the 'hits' as well. All in all, we will squeeze out as much Katatonia as possible each and every night, so let's do this one together once again, shall we?"
The upcoming North American tour will coincide with the release of "Dethroned and Uncrowned," the band's debut album on Kscope (sister label of Peaceville), home to Anathema, Amplifier, Steven Wilson and most recently, Wisdom of Crowds, the new project from Bruce Soord of The Pineapple Thief and Katatonia's very own Jonas Renkse.

Katatonia recently launched a crowd funding campaign to release a re-imagined version of latest album "Dead End Kings" (check out our review of the original version right here). The new album is to be titled "Dethroned & Uncrowned."
The campaign has already reached its goal, but fans can still contribute funds and get perks at this location. Katatonia comments on the campaign and coming release:
"First off, we wanna say that we’re completely happy with the outcome and success of ‘Dead End Kings’, but truth to be told, we saw a potential in going in a different and unexplored direction with the same material. Our instincts told us that this would be both intriguing and captivating to revoke the loud and aggressive sound picture dominant on the album and instead give way to the atmosphere and tranquillity lurking beneath. This eventually became an urge, so a few months later down the road we decided it was time to re-visit this project, but indulge in new creative experimentation.
"So, it’s our wish to release the entire album in a stripped down, semi-acoustic way and turn things around completely and we are asking you, the fans, to help us do this by Pledging the various album formats and other exclusive items we have made available. By doing so you can check back regularly to find out about our campaign and the album’s progress.
"The synopsis is simple and album title won’t lie; the drums will be dethroned and the distorted rhythm guitars will be uncrowned! Instead, we’ll place the emphasis on the many layers of ambience, with the melodies staying central and the vocal harmonies representing the heart of the album. Also by pledging you are helping the bands ability to be able to tour further afield. Although the songs are the same and the track listing doesn’t change, we hope the end result is something entirely different!
"Think of the album like a person’s face in the hands of a surgeon, whose appearance is gonna change, but it’s still the same person behind that face and we guess an important factor, in this case, would be that the surgeon itself is obviously Katatonia, not a stranger! If there’s one album in our repertoire that’s suited for a thing like this, it’s ‘Dead End Kings’. More...
