Katatonia Posts New Lyric Video

Katatonia has revealed the first full track, entitled "Old Heart Falls," from upcoming new album "The Fall of Hearts."

The album is due for release on May 2th0 through Peaceville Records and a lyric clip for "Old Heart Falls" - directed by Lasse Hoile - is available below.

On the release of the first new song, vocalist Jonas Renkse commented: "A song with lush textures, distinct dynamics and a memorable chorus are the trademarks to some of the most beloved Katatonia songs. 'Old Heart Falls' substantiates all of those attributes, but is not by any means defining the album as a whole. There is more to come..."

About the lyric video, guitarist Anders Nyström added: "Knowing we didn't want another 'font circus' with all these words and letters competing in Olympic acrobatics, we decided to make it extremely simple but also very real... 30 years ago when we were active in the underground tape-trading scene, there were no computers around, so we had to write all our letters by hand, or when feeling extra motivated, we used a typewriter. I clearly remember writing letters on a typewriter with a ribbon directly to paper created a special feeling that no computer would ever emulate. So determined to bring back this feeling for a brief couple of minutes, we passed on our idea to our talented friend Lasse Hoile who made sure this beautiful Royal typewriter served a final purpose before crawling all the way back to the start, returning to dust..." Katatonia Comments On New Guitarist

Katatonia this week announced details on 10th studio album "The Fall of Hearts" and today reveals more information about new guitarist Roger Öjersson.

Formerly the lead vocalist and bassist in Swedish power trio Kamchatka and currently also the guitarist in Swedish metal band Tiamat, Öjersson joined Katatonia just in time to briefly appear on parts of the new album.

Roger comments: "I feel honored and priviledged to get to be a part of the Katatonia family. I hold these fellow musicians' artsmanship in very high regard and I am looking forward to setting out on this journey with eager anticipation."

Öjersson replaces Per "Sodo” Eriksson who left the band in 2014. Since that time a couple of temporary guitarists have stepped into the fold such as Bruce Soord (The Pineapple Thief) and Tomas Åkvik (Nale, Lik), but Roger is effectively a full time member of Katatonia with his first show taking place at Karmøygeddon Metal Festival in Norway next month.

Anders Nyström states: "We’re delighted to welcome our neighbour Roger, a true multi-musician extraordinaire, into our spiralling ways of darkness. Currently with this 5-piece, there’s nothing hold back or limiting Katatonia’s potential neither in the studio nor on stage. Our ever growing ambition may now begin to manifest our vision." More...

Katatonia Issues First Details Of New Album

Katatonia, the Swedish purveyors of dark progressive rock/metal, has revealed details of the eagerly awaited 10th studio album which will be entitled "The Fall of Hearts." The album is set for release on May 20th through long-time label Peaceville Records.

The official follow-up to 2012’s acclaimed "Dead End Kings" was recorded at Stockholm’s Studio Gröndahl & Tri-lamb Studio, and was self-produced by Anders Nyström & Jonas Renkse. Mixing and mastering duties were carried out by Jens Bogren (Opeth, Ihsahn, Devin Townsend) at Fascination Street Studios, with Karl Daniel Lidén (Switchblade, The Ocean, Greenleaf) brought in as engineer.

The dramatic, yet desolate, artwork was created by long time Katatonia designer and illustrator Travis Smith.

Katatonia spent the past four years since the release of "Dead End Kings" touring the world, as well as expanding the fanbase through two special albums on Kscope, the sister label of Peaceville. 2013 saw the release of "Dethroned & Uncrowned," which exploded the core of the songs on "Dead End Kings" creating new moods and textures. In 2015, the band released the live acoustic album and concert film, "Sanctitude." Both releases illustrate the band’s journey toward this, the current more progressive sound.

"The Fall of Hearts" is the first record to feature new drummer Daniel ’Mojjo’ Moilanen and with the addition of their recently recruited guitarist Roger Öjersson (Tiamat), who came in just in time to sprinkle some blistering solos on the album, Katatonia will continue to push the musical boundaries beyond the roots in the metal scene while drawing in new fans from across the musical spectrum like peers such as Opeth and Anathema have also done, cementing Katatonia’s place as one of the most revered and cherished of all bands in the world of modern heavy music. Katatonia Checks In From The Studio

Katatonia is currently in the studio working on the follow-up to 2012's "Dead End Kings" (reviewed here).

Official details on the title and release date aren't prepped for public consumption yet, but the masters of melancholy did just check in with this studio update:

"We have just completed the drum recording and wrapped up the first session at Studio Gröndahl. It’s been a fun, relaxed, yet very focused past week guiding Daniel Moilanen into putting down the cornerstones to all our new songs.

"This guy surely has the skills of harnessing both power and finesse that goes in perfect harmony with Katatonia. Before we tell you more, here’s a few snippets of Mojjo in action while recording one of the heavier tracks. Enjoy!" More...

Katatonia Enters The Studio

Sweden's Katatonia has confirmed the recruitment of drummer Daniel 'Mojjo' Moilanen. Vocalist Jonas Renkse recalls:

"We first met Mojjo back in 2009 where his band at the time, Engel, had joined up with us and Paradise Lost on a U.K. tour and we soon realized we shared the same musical background and ideals. We stayed in touch over the years and when Daniel Liljekvist quit Katatonia in 2014 we decided to give Mojjo a call. He has now been with us for well over a year, so far only as a live member, but now is the time for him to join the Katatonia album cycle and most importantly - make his own impression on our new material. We can't wait to see what this will lead to. Love him up!"

Mojjo added: "From 1993 via 2009 to 2014, from today and onward into future battles. I am thankful, delighted and proud to take part in the next phase of Katatonia and I am looking forward to the journey being as giving as it has been for the last 22 years."

Along with Mojjo, Katatonia has entered Stockholm's Studio Gröndahl with engineer Karl Daniel Lidén to commence the recording of a 10th album. The new album is due out in 2016 on Peaceville Records and follows up the 2012 album "Dead End Kings" (reviewed here). More details on the band's new album will be released in the coming weeks. Katatonia Posts "Day" Live Video

Sweden's Katatonia has launched a live video of the track "Day" from upcoming concert film, "Sanctitude," to be released in North America on March 31st, 2015 via Kscope. Check it out below.

Katatonia's Anders Nystrom comments on the release: "Day... something you wake up to, or at least have to pull through, over and over. Most of them you forget about, but a couple you maybe look back upon and wish to relive again.

"Unfortunately in reality, I'm afraid that's not possible, at least not until Apple buys NASA and releases a new version of their Time Capsule backup machine and send people into the cloud and back into history to fetch an older version of their lives, but luckily for us, there's a current control of our music that doesn't need time travel.

"We have always felt that if there's a need, we're entitled to the freedom to give our old songs a makeover in the now rather than the never. So, in the making of 'Sanctitude' there was one song in particular that meant a great deal to us. In fact, it was our first song ever to feature entirely clean vocals accompanied by clean guitars and it was written and released right in the peak of our death metal years.

"The song stood out, but isolated itself into oblivion in the climate of heavier music. Therefore we wanted this song to get a second chance, to be re-discovered. Even 20 years later when performing it live for the first time, it appears the parks are still grey and look the same..." More...

Katatonia Releasing New Concert DVD

Sweden’s Katatonia is set to release new concert film "Sanctitude" on March 30th in the U.K. and March 31st in North America.

In September 2013, Kscope released "Dethroned & Uncrowned," a reworking of the band's 2012 epic "Dead End Kings" (originally released on Kscope’s sister label Peaceville). "Dethroned & Uncrowned" allowed Katatonia the opportunity to explore a more progressive sound, creating new moods and textures while still staying truthful to the core of the original songs.

Katatonia took "Dethroned & Uncrowned" on the road in Europe for the first time in May 2014 under the moniker "Unplugged & Reworked." The band presented an intimate acoustic evening, performing tracks from the album alongside atmospheric classics from Katatonia's entire career, stripped and reworked. Each venue, on the tour, was carefully chosen for its unique atmosphere. The group was joined on guitar & vocals by The Pineapple Thief frontman and songwriter Bruce Soord.

"Sanctitude" is a concert film filmed and recorded in the stunning candle-lit setting of London’s Union Chapel. The 80 minute set features 17 songs across the albums "The Great Cold Distance," "Viva Emptiness," "Brave Murder Day," "Last Fair Deal Gone Down" and of course, "Dead End Kings / Dethroned & Uncrowned." The show closes with the sublime "The One You Are Looking For Is Not Here" and a special guest appearance by Norwegian vocalist Silje Wergeland of Dutch legends The Gathering. More...
