This year's Summer Breeze festival will be taking place from August 16th - 18th, with full details available at the festival's website here. The organizers of Summer Breeze have now issued the following announcement about confirming new bands:
"Since the release of their amazing breakthrough album 'Inwards', Dew-Scented have been at the forefront of European thrash metal. Since then, the cool bunch led by frontman Leif Jensen have been producing fantastic albums full of unstoppable riff power and overwhelming intensity at nicely regular intervals, cementing the band's excellent reputation time and again. In 2012, Dew-Scented aim at kick-starting their career with an entirely new line-up – with the exception of band boss Leif – and the fantastic new album 'Icarus', and are gearing up to shatter the Summer Breeze Open Air into small pieces. We are stoked to welcome the indestructible machine called Dew-Scented at our festival once more. Get thrashed!
"When Agrypnie played the Summer Breeze festival in 2008 for the first and only time so far, they were booked as consolation for all those who were mourning the recent disbanding of Nocte Obducta. Four years, one studio album and one EP later, the Hessians have made a career for themselves, having now reached the same level as the aforementioned group. Their new studio album is still being recorded as we speak, but their last EP 'Asche' was already an announcement for big things to come in the realm of post black metal. Expressive, multi-faceted, melancholic, dynamic – all these attributes fit Agrypnie like a glove and are underlined by the fact that their songs don't ever become predictable or interchangable. One of the most exciting bands our scene has to offer nowadays."

Katatonia has posted a new lyric video online for the song "Dead Letters," which comes off the upcoming new album "Dead End Kings." Check out the clip below. Katatonia commented:
"We're proud to present to you the first glimpse into the world we've been living in for the last half a year. Instead of giving you just a snippet of audio, we decided to give you a 'lyric video' for a FULL song also showcasing some of the exquisite artwork to be found inside the album.
"We hope you will enjoy one of many diverse and differerent sides found on Dead End Kings by starting off with 'Dead Letters', one the most heavy and proggressive songs to be found on the album and certainly a new live classic. Crank it a couple (or hundred) of times and then let us know what you think!"
"Dead End Kings" is due for release via Peaceville Records on August 27th (EU) and August 28th (US). Pre-orders are available here. To find more info on the album, you can also read our recent interview with the band from the recording studio at this location. More...

The organizers of the upcoming Summer Breeze 2012 festival have issued the following update about confirming new acts:
"Italy is not exactly a hotbed for dark doom metal. Fortunately enough, there are always exceptions to confirm the rule. With the three albums they have released so far, The Foreshadowing have provided a master class in gloom and doom. Hailing from Rome, the band prove that it is indeed possible to write great atmospheric songs without falling into excessive pathos and kitsch. Especially singer Marco Benevento's clear, ear-piercing vocals take the group's material to a level which is only populated by bands such as Katatonia, My Dying Bride, early Anathema and even Opeth. Don't miss this black pearl of darkness! You will hardly experience anything bigger, darker and more epic at Summer Breeze 2012!
"Breakdowns aren't exactly the most innovative element in metal nowadays... However, if you use them with such conviction and vehemence as Bleed From Within, even the most athletically challenged of metalheads should soon mutate into pit fighter number one. The UK band have two albums out which should appeal to fans of As I Lay Dying, Bring Me The Horizon and Parkway Drive, while at times Bleed From Within are even more melodic than the aforementioned bands, only to dive into a brutal breakdown the very next second. All fans of metalcore and deathcore should highlight this band in their personal running order, as this is the perfect stuff for all of them!"
This September, California avant-garde metal band Stolen Babies will be touring the United States with co-headliners Devin Townsend Project and Katatonia, and special guests Paradise Lost as part of the “Epic Kings & Idols Tour” (DTP and Katatonia will alternate in headlining each show). The tour kicks-off in Seattle, WA at Studio 7 on September 4th, 2012 and travels throughout the United States until September 24th when it comes to a close in Baltimore, MD at Rams Head Live.
“We're very excited about being on this tour with such a great line-up,” states Stolen Babies drummer Gil Sharone. “It's the perfect way to start the touring cycle for our new album that will be released later this year with No Comment Records.”
Stolen Babies will also perform select shows this summer before the “Epic Kings & Idols Tour” begins, including a special show with Dredg at The Roxy in West Hollywood, CA, the “Gothic Theatre Block Party” in Englewood, CO at Moe’s, and a special headline show at The Metro in Salt Lake City, UT. Canadian extreme metal outfit, The Devin Townsend Project, has announced that the band will be embarking on a co-headlining run of North America this Autumn, along with Swedish metal veterans Katatonia, with whom they will rotate headlining slots. British gothic metal legends Paradise Lost are also on the bill as direct support, with Stolen Babies confirmed as the trek's openers.
Speaking on the tour, Townsend stated: "So after a break in which we've managed to finish the live DVDs from the London shows (‘By A Thread’) as well as our surprisingly epic new record, 'Epicloud'...We're about to start getting into touring mode again, and it pleases me to announce that we'll be with some wonderful bands this Fall. I think this package pretty much covers the gamut of emotional heavy music, and really...It'll be nice to share the stage with some passionate folks who live for their music as much as we do. Again, we can't thank you enough for supporting what we do and allowing us to play for you. It will be nice to catch up, and we hope to see you there!"
Katatonia's Anders Nystrom adds: "A better bill than this will be hard to find!"

Katatonia, the Swedish purveyor of dark rock/metal, announced early this morning that the band's ninth studio album, due to be released on Peaceville Records on August 27th (EU) and August 28th (US), will be titled "Dead End Kings." The band has now revealed the full cover artwork and track listing, which can be viewed below. "Dead End Kings" follows the band's previous full-length "Night is the New Day" (reviewed here).
"Dead End Kings" was recorded at Ghost Ward Studios & The City Of Glass. The album was produced by founding duo Anders Nyström and Jonas Renkse themselves, and mixed by David Castillo, known for his prior work with the band, as well as Opeth & Bloodbath.
"Dead End Kings" sees the recording debut of guitarist Per Eriksson for Katatonia, as well as recent bassist Niklas Sandin. Additionally, Katatonia is joined once again by Frank Default and his invaluable expertise on sampling and atmospherics, plus a special guest appearance by Norwegian vocalist Silje Wergeland of Dutch legends The Gathering/ex-Octavia Sperati. For more insight into the recording process, check out our interview with the band towards the end of the tracking process.
Jonas (vocals) comments on the album title: “Dead End Kings is about the corridors of our mind from where there is no return. Be a king or queen in your own right in these hallways, even at the dead end. Carry your burden with pride. That's what we are doing, twenty years and counting. Kings, because we believe in what we are creating, in our own disturbing faith."
Anders (Guitars) also added: “This album has doors revolving into many different genres of music but remain disguised within the Katatonia trademark. We have walked the fine line between attempting not to repeat ourselves but also not to distance us away from what people know and love. We're now ready to hand over the evidence and whatever the direction this has taken is now for you to decide. We're confident the creativity and passion on this album is something that will be echoing even beyond the dead end.” More...

Katatonia, which is currently working on a new album to be released in September, has issued the following announcement about Anders "Blakkheim" Nyström missing the band's upcoming show in Russia:
"We are currently on our way to Russia, but we have some bad news. Unfortunately Anders is very sick and unable to travel with us, so we send our regards and wish him a speedy recovery.
"The show must go on and we didn't want our fans to miss out so we have decided to carry on and play the concerts without him. We look forward to seeing you all over the next couple of days!"
For more info on the upcoming album, check out our recent interview with Katatonia while the band was still in the recording process. In related news, Diabolical Masquerade, the former side project from Anders Nyström, was recently covered in our Unearthing the Metal Underground column.
Every Monday we take a break from the news to highlight three lesser known bands that deserve a moment in the spotlight and can help expand your metal horizons.
Last year we showcased three side projects from black metal icon Ihsahn, but there are plenty of musicians from throughout metaldom who have a host of additional projects outside their most well-known bands. This week we’ll take a look at bands covering a range of sounds from the members of Borknagar, Katatonia, and Samael that all show a different side than what fans may be expecting from their favorite musicians.
While many may be aware that Vintersorg from Borknagar has had his own self-titled, folk leaning and clean singing focused project for years, it’s not as well known that he was also involved in a folk metal project called Otyg prior to his solo releases.
Otyg had a very ‘90s, proto-metal feel as the musicians were starting to explore the boundaries of the genre, and is a must hear if you want to explore the roots of folk metal or are into the early works of bands like Amorphis or Borknagar. The band released two full-length albums titled “Älvefärd” and “Sagovindars Boning” before going on hold indefinitely. The music is a little on the lo-fi side and not quite as bombastic or epic as the intricately arranged folk and orchestra stuff that has come out of metal in the interim, but just listen to that atmosphere!
Katatonia is currently working on a new album and follow-up to "Night is the New Day" (reviewed here). The band has now checked in with the following announcement about a guest vocalist appearing on the album:
"Remember we revealed there would be a guest on the new album making a duet with Jonas on one of the songs? We're proud to give you her name now, our friend Silje Wergeland, currently the singer in The Gathering. A beautiful fit in every way!
"We suggest to like her page and check out her activity if you haven't already."
To find out more about the upcoming release, check out our recent interview with Katatonia's Jonas Renkse.

The organisers of the British leg of the Sonisphere festival have announced that they have had to cancel this years event, which was set to feature headline performances from KISS, Faith No More and Queen + Adam Lambert, amongst others. The statement from the organisers reads as follows:
"It is with very heavy hearts and much regret that we announce the cancellation of Sonisphere Knebworth 2012.
"Putting the festival together in what is proving to be a very challenging year was more difficult than we anticipated and we have spent the last few months fighting hard to keep Sonisphere in the calendar. Unfortunately circumstances have dictated that we would be unable to run the festival to a standard that both the artists and that Sonisphere’s audience would rightly expect. More...

Long running Swedish act Katatonia is currently in the process of recording a new album and follow-up to "Night is the New Day" (reviewed here). The band has now checked in from the studio with a video update, which can be found via Katatonia's Facebook profile.
The Swedes previously commented on the upcoming album:
"So, how does the material sound like? Well, you got the lush textures, the moody melodies, the heavy parts, the progressive touches, the mellow bits and so on... Is it metal? Is it rock? Is it alternative? Is it singer/songwriter? Actually at times it feels like we're exploring territories where Katatonia would be an orphan in the land of 'genres.' We can't tell where and to whom we belong and the goal is that it doesn't even matter, because before and above any genre there's first an acceptance level of music being good, or being bad. Katatonia might be bad people, but we create good music. Amen."
Swedish act Katatonia has posted the following update online about working on an upcoming new release and follow-up to the "Night is the New Day" (reviewed here) album:
"It's been a busy time lately and the hard work has finally paid off. We have now thirteen songs in the bag and hey, that means the recording of our new album can and shall begin. We're starting with the drums on Monday and we'll be once again work together with David Castillo (who engineered and mixed 'Night Is The New Day'), so even though we always strive to improve our productions, it should sound sweet that it's the same team putting this one together, just throw in some new gear, gadgets and toys with that! The recordings as well as the mix will be divided between Ghostward and our own HQ over the next month and we'll keep you posted on the progress.

"We also hooked up again with keyboard maestro extraordinaire Frank Default and regardless of the internet speculations, he's not to 'blame' for the increased use of electronics since the last album. That part has been called for as we simply feel that it has grown to fill a hole in our sound inside, or alongside, the classic formation of instruments. In our world, we allow mellotrones, hammonds, rhodes and strings to integrate with loops, distortion and filters to manifest in the katatonic maelstrom. It's our time to marry contemporary with vintage. Here's our 9th album to be delivered!"
